Tab 4 8" Goes Black and Hangs at "Gathering info" - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
First time I've installed a custom ROM, hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8-inch (SM-T330NU). I decided to try rooting it and installing a custom ROM to get rid of the Samsung bloatware. Here's where I'm at:
1. Used Odin 3.13.1 and CN-Auto-Root for my device and got root access.
2. Disabled KNOX via SuperSU. Tablet started freaking out, various apps would stop working, including launcher and media storage, so I did a factory reset. Problems went away. Tablet was back to stock ROM.
3. Used Odin to flash TWRP 3.0.0-3 to the tablet. Worked fine.
4. Booted, attached to PC. Copied ROM (cm-14.0-20160929-0008-UNOFFICIAL-milletwifi) and G-apps (open_gapps-arm-7.0-stock-20180706) to the device via USB
5. Went into TWRP, cleared out Dalvik, Data, Cache, System. Still working well!
6. In TWRP, installed the ROM. Rebooted. Added Wifi, went through the basic config. Boots fine, but no Google apps.
7. Realized I didn't install the GApps, rebooted to TWRP, added the GApps package. Installed OK, rebooted.
8. Apps are all there (Play Store, Chrome, etc.) but.....
Problem: When I try to connect to Google via Chrome, Gmail, or any other Google App, a screen pops up that says "Gathering Info...." , the progress bar runs for about 5 seconds, and the screen goes black.
Attempted fixes (all no help):
- Factory Reset via TWRP
- Complete wipe and reload starting at step 5 above, this time not running through config before installing GApps.
- Re-root via Odin and CN-AutoRoot (Odin reported failed)
- Just let it sit for an hour because it might actually be doing something and it's not actually a problem. (Hey it was worth a shot!)
- Wipe and reload using Nano Gapps instead of Stock.
Still the same behavior. I'm stuck. Did I miss a step? Is there a better ROM to use? Or do I just need to wait until Prime Day on Monday and shell out for a new tablet because I've borked this one up beyond repair?
Thanks in advance! Any assistance is appreciated!

I dug deeper into fallingup's recovery thread. It never occurred to me that it might make a difference to clear cache and factory reset AFTER doing an update. I did that, which seemed to clear up my FC loop. I fell into a page that asked me what language I was speaking, and was prompted to set up my google account -- which failed. Couldn't connect to data services, not even WIFI. So *228 and Activated my phone (again). Google still wouldn't log in. Went to Settings/Privacy/Factory reset. Selected English, google logged in this time. My phone appears to be completely back to its original stock state. Root is gone. Even bing is back, lovely. Thanks angel12!
... now if I could just figure out why that update.zip paired with the modem.tar that started all this wouldn't sing for me in recovery mode.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
First off, I apologize for cluttering this forum, but I'm at a bit of a loss here. I also failed to find the server for IRC. I'd really appreciate a small push.
Here goes: I got into download mode from the command line. I flashed over my modem with Odin, got a PASS, rebooted fully (shouldn't have done this) with no errors. Next, I popped into recovery mode. From there, I decided to factory reset _and_ wipe my cache -- it seemed like a good idea at the time. It seems like a bad idea now. Finally, I told recovery to apply update.zip from my sdcard. It flat out refused! Complained that the .zip wasn't signed. So, I rebooted.
I then experienced my first FC loop! The culprit is TouchWiz launcher, which just repeatedly closes unexpectedly.
So then I restored the DI01 modem, which didn't change a thing. Next, I ran Stock-i500-VZW-System.tar.md5 through Odin. It updated with no problems.
However, I still have my Force Close Loop, which I expected going to stock would fix.
What I think is really going on is I'd been using ADW Launcher, coupled with an app that switched it to being the 'default'. Something somewhere, must be giving TWiz a hard time.
The good news is I still have adb shell access and root.
* Is there anything I can do to make that homescreen switcher app run on my phone without using a launcher (from shell, for instance)?
* Is there some important point I'm missing about my recovery (I've flashed back everything I changed, at least in my mind)
* Perhaps I could flash something else from Recovery, and that would clear this up?
* It would be great to know what I did that messed this up.
EDIT:
I meant DI01, not "Di05". Nice catch!
It turned out in my case that data wipes were crucial - the factory wipe in system, and the data/factory reset &or cache partition in recovery mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782204
Follow this to the letter. Been there, done that. Home Switcher isn't what went wrong. You'll be fine in 10 minutes.
Wait. DI05??? Do you mean DI01 or DJ05? You need to make sure you flash the modem that matches your ROM. Either easy is fine, and probably didn't have anything to do with your force close loop, but make sure they match or you won't be able to text.
And PDA in Odin.

[Q] Can not connect with gapps CM11 and problem with modem

When I try to login with my google account e.g. in play store it tells me, it has problems connecting with the google servers and that I should try again later. This is happening since 3 days.
I have installed CM11 after CM10 did suddenly not boot anymore. I tried several version, now I have version 20140223. I also tried several versions of gapps, with some it did not even show me the log in screen, they just closed. With 2-11_GApps_Core/Standard_4.4.2_signed it shows me the login scren and after entering my details the above error. The Connection to the internet is working and using a browser on the phone I can also login to google. I often made several wipes inclusing system and reinstalling CM
Right now I don't even get my contacts back on the phone, because of that.
Additionally it tells me after some time that an problem with the modem occured and that it needs to reboot.
What can I do? I search for several hours in the internet and did not find anything which fixes the problem.
Edit:
On CM10 I could already not connect to the play store anymore, but at least my address book was synchronized with google.
Use only core gapps. After flashing CM11, don't flash gapps, reboot, go to system and then reboot to flash gapps.

Thank you, it worked!
What I did:
Reboot, wipe the 3 standard things, wipe system, install CM11, NO wipe, reboot to system, reboot to recovery, install gapps without any wipe, reboot.

[Q] Blank Black Home Screen + How Do You Uninstall Gapps?

So ive been using OmniROM 4.4 on my Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-19300 for over 6-7 months now (since around 22/11/2013). It has all been working as a treat. Two nights ago something seemed to of happened on my phone and few apps disappeared (they had the green android robot logo). I was also notified that some apps have updated. I am unsure what these apps were (my guess would be the googles apps; google books, google movies etc. because they were all next to each other in alphabetical order). So because of this i decided to turn my phone off. When i turned it back on, it would be stuck on the OmniROM Logo whilst booting up. It would be stuck on this for a few hours. So I left it over night. Then the next morning it had booted up and a error message popped up saying "Stystem UID's Inconsistent" with a button saying "I'm Feeling Lucky". So I clicked the button and unlocked the phone. Then the homescreen was black and blank. There was no background image, apps, widgets etc. However, I can access the notification bar. If i had any notifications, for an example a message on kik. I can click on it and it will take me to kik and it can use it as normal. When i click the home button it takes me back to a black blank screen.
So, My first reaction was to create a nandroid backup (of the black blank screen OmniROM) then wipe everything (data/factory, cache partition and dalvik cache) in CWM Recovery v6.0.4.4. After this I restored my old nandroid backup, this is my backup i created before i moved onto OmniROM so it was the Samsung galaxy s3 stock 4.1.2. So once i did this i was again greeted with the error message saying "Stystem UID's Inconsistent" with a button saying "I'm Feeling Lucky". So i clicked the button and set up my device. During this and after this Ive had about a billion pop up error messages saying "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped." and "Google books has stopped working" and it did this for all the other google apps. So its pretty clear that it must be something to do with Gapps (Correct me if i'm wrong please). Also, It did not allow me to get anything from the play store apart from twitter and rom manager. snapchat and the google app updates didn't work (that is all i have tried). I had error messages saying that i couldnt download it. I have tried installing gapps and OmniROM again and it works but i still get the error messages saying that gapps and google apps have stopped. I have also restored by nandroid backup of the omnirom (that I did before i wiped everything) and i still get the blank black homescreen.
So, I want to know whether it is gapps that has caused this? If so what do i need to do? Do i need to unistall it and install it again? How do i do that?
All I want is to go back to OmniROM and it works and this problem wont happen again. Also if i can get all my data (apps, pictures etc.) that i saved in my nandroid back that i did when i was on OmniROM (before i wiped everything) then that would be great!
I appreciate it very much if you have read this and helped me out.
Despite you have given lots of details, you didn't specify which GAPPS package you're using. Who's the maintainer of the package? Are you sure it's for 4.4.x?
Nonetheless, get the latest PA GAPPS package. As @TKruzze says on the official thread: "We consider these apps as important as our ROM. It is sad that the ROM scene deals with so many broken/outdated or buggy packages."
Lots of issues could be caused by a messy GAPPS package or a messy recovery.
Now I suggest doing the following:
1) Take a backup of user files (pics, music, etc...) and don't take backup of app data as that could be messy or corrupted or at least take the backup of app data but don't restore it.
2) Download the latest OmniROM nightly, SuperSU and PA GAPPS (stock package seems the one for you) and check the files' MD5 after you download to be 100% sure the files aren't corrupted.
3) Download the latest official TWRP. For the love of Android, it's been stated by OmniROM developers that it's the officially supported recovery.
4) Flash TWRP and do a full wipe (system, data, cache and both SD and internal memory).
5) Do a reboot to recovery after wiping then flash the ZIP's in this order: OmniROM > PA GAPPS > SuperSU (don't flash any custom stuff or addons for now).
6) Reboot into system and restore data gradually. Install most important apps and keep on monitoring your phone for abnormalities and make sure you clean up your SD and internal memory backups from any redundant files before you get them back on the phone (there should be a "clockworkmod" folder that's not needed).
7) All should be fine now.
Notes:
1) Uninstalling GAPPS can be done by wiping the system, cache and dalvik-cache then flashing the ROM again but I didn't suggest that as the data partition is probably already messy.
2) NANDROID backups are ZIP files, you can extract them and get some data manually. You've made a NANDROID on a bad state so you can alternatively restore that before doing any of the above and selectively backup data using Titanium Backup and the files using casual methods.
Hope that helps and sorry for it being long. But such issues are hard to tackle on and you'll be better off doing a clean install.
Happy flashing!

[Q] May have bricked my Tab

So my wife and I got a 7" Tab 3 from some hour long seminar thing. She setup her account and then I did mine. On mine I get a popup about every 20 seconds about my Knox account not being activate. I've never heard of Knox so I did some googling. In the security administrators menu it won't let me uncheck the Knox box. There is no Knox app. When I go into all apps there are 2 apps with Knox in the name and I can't open, kill, stop, or anything else to either. So from what I could tell I was stuck with the popup. I decided to try and root it and see if I could delete it that way. I have probably rooted about 15 phones, tabs, iCraps, etc. in the past with no problems. During the Odin root it failed. Now it's stuck at a screen saying "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again". I'm downloading Kies now. Any suggestions? Thanks
How did you root it? This is tab 4 forum not 3.... Can you still get into Odin mode?

search odin reboot, odin reboot tar, odin reboot dummy, odin force reboot
it's one of those, when you find the thread you'll know it.
flash that dummy file to force odin to reboot and hopefully clear/dump cache,
make sure you have the appropriate custom recovery odin image for your tab,
if odin reboot works, force reboot your tab again to odin, start a fresh session of
odin on your pc [not reset, a new session] flash your custom recovery,
i strongly advise AGAINST twrp for this operation, after you get your tab
re-established then switch to twrp if that's your preference.
if recovery flash goes well, force reboot to recovery and connect via adb.
download chainfire's latest supersu update zip and a custom rom for your
tab, if needed. Push file to tab via adb push, then flash supersu if your
stock rom is still intact, otherwise flash custom rom.
stock rom intact - open app drawer and launch supersu, it should ask you
if you want to disable the knox nag. if successful, reboot to recovery
and make a backup, then perform a factory reset, reboot and re-launch
supersu and go from there.
by the way... WRONG FORUM !!!
just kidding ... :silly:
seriously though...

First, thanks for the reply. I got it fixed this morning.
Sorry, it's a Tab 4. I guess I was in a hurry and tried flashing the firmware for the 10". I let it sit overnight so the battery would die. I downloaded the correct stock firmware which took hours. In the morning I let it charge for a few hours then plugged it into the computer. I got the same screen but Odin recognized it. I flashed the stock firmware without any problems. Its working fine now with no traces of Knox.
I guess the next step will be rooting it...
Tab 4 ...no google play store, etc. after unrooting??
Anyways I had the great idea of rooting my newly purchased TAB 4. I too used Odin 3. I loved the fact that I was successful at gaining root without data or app loss,. though slowly I began to see pop-ups pertaining to apps on my sd card. After awhile, I was seeing more pop ups on my screen for apps that began to stop working. Most importantly Google Play store. I panicked and decided to unroot without backing up. After that, I tried to factory restart. Being that I was no longer rooted, I figured it was safe to restart from scratch. What was I thinking? It all started over again, only this time with the out of the box look. Honestly I have only done the whole root process a couple of times and from what I understood it seemed to be fairly easy according to the process explained to me. All was well until I couldn't gain access to my apps. or for that matter download new ones. Is my Tablet dead or is there a possible answer? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do?
Thanks

I think you're leaving a step out here... Did you use some app like apps 2 SD? Why did you root? What root software did you use?

hi,
after unroot , factory reset, cache and dalvik wipe don't account for the
garbage left in /data/data and settings left in place.
apps 2 sd is janky on stock roms, that's been my experience anyway.
you should only be using an odin root method for devices that do not
have a custom recovery available. Use chainfire's supersu update zip.

Help with Root and Recovery please!

Hello.
My Galaxy S4 was dying so T-Mobile just replaced it with an S5. It came with:
LMY47X.G900TUVS1FOJ4
I clicked on Software updates in About device and it did whatever updates, but the version stayed the same. Then I went to autoroot [dot] chainfire [dot] eu and downloaded the correct file to root. I unzipped the file and ran Odin 3.10.6 that came with it. I was able to root the device no problem.
What seemed like a problem afterward was that I couldn't find SuperSU in the Application list. I know the phone was rooted though because I could launch Titanium Backup to restore all my stuff from the S4. I went to the Play Store to download SuperSU. It kept complaining that I needed a new binary, but it would fail every time to update. I even tried downloading the latest SuperSU zip to install in the recovery mode, but that failed too. I really wasn't too worried about this.
While looking up how to root the S5, I saw some posts where people mentioned their root access stopped after 24 hours. I just experienced this when I launched Titanium Backup to begin uninstalling bloatware. I was informed that I didn't have root access anymore.
I figured I'd try to reflash the auto-root through Odin. According to Odin, everything passed, but looking at the device, it said it's already patched and the restore failed, so it aborted.
Now the device is stuck in an infinite reboot loop. I can access both the download and recovery modes, but that's it.
I'd really really like to not have to do a factory wipe as it was a pain to get everything copied over from the S4.
Can I flash it with something else?
Once I can get back in the device, how do I keep the device rooted? Do I have to flash TWRP or CWM?
The only root program I use is Titanium Backup and would really really like to keep using it to makr regular backups.
Thanks a lot.
Try booting into recovery and wiping the CACHES
If it still won't boot, grab a stock ROM from sammobile .com for your model S5 (G900T by the looks of the ROM name) and flash it with ODIN from download mode
That won't wipe your data or anything you've restored, as long as you don't reset
If it still won't boot, you might have to suck it up and factory reset after flashing stock
Was the TiBu backup you restored, rooted? Maybe restoring the backup restored an old version of SuperSU and broke the CF AR version
Might need to go down the TWRP and SuperSU from TWRP recovery route to get it rooted properly if CF AR isn't woprking 100%, which it doesn't for a fair few people
I tried clearing the cache, but that didn't work.
Is there a way to download the stock ROM without having to create an account on the download site?
The Titanium Backup I restored was rooted. Everything was totally fine, until I went back to TB and it suddenly told me I wasn't rooted anymore.
I did try TWRP after I made the original post. I think messed up the device, but I can get in now. I flashed the latest version and booted into Recovery Mode. I clicked on Fix Permissions and possibly one other thing. It let booted farther before the infinite bootloop. It'd show my lock screen and give me 1-2 seconds before rebooting. If I swiped quickly, I could see the home screen with most of my icons gone. Clicked on Apps shows most of the apps are gone. When I removed the SIM card, I stopped getting the infinite bootloop. Here are the list of important programs I have left:
Contacts (all cleared out), Gallery (all present), Messages (all present), My Files (shows files from previously installed programs that I can no longer access), Phone (works when I put the SIM card back in), Settings
Unfortunately, TB and the Play Store are both gone. I might be able to install stuff using adb or by copying files over. I haven't tried, but it doesn't look good. I tried reflashing the CF ROM. It didn't change anything. I suspect I may be looking at a factory reset at this point. I'm happy to try any other suggestions.
Thank you.

Wut? lol, just make one, it's free...
XDA does not spoon feed
I created an account and downloaded the stock ROM. I flashed the device and got most of the programs to appear again though the Play Store was still missing. I decided to cut my losses and just do a factory reset. I rooted again and put everything back in place. Now I'm experiencing the problem where I lost root after a day or so of use. I'll start a new thread.
Thanks for your help.
