How to set a temp / cpu freq. limit on the S4? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I updated my S4 recently to LineageOS (23.06.2018) which is using Android 7.1.2. It works perfectly fine and I'm amazed how well the S4 runs in 2018 with this updated OS.
The only issue which I encounter is a very high temperature around the CPU/GPU part of the phone, so high that I can barely touch the screen. The battery is not affected and just slightly warm.
I use this phone only as backup and beach phone, hence I don't care much about the speed. Is there any easy way to limit the CPU/GPU frequency (Possibly depending on any available temp sensor)?
Any solution to keep the temps lower will be appreciated, as I said I don't mind to sacrifice some speed.

Hi guys please can you post antutu stability screens

Hi Guys
Basically had two S4's from phones4u, my first was the black mist, which had intermittent faults and in my opinion overheated. This was sent
to Samsung who said that in a nut shell it was fine and the S4's ran warm get over it or words to that affect. As I was unhappy and out of the 28 day return I decided to sell. I was still in love with the S4 so bought another again from phones4u from an ad as an upgrade but I was given the receipt.
This one is the arctic blue version which is really sexy hehe and I love the look, problem is this one seems to also run hot in fact even hotter than the black mist, I was hoping as the blue model was newer Samsung would have identified the heating issues and built the next batches with possibly better thermal compounds or some other way of reducing overheating. This version also occasionally lags and jutters from time to time, I find when on power saving mode they both ran smoother.
My problem is I only have a few days left on the 28 day return so I want to make sure that I havent been that unfortunate to have 2 brand new s4's that are faulty, I know that the s4's run hot and I know that a lot of people are complaining about smoothness, but how hot is the norm and how smooth should they be?? is the question.
I've had loads and loads of phones including, htc one, iphone 5, S3, various windows phones, so I know how smooth smooth should be.
I would like to root and put a custom rom on but I'm holding out to know if this phone is faulty or slightly faulty so to speak, or if everyones S4 is as hot and every so often jerky, I find internet very jerky especially when using chrome browser simple things like scrolling, its not my wifi as my wifes s3 and ipad mini run smooth or smoother.
On Antutu my benchmarks vary from as low as 21000 to as high as 26000?, I know that Samsung is involved in this benchmark rigging thing but surely thats not right?, sometimes I have wifi on dont know if that makes a difference both to benchmarks and heat?.
When I do a stability test, the top half of the screen gets very hot and normally temps start at 30 and rise to around 40 with a gradual increase, as for the stability it goes from 140 to sometimes 70 (3 or 4 times) it also takes around 15% out of my battery for around a 10 min test.
I have attached screens as luck happens the last stability test the phone went to under 40 as you can see, I charged the battery left it a while then ran the test fresh, please can you run the stability test on your s4's guys and put my mind at rest or help me prove to phones4u my phones running hot.
My firmware is UBMGA - i9505
Many thanks
Mav
Of course s4 is hot when you use processor a lot or when you recharge s4. Mine hasnt ever become uncomfortable hot but it is warm. Antutu score doesnt mean anything because everybody has different apps running and so on. You had two s4 and it is almost impossible that both of the phones has problems. Remember that s4 is very powerfull and it is very tight package so it is normal if its hot.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
My SGS4 is always hot during playing games. Sometimes extremly hot. I've sent it back for warranty repair but they said it's ok. So no luck.
S4 is hot
its hotter than S3 i used to have. It says 1.9Ghz but in games or benches its sometimes lower even than 1.5Ghz because of thermal throttling... when i used 1.5Ghz as max in setcpu i had better results in 3dmark! yep! and antutu score become stable - a bit lower but stable, with 1.9Ghz i had 24000-25600. with 1.5Ghz i had 24300 almost every time.
But now im using UV kernel and i UV -0,50V and i set thermal throttling temp to 90'C, now my antutu score became almost stable at ~26100
I think samsung overclocked this S600 to much... 1.5Ghz is almost stable but 1.9Ghz is definitly not.

Lollipop Auto Brightness and Heating

Hi guys,
I am experiencing some strange "problems" ( or not ) with my N910C.
When I am using the auto brightness feature I believe my CPU and/or GPU is not performing as it should. For example, running AnTuTu with auto brigantines - 41-42k points, running it without auto brightness 51-52k points....
Also I believe the phone is lowering GPU and/or CPU performance very often due to temperature increase. My phone is not really hot but its not cold either.
I´ve tried games like Beach Buggy Racing and Modern Combat 5 and they do not run as smoothly as they should ( I think )
Is there any way to stop the CPU and GPU for lowering their frequencies due to temperature as I think the temperature is not high at all.
I am not using any power saver or anything else. Just pure stock Lollipop.
I had the same problem with KitKat. My best gaming and benchmark time is when my phone has been sleeping for a while.
Can someone confirm similar issues? For example if you run Antutu 3 times in a row what results are you getting? First around 50k, then the following around 41-42k
Thanks in advance.

Is it safe to change my CPU governor to "performance" to force max clock speed?

Is it safe to change my CPU governor to "performance" to force max clock speed?
I don't want to overclock my Note 4, don't worry, not talking about that. But I am talking about MAX clocking it - forcing it to run at maximum rated speed. I've already tested out SetCPU and used it to change my governor to performance which forces the clock to max, and it nearly doubled my framerate in many games, especially the ones that struggled to play on this device like Xcom:EW.
But I quickly turned it off because I wasn't sure it was safe to do in the new era of smartphones, what with their DVFS and all. I'm worried that I'm going to overheat the CPU, and it's not going to be able to downclock because of temperature anymore. I'm only modifying the governor, but what if I actually used SetCPU to just change the CPU clock to max, without even touching the governor?
Can I hurt my phone by doing this? Can I safely start forcing my CPU to run faster while playing games, knowing that the only thing I risk is my battery draining faster, or am I actually risking damaging components by doing this?
Hello and thank you for using Q/A,
your CPU will not be damaged, but the battery life time will be shorted.

I personally have used Performance governor on Moto X 2013 for almost the whole 8 months I had it, 24x7 I mean. Never had a problem, yeah maybe battery life was little less than normal but I never did really care about it. Then I ran the same governor for a good period of time on my Note 3 too, same, no problem at all. Like you said, in games the frame rate difference is massive, but I don't play much games, I simply used that governor because it gets rid off all those micro lags and jitters which are Android's trademark, I simply can't them, with default Interactive the micro lags are very apparent.
However with Note 4 I am pretty happy with the BluActive governor, it makes most of the micro lags to go away, so sticking with it.
In any case unless you plan to use a mobile phone for maybe 5 years or so, I don't see any problem at all with it, other than a slightly increased heat, and maybe a little less battery backup, but you will find so many comments which might scare you, that chip burns off if you run it and all that, but those mainly are BS.

High temps when backup/restore TWRP

Hi, with latest version of TWRP 3.02.2, I noticed the backups/restores are a bit faster than earlier versions. But temps are higher than I've ever seen them. At one point it reached 96c! I think this 3.0.2.2 version utilizes CPU more, or as if its overclocking the CPU to be faster, not sure. Due to this, I may revert to earlier 3.0.0.
What worried me is that with temps outside of the operating system, there is no safety mechanism to power off the phone. TWRP doesnt appear to have any safe operating limits. Am I alone in seeing unusually high temps in 3.0.2.2? (on G900f).

Hi,
Those temperatures seems very high for backup/restore. Usually after flashing a few ROMs, my phone will get to around 70c but will eventually cool down.
Some tips to help prevent overheating would be to make sure you have removed your case from your phone, lay your phone on a flat surface (e.g. table).
You can try downgrading TWRP, although I'm pretty sure it won't make much of a difference to temps.
Saber
its so normal to get such high temps
my s5 temp is around 59-75 c when doing operations in TWRP
BECAUSE TWRP USES ONLY CPU lol

Samsung Galaxy S5 inaccurate cpu temperature

I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S5 G900F, running the official Android 6 marshmallow update.
Sometimes when I try to take a picture with flash, it tells my that my cpu is too hot and it needs to cool down, before I could use the flash again. I downloaded an app to look at the temperatures, and after not using the phone for a while I made sure it was cold and the battery showed about 29c, but the cpu temp was about 50c. I don’t think this is the actual temperature, because every spot of the phone was absolutely cold. When I ran some slight tasks the cpu temp was rising to about 86c. The phone was indeed hot tot he touch and the battery temp was rising too, about 40c, but I still think the temperatures it is showing for the cpu are not right. That’s why I get some errors like that. The battery temp seems a bit high too.
Now my question is, is there a way to fix this? Is there a way to maybe calibrate the cpu temperature sensor? I tried everything, all the way up to resetting my phone to factory settings, but with no luck.
I also noticed that the download speeds are very slow, especially when I try to update or download an app from the play store, compared to other devices on the same network. I ran a speedtest and the results are normal, the same as other devices, but the real world download speed isn’t.
I hope someone could help me with this problems. The slow downloading speed isn’t really bothering me that much, but the inaccurate cpu temperature is. Sometimes it gets really hot, sometimes even with slight tasks yes, maybe that isn’t normal too.
