Hi Guys,
i wrote a small C#-Application for updating SpbWeather (maybe it should work also with other Weather-Applications) despite Proxy-Restrictions (like Vodafone, o2 etc.). This program emulates a normal Wap-Browser (with an exact User-Agent) and downloads a Weather-html-File of your choice to your PDA. In combination with Pico-WebServer and some little tweaks , SpbWeather updates with this local file.
First of all, it is a beta program. Use this program at your own risk. I will take no responsibilities for malfunctions or/and unintentional data traffic (and costs). It should be working fine, but nobody is perfect.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, here is the Step-by-Step guide what you have to do:
1. Install the lastest Microsoft Compact .Net-Framework on your PDA (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=9655156b-356b-4a2c-857c-e62f50ae9a55)
2. SpbWeather
You need a actual version of SpbWeather (it should be with working with other Weather-Programs too, e.g. HTC Weather or PocketWeather)
3. Download the SpbWeather-Template from Spb-Weather-Forum (or somethere else) you want to use. I attached a working template for www.wetter.com
4. Edit the Template-File and search the line "open_url(.......)" . Edit the value in the brackets to open_url("http://localhost/wetter.htm", "GET"); (the name of the .htm - file its your choice).
5. Copy the .tpl - File in the templates - Folder of SpbWeather and add a new City with this edited Template.
6. Install Pico Webserver on your PDA ( http://http://www.tucows.com/preview/200784)
7. Start Picowebserver, goto Settings and edit the Alias Settings. You can choose the default path of the webserver or you can choose another path. But remember this path, we'll need it. Now start the Server.
8. Ok, now you need the WeatherUpdater. Just copy it to a location of your choice and start it. Go to "Settings" and configure the Programm. There are five entrys you can edit.
a. WebServer:
Enter the complete url of the weather site and your town: (wich matched to the template you use for Spb Weather). In my case the Url is: http://www.wetter.com/mobile/wetter.php?id=43367&type=WORLD (enter wetter.com/mobile and you can search your town)
b. Local Web-Server
Enter the Path to the Root-Directory of your Picowebserver (see 6.)
c. Name html-File:
Enter the Name of the htm(l)-file to download...it must matched with the name you edited in the template-File (see 3.)
d. Update on Start:
Downloads the html-Weather-File on Programstart
e. Update-Interval:
Choose an interval for updating the Weather-html-File. You can chosse values between 1 and 1440 minutes. (1min - 24h). Remember, it produces data traffic you have to pay for (or you have a flatrate etc., that's your own risk)) In my example, one update produces 15kb of data traffic. Check various templates with less traffic (maybe less weather info).
With runnig Picowebserver and WeatherUpdater in the background, you can now Update SpbWeather every hour.
What do do next:
-----------------
a. It would be fantastic to integrate the webserver functionality into WeatherDownloader. But i've to check out how to make a Webserver in C#. Maybe someone can help me
Please report any bugs or wishes for further versions.
b. automatic installation with a cab-file and AutoStart functionality
c. HowTo for other Weather Programs like HTC Weather and PocketWeather
d. and many many more features
Pfischi
P.S: Sorry for my English

Screenshots in Progress
Nice release Pfischi, something I was looking for quite some ti...........well, forever

Update Methods and other information
0. Official Update Channels from Huawei
Before you start updating your favorite Honor 6 through OTA, Local Update (LU) or with The 3 Buttons (3B) method you have to understand what kind of ROM you have to download and update to.
The official channels from Huawei are currently only two, which makes the things easier.
The first one is the beta/dev channel. This channel usually includes new features and bug fixes that have yet to arrive at the stable ROM or they won't arrive at all.
The second one is the so-called "stable". It's usually polished and as possible as it can be bug free. If you don't know what ROM to Download use this channel.
An easy way to distinguish these two ROMs is the following.
1. Go to Settings
2. About phone
3. Build Number
There you will find a complex string that contains letters and numbers. You have to look for the last four or more characters. The chances are that the last 3 characters will be in the form of BXXX, where XXX are numbers. If it is in a form of B6XX or 4.XX.YY where XX is the month and YY are the day, on which, this ROM released, then you are on the beta channel. If the string is in a form of B3XX then you are in the stable channel. The last four or more characters may change in the future, please ask any active user, to guide you through, if you don't know in which channel you are on.
Before you start any update procedure please be sure that you have at least 33% of battery and you have a copy(backup) of your files.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
To update a Honor 6 there are two, plus one, methods. The one is through the so-called OTA (Over The Air) without the need to connect the smartphone to the computer. The other one is the classical one, that you have to download the ROM on your PC and then copy it, on the memory of your phone or in a removable disk (USB STICK).
1. OTA
The update through OTA, is the easiest, fastest and the most "bloodless". Depending on the update channel that you already present (read above), you will get the same channel update. Explaining a little bit further, if you are on the beta channel you will get the updates of the beta channel, if you are on the stable channel you will get the stable channel updates, there are no crossovers between OTAs*.
*There is only one situation, at the moment, when using a beta version you will end up, in the future (after several updates) updating to the stable channel. This is when Huawei will test a new version of EMUI. In more detail, when Huawei was testing the early versions of EMUI 3.0, it was basically a beta channel for this specific version. This beta channel, as it was an ongoing project, after several updates and due to the project's maturation, it resulted in the first stable version of EMUI 3.0, also known as version B307. After that, Huawei, again splitted the stable channel, in a new beta channel with 4.XX.YY codename and a new stable channel with code B3XX as described above.
1. Go to the Settings
2. Updater (second choice from the last)
3. And tap Check for updates
When you will do the third step (and there is an update to be done by Huawei) there will pop up a message and a wizard will guide you through the update process. When the download of the OTA get finished, the Honor 6 will restart itself, get into recovery and install the update, after all it will return to your home screen with the new update installed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Local Update (LU) or Update via USB drive (USB)
Before we continue explaining the Local Update procedure, let's distinguish the differences between Local Update and Update via USB drive options.
In order for the LU method to be completed, the file must reside in the memory of the mobile phone or microSD card. While on the USB method, the file must be in a removable disk (USB STICK) and be connected through USB OTG cable to Honor 6.
Usually because of the it's easiness the LU method is preferred.
1. Download the ROM from the official site of Huawei (See here) with the help of a Download Manager, like Free Download Manager in order to have better speed and an error free file.
2. The file that you have downloaded it's a zip file which contains a dload folder and a PDF file with a guide. The guide in the PDF is in Chinese, so it's not usable for the most of us here.
3. Extract the zip file wherever you feel like in your PC.
4. Copy the dload folder on the microSD card for the LU method or in a USB stick for the USB method. Before you do so, for the USB Method, please be sure that the USB stick is empty and formatted to FAT32. If dload folder is already present in either of the two methods, delete it.
5. Go to Settings ---> Updater ---> Menu (3 stripes in the bottom) ---> Choose either Local Update or Update via USB, depending on your choice above.
After the selection, the phone will reboot itself and will continue with the update procedure as described in the OTA method.
The OTA, LU and USB methods are not deleting your files, but it is highly recommended to take a backup of all your files before you start any update procedure.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Update through the 3 Buttons (3B)
Last but not least, there is an option to update with the 3 buttons. The so-called three buttons are, the Power On/Off + Volume Up + Volume Down. The method to update with the 3B are the same as the LU but the update procedure changes a little bit.
1. Follow the LU method until step 4 (you do step 4).
2. Turn off the Honor 6.
3. After the shutdown is complete, press the buttons I described above and hold them until the update procedure is started.
Be aware that this update procedures will delete everything in the Honor's 6 memory (not the microSD Card) so if you have any files in there, take a backup of them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Update through Leaked OTAs/ROMs
Attention! The following procedure is to be followed, only and only when, it is well written that the file that you have downloaded is a leaked one. If it is not, then please follow guides 1,2,3 as described above.
Moreover, the following procedure is to be followed, if not any other guide has been given with the leaked material.
Last but not least, the following guide is based on a leaked material inside a zip file. If you don't know what you are trying to do, please ask for more information or a confirmation that this particular method will work.
1. Download the zip* file.
2. Rename it to update.zip
3. Copy the update.zip file, to the dload folder (if there is none, create it. If there is already one present, delete it)
4. Follow the LU method from step 5 and beyond.
The zip file must contain folders, META-INF, patch, system and the file UPDATE.APP. There is a chance it may contain more or less files and folders depending on the leaked material. If the zip does not contain this folder, but there is another zip inside the first one, that contains this folder, then extract the second zip and follow the above procedure.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Information
If anything goes wrong with the update, you can always check the update log. First of all you will need a File Explorer that is capable of showing the folder that needs to be accessed. I have already tested ES Explorer and works great, other File Explorers may work too. As @chrissss91 told me, the update log can be found at /splash2/recovery_log , feel free to thank him
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All the above guides have been written following official guides from Huawei and personal experience from me and other myphone.gr and xda members. No responsibility will be granted, by following the above guides, if anything happens to you or your phone. By following and doing the above procedures or any combinations of them, you accept the above condition. Use the guides with your own responsibility.

Honor 6 Different editions
The Honor 6 currently is being sold in 6 different versions. The six different versions codenames are H60-L01, H60-L11, H60-L02, H60-L02 Unicom (L02-U), H60-L12 and H6-L04.
The L01 and L11 support only one SIM card (TD-SCDMA & TD LTE) but not European Networks (WCDMA, FTD LTE).
The L02, L02-U and L12 support two SIM cards (WCDMA 900/1200 & FDD LTE). The differences between L02 and L02-U are mostly in the boot logo which can be seen here.
The L04 supports only one SIM and it's the International edition of the Huawei Honor 6, and it's the only edition that officially distributed in Europe through hihonor and Huawei. The L04 supports WCDMA 900/1800/2100 and FDD LTE 800/1800/2100/2600/2600 (TD). This version is also being sold officially in Russia and India.
Storage: The L01, L02, L02-U, L04 have 16GB of storage and L11, L12 have 32GB
NFC: The only versions that support NFC are L11 and L12.
You can find a visual represent of all these in the following Google Spreadsheet by clicking here.
Enable Bubble Notifications from apps like FB Messenger, Link Buble etc.
Bubble notification was introduced, mainly to us by the Facebook Messenger and it's easiness to multitask between an opened app and the FB Messenger itself. After FB Messenger, many apps used this type of Notifications to interact with the user.
To enable these type of Notifications you should follow the procedure below.
1. Go to Settings
2. Notifications Manager
3. Go the right tab which is called Dropzones
4. Enable every app that you want to be able to have Bubble Notifications
5. Go to the left tab, Notifications, tap on the app that you enabled on the right tab and select Allow
After that, you will have to go to
1. Settings
2. Protected Apps
3. Make sure that the app is protected from closing.
For more help, please view the attached screenshots.
Auto Power On Honor 6 by alarm
The automatic power on of Honor 6 may seem a big help from some users. Although the Honor 6 doesn't have an option to do that by the settings, you can use the alarm app to do this.
1. Go to the Huawei's Alarm Clock
2. Create an alarm one minute earlier than the time that you want the phone to power on eg. if you want the phone to open at 20:00 you should create an alarm for 19:59
3. When you will turn you phone off don't forget to check the checkbox that says "Alarms will go off even when your phone is powered off. The next alarm will go off in XX minutes"
4. Then press OK
This will open the power on the Honor 6 automatically at the time that you want.
If the automatic power on of your Huawei Honor 6 is critical for you or your business please try it, before using it in a real environment.
Please see the image attached below.
You can on Google Chrome > Settings > Accounts add as many accounts you want.
And later we all see in the main options of Google Accounts.
bubble notification
good morning,
are holding an honor 6 with emui 3.0.
I wanted to enable notifications in the bubble for applications Gmail and Whatsapp.
Unfortunately in "dropzone" But I only see Skype and Twitter.
I checked for these two applications there is permission "allow notifications" and that they remain active even when I turn off the screen ("Blocked Applications").
Can someone please help me?
Also I wanted to know how I can save the default tab sd all downloaded files and photos downloaded from whatsapp.
thanks

Charging your battery fully to 100% is known to be harmful to the battery. Similarly, leaving the phone plugged in after charging is also bad. There is a safe way of charging your battery to say 90% and cutting off or disconnecting charger without physically switching off
I have posted on XDA on this. Please try and leave your comments there. This is not to spam but spread awareness. Honor users rarely get some tweaks or tricks

First things first, this guide is made mainly for our great LG G3 D85x. Some steps may or may not work for other phones...
Please note that the results of the following methods may vary. I would advice you don't do this on a daily driver or corporate phone.
Also note that these steps WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.
For increased chances of these working, update your KDZ to Lollipop first using OTA or Flash Tool.
If you don’t know what rooting, flashing and blah blah blah means, this probably isn’t the thread for you.
I do not own much of this stuff, credit really does go to the folks stated below. Do give them a shoutout!
Enjoy!
Complete guide to all things G3:
NOTE: The chapters are in chronological order, meaning everything after Chapter 2 assumes you already have root and unlock.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER 0: TERMINOLOGY (in my own words)
- Terms
- Tidbit
(To be honest, if you need to even look at this, this thread isn't for you.)
- Root: Gaining full administrative control of your device. "Jailbreaking" in terms of Android.
- ROM: The customized operating system that your Android runs on.
- Kernel: The thingy that links software and hardware
- Radio: The thingy that sends and receives messages, calls and data.
- Flash: Installing a zipped file in Recovery Mode
- Recovery: The software that allows tweaking and flashing, and other weird stuff that will destroy your phone.
- Fastboot: The thingy that allows recovery mode to happen.
- Brick: The term says it all.
- Bootloader: Quite literal; loads the phone for bootup.
- Nandroid backup: A backup-ed image of your current system
- ADB: Android Debug Bridge; some command line tool that sends information from and to the phone to, and from the computer
- CWM: ClockWorkMod; a recovery system
- XDA: The holy website that is full of weird stuff that makes your phone wayyyy better.
Now let's paint a picture:
Imagine you are your Android phone.
Before "rooting", you are trapped in jail.
Upon "rooting and unlocking", you are released from jail.
You go to a shopping mall named "XDA".
You find a credit card lying on the floor from the company "Recovery". On the back, it says there is no passcode required, and there is a infinite amount of money inside.
You enter a store and get a sweatshirt with the word "ROM" on it.
You didn't buy the shirt, the shirt just happens to be free, but still requires you to swipe your credit card anyways.
You keep the receipt as a "backup", just in case the shirt spoils.
Just then, you get greedy and get all the badges in the store.
Stupidly, you pin all the badges on your shirt, turning it as heavy as a "brick".
Then, the shirt rips, unable to put (it rhymes with boot) it back together again.
Luckily you still have the receipt to return the shirt, and return back to your good old disgusting shirt.

6. Reboot
7. DONE!
It is perfectly fine if the first bootup takes a while, that is perfectly normal. Upon boot, Android will optimize itself so just let it do it’s work. Do put the phone under a fan as it does tend to get hot when optimizing since it is at max brightness or some dumb reason.
If it takes ages (like over 5-10mins) to boot up, it means you have luckily bricked your phone! Do source the XDA indices for any unbricking tutorial, or keep a lookout for an update on this page for instructions. (I don’t have any/don’t need to find any as I have never bricked any Android, so ya.)

DO NOT dirty flash if your newer ROM:
- Doesn't allow/support it
- Has a major update
- Has a Android version jump (e.g. from Lollipop to M)
- Is a totally different ROM from the previous one (e.g. from Stock to Cyanogenmod)
If after dirty flashing you experience any ROM issues (e.g. battery drain, lag etc.), I would advice you to do a clean flash instead.

Honestly, I don't encourage battery managers such as "Battery Doctor" or "Clean Master (Speed Booster)" as realistically, it takes up more battery or RAM in trying to keep the app open to "properly manage the battery". Yes there are benefits such a having a zippier G3, but there are better methods out there.

FAQ:
- Any battery impacts?
Shouldn't be, so long as you follow the steps correctly.
- What if my weather shows "??" or "Unknown"
Go into the Widget Settings and Force Update
- My location isn't accurate!
Manually tell the widget your location, don't use auto.
- The weather isn't accurate!
For now, there's no choice as it isn't powered by the all mighty Google or AccuWeather.

Bumping = Unlocking with TWRP, so yes it is!
So long as you use the app accordingly, most probably you won't get any issues regarding the bootloader or recovery.

First things first, this guide is made mainly for our great LG G4 D815.
Enjoy!
Complete guide to all things G4:

Titanium Backup Method:
Use “Titanium Backup” batch backup
1. Menu -> Batch
2. Run -> Backup user apps + system data

- Notes: use “Google Keep”, it will be synced with the cloud
- User Dictionary: “User Dictionary Backup”
- Call Logs: “Call Logs Backup & Restore”
- Launcher (assuming you use Nova Launcher): Settings -> Backup & import settings -> Restore or manage backups
- Apps: “Helium” or any other app

3. DONE!
FLASHING:
Clean Flash:
1. Backup your data!
2. Reboot into TWRP Recovery
3. Go into settings and enable “Use Aroma File Manager”
4. Wipe Dalvik, Cache, System & Data
5. Flash your chosen ROM, basebands, firmware updates and other crap
6. Flash any GApps package. (the one I use: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/gapps-lp-gapps-pa-gapps-aroma-installer-t3010798; kudos to @raulx222 & @slim Team)
7. Flash anything else (e.g. frameworks, boot animations, splash screens, themes etc.)
8. Reboot
9. DONE!
OR:
Dirty Flash: (flashing without wiping anything, used for updating to newer ROMs or reflashing)
1. Reboot into TWRP Recovery
2. ONLY wipe Dalvik Cache
3. Flash your chosen ROM, basebands, firmware updates and other crap
4. Flash any NEWER GApps package. If you manually installed/updated through Play Store, skip this step.
5. Flash anything else (e.g. frameworks, boot animations, splash screens, themes etc.)
6. Reboot

1. Use “Titanium Backup” batch restore
2. Menu -> Batch

4. Once done, go to Backup/Restore on the main app interface
5. Restore manually: Calendar Storage, Internet Bookmarks, Messaging SMS/MMS Prefs, Phone SMS/MMS/APN, User Dictionary, Wi-Fi Access Points**
6. Launcher Settings: (assuming you use Nova Launcher) Settings -> Backup & import settings -> Restore or manage backups
**What can I manually restore?**
Red: DO NOT RESTORE, YOU’LL END UP BRICKING/BOOTLOOPING YOUR PHONE!!!
White: 99% safe, go ahead
Green: 70% safe, beware of potential brick

Honestly, I don't encourage battery managers such as "Battery Doctor" or "Clean Master (Speed Booster)" as realistically, it takes up more battery or RAM in trying to keep the app open to "properly manage the battery". Yes there are benefits such a having a zippier G3, but there are better methods out there.

Coming soon.
Several of the steps you list in here require root.
Many of the steps you list in message #1 require root priviledges:
Titanium Backup, any process using Root Explorer, Xposed, Greenify, AdAway all require root access. Maybe that requirement should be mentioned in each chapter.
eagerly waiting for any possible root methods.
i haven't got my hands on my G4, but it would be good to know that when my phone arrived i can root the hell out of it
i get my G4 v23-24, hopefully there is a root already then!!
*root is essential.
I would like to add a request for "enable wifi hotspot" to be added to the first post, when possible.
This is my first LG phone and I hope I can get the wifi hotspot working on Sprint once I get the G4 rooted.
Thanks a lot.

This gets added to almost any ROM anyways, so you should be fine.
Has anyone found a reliable place to get the LG G4 USB drivers? I've connected my G4 to the Mac, installed the drivers through the popup that appears, and doesn't work. The Mac can't detect the G4, and neither can adb.
EDIT: Never mind. Using LG PC suite seems to work. Adb connected.

True. Most of us just want root then we can use xposed to get the rest of the function we want.

Can we helps devs to get more info for root? I have the G4 currently
I'm an LG newbie. It would be nice if you could link drivers and flashing software in your post.
I've owned just about every Motorola, some HTCs and Samsung phones and rooted and rom'd for years. This will be my first LG. Motorola has just become too much a pain in this area though rumor is the BL is locked on the LG too. Even root and xposed would be enough to protect my privacy.
ordered mine today
now we wait for root
Hi guys

Have you tried PowerAmp or other non-stock music player? This would kill the deal for me. I suspect there are options and would love to know PowerAmp, in particular, works with the external card. I have way too much music I need to have with me which is why I require sdcard support.

I did not try the stock, because I have the full version of poweramp and it is working very well. My music is on the exsternal sd card
I spent weeks trying to find a way to install a Linux distribution alongside my Android devices, or replace Android with one entirely. While researching the possibility, I was really disappointed to learn installing a distribution alongside Android was already a 'fad' which had already come and pretty much gone. A lot of the methods that worked in 2012 and 2013, no longer work on current Android devices, or at least very few of them. However I don't go down without a fight. Please note, I did NOT create any of this software nor did I develop it. I just put it all back together, in a working order. Though it's pretty much impossible to brick your device using this guide, I still feel obligated to say: I am not responsible for any damage this guide may cause to your device, yourself, or the jealous friends you'll have after installation is completed xD
In order to install a Linux distribution, your Android device MUST be rooted. Unfortunately there is no way around that. After more than 2 weeks of research, reading and testing, I have managed to get three different distributions working across four devices, with plans to test it on at least one more device:
- Amazon Kindle HD 8.9 (Rooted with TWRP custom recovery and a custom CyanogenMod [CM] Marshmallow 6.0 ROM).
- Samsung Galaxy J1 (Rooted. Android Lollipop 5.1.1).
- Samsung Galaxy S3 (Rooted with TWRP custom recovery and a custom SlimRom Marshmallow 6.0 ROM).
- Samsung Galaxy S7 (Rooted, US Variant, Android Nougat 7.0).
- (Plan to test) Amazon Fire 7 (Rooted. Custom Lollipop 5.1.1 ROM).
The following guides will allow you to install any Linux distribution you desire (provided it's available). You can install the distributions as a .img on your internal storage/sdcard or partition part (or use all) of an removable sdcard (external storage). It is recommended you have at least 4GB of free storage space. If you want to try another distribution, it's just a case of deleting a few files or folders to uninstall them. Or you can partition another part of your sdcard (external storage). Please note you will not be able to repartition any internal storage.
These guides will be long. It will seem harder than it is. I really think this is one of the coolest things for Android I've stumbled upon. I haven't even begun to scrape the surface of what this allows you to do. Be patient and have fun
Part One: Installing a Linux distribution on internal storage
To get started, you need to do and have installed the following things:
- Make sure you have root.
- Make sure you have BusyBox installed and working.
- Terminal Emulator for Android, Termux and it's API or an SSH client.
- VNC Viewer for Android or your preferred VNC viewer.
- Linux Deploy
- AParted ( Sd card Partition )
1. Go to Sourceforge and download your preferred Linux .img. Those .img files are courtesy of a once awesome organization called 'LinuxOnAndroid'. Simply click on one of the nine distributions and download whichever one and size you prefer.
2. Extract the .zip in a folder on your PC. Name the folder the name of the distribution (i.e. Kali, Debian etc). **NOTE: You MUST download and extract all distributions on your desktop PC. These .zip files will not decompile and extract properly on your Android and the .img files will not boot.**
3. On your Android, using a root explorer, create a folder with the distribution's name in /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0. On your PC, in your extracted Linux distribution folder, copy and paste the .img file into the folder you created in one of those two storage directories.
4. If you haven't already, download and install Linux Deploy from Google Play.
5. It's now time to configure your distribution. Tap the three lines at the bottom right corner. You will then get a screen with a list of configurations. For the purpose of this guide, I have selected the Debian distribution. The first set of configurations should be as follows (See image below the list):
- Containerization method: chroot
- Distribution: Debian
- Architecture: armhf (This allows the Linux OS to be compatible with armv7)
- Source Path: (This will be an automatically selected URL and will vary from distribution to distribution. You should never have to change this configuration)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
6. Now we configure the type of installation we will be doing. For this particular guide, we are installing the distribution on internal storage. Please configure your settings as listed (See image below the list):
- Installation Type: File
- Installation Path: /sdcard/Debian or /storage/emulated/0/Debian
- Image size: 6000 (The lowest recommended allocation is 4000MB [4GB])
- File System: ext4 (Not all devices support ext4. Some only support ext2 or ext3. If ext4 doesn't work, try one of the other two. You will also have to select the proper .img format from LinuxOnAndroid i.e. ext4, ext3, ext2).
- User Name: android (You can choose any name you like. This will be used to connect to the OS via a VNC viewer later on).
- User Password: ******* (Although the password is automatically generated, you can make this any password you want. This will be used to connect to the OS via a VNC viewer later on).
7. Set the configurations below See images below the lists):
- Privileged Users: root (This will be the name given to you when entering a root shell via the sudo command. You can change this to your liking)
- DNS: Automatic Detection
- Localization: en_US.UTF-8 (Language and region selection. If you're not sure of this setting, use Google to determine your local i.e. en = English, US = United States)
- INIT: Make sure box is checked to enable
- Init System: run-parts
- Mounts: Make sure box is checked to enable
- SSH: Make sure box is checked to enable (This allows you to set up an SSH client to connect to the Linux OS as opposed to using a VNC viewer)
- GUI: Make sure box is checked to enable (This tells the Linux OS to create a graphical interface so you're able to use a VNC viewer)
- Graphics Subsystem: VNC
8. Now you can configure GUI settings. This creates graphics of high or low quality. You are able to customize these settings to your liking and they will vary from device to device based on screen sizes and resolutions. In this case, I have the distribution loaded on my Galaxy J1 so these settings are set to my taste based on that device (See image below the list):
- Display: 0
- Depth (bits): 24 (The higher the number, the better the graphics)
- DPI: 100 (Dots per inch)
- Width: 800
- Height: 480
9. Tap the back button once. From the main screen swipe right or tap the three lines in the upper left corner and tap the settings option. Here you can configure the application settings for Linux Deploy. A lot of these options are already selected and some don't require any changes. Please set the settings according to the list below (See image below the list):
- Lock Screen: Make sure the box is checked
- Lock WiFi: Make sure box is checked (Some devices will turn off WiFi when you aren't using Android for a period of time. Some carriers and manufacturers do not give you the option to 'keep WiFi on' when the device is 'asleep.' Checking this box will allow the application to attempt to keep WiFi on)
- Wake Lock: Make sure box is checked. (This option can be set to your taste. However, to avoid problems with Linux Deploy and a VNC viewer in case you don't shut down your Linux environment or Linux Deploy, keep this box checked)
- Language: English (Obviously this option would change depending on your preferred language)
- Font Size: 10 = default (This changes the size of the text in Linux Deploy application only)
- Scroll Size: 100 (This tells Linux Deploy how many lines of text you're able to scroll back and look at in the application)
- Theme: Dark or Light (Take your pick)
- Timestamp: Shows the timestamp next to the lines of test in the application. Totally up to you)
- Show Icon: Make sure box is checked (Some devices will attempt to shut down Linux Deploy, even with root. Displaying the icon in the status bar allows a constant notification to be present, which generally stops the system from shutting down the app)
- Stealth Mode: Hides the application icon within your launcher
- Autostart: Check the box if you want Linux Deploy to open and start the Linux OS each time you reboot. This is not recommended especially for lower end/older devices
- Autostart Delay: Tells Linux Deploy how long after the system boots, to open and activate the container (Linux OS)
- Network Trigger: Check this box if you plan on leaving your distribution running while traveling with your device.
- Terminal Command: telnet 127.0.0.1 5023 (This allows you to open a terminal in your distribution that connects to the device. This is just a standard terminal so you don't have to open a terminal emulator in Android. In order to use this you'll need to install the telnet package once your distribution is operational)
- ENV Directory: Auto selected. No need to change (Not sure what exactly this does)
- Path Variable: Blank. (Also not sure of this setting so I didn't change it)
- Enable CLI: Make sure this box is checked (Allows the application to use a command line within, I believe, both the application and the distribution)
- Update ENV: Update the operating environment (This updates the operating environment setup of Linux Deploy. (Please see the next step on how this function works)
- Remove ENV: Removes/deletes the operating environment (This removes/deletes the operating environment. Anytime you change the settings in this settings menu, you MUST tap Remove ENV and tap yes. Then tap Update ENV and yes to update the settings you just changed. Only do these last two
steps when completely done changing settings)
- Telnet: Enable telnetd daemon (Make sure box is checked. You need this option if you choose to install and use the telnet application on your Linux distribution)
- Port: 5023 (Preconfigured. The port that telnet uses to connect to your device inside the Linux OS via terminal)
- Localhost: Make sure this box is checked. This is a security feature which allows only the localhost (that's you inside the Linux OS) to be allowed to connect to the distribution. Leaving the box blank can potentially set yourself up to be hacked, in a bad way. Leave it blank at your own risk and is you know what you're doing)
- Enable Httpd daemon: I am not sure what this does. The box is preconfigured as blank, so I left it as such
- Debug mode: Enable debugging information if you wish
- Trace mode: Enable if you wish.
- Logging: Enable if you wish. The setting below it tells Linux Deploy what type of file to save logs as
10. Now once all those settings are configured, scroll up and tap on Remove ENV and yes when it asks. Then tap on Update ENV and yes when it asks. You have not configured Linux Deploy. Tap the arrow (back) at the top left of the screen.
11. Tap the three dots at the top right of the screen. Tap 'Install'. If everything has been properly configured, and you placed your .img of your distribution in the correct place, Linux Deploy should begin to install your chosen distribution.
If installation doesn't work or fails to install for whatever reason, don't worry; it will NOT brick you're device. It is impossible. You CAN however, corrupt your sdcard, which usually just means you have to reformat it completely and repartition it (but that is a discussion for my next thread). The installation process requires a constant connection to WiFi until it completes. The time the installation takes depends on several variables i.e. your chosen img size and distribution, how good your WiFi connection is and so on. Based on my experience, installation took anywhere from 10 minutes to as long as 40 minutes. If for whatever reason it doesn't complete installation, it will list errors. Be sure to get a screen shot of those errors. I've never had Linux Deploy freeze during installation. You may see the same line of text for a few minutes, especially during the first few minutes of installation.
12. Installation will be complete when you see <<deploy appear as the last line of text. Tap stop at the bottom of the screen. When the process completes (usually a few seconds), tap the three dots at the top right again. Tap configure. This will assure your Distribution is configured to the proper settings that we set up earlier. It will also install any needed updates. This process could take anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute or two (usually). When completed tap stop.
13. You should be ready to launch the distribution. Tap start at the bottom of the screen. If absolutely no errors are given, this should boot up your distribution. If you see the word 'skip,' this is ok and is NOT an error.
14. Now here's the fun part. It's time to configure a VNC viewer. For the purpose of this guide, and one of two VNC viewers I use, we will be setting up VNC Viewer for Android. It will start in landscape mode, but you can rotate once the viewer connects to the distribution. Remember the settings you configured in Linux Deploy? Your distribution will be your chosen height and width once it loads.
15. You will need to set up VNC Viewer for Android as follows:
- Nickname: android (Or the name you chose in Linux Deploy as the 'username')
- Password: The password you set up in Linux Deploy
- Address: 127.0.0.1 (This should be universal for all devices and is what the Linux Deploy application uses to connect)
- Port: 5900 (Also preconfigured in Linux Deploy and it's the port it uses to connect)
- Username: You can leave this blank. I usually do
- Color Format: 24-bit color (4 bpp) (This allows for the best quality graphics possible. And honestly, the graphics are pretty great)
- Local Mouse Pointer: Check the box for a track-pad type mouse (I think? Should enable the mouse to act like a track pad on a laptop. Leave unchecked to use the mouse as pointer tapping?)
- Force Full Screen Bitmap: Make sure box is checked (Could be preference, but I've always had the box checked)
- Use Immersive mode (Devices running KitKat 4.4 and above ONLY)
- Use Wake Lock: Check the box if you desire
- Repeater: No repeater (Not a clue what this does)
That's it. You should be configured. Scroll to the top of the screen in the VNC viewer and make sure the box is checked where it says 'keep' to save the settings when you restart the application.
Now the moment of truth. Can I have a drum roll please? tap, tap, ap, tap, tap.....tap on connect.....iy might take a second or two for your distribution's wallpaper to appear. You may get an error box that pops up just before it fully boots. Just tap on ok or use the 'mouse pointer' to tap it. Sometimes the distribution boots a tad slower than the virtual connection through the viewer.
That's it! You have successfuly installed a Linux OS alongside your Android device. You can interact with your device in a terminal and view files and folders on your distribution, that exist on your device. Perhaps the coolest part of all, you now have access to hundreds, if not thousands of applets in the terminal. Tap on the far bottom left corner icon that will bring up your menu. Tap on system tools and tap on the terminal. Now you can use Linux terminal like it was a full, operating system...because it is You also get a root shell. In terminal type:
Code:
sudo -i
If you want to install an application, for example git (github for Linux. You have access to just about every repository on github now) you need to have a root shell first. Type in the terminal:
Code:
sudo -i
apt-get install git
Debian on my Samsung Galaxy J1, Lollipop 5.1.1
Type in the letter Y if propted. To get a list of all available applications you can install with that command (this is a very, very long list), type in the terminal:
Code:
apt list
To exit the VNC connection ONLY, simply tap your recent apps button and swipe it away. To stop the Linux distribution, in Linux deploy, tap the stop button at the bottom of the screen. Then tap the three bars at the top left and tap exit. This should be done EVERY time you want to end your session in Linux Deploy. Do NOT exit or stop Linux Deploy via the recent apps button.

Like your avatar. Speaking of Kali, I installed that one first. Love it. But I get a 404 when trying to upgrade most of the add on 'security' tools. Is there any way I can get those to work or an I out of luck?

404 error is .sources list problem usually providing you allocated enough space for Kali. May have to either use original ones or replace with rolling ones.

10000 should be enough? I will have to try it again and see what happens.

Yes should be plenty Kali comes with like several hundred tools so I'm pretty sure it's over 4gig so that will be fine

Also not trying to sound like I know everything because I don't! I just love to learn and love Linux and Android. Im just now back on here I authored roms for the Note 2 years ago so it's been a long time lol. However I have used Linux for years and made custom distributions and kernels. Android has changed so much I'm catching up lol

So I had 3/4 of the second Guide written when the house lost heat. It got so cold my fans on my PC were starting to run too slowly, so it shut down as a precaution. I lost the work I had done on the second guide. So until I get heat back at home, I can't write the second guide. Apologies for the delay.
Latest Ubuntu running like a champ Thanks man!
Though any idea on how to make the screen bigger (without zooming in)?

You have to mess around with the VNC settings in Linux Deploy. Might take a few times to tweak to your liking.

Though it's pretty much impossible to brick your device using this guide, I still feel obligated to say: I am not responsible for any damage this guide may cause to your device, yourself, or the jealous friends you'll have after installation is completed xD!

Quick question for anyone who might know...
I'm running Debian on my Xperia Xc, and I'm interested in copying files back and forth from Linux to Android. I was able to figure out how to mount the loop device, and get access to it in terminal, but files don't show up in file manager, even though I go to the same directory I can see them in terminal.
How can I get the device to show up in the file manager?
Thanks
Edit - I was able to get it working in reverse, (show my Android file system on Linux), by using custom mount point option in LD, so I guess that works... Would still be interested to know if there's a way to do it the other way...
Question, Does installing a Linux Distro in this fashion allow one to pair and access simple B/T serial devices other than a B/T mouse our keyboard? I installed GNU Root Debian Jessie and got is working with LXDE but
none of my tracking apps that have to use a USB or B/T connection to an outboard receiver are accessible. Don't have access to /dev so I could change permissions on the ports the GNU Root Debian. Wireless or USB peripherals
are useless. I want to specifically run Xastir with outboard datastreams. Piece 'o cake with a laptop but no dice with GRB. Kurt KC9LDH
Any idea how to get it to work with magisk? I think it's due to busybox not working but when set to chroot, nothing happens when trying to start or install.

I have no idea actually. I only have two devices with unlocked bootloaders and niether of them have magisk. Sorry I'm not more familiar with it.

Ahhw that's a shame. It really is the cleanest way to root since apps like Netflix will still be available in the play store and Google pay etc will still work.
But I have a module which should have put busybox in /system/xbin (and it works in termux, I can type "chroot")
Edit: I'm a bit further, I set PATH to /system/bin/sh and chroot now at least runs, but it won't mount the img, let's download that again..
Edit2: mounting container gives me a fail... Any idea?
Okay I've got debian working by installing it into a folder instead of an IMG file. For some reason the img didn't work (might be android 8.1 or magisk related). I also didn't have to download an img from sourceforge as the app can download the files itself.

An .img works best if you use external sdcard. You can partition it or use the whole thing.
