WIFI Throttling Issue - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Strange issue when downloading large apps (e.g. 30 MB or greater) from the play store or big downloads on my home WIFI, my Essential slows to crawl after a percentage has been complete.d Interestingly, if I hotspot it to my other phone which has much slower download speeds it doesn't throttle and I maintain a consistent download speed. Almost seems as though the modem can't handle higher download speed so it automatically throttles to prevent corruption. Anyone experience an issue like this? Happens on the latest version of Oreo and the latest beta of Android P.

I can confirm the same thing. Thought I had broken something haha.

this happened to me yesterday, to where almost the download never moved, this was from restoring all apps from a clean wipe, it worked when i turned off wifi and just used my lte

Not seeing any issues for downloads on Verizon and P Beta2

I sure hope it's a bug and it's fixed in a future update. Even my streaming movies gets affected. The quality goes from HD to SD. Wondering how widespread this issue is. I'd figure if it was, this forum would be blowing up with complaints. Seems to be happening to only a few of us so I'm trying to narrow down the cause. By any chance are any of you using a Netgear router. Wondering if it just doesn't play well with Netgear.

Happy it's working for you. I've done what you did, factory reset several times, upgraded to the beta Android P and still no joy. Such strange issue. On LTE and tethering to another phone it works fine. Only thing I can think of is the phone isn't able to handle the WIFI speeds so it's throttling down to avoid corruption. I can live with the throttling, but it's throttling so excessively it's less that 1x cell speeds.

Yep, same here. I am rooted. Looks like it started with June update.

When I have the time, I'll roll back to the May update. I'm assuming this is possible to do so without bricking since our bootloaders are unlocked.

It's definitely a problem following latest security update. I'm on stock Oreo and had downloaded all my apps in initial setup without a problem. Then security update and play store downloads just crawl. Either Essential or Google needs a fix.

Been having the same issue since the July update. I've tried numerous times now and simply can't get the previous build to flash properly on my phone. Guess it's being stuck with a gimpy phone until this is fixed.

Just picked up an Essential Phone on the April update. No problems with Wifi whatsoever. One of the updates after April nuked the wifi. Definitely an Essential issue because I also have a Pixel 2 XL on a July update which has no problems.

Android p
Hi Dakota, I'm experiencing the same problem and I don't have the solution but could you tell me how to upgrade to Android p

New owner of PH1, as well. I was having this exact same issue. Just logged in to report that the just released Android Pie DID solve this issue for me. I tested downloading large files over WiFi from both the Play Store and a podcast app I use. No more slowing to a crawl after 30MB or so.

I also experienced the same wifi download issue. It seemed that the first 15MB was downloaded in no time, and then it started to crawl up little by little. It was not even slowing down gradually but more like hitting a wall.
Updating to Android 9 also solved this problem. In fact, the problem went away before the update was completed.

Can also confirm, I had this issue on the Oreo June update. Just overall radios performance was bad, and 5ghz WiFi networks were specifically extremely poor and throttling was surefire, not on the 2.4ghz network though.
Nonetheless, the Pie update has fixed this issue dramatically for me *knock on wood! However, may be a placebo, I do notice some throttling in the Play Store sometimes, but again, could be a placebo ...

I was forced to sideload the Pie update as it would have been a couple of days on my WiFi to download it...... but having done so it's mostly gone. I still see issues with WiFi once in a while ("lockups" that go away after 10-15 seconds) but its MUCH improved over the June Oreo update.

Android 5.0.1 Changes

While there are several threads announcing the release of Android 5.0.1, in regard to the Nexus 6, most of them seem to be filled with posts relating to the availability, instructions for sideloading, etc.
This thread is to discuss the CHANGES that you have noticed between 5.0 and 5.0.1, and as this is the Nexus 6 section, it should really relate to changes on that device only. You may list changes you've personally noticed, or published changes, but please indicate the source. I, like many of you, no doubt, am very curious to see what is new, fixed, broken, etc.
http://aosp.changelog.to/aosp-LRX21V-LRX22C.html
On 5.0 I kept having the cloud print service or whatever keep crashing, on 5.0.1 I had the Amazon kindle app keep showing a notification Amazon kindle stopped for about 12 hours and had to reboot my phone. (Kept throwing the notification up about every 20 minutes on 5.0.1)
My phone has also been unable to chromecast netflix for the last week and I have to use my gf's nexus 6 to chromecast netflix. Weird little problems with applications on both operating systems.
Edit: Finally re-installed netflix and it fixed chromecasting.
It would be nice to see a list of changes (In language a typical person speaks rather than the jumbled mess that those AOSP changes look like)
I agree. Those AOSP changes are not that easy to understand. Also, they are just to the Android Operating System but doesn't the OTA also contain a new Modem and possibly other driver updates that would fix other issues with our phones? Those fixes and changes would not be in the AOSP list.
On a second note, why does Google do this? They obviously know whats changed. How hard is it to publish a simple list?
Is 5.0.1 fixing the slow text/multiple texts sent issue for Sprint users? People are getting my texts like 10 times quite frequently, I read somewhere that this version fixes that.

It doesn't.
Hell, I'm on AT&T and have the slow text issue. It'll stay stuck on "sending" for 3-4 minutes sometimes. Not sure if it sends multiple times or not, haven't had anyone complain to me that they got the same message several times.
I think I saw there is a new radio... Would be interested to know if signal reception is any better

Work around AP misbehavior on EAPOL-Key descriptor version
It looks like some APs are incorrectly selecting descriptor version 3
(AES-128-CMAC) for EAPOL-Key frames when version 2 (HMAC-SHA1) was
expected to be used. This is likely triggered by an attempt to negotiate
PMF with SHA1-based AKM.
Since AES-128-CMAC is considered stronger than HMAC-SHA1, allow the
incorrect, but stronger, option to be used in these cases to avoid
interoperability issues with deployed APs.
This issue shows up with "WPA: CCMP is used, but EAPOL-Key descriptor
version (3) is not 2" in debug log. With the new workaround, this issue
is ignored and "WPA: Interoperability workaround: allow incorrect
(should have been HMAC-SHA1), but stronger (is AES-128-CMAC), descriptor
version to be used" is written to the log.

I'm seriously noticing my battery is better then it was yesterday before I flashed 5..0.1 I was roughly 34%, which was not really bad, after 12 hours of my normal use. Today, 50%, same time as yesterday. I will keep an eye on it, but thats what I'm seeing. Everything else seems about the same to me.

Not sure if it was 501 or the gplay music update, but my music sounds much more clear now. No more cloud print crashes.. Hoping my signal issue was fixed (sprint) but as im deployed right now i only use wifi.

Google Play downloads at crawling speeds

My Google play downloads over WiFi very quickly hit 15mb then at about 18mb there's a slow down and by 20mb I have a crawl in speed if any movement at all. Often I have to toggle WiFi just to finish downloading an app, unless it's under 20mb. If it's under then no problems are apparent. This problem was the same at my work place wifi.
I have now factory reset, and it's frustrating to download anything over 20mb. Nothing has changed. I don't believe this problem occurred before the final updates to the phone, when I transferred from another Android. I had to factory reset and start new without transferring settings due to a screen timeout glitch preventing me from changing dim settings. This makes me feel like it has something to do with the update to a newer build.
I don't seem to have this issue with browser downloads or speed tests. Does anyone have an idea about the problem?
Same issue. I can flip over to LTE and it works fine and then back to WIFI which works for a few apps and then completely stalls again (estimated an hour to download Amazon Shopping).
Just got the phone yesterday, so not sure what is going on or if this is a new problem. Just trying to set it up for the first time.

Thanks for the suggestion; however, no luck. Downloaded an app or 2 fine and then hits the 17-18G app limit and comes to complete stop.

Just a few more findings...
Switching over to LTE works fine. Plowed through the rest of my Play Store Apps. Switching back to WiFi brought along the same issues again.
Everything else on the phone via WiFi is fine. Netflix, Hulu, everything.
For me, the Google Play Store is the only thing affected.
Thanks.
This isnt an essential problem but a google related issue with the july update
Try turning off wmm on your router and see if that helps. Just remember you did as it may wonk your voip calling when your connection is under load.
Thanks joewoo. Maybe I'll hang on to this phone and keep an eye out for this being fixed.
Codeworks, seems like we have an identical problem. I'll let you know if I find a fix. I'm in talks with tech support currently. Waiting for them to respond to my currently escalated case with them. Let me know what you find.
I'll try the other suggestions.
This is a known issue I've seen others complaining about elsewhere on the web. Common factor for most has been the July security update. I thought I'd try out the Android p beta 2 and it's doing it there as well.
I noticed it takes a long time to start the download. Once it starts it goes normal. It's as if Google is doing some security scanning or WiFi check or reworking the app for your download..... But wasn't doing it on my Moto X Pure with 7.1 yesterday.

I'm seeing this behavior outside of Google Play as well. I can't download any file larger than 25-30 MBs from Google Drive without the download stalling. I guess doing a hard reset won't fix anything so I'm not sure if there's anything to do except wait for the next monthly patch.

Or you could completely ignore the post 3 above you where he references WMM and your router...
If what I read is correct... Google did the stupid in prioritizing Android downloads... So your router things it's basically junk, thanks to WMM... Turn it off...
Or don't... I don't really care
What's with the attitude? I missed that. I'm sooooo sorry. Jeez. S8+ works fine. I guess I don't really care either.
I dont think it is a Google problem. When I download podcasts using wifi in Castbox, I have the same issue.
Just installed Android P on my new Essential Phone and the restore from Google Play already takes hours for 120 Apps...
Download of a single App from the Play Store takes over 20 minutes..

I've tried the WMM, turned it off on my nighthawk router, and it doesn't work.
also this issue also happens on a fresh install of android p
I have lg 5x and ph1. my ph1 has the exact same problem (75k to 18mb fast, then slow, then crawl). 5x has no problem. could be oreo issue?
I do not want to mess with my router since everything else works great. but i might try it. it's not like i'm afraid to but more like a hassle and then i'll have three upset women on my back until it's back up
WMM setting on Asus router has no effect.
Same issue as others reported; anything under ~20MB downloads quickly, past that the download speed is limited to about 100 KB/s.
EDIT: I want to point out that downloading any file, from any server (including e.g. a large document from OneDrive) halts to a crawling speed of just 100 KB/s after about 20MB. I tested my other devices on the same network (a Windows PC and a Moto Z2 Force), and those other devices don't have this issue. There must be something wrong with Essential's last update.

I had the same experience. It wasn't even enabled on my router. Both my Samsung devices (Tab S2 and S8+) work without issue. I rolled back to 8.1 for other reasons and it's still not working correctly so it may be related to the July patch as others have suggested. Having said that though, my S8+ is on the July patch as well so who knows? Maybe just an Essential issue? Hopefully it will be addressed in the next patch.
I am seeing this issue on AOSiP, not running Essential stock. On downloads (AFH, opengapps.org) and Play Store. And I don't think it has to do with the July security patch because the same downloads on my OP3T (AOSiP w/ July security patch) do not show the same issue.
I can reproduce it every time on the PH-1 when trying to download opengapps using Opera browser. The download is wire speed, then slows to ~100KB/s. Interestedly enough, the downloads from opengapps.org don't seem to have the issue using Chrome (9 of 10 times it is full speed for the entire download).
It seems like it is device related, but since I am running a custom ROM I can't exactly call for technical support. I am hoping someone finds out what the core issue is...
Does anyone know if the baseband was updated in the June/July release?

Super lagging & freezing after newest fw upgrade

My S10+ becomes super lagging and sometimes freezing after newest fw upgrade (G975FXXU1ASE5) on May 22. Anyone having the same problem?
First thing i'd try if it was mine, if you haven't already, is a factory reset. Between Googles backup and Samsungs backup you can get it pretty much back the way you had it before resetting. I always make sure to do a fresh backup using both Google and Samsung first. Then Factory reset. Full restore using google when system asks which backup you want to use, use the latest one you just made of course, then restart and do the Samsung restore through Samsung cloud on top of Googles. I usually get all apps and Data restored without missing much. Home screens and widgets are restored. It's almost like i didn't do a reset at all. If it's still Laggy, then factory reset again and don't restore it. See how it works then. That way you're not restoring any App or setting that could've been causing your issue. It looks like you've been around here about 10 years so this all may be nothing new to you, but this is how i would do it.
Factory reset doesn't seem to help according to reports about rhis update.
Okay well flash in Odin and use CSC to perform a full wipe on the device... See if you still have the same issue. Consider Frija or Samfirm
People report it's something to do with the WiFi drivers, try switching it off and use mobile data to see if it persists

i dont really want to use the factory reset option because you wont know which app causing the problem.
im trying disabling app by app. so far i guess theres also something wrong with the fingerprint driver. i have a feeling the lagging always starts with fingerprint then it causes the whole system lagging and freezing.
maybe the optimize battery usage feature is way too aggressive? it freezes the fingerprint service while system tries to wake it up then it causes an endless loop and end up with a memory leak?? just blindly guessing so pls correct me if am wrong.

Workaround for this is to switch off WiFi as there is some problems with the WiFi certificates.
Use Mobile data for the internet connection and you will not face any laggyness or issues.

BTW people with problem, do you remember in developer options if there was before this update option to enable hardware acceleration for modem?
Could you for test try disable that option and reboot phone, or enable if it was disabled...just a hunch..
I had troubles with google app not responding at all and whole system became extremely laggy. Disabling bixby all together fixed problem. Now phone feels smooth and responsive even battery life has improved.

OOS 9.0.15 Slow wifi

Hi guys,
noticed a strange thing with wifi last days. I don't know it has to do with the last update but it came to my attention that wifi speeds were superslow so I opened ookla speed test and let it run. (just for info; before I got up to 90+ Mbps down/10 down on my home network with this phone).
Results on the same network are now around 3 Mbps down/9 up.
At first I thought it was a problem with my network but I did the speedtest on my Mi pad 4 and there I got normal speeds of 91 Mbps down/7 up.
Any idea what's going on here?
I'll add a screenshot of the 2 tests performed (OP6T and Mi pad 4)
I'm all stock, non rooted and on OOS 9.0.15.
Thanks for your time
Small update; after rebooting phone a few times I managed to get to about 40Mbs download but still not the full 90 available

I am on OB15 but mine is working fine. One thing I did notice on mine though is if I did the OTA (Smaller incremental update) that I would have problems sometimes. Since I started downloading the full update and putting that on my SD and updating with that I don't run into as many problems. I also go into recovery and wipe cache after updating.
Thanks for the info. Flashed the full update and cleared cache but still the same (although I'll definitely will do my next updates this way as you're saying it's causing less trouble).
Finally got it fixed by forgetting the wifi network and reconnect again. Stupid I didn't think about it earlier.

Glad you got it fixed...I admit I didn't think of that either LOL. Sometimes the fix is so simple we just look right past it. But yes, I have had way less problems updating with the full update instead of letting the phone just download the incremental parts.
I'd check your router and other sources I have no issues on Wi-Fi other than the fact that I cannot max out my connection unless I'm hardwired. I have FiOS 500/500.

Android 10 - RAM management issues?

I've updated to Android 10 recently and, while I enjoy the improvements to the performance, I have been far from impressed with the phone's RAM management. Sometimes, the phone would just randomly fail to launch any apps. I would just tap on any app I want to launch from the home screen or in the app drawer and the phone would just stall. Maybe after quite some time, the phone would initially launch the app but at crawling speed and fail to completely load it. The only way out is to tap the home or the recent apps button multiple times. Also, when opening the recent apps view, I don't actually find the app that failed to launch in the recent apps at all.
Is it only me or is this a known issue? Will formatting my phone do any help?
I am having a similar issue. It occurs randomly, and I have to reboot to fix it.
Same here.
The only way to recover for me is to reboot.
I am hoping the October release will have a fix.
Reference from today's Oct update: A-138323667 - Fix for memory drain in UI on all Pixel phones. I am betting this will fix yours as well

Yes, hope we get those fixes also (though only mentions security ?). I also hope the sensor calibration fix might stop phone waking up when in the car and we hit even a smallish bump, it never used to happen on 9.

Damn! I thought it probably would not be fixed as I believe we only get they security updates fast each month. We'll have to wait & hope we get the fixes soon. I haven't even hand chance to update yet! Lol
Sitrep: updated successfully to the latest update (October security patch). 41 hours of uptime have just passed as I was writing this and so far, I only had a similar issue with Google Chrome (failed to load any pages) but as soon as I opened the App Info and cleared 2 gigs of cache it went back to normal. Didn't get that freezing issue anymore. Looks like it was fixed indeed. Awesome!
I'll still keep an eye on it.
To my shock, it appears that the October security update didn't fix this issue. It may have taken more uptime to occur but it is still there. I think at this point I'm better off switching back to Android Pie custom ROMs.
October version seems better to me. Not as good as Pie but the freeze is not permanent to a point where I have to reset to recover.
Now, when it freezes, it takes about 3-5 seconds to recovers.

Whatever game you're playing...
Turn the volume off...
It's an Audio HAL issue that no one is acknowledging

Not playing games. No audio.
Just in the midst of switching between tasks or starting a new app.
Freeze is less frequent and when it happens, the OS recovers within a few seconds.

Did you clean flash?
I had similar issues when I dirty flashed from P to Q.
Although there are defo some Audio HAL issues on Q as mentioned in a previous post, noticeable when trying to play music through the dongle.
Sitrep: switched to AOSiP 10 (20191012 build), never had a single RAM management issue since. Not sure if it's because of clean flashing the ROM, switching to f2fs or whether it's the ROM that has some fixes. But, well I'm a happy man now
Custom roms are always way better than stock, it's like a show car next to a stock lol
