I can get rid of the dock but apparently can't recover the screen space left by it? Nothing I try to put down there will stay, it just bounces up to above where the dock used to be.
Is there a way to utilize all the screen space (minus the status bar, of course).

I have no idea how it happened, but my launcher icon (4 square looking thing) has disappeared! Now there is a star in that middle spot that prompts me to drag something there...
I am running the stable 7.1 build of CM7 booting from the SD card. I tried a reboot to verify...it is gone.
How do I get it back?
Where the launcher was, swipe your finger up (if holding vertically). You can hide the launcher by swiping down to give yourself a full length dock.
I found it. I think my kids must have played with it. I was able to add it back using the menu>+add option (still learning here!)
Occasionally mine disappears just from quickly tapping for the app launcher (Yes my screen is clean ). Just have to swipe it to make it return, or just use the dock function instead.
After a successful update OTA 3 to ICS, I still have an ugly icon launcher. It seems to be not working, it does not do anything, how do I get rid of the icon?
Another thing is ugly battery icon, exchanged by Lenovo. Is there a classic icon of the ICS?
try a custome launcher from the market and change the full look of the screen

I don't think you can hide the launcher icon in ICS, and it's not removable - lots of folks have tried.
No idea, yet, about the battery icon.
You can modify the SystemUI.apk and replace the icons with different ones. I did it in Honeycomb because of Lenovo's super-white icons and I never had issues. You cannot remove the favorite's wheel icon, but you can replace it with an icon that is practically not visible on the status bar. I would have already replaced both icons, battery and favorite's wheel but without CWR or even adb access within recovery I'm a little scared to mess with my system with no backup.
So there you have it. It is possible with root, but without an option to restore if something goes wrong it is risky.
Great info, obscure. Hadn't heard this before.
The bottom of my N7 screen cracked but the device is still very usable. The bottom half inch will not respond to touch, but everything above that point works just fine! I'm hoping for a way to expand my navigation bar size, or bump it up to leave my screen blank under it.. Any help will be greatly appreciated and I have some $ in PayPal as a thanks. Any help as in a ROM that allows a Nav Bar Resize.. A way to move it to the top of my tablet screen... Some way I can put a google search bar under it or anything to waste that space. Thanks for ideas, hoping to save my N7 and keep it usable without having to rotate it everytime I need that portion of my screen!

I could have sworn I've seen navbar mods somewhere. You could always consider using PIE controls, however, if you want to remap them to the left/right screen edges.
Thanks for the quick reply. Pie Controls is a very useful work around for now. The app would be amazing if it let me choose exactly where on the screen I could pull up the navigation bar, but even without that option it is a great help!
I've seen some Mods but all of them seem to shrink the Bar, not enlarge it.
The reason I want to extend the stock navigation bar isn't just to be able to touch the buttons but it also pushes all opened apps, my home screen, etc up past that point that is cracked... So while playing a game or in my options menus I would still be able touch the bottom of my screen, just above the navigation bar (which I can't do now.) Basically, the top of the Bar is the bottom of my touch screen and it isn't high enough for me to use the entire screen =(

LMT Launcher is a pie control interface. It allows you to open from anywhere on the left or right and you can setup gestures as well with it to do the navbar functions. Look it up here on xda.

I can't believe a developer hasn't created this yet.
I love the desktop lock feature of adw launcher. But my 4 year old will still accidentally pull down the notification panel and change settings.
So there has to be a way to add an in-memory app that prevents the panel from being pulled down.
I still want to be able to see the status bar, but just not be able to pull down the panel.
I know it's possible because I have widgetlocker and it prevents it from the lock screen.
Please put your development skills to the test!
I am stock; not rooted; and have both ICS Droid 4g, and GB Incredible 2.
Try GMD Gesture Control. With a gesture or on an app-active basis you can hide the notification bar, which in this case prevents the drawer from being opened. You still get an auditory notification, and if you're near another gadget, there are ways to get notified via browser, a backup phone, tablet, and in not too long, TVs & watches, too.
So glad to *not* hear "you" sent your boss a "drunken" nonsense text! It was the coloring apps combined with the incomparable, phone-endangering frustration (not mine) that got me to spend the $5.
adw launcher can already hide the status bar, thus locking the notification panel. But I want an app that let's me see the status bar but locks the panel (just like widgetlocker lockscreen does).
Any dev out there that can make this for me?
I have used this launcher for years, and love it. It worked perfectly as always until the last update. It still works, but the lower icons (phone, contacts, app drawer, SMS, & Chrome) move up about and inch from the bottom of the screen. I drag them back to the bottom, but they just move right back up. On the launcher home screen, I've basically lost the lower inch of my display to add apps. My background is there perfectly, just can't move any icons (to stay) into the lower inch.
Any ideas (besides try another launcher)???

I had the same thing.. You'll notice a gap at the bottom on several launchers.
CPL has been the only one that works as expected that I'd use.
Luckily in 4.4 it gives you the ability to remove the bar you see under the keyboard, it's around this time I noticed the issue with the gap on launchers like lawn chair.
How come you're only on 2.2?
Update to 4.4.
Besides that I can't see a way around it.. you could perhaps change the padding to accommodate the gap if that option exists.
That's the gap on mine.
The bar is there by choice btw
