First impressions coming from Galaxy S7 - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

I've been using a Samsung Galaxy S7 for the past two years (since launch), and I had an opportunity to buy a 64 GB "panda" Pixel 2 XL on Craig's List really cheap. I've had it for a couple of days now. Here are my first impressions (coming a Galaxy S7):
- I really, really like it.
- I thought the 6" screen would be too big (compared to 5.1" for Galaxy S7), but having that screen real estate is very nice. Also, it's much more "pocketable" than I thought.
- I thought the fingerprint scanner on the back would bother me (one of the reasons I hadn't upgraded to the Galaxy S8 or S9 series), but it actually works really well. It's well positioned, super-fast, and reliable.
- Running the latest stock Android (8.1.0) is so refreshing! My AT&T Galaxy S7 recently received the Android 8.0 "Oreo" update, but it's heavily modified with Samsung Experience. I didn't hate that per se (although I was using Nova Launcher and tweaked things as much as I could), but it's so nice to just have "naked" Android, also without any of the bloatware I saw on my AT&T Galaxy S7. Plus you get the latest updates as soon as they're available. Sweet!
- Very good screen. You can really tell this is an OLED screen. Blows my wife's iPhone 8 out of the water in this area. (The Galaxy S7 also had a really good screen. OLED all the way, baby!)
- Awesome camera! This thing take exceptionally great pictures. That's a major selling point for me. I want my smartphone to have a great, great camera, and boy, does the Pixel 2 XL deliver in this are. The Galaxy S7 wasn't bad by any means, but this is really a big step (or two) forward.
- This thing is fast! The Galaxy S7 is no slouch, but the Pixel 2 XL just flies.
- I would have preferred the 128 GB version, since there's no micro SD card expansion, but I'm not complaining given how little I paid for this 64 GB version. I have my music on the phone, along with photos and some videos, and I still have 29 GB free, so maybe I shouldn't worry about space too much.
- I haven't tried to use my Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch with the Pixel 2 XL yet, but it will be interesting to see how that will work. Even if that doesn't work, I'm inclined to just get rid of my Gear S2, though. That's how much I like this Pixel 2 XL.
I'm still discovering new things, but it looks like this will be my new daily driver moving forward. This is really a great phone! I'll probably put my Galaxy S7 (possibly with Gear S2) on Craig's List soon, and easily recover the money I paid for the Pixel 2 XL.
I'm not sure I'll ever be able to go back to non-stock Android again. It will be interesting to see what the new Pixel 3 XL will bring.
Anyway, thought I'd share my first impressions as a newby to the Pixel line of smartphones.
Thanks for listening...

Also, the keyboard, particularly predictive typing, seems to work much better on the Pixel 2 XL than on the Galaxy S7.

Thanks! I can't believe I was able to pick this up on Craig's List for $250 (with Speck case!).

Welcome Aboard, and Enjoy...!
I'm here from S9+

My Samsung Gear S2 seems to work just fine with the Pixel 2 XL. Granted, though, I don't do anything fancy with it. I just use it for time-telling (of course!) and notifications.
--Ron

Also coming from s7 edge. Really worth every penny spend for Pixel 2 xl. Welcome

get rid of s7

I have owned like 20 deifferent devices(lg, moto, Samsung, Lenovo etc) and none compsres to the pixel 2 xl. I love the big oled display, amazing front facing speakers, phenominal camera, exceptional battery life, pure stock experience(rooting, mods) with monthly patches update and the sexy panda built, (people often ask me which phone I am using which never happened with other devices. It's a complete package in my opinion.
Have fun with the beast, people don't know what they are missing by not owning this thing.
Have fun with your pixel 2 xl, and you got one hell of a deal bro.

After taking the Pixel 2 XL on a weekend trip to the Olympic National Park, I continue to be incredibly impressed with this phone. I took some amazing-looking panoramas that were stitched together immaculately (see attached photos). The battery life is also really, really good, even with taking lots of photos. (Granted, with very few notifications over the weekend due to spotty cell reception.)
And that fingerprint scanner. I was always so against a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone, but the fingerprint scanner on this phone is positioned so well and it's so damn fast and accurate, I use it all the time.
This is a keeper for sure. I'm going to sell my Galaxy S7 and easily recoup what I paid for the Pixel 2 XL. Pretty sweet deal!
I do notice that the screen seems to attract dust and fingerprints a lot more easily than the Galaxy S7. Perhaps its oleophobic coating isn't as effective as on the Samsung Galaxy S series. Does anyone know if a kit like this one actually works?

Congrats and enjoy!
I am same and still celebrating what a great phone this is.
Coming from a S8 and got a too good to pass up deal on CL last week for a stomrtrooper. It look s brand new.
Yeah, I see a little blue shift when I tilt it...so what.
Happy to be in the club!
Oh, and congrats to OP for getting the best deal ever on a 2XL. I thought I got a good deal but not that good

Welcome aboard and enjoy your new Pixel XL 2 on XDA!

Welcome to the club my friend, I currently have the Pixel XL 2, P20 Pro, S9+ and the 5T.....
As an all round device I can honestly say the pixel still wins first place as my daily......:good:
The camera on the P20 Pro is really great and trumps In a few area's over the pixel (low light) but overall I still much prefer the shots taken on the pixel ..:good:
Again enjoy ....and good choice.....

I came from s7 edge, but I'm not so happy like others. Yes, pixel is faster, but not have a lot good features
1. Samsung's dialer is more comfortable, it's has "vibrate on connected
2. Samsung's calendar with widget is nicer and better to use
3. Samsung gallery is better (you don't need every time to switch to pictures folder)
4. Better AOD with automatic night off mode, calendar and battery %
5. Chrome changed to Samsung browser
6. Build quality like was with nexus 4 still now it's isn't super. Samsung's s line (from s6) build quality for me is better.
7. This stupid"tap tap" sound when press screen....
8. blue effect exists, and Samsung screen (colors) are better
So, two + for pixel, it's faster and newest, but like Google wrote "we finished with cheap phones (nexus) and start new top line (pixel), for me they only raised price, but not quality. I like finger print speed, but I don't like location. And i love flat screen.

1. The dialer on the Pixel 2 XL is one of my favorite things about the software.
2. Don't use calendar much so no comment.
3. Google Photos is good and allows you to view pictures you have saved in the cloud. Not sure what switching you are talking about.
4. I don't use AOD on the Pixel 2 XL but I think it does calendar. Android P will be adding battery %. Not sure what the other thing is "automatic night off mode".
5. I'm not sure how anyone can stand the Samsung browser. It's slow and hogs battery compared to Chrome. I also don't like the 2 separate tool bars. URL bar and settings access on top and back, forward, home, bookmarks and tabs on bottom.
6. Build quality of the Pixel 2 XL is excellent. Way better than a phone like the Nexus 4 and Galaxy S7 that have glass backs. A phone with a glass back is the opposite of good build quality.
7. The "tap, tap" sound when you press the screen? Maybe something wrong with the Pixel 2 XL you used. Mine doesn't make and "tap tap" sound.
8. By "blue effect" I'm guessing you mean the blue tint? Yes, it does exist but it's very slight and requires extreme viewing angles to see. I never notice it. I've noticed similar effects on Samsung phone. The Galaxy S8 has it too but instead of blue it's red. I don't remember if the S7 had that but it's not uncommon for OLEDs to have some color shift at extreme angles, the iPhone X does it too. The Samsung "Basic" color profile is about the same as the Pixel 2 XL's "Boosted" profile. Both are pretty damn close to sRGB. The default color profile on Samsung phones ("Adaptive" is what I think they call it) is AWFUL. It's WAY oversatured and makes everything look like a cartoon. Something like a picture of a stop sign looks like a neon sign.

1. Samsung dialer, swipe to right - dial, swipe to left - sms. Vibrate on connected is good thing.
3. Yes, good thing what you can sync online with pc, you don't need, but I talking about folders. When you open google photos on phone, always open lastest photos, but not folders (like camera folder, viber folder and etc) and you can change it. And one more thing, you can't draw on photo.
4. P maybe, I am on Oreo.
5. I don't see difference in battery life or browsing speed between s browser and chrome. But s browser has good add blockers, chrome ads bloker is joke, but not blocker. And I like "back to top" button on s browser.
6. Who cares about glass back if a lot of people use case?
7. Use search, every pixel 2 xl has it.
8. I don't had any color issues with samsung. Yes, it isn't big problem like many peoples talk, but it is. If you take phone into hands or put on table with screen on, you will see blue tint.

250$ is a steal deal. I bought mine for 650$ in my country and mostly nobody knows about the Pixel, untl i told them it was made by google. I aso came from s7 flat, and I've been considered between Pixel 2 XL and mate 10 pro, xiaomi mix 2s, but i know eventually I'll come back to the pxl. It has been in my mind for too long, and no othe phones can take its place. And i didn't regret at all.
Stunning camera with superb photo quality. Now everybody always asks for my phone whenever we hang out and take photos. FeelsGoodMan.
Cheers.

This is why I am returning my HTC U11

HI guys.
Just wanted to share some of my frustrations with this device. Please note that I am compering it to my old galaxy s8 and it is only a matter of personal opinion. Please let me know if you experienced any of these issues.
1. Strange auto brightness incidents. When I open the phone or move to different apps (such as camera, google photos gallery or chrome) the brightness changes. I was really surprised since I don't have an option for auto brightness.
2. AT&T reception issues. Calls are connected really slow and I get spotty coverage (in Chicago). It is worse then the galaxy s8.
3. Boom sound is not booming at all. The galaxy s8 has a very similar volume but looks like they tweaked it for higher highs so it sounds crisper. The upper speaker on the U11 is really not necessary and effects the overall quality of the sound . If I have a stereo speaker, why one side have to be worse?
4. I cannot do it without the headphone jack. I tried to walk around with the converter and I agree it gives amazing sound but I just can't do it.
5. Cumbersome system menus that are different from the stock android we all got to love. Its so hard to find the NFC and there is no shortcut for it.
6. call speaker clarity= its not clear.
7. The squeezing does not work for me. I set it up for medium strength (which was hard since its its not calibrated for medium power) and the phone kept on turning my camera in my pocket. So dies that mean I cannot wear skinny jeans anymore?
8. Tap to wake is not consistent, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
9. Also I noticed a strange behavior with the home button (I don't use fingerprint): sometimes I can tap it to wake the phone, sometimes I need to tap it twice and sometimes I cannot unlock the phone by tapping on it. When the phone is awake the home button works perfectly.
10. Bluetooth connectivity lost at random times in my car.
11. I got a strange "do not disturb" toggle (on and off) when I make a call.
12. The camera is not noticeably better the the galaxy s8. The shutter speed is the same, the light exposure is the same. Not sure it is worth the upgrade. In addition the edge sense works really bad here since squeezing the sides of the phone to take a pic creates a tremor because of the awkward way you need to hold the phone up.
Selfie camera is sub par.
13. The galaxy s8 has a better sun visibility since its brightness can be cranked up even higher. I tested it side by side. WTF HTC, you have an lcd panel.
14. The size.... OMG the size. I know that HTC made a great looking phone but one you go infinity edge, impossible to go back.
15. Red glow. Comparing the galaxy to the U, it is notably reddish, even after making the screen "cooler" in the options it is still red looking to me.
16. HTC phone migrate tool is not working on the Galaxy and it crashes (not a big deal but its annoying).
17. Earphones drain battery (wtf?!?).
18. HTC horrible call center.
19. Muffled car Bluetooth sound quality . More then one call sounds fed horrible comparing g to the s8.
***PHONE RETURNED ***
Overall I prefer the S8 but was chucking you call it "old": still fairly new IMHO! ?
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Ok............
Old s8? The thing didn't drop a dollar yet
As for the rest this is typical feedback for anyone coming from s8, just like few reviews, some of comments hold true like s8 sun brightness due to over drive (I dare to use it like that extensively)
But other like the boom and audio is completely non sense
Remaining few bugs here and there which are being addressed in the imminent update
Speed, response and fluidity however completely slaughters your s8
As for camera, unless you zoom and crop you will not appreciate this mobile camera bomb
Red glow as opposed to pink tint on the s8? Extended display color options are coming in the imminent update
Size and ergonomics I fully agree there, however some tips which has massively improved my experience, Nova launcher for swipe up and didn't action, simple controls to add quick access to have buttons, I now rarely touch the back button, a slim or the inbox case is recommended to save ergonomics, or naked if you have the heart for it...naked it this is the most comfortable phablet you can find, let's remember that its a phablet after all, same size as pixel XL, ah yes let's remember kids the s8 is not really bigger screen than this phablet not even close
Peace, go back to your tiny s8
The boom sound is not that great. The Galaxy sound as crisp. Plus the two mods it provides is another headache. Theater mode is muffled and music mode is just not good.
BTW . The Galaxy S8 is my wife's , I will get the plus .
Yes, the Galaxy S8 has a smaller screen only if you watch videos all day
The sound quality is exactly the same! And the camera is not a lot greater. BTW, I can notice the different approaches this manufacturers took .
On zoom the u11 is sharper but pixelated . The Galaxy is less sharp but smoother .
3.5 Jack and and a higher screen ratio would have make this phone perfect . Too bed it's far from it.
I bought this phone becuase it wasn't an S8
As someone who has owned a number of devices I wanted some things that people call "old" such as the home button back. I could get by without it on my Z3 compact but there were apps that blew up so bad I had no choice than to restart the phone because the software home button wouldn't show up, but after holding down the power button the restart option would show up and respond.
I have seen the S8 and as someone that owned the S2-4 I really didn't like it. The S5 is the last Samsung phone that I really liked. Though I went with the Z3 compact because it was smaller and cheaper.
I agree that the lack of a headphone jack is disappointing but on nearly every other point listed I disagree. My screen has nearly zero tint to it, my Z3 compact and Samsung's had strong blue tints to them. My Moto phone had a greenish tint to it.
The speed of the S8 is frankly so shameful it isn't even funny. I bought the Galaxy S phones back when they had speed. Now with all of the junk useless crap on the S8 it seems like a $300 phone not 700-800.
Also any phone that isn't 16:9 needs to be thrown into the trash. Don't like it or care for it and want the trend to drop dead ASAP. Though if we could get a flagship device with a removable battery I guess then I would suck it up and deal with an odd ball screen.
This phone's reception on AT&T is really good as the voice quality couldn't get much better to me.
I almost bought a Sony XZ premium, but wanted to try a HTC phone and save some money so here I am. Overall the Sony XZ premium is likely the best flagship device out now but I wanted to pay a bit less and get the home button back so that's why HTC got my money this time.
I didn't think the phone was that great either, but most of your points are bull****.
1. You can turn auto brightness off
2. These reception issues probably has nothing to do with HTC, it is completely compatible with AT&T
3. boom sound is still better than most phones lol
4. if you can't do without the headphone jack, why did you buy this phone in the first place?
5. i'll give you that one
7. lol
The rest are pretty unfortunate for you to have, I kinda agree with you on 15 though. The screen was warmer compared to my other phones
1. My phone doesn't do that. It only changes brightness in camera or when there more light hitting the sensor
3. Boomsound is kind of weird. Doesn't work too well in landscape since it's unbalanced. Treble can be boosted a bit of you install Viper4Android. I don't think the snapdragon S8 has root to install sound mods.
4. I use Bluetooth, so this isn't a problem for me.
5. Isn't this exactly like stock Android? It's under more where it's always been. You can also search it.
7. I have the issue where edge sense didn't always activate when I squeezed the phone.
8. Don't know about this one, always use fingerprint.
10. Bluetooth connection to car is broken for me too. I think it's due to bugs in 7.1.1
11. That's weird
12. only squeeze with one hand, easier to take pic.
13. Wish it could do iPhone levels too but not dissatisfied
What i really love about this phone is how smooth it is. Night and day coming from my S7 edge. Using Google maps, browsing while downloading anything, experience is so much better.
+ We have an unlocked bootloader and can root
i have the s8 right here on my table didnt turn it on for two weeeks, the whole S8 sounds just as good argument is just absurd, its terrible, super low volume and dont make me start on the joke that is audio recording and voice messages, even when using the speakerphone i have to raise the phone to my ear
you would have won a decent objective argument if it wasnt for that absurd audio comment
s8 audio is good only in certain tones, ideal for certain ringtones that is i guess this is what you call crisp, you want to see how bad the audio is on your s8? just revert back to the stock song ringtone....just laughable

this! why people walk passed this as if its not important, the S8 speed is hilarious, in gaming its a mid range and its even much slower and hotter in the worldwide exynos version
you want to pay 800$ for a phone operating like an iPhone 5 in terms of speed, fluidity and response be my guest, just leave us out of it
Galaxy S8 lovers (lets admit we all love it) it should be in your favor to bash Samsung for the incredible bad performance and lying reviews in order for them to fix this in the future and HTC deserves to awarded for doing this beast of a phone
Samsung Note 4 user here. Can't defend the S8 or Samsung of late since they bent the screen and locked all snapdragon bootloaders and blamed it on Google and Qualcomm. Fragile hot mess there! No thanks.
I'm remotely considering this phone but keeping options open.
I'm inclined to agree that updates may smooth some OP complaints but the first thing I would try is take phone out of battery saver mode and give performance a good try. That may be causing the inconsistency with brightness, cell signal and edge squeeze?
There are other battery saving methods to try. I never trust factory battery saving modes. That especially applies to Samsung. Please stop trying to optimize my phone; you're inducing lag and really need to learn how to manage RAM, Samsung. Try again just doesn't seem to be working for you.
Ultimately, Android and third party apps may do a better job. But HTC Boost+ is an app I use on my Note 4. LOL; I know that's an HTC app with ad sponsorship. Maybe HTC users get a free ride regarding the ads?

Boomsound is crap? And your S8 sounds better? Really?
And from when did Samsung phones had stock android experience?
This writing of yours is more suitable in the S8 section. It would make many happy though it mostly doesn't make sense.

Boomsound is crap? S8 sounds the same ?
Holy ****balls he just went full retard.

I guess he never had a U11 in his hands, because (almost) every point is just nonsense.
And some people are so much addicted to Samsung that they just can't see the advantages in other devices.
I myself am addicted to HTC: Legend, Desire, One S, M7, M8, 10, U11.
There is one Samsung device i had a longer time and that was the Galaxy S2. Later i tried the S6 and S7, but both phones were greatly disappointing my expectations. All the UI and ROM just didn't feel like a flagship. Slow and unstable. I even experienced reboots with S7 when opening MAPS. Sound crappy, internal AND external. And so on. Only good thing was the camera and Amoled.
So if you really think your Samsung is better, then go with it and try to be happy.
HTC's systems menu is very close to stock. Samsung has the a** backwards system menu. Get out of here you skinny jean wearing troll.

No I don't . But I don't have anything else.
If the U11 had a 3.5 jack I would have kept it. Yesterday I wanted to play music at my friends back yard, so he handed me a 3.5 mm cable; you should have seen his face when he realized I have no way of connecting it (he is an owner of an iphone 5s).
On the other hand if the galaxy 8 had no "edges" and has a normal resolution it will be the perfect phone right now.
Maybe the note 8 could be a better choice for me or the Oneplus 5. Money is not an issue, I am willing to spend 600-850 on a new phone but it has to be used properly and not just look great.
Besides, the U11 has a serious issue with lighting.
Samsung fans try so hard to hate HTC, they would be very disappointed if they couldn't find anything wrong. It's so bad that I have even been seeing Sammy fans buying this device, (or pretending to) just so they can show proof why this phone sucks Lol. Then they threaten to return it  It is killing them that this great phone just might be better than their Holy Samsung :crying: LMAO!

If you want a 3.5 headphone jack then get the Sony XZ premium because you can pick one up for under $800 USD though clove UK. It's better than the S8 in every way other than maybe the camera.
@borisb and why did you ignore the included 3.5 adapter?
anyway i dont see a point of a thread like "why i am returning" these threads are always controversial
besides no one asked you

Moving from iphone(6) to android - very confused please help!

Hi guys!
Like I mentioned in the title, I want to move from IOS to Android but I am very confusing, I dont know what to choose:
Galaxy s8? HTC U11(only 4 GB?!? It have a huge different between 6 and 4?) Oneplus 5(with the 8 GB)?
I want a phone with a very good camera(very important!!), build quality and fast phone without lags is very importantly me..!
Thanks!!

I would stay away from OP5 worst phone they have brought out and overpriced, U11 very nice but still not up to par with Samsung in my opinion. S8 is beautifully designed runs smooth and has the best camera of the lot. Keep in mind I tried the OP5 and Xperia XZP before my move to S8 :good:

Your iPhone 6 had 1 GB of RAM and having 4 GB on a new phone is a concern for you? RAM difference isn't enough to pick one phone over the other. It is the user experience that plays a great role. So here is my take on this:
1) If you want no lag, fluidity, clean user experience, nice camera - pick HTC U11. Has SD Card slot. U11 is the better overall choice (IMO)
2) OnePlus 5 is also a fast phone, should have no lag as well. So 6/8GB, won't matter, but there is no SD Card slot for memory expansion. Keep that in mind.
3) Galaxy s8 may look better, more futuristic and just easier to hold and type on it with one hand. It was important to me that the phone would be narrow enough. Has SD Card slot.
Thank you for your feedback guys..
My worries are:
In the OP5: the camera reviews are not good! The camera is (at least from the YouTube reviews) is very bad and this is one of the important things to me.
About HTC: It can hold more then a year? If so the HTC is very strong fighter .
About s8: from the YouTube reviews the phone after a month or two have lags often( I think it is something that is whell known in Samsung's phones.
And the screen ( that is look amazing!!) is very scaring me because of his delicacy, and the red colors on the screen.
User experience is very very important to me, lack of lags and good camera, it will be grate if there guys here with one of those phones(after the buzz, over a month or two) that can tell how the phone after a while.
Thanks!

had the phone since day one (24 april i think), and yes, it wont be as fast as the htc or oneplus, but it will smoke your iphone 6 so if you are use to that, this phone will impress you with speed and smoothness (coming from a previous oneplus 3 owner), camera is the best, maybe lg g6 rivals it because of that amazing wide angle lens, but besides that its the best in the market, the desing is the best in my opinion cant really judge that tho. but if you buy the s8, be careful, because the screen is very fragile(broke mine in 5 days from a 0.5m drop on the floor)
What about the pinky screen?

You have the pinky screen issue?
" but if you buy the s8, be careful, because the screen is very fragile(broke mine in 5 days from a 0.5m drop on the floor"
You had any screen/back protector? If not which screen protector and back will be good?
In addition, the curvy screen is nice? Or annoying? The "edge" style.
Get the Google Pixel. It has one of the highest rated cameras in a smartphone DxOMark, bloat free software for a smooth user experience, and updates come straight from Google, so you aren't waiting months for Samsung/LG/HTC so push out the latest android updates. if you can wait a few months, the Pixel 2 should be coming out around October.

I believe HTC U11 is the best overall choice for what you are looking for. Their UI is fluid, the software optimized much better, the battery life is good, camera is good - the list goes on. I had U11 and if it would be as narrow as S8, I would have kept it.
Where did you bought the u11?
I saw that the 6 GRAM is available almost only in Asia, the 4 GRAM is enough?
About the google pixel, it is 2016 phone that coast like 2017 phone?
Thanks

I bought HTC U11 on htc.com and 4 GB is enough + you are not going to be using the same phone for over 2-3 years anyway.
Unless you plan to root your phone (not sure if correct term) I do not suggest Galaxy S8/S8+ because of the "always on home button" (even on lock-screen). Major issue with an ocean of requests to disable it. It basically turns your screen on and opens a bunch of apps in your pocket, although the only issue I have is when taking the phone out of my pocket. If you plan on getting a flip-cover, that won't be an issue. I would myself, but for me it's important to just slide my phone into it's holder in my car.
I have my iPhone for almost 2.5 years
Anyway, I like how the s8 look and feel but the lags that he have are very annoying (I saw him today morning in Samsung's shop.
I didn't saw the HTC or oneplus but I think I will order the HTC
Actually, I switch phones every 2-2.5 years plus.
Anyway I think I will take the HUC, I saw to many issues with the S8, I wish the oneplus 5 have better camera.
If you're iPhone user I would suggest going for S8.
All others got almost stock android which may by is 'fluid' but looking soooo 'ugly' and missing a lot of extra settings which are on S8 platform- touchwiz. Camera- very comparable apart s8 got F1.7 what makes it winner for me. You can install Nova launcher to make it buttery smooth- better than my previous IP6 plus. Samsung did very nice job, sms messenger, email, dialer, settings look so elegant and smart.

I would stay away of android if I could. Try to borrow S8 and play for some time. You can deeply regret your decision once.
Most of the S8 bought by IOS users fooled by ads end on the ebay or gumtree.
BTW: I'm S8 user. since April..
And you regret your decision?

People always complain this it the attitude of our century hihi but s8 is really nice phone. I had few tries with Android and I can say S7edge and S8 are winners. All 5.5inch Iphones lags as well but with Android you are not a slave of the operating system. You can change launcher, widget, setup default app, clean cache. Did you know there is a bug with Spotify cache on ios? Cache getting massive and to fix it you have te reinstall app instead of just hit clear data from settings. 2017 and Spotify can not sort it out because Apple is locking access to the specific folders. Lag? Within the phone setup there is a lag but now while daily use it almost gone. BTW this was the most annoying thing bothering me as well. You will love this phone.
not really

It was the best I could buy with Android onboard. However looking forward to see the new Pixel.
Phone with S8's screen and size, running stock Google Android (no bloatware, including also Facebook and Twitter), with no annoying Bixby button and fingerprint placed in less idiotic position, could be the winner for me, even better than iPhone.
Was trying to switch back to IOS just before buying S8, but couldn't move one finance application and its data. This is the reason I'm forced to use android.
To summarize: I'm happy with S8, it's not a perfect, but still regret decision to switch to Android couple years ago.
OK, sound bummer, tell you the trough, the fingerprint button it is a manner of time, but the issue for me is camera and no lagging phone, this is why I so confusing between the S8 and the HTC, my wife have the lg G5 and I hate his OS it is pretty bad so this is why I didn't think about the G6

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Google Pixel 3 XL, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Google Pixel 3 XL is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Well it is a Google Pixel so of course there is gonna be some love ?
Sent from my HUAWEI STF-L09 using XDA Labs
I've owned the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 6P, both of which were great devices. What's so special about the 3XL? There's nothing in it that isn't found in phones that are way cheaper. For those of you shouting about vanilla android, there is no vanilla android any more. Even Google now includes features that aren't found in any other version of android. But the thing that annoys me the most about pixel phones is Google's price policy. Why oh why are these phones 30% more expensive in Europe?
i just watched unbox therapy's video of the pixel 3 xl. to be honest i like it. yes the notch is bigger than others but it doesnt seem to bother me. maybe i'm too used to it from my iphone x. i wish the area on the sides of the notch would hold more information, but that is where xda comes in. i'm sure some developers can put more info there with their roms. the camera looks amazing. the screen quality finally looks up to par with samsung even though it's still an LG screen. you can tell they have matured their oled screens fast. the build quality looks really good. that soft gorilla glass on the back that doesnt attract finger prints looks like a nice touch. i'm going to objectively give this device a try instead of blindly following the masses of haters. but based of the videos i've watched already i think this device will end up being a great one.
Why do people keep asking why we pay more for phones in Europe? In Europe we pay VAT which adds about 20% to the cost of just about everything. It may not account for all the price difference but it accounts for the majority of it.
Overall Phones are good with price range. Nothing to hate about it. Phone has lot more than other phones with that price range. I had good experience with Pixel 2 XL. Phones are worthy to buy.
People hate about notch trend but I say its only way to cover screen on front. About some trends you will used to it. its not making problem in functionality.
I have Pixel 2 XL why I should by Pixel 3 XL ?
Plus about this phones is Snapdragon 845 , Titan M security module and Wireless Charging in Hardware. + ( Notch some people not like it )
about notch google will provide option to disable notch like one plus 6.
Pixel Cameras are always awesome then others with that price.
I believe Pixel users are 95% genuine users who uses almost every feature that company provide.
Not like iPhone users wasting lots of parent's money to show off just a logo.
Apple call their eco system it is like handcuffs to buy their won stuff and 30% features not work if you don't have other apple products.
[ Pixels = You will get maximum benefit of Artificial Intelligence. This is what I mean. ]
Got my 3 XL yesterday. I'm coming from a 2 XL so I expected a slight upgrade, but I'm finding a lot of things I love that I didn't expect.
- Tap to wake is WAY faster than on the 2. Having both side by side, the 3 wakes up a full second before the 2.
- The screen on the 3 looks sooo good. Crisper even. I never had any complaints about my 2 XL's screen, but I can tell the 3 XL is definitely better
- Speakers are noticeably better. Not sure about how loud they get, but the sound is richer on the 3 than the 2. The 2 is tinnier.
- Wide Angle Selfie camera is pretty cool
- Low light photos are noticeably better. This I didn't expect to notice as much, but a side by side comparison of the same photo with the two phones shows a noticeable improvement. The 2's photo looks duller than the 3. They might look the same after some post processing, but the 3's photo looks great without any touchups.
- Not phone related, but the Google Fabric case covers more of the bottom of the phone than the 2's did.
The only thing I have NOT liked is that with the notch, the number of notification icons in the status bar has been reduced to three, meaning 2 and a dot if you have more. If I reduce the display size to the lowest one, I can get three and a dot. The 2 XL has 4 and a dot. Hopefully we can figure out a way to turn off the clock. I never use it and I'd gladly give it up in exchange for more icons.
After I got the phone I realize it is so much better than expected. And the software polish and hard ware polish is next level
Very nice but some complaints
Just got my Pixel 3 XL last night and was impressed with the look and feel. I'm coming from the original Pixel XL. No notch complaints here. I was happy with everything until I got in my car. I have a Jeep JL with Android Auto. I was expecting the two to come together as expected but nothing happened. Spent time changing usb cables. I see power on the Pixel but no love from Android Auto. I'm hoping I just need to go to the dealership for a firmware upgrade or something but its disappointing that it just didn't work.
The only other thing I don't like is the double swipe up to get to the app drawer. Not sure how I feel about it.
With that said my complaints are minor. SOOOO many cool features that like.

My 2017 CRV also had trouble the first time I tried to use Android Auto. No map showed up, it gave me an ETA and the first turn arrow, but the only thing that updated was the ETA which was WAY off. When I got to my destination, I restarted the phone and the car, and on my way home, it worked as it normally does.
Happy out here. Got my 3xl 128gb on Verizon pre paid yesterday. Using on SIM in Ireland. Love pretty much everything about the phone. Kinda wish it had face unlocking but otherwise very happy. Everything just works and no bloat.
OK, so this may be biased, but I'm 100% in love with this phone. This is my first pixel phone, and I'm coming from a mid/budget phone, so that may make all the difference, but from the looks, the feels, the screen, the new gestures, the smoothness, the speakers, the call quality, the battery life, to whatever else this phone is, and can do, I love it. I've never had such a great experience from day one on any other phone, and I've been on Android since I got a Nexus One on day one. To me this phone is perfect. There is not one thing I can think of to complain about (OK I do have one. Have the phone either a bit thicker, or find another way to make the camera bump on the back flush).
Coming from a Oneplus 3T here. I am going through an RMA right now for the speaker issue, just to put that out there. With that aside, I love the phone otherwise. My only concern going in was the battery to be honest. The battery was larger than my 3T but still smaller than last year. It is a great phone. A great improvement over my 3T, which was still one of the best phones I've had.
Love the phone. Totally seamless Google experience
Overall impression so far.
Got the phone on Friday, October 19, 2018.
1. Good build quality (better than 2 XL); feels rigid & premium in hand. The frosted glass back is really smooth & good to touch. Better that my ex's skin.
2. Battery life is pretty good too. Same or better than 2 XL. First cycle (WiFi only): from 96%; SOT: 5 hr 10 min in 1 day 10 hrs with 16% to go. It will ofc get better with more cycles & as it learns more. Also, the battery is smaller than that of 2 XL & powers a bigger & better screen & louder speakers.
3. Cameras. Need not say anything.
4. Screen: it is a Samsung panel on the 3 XL, performs like one. Really good. No black clipping for me except maybe on mobile data when speeds are low. That is more like a buffering and pixel issue but no black clipping. Could happen on any phone.
5. I really like the included USB-C Pixel buds; took me 10 minutes to get the right fit & learn to use them (fit them); follow the animations in the first time setup. They are really good. Good bass too.
6. Charging time using charger included in box: from 16% to 100%: around 1 hour 40 minutes. WiFi on. AOD on.
7. Notch: got used to it already & not noticeable anymore. I don't play games on the phone at all.
8. The speakers: a minor issue of imbalanced audio(bottom grill is louder) but no buzzing for me & no muffled sound either. Fixable via software update.
9. RAM management: it is bad rn; fixable by software update as the cause has already looks to be the kernel `lowmemoryKiller` as per some sources when you google.
I see 0 hardware based issues with the phone (apart from notch which is bad design & not an issue for me at least). Other issues will be addressed via an update. I see better performance in the future already. Even the pixel 2 xl got better with updates (at least for me).
Buying the Pixel stand soon.
TL;DR: Love it. Keeping it.
Like the phone...my only issues are with the display brightness and sometimes ram management. My conspiracy is that google dimmed the screen in order to avoid a crappy battery. 100% on this is like 65% on my iphone. Other than that, I love the speakers! Not sure if it's worth the $900
Love it but highly intrigued by the 6T coming next week
I remember when in the Nexus days, everyone said that all vanilla Android needed was a great camera and it'd be perfect. Google listened and produced pixel line with best camera, 3 generations in a row now. Now all anyone can do is nitpick the hardware. I think Google has achieved what most enthusiasts were after.
overall i like it, price should drop $300+ - Pixel 3 XL crosshatch 128 black G013C
What: Google Pixel 3 XL crosshatch 128 black G013C
good/great:
camera
camera software
free storage of pictures and video
nice to have included earbuds
screen is decent and not overwarm like apple's off white warm screen tones. proper whitebalance, maybe slightly blue, but a very good screen.
fast - fast booting, fast behavior
not so good / annoying:
4 gb ram @ $1000 price point?
128 vs 256/512 ssd at $1000 price point?
no sd card slot - give it a rest google.
included earbuds done noise cancel. why in the world would they do that?
i cant see where 300-400 dollars went for a phone that costs $1000 + $129 in preferred care
insultingly overpriced wireless earbuds
insultingly overpriced wireless dock
insultingly overpriced accessories in general by screwgle.
drm on Qi / fake Qi charging - 10 watts in the drm mode isnt even enough let alone be enough in the drm-allowed mode. 5W is just pathetic.
included wired charger isnt as good as previous pixel chargers. should include the big dual port charger from the pixel c
ifixit score is terrible (4 of 10). right to repair legislation is going to be needed - an industry wide problem - sad to see in a $1000 phone
audio jack missing - why do this?
faceunlock - i do have an iphone X from work (they gave it for free) - i do enjoy that feature.
bad:
- notch is just stupid. its stupid on the X, XS and on 3XL. stop the god damned notches. i just shut the notch off in developer options so its just a waste of pixels but its just poor design.
- pie having that idiotic gesture system and its forced (no developer or hidden option to go back). just copy the iphone's gesture system and be done with this moronic one
overall im happy because $1000 for me isnt breaking the bank but there are plenty of people where $1000 is a bit on the high side and this phone just doesnt deliver that value. its a nice phone and im happy with it - best android has to offer and camera is the most important feature - but google is a jerk, sundar pichai is a greedy jerk and a bad CEO. when i think of sundar pichai i think of a jerk who is also a spineless milquetoast. when i think of Steve Jobs i think of a jerk who was obsessed with aesthetics, beauty, ease of use, wanting to be best of breed, form and function, etc. google needs a better CEO. sundar pichai is a greedy jerk who needs to work at this harder than he does or let someone good take his place

Hey Im coming from the OG pixel xl as well. I currently have the 6t but don't actually find it much of an upgrade from my pixel. Ive got 15 days to return it so Im looking to buy the 3xl instead. Would you say that the upgrade from the OG xl to the 3xl is worth it?? Thanks!

Anyone coming from 6T?

I would swap my 6t with an s10+ when the price will fall (perhaps with note 10 unveiling).
Though I am curious to see if someone went from the 6t to s10+, if he or she regrets or is happy by doing it.
Also is the camera much better? The 2x optical zoom are good?

Im happy with the decision!
Even tho, the Oxygen os is smother than the One UI but there are many different launchers for you to choose!,
Well, I switched from OP6 not T... Main issue with S10+ that I have is that the action bar (or whatever that thing at the top is) and the notification pull down menu thing seems so blown out of scale compared to OP6... I mean it is huge. I really wish there would be another option for making text and icons even smaller one step.
Another thing I noticed is that OP6 had better white colour of the display (S10+ seems a bit yellowish). At least to my taste... display adjustment sliders actually do something compared to S10+ (I imagine that is the same for any Samsung FW).
Another thing is screen real-estate. They are about so so, especially because of that stupid selfie cam positioned so far away from the top edge on S10+ which takes the advantage of screen to body ratio away from S10+ as it makes action bar really thick... I mean really thick. If you open youtube app you will see this humongous gray bar at the top which to me is very ugly. I get it they had to make something unique to Samsung design so that they actually get told apart from other brands. But still.. damn they could have just placed the cams in the top right corner and call it a day.
Navigation gestures instead of navigation bar are also more intuitive to use on OP, especially one handed since you have to reach the far corner to swipe up and open recent apps pm S10+ while on OP just just drag further up from the middle.
USB C port is better on my S10+ compared to OP6 though.... OP6 you can wiggle plugged in cable in it which drives me crazy. Curved screen is also annoying because you will be palm pressing stuff you didn't want to every time you will reach on the other side one handed. I have a case that is quite deep to fix that.
I can't say yet on the battery.
Signal wise they are so so, with OP6 having a slightly better WiFi reception. I'm talking like one side of the bead vs both sides of the bead.
On the other hand having all those optional samsung apps like music, calendar, on S10 is a real plus. I really did not like the way OP didn't include their own. App wise Samsung has nice little features OP doesn't like when a contact that you saved with company name as well calls you, that is displayed.
Oh and Samsung is whoring for icon pack and themes microtransactions, they won't let you do it anyway other than through their theme app. Quite annoying. Yeah you get custom launchers... But stock is good enough for me, I can't be bothered to get something custom and then fine tune it additionally. Also, hardware buttons are so badly placed it hurts my feelings.
I would say... skip S10+ and wait for S11+ or something that will have 5G as well. IMO it is not worth it. Hopefully they wizen up regarding selfie cam on next gen as well. I imagine their CPU will be more mature at that point as well.
Unless you get the thing for a bargain (that is why I have it) and turn a profit after the switch.
Why not swap for next months OnePlus 7 or 7 pro?
Went from 6T to S10+ last week and I'm happy with the phone. You absolutely need to wait until you get the biometric update though because before that, wow, the fingerprint scanner is garbage.
What I like : Screen cutout is fine and the display is beautiful, fast wireless charging is far more convenient than I imagined, One UI is good but not as snappy as the 6T, headphone jack is also really nice to have and I was concerned about the curved display but it's not nearly as bad as the Note 9 that I had for a few weeks. It's still easy to accidentally "palm touch" the screen but it's manageable. Bixby button, well, I remapped it to camera for now and I'll use that 3rd party app to change it to the assistant so it's okay but no button would be better.
What I miss : Hardware selector for ring/vibrate/mute, having the status bar icons all the way to the right, not closer to the middle, and as someone else mentioned, notifications seem way too big on One UI. It's a huge 6.4 inch display for 4 notifications and you are running out of screen space. I have a feeling Android Q will make notifications even better.
Better wait for OP7 unveiling then, if OP finally chooses a good camera setup then I will stay in OP territory.
What about custom roms? Is it a pain like on 6t because of encryption and dual slots?
I have both the unlocked OnePlus 6t and the T-Mobile version. I bought the S10 Plus knowing I would not be able to root it and thought I was going to hate it. Well both of my 6t's are sitting on my desk unused since I bought the S10 Plus.
The S10 Plus has so many options I have not missed root once (or some of the headaches that come with it...Google Pay not working because Google updates something that breaks Magisk hide). This is coming from someone who has rooted every phone I've had since the OG Droid. With the S10 Plus you can use themes (I just use dark mode) ad block system wide with Adhell3, hide notification bar icons and so much more.
Camera on the S10 Plus is so much better than the OnePlus 6t. Before I bought my first OnePlus 6t I had the Pixel 3 XL and I would switch between the two because of the camera. I ended up selling the Pixel 3 XL because of the battery life.
The hole punch did bug me at first with the icons being pushed towards the center but after a few days I didn't notice it anymore.
The gestures on the OnePlus 6t are hands down the best on any Android phone but with a guide on her I switched the stock S10 Plus gestures for ones that are pretty close to the OnePlus 6t.
Battery on the S10 Plus I'm getting between 9 to 12 hours of screen on time, which is better than the OnePlus 6t.
If someone asked me to trade a S10 Plus for my OnePlus 6t before I used the S10 Plus I would have laughed at them. Now if I was asked I wouldn't think twice.
I do miss the physical silent slider from the OnePlus 6t but I honestly think that's all I miss.
Don't get me wrong, I love the OnePlus 6t and will be buying the 7 or 7t, but the S10 Plus is just a hands down better phone.
I had the 8/256g version of the 6T. TBH I really loved the stock android experience vs the S10+ samsung One UI. A side note, I bought the Hong Kong version of the S10+ with the SD855 (I didnt want the Exynos version sold where I live in Australia)
For me, here are the Pos + and Negs -
S10+
=Equal battery life (6hrs SOT on both)
+Better screen
+Better camera (way better!)
+Headphone Jack
+Waterproofing
+Ultra Fast
+Build quality
+dual sim (or Sim + SD card)
-updates still need to come faster
+speaker quality is excellent
OnePlus 6T
=Equal battery life (6hrs SOT on both)
-No waterproofing (splash proof only)
-No memory expansion
-Camera (good quality, but dont do panoramic photos)
=QHD screen (its awesome quality though and great for gaming - no touch lag)
+One of the fastest SD845 phones
+dual SIM
-No Headphone Jack
+Excellent cases (The Karbon bumper by Evutec is awesome!)
+fast Android updates (faster than almost Google)
I was going to wait for the OP7, but the pop up camera errked me a lot. I'm really glad I went S10+. It was definitely an upwards step, not sideways - but in saying that, the 6T is very much a complete phone (except for the panaromic photos)
Btw is the exynos camera that bad compared to snapdragon?
I hope samsung will drop prices of s10+ when note 10 will be annouced, the 970$ price here is way too much
I do.... The biggest upgrade for me is camera..its a way better than 6t. I miss oxygen OS cleanliness and neat. I also miss 6t optical FP, i dont know but it seems faster on 6t...and what i really miss is MOD for 6t and flexibility of rooting and modding.

Seems to be hardware related. I'll try to find the camera comparison and link it here

Seems related to HDR and wide angle cam shots.

Thanks
So the cpu can't handle photo processing at full potential, this is strange given exynos is perhaps not as good as 855 but certainly capable of complex image processing. I am not a big fan of super wide photos with a smartphone, so how's the difference with the normal lens and 2x optical zoom?
I came from the 6T to an S10+ and went back to the store yesterday to exchange the phone to a pixel 3. Couldn't get past the fingerprint sensor issues, duplicated apps including an app store, and Android auto didn't work as well in my civic as with my pixel 2 or 6T. Not sure why
How would you guys compare it to the pixel 3
On edge whether I should sell my pixel 3 and get a S10+
Is the camera (point and shoot) better than the pixel 3

I exchanged my S10+ for a P3XL because the fingerprint sensor, even with the update and the screen protector off doesn't work well at all. I have very dry hands, maybe that's why but for me it was bad. The 6T had no problems.
As to the UI, I actually like it. We can cry about updates all day but stock One UI has more features than Stock Android and some of them are really nice. Having a video on the lockscreen for example, themes, the animations, lots of very nice things about One UI but something that you can't get away from is duplicate apps. Samsung backup, android backup. Samsung play store, android play store, etc.
When you look at the phone's hardware, the S10 is so much nicer and the cutout, even the double one, is nicer than a notch. Using the phone though, for me, is much nicer on 6T and Pixel.

How does the camera fare?
I came from the 6t and the only thing I miss is viper4android. Dolby sound is a step up from previous Samsung phones, but I still get better sound with viper on a rooted phone. I will have to say that Dolby is pretty good and it will have to do becAuse the snapdragon will never get root ?

Anyone coming from samsung galaxy note 10 plus?

anyone coming from note 10 plus? What are your thoughts, impressions and any regrets please?
I'd check on Reddit, noticed a few already made the switch.
I have a Samsung note 10 note and I love it! Nothing to say
I came from S10e which is for the comparision itself a better equivalent because Note 10 Plus is a bit more unique to be fair. But to respond your question. I am 100 % happy with ma choice to go for the P4. I just love it. And I am honestly impressed by the battery. Ain't super but good enough for me to manage all day long having evyrything turned on (90Hz display always on, Motion Gestures that work awesome e.g. with Spotify etc.). Futhermore having qi chargers in ma office, at home, in the car. So I couldn't care less for SOT. Anyways, a perfect phone - for me
I came from s10+ and I have no regrets. Forgot how much more polished and smooth the pixel line is. Battery is ok. I make it over 24+ hours almost every charge.
Hello, abit late, I came on p4 after 5 months with N10 plus. No regrets at all. I found pixel 4 better. Smoother. Battery in standby is better than note. I turned off AOD motion sense and assistant, I never use them. I get like 2-3 % battery per night. Screen is better calibrated. I miss Dolby Atmos. That was really nice. Apart that is amazing.
I came from an S10+.
Not entirely by choice, since I slammed my 1yr old S10+ (without even a scratch on it) in my trunk and killed it (with 11 more payments left). I had saved up to pay it off and get a Pixel 5 XL later this year, but had to get a phone NOW and found a killer deal on a Pixel 4.
I've had Nexus phones in the past, and forgot how much better "Google" phones were than other, higher end, manufacturer phones were.
The Pixel is so much smoother and responsive. I don't miss the larger screen as much as I though I would either, but I do miss the extra battery insurance (last longer between charges), but the Pixel 4 is getting better since getting it almost a week ago.
Coming from S10e and Note10, there isn't much of a difference in the overall speed of my new Pixel 4 (just a few days old).
I'm not a fan of the Pixel launcher just because the icons are too small. No option to resize and unable to change the grid size.
I want to use the stock navigation gestures and there's still compatibility issues with 3rd party launchers like Nova so it's a no go for me.
Font style is INCONSISTENT throughout the UI as sub-menus have different font styles (ex. go to Display > Colors. The font style is different from the one you have chosen from the launcher).
I'd say the overall look of Samsung One UI is way way better than the "stock" Google Pixel phone UI.
The read/write speed is also slow. Take note I still have my S10e with me and both are using UFS 2.1. Loading of pictures from Photos is noticeably slower and deleting pictures from TRASH in Google Photos takes AGES in my Pixel 4 (say, I have 10 photos in there). And no, I am not connected to the cloud so these are all local files.
I never had this issue from a Samsung or even my Motorola.
I also encountered a weird lag/stutter when playing a game (Mobile Legends). This is after some 20-minute game. I was about to navigate out of the app but I couldn't because of the stuttering (it doesn't response to the touch and it seems like the phone underclocked itself). The only way is to bring up the pill and force stop the app.
All the these minor quirks make me think how the Google employees performed their testing. (I'm a software tester by profession).
As for the camera, we all know how good it is so I won't talk about that anymore.
