Root acess - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Device variant xt1643
ROM version 6.1.0 64-bit, build date Tuesday June 12th
Dirty flashed the ROM over the previous build
The issue: I'm not getting root access neither by flashing magisk nor by super su, I need root access to replace my son.xml file in order to use mobile data as my access point names are locked otherwise.
I'm not using any theme, mods, or any other custom kernel.

You didn't mention the ROM name ? If its resurrection remix guessing from release date. Then clean flash the build again with nano gapps. Definitely you will get root, just make sure you flash the magisk at the time of flashing ROM itself.

Actually since we're talking about RR, you can go on the official Lineage OS page and download the SU addon for 15.1 from the "Extras" submenu of the Downloads page. Just flash it at the same time as the ROM and enable "Root mode" in Developer Options. Still, I'd rather use Magisk, but if that doesn't work then give the SU addon a shot.

Beta 7.1.2

Good morning, I wanted to know if I can upgrade to Android 7.1.2 beta with root and custom recovery installed. Do I have to remove them before upgrading or the upgrade will remove them automatically ? Will my device even boot if I update with root and custom recovery?
Thanks
Nope. Cant with custom recovery..

Your phone will boot loop if you don't go back to stock recovery first. I tried just to see what would happen and that's what happened. People who tried to flash it with Flashify reported no success.

Stock ROM? Important information you omitted. From a guy who always runs the latest stock ROM rooted and custom recovery here's how you do it: You do not have to remove them first, and although they (SU & kernel) will be overwritten with the new boot.img, it is very easy and straightforward. You need the TWRP flashable (beta) OTA zip file, in the OP here. Put the latest SU and your custom kernel on the device root, or wherever. (should already be there) and then reboot to TWRP recovery. Select "Install" and then select the OTA you downloaded above, and tap "Add more zips". Next you want to add the latest SU zip (2.79 SR3) and last add your kernel. Mine is EX. Once you have queued all 3 zips, in less than a minute you will be back up and running 7.1.2 , rooted and with kernel. Even if you flash each file individually you will still be ok. (OTA, SU, Kernel). See the same thread further down... Credit for the TWRP flashable OTA goes to @Displax.

June update Pure Nexus and Magisk v12&13 - No root?

Coming from the latest paranoid android build; did a complete clean flash, including format data.
Flashed June Vendor
Flashed June (6/12) Pure Nexus and Beans Gapps.
Flashed June (6/5) Flash Kernel
Flashed Magisk (I started with V12 and app version 4.x.x and when that didn't work, I used the uninstaller and tried the beta V13 and app version 5.x.x.)
Neither attempt had root but Magisk showed it as installed. In the Magisk app, in the side drawer, the uppermost choice is missing where it shows "Properly rooted", MAGISKSU:8, and Safetynet Check button. There is, however, a safety net check on the default page which fails.
I later flashed the latest beta of SuperSU (after again running the uninstaller) and it's partially working, some apps show no root but apps like Titanium Backup show root and work fine.
Is anyone getting root with Magisk on June PN? Am I doing something wrong or flashing in the wrong order?
I would like system root with Magisk, are there other steps I need to take?
Will report the magisk/supersu bugs to their proper locations as well.
Thanks for any help.
Don't use the latest beta app 5 it for me had issues when I switched back to last stable magisk app (4.33) all was working again. I've flashed magisk 12 zip before and after kernel both with success. If root doesn't work after booting up first time go back to recover and flash magisk zip again.
flashed without flash kernel, just bean gapps and Supersu 2.82 SR1.... everything working fine here.
You should really flash the vendor after everything like the kernel to be safe but that isn't an option.

Also, my rom comes with magisk prebuilt so for me it is rom with magisk then beans gapps then kernel then other mods then vendor.

How can I root my Moto g4 plus correctly?

I tried all methods which are there on site but each time same and only problem is coming that is my phone is not getting rooted correctly I tried so many times but when I'll check with root checker it says it's not rooted but I successfully unlocked bootloader but I can't complely root it, can someone help me?
What device do you have and what ROM are you running?
If you're rooting on the stock Motorola ROM, do you have TWRP flashed/booted, then flashed ElementalX? Afterwards, what root managers are you using? You could try magisk 16 or 15.3. However, if you've previously used SuperSU or another root manager, you may have to re-flash the original stock kernel (then flash ElementalX then root) to remove any remainders of the old root managers, else they may interfere with magisk to the point of the root not being stable.
I have Moto g4 plus XT 1643 and I tried to root with by using twrp latest version and lineage os 14.1 athene. The was working fine but my phone is still showing that this device is not rooted

What root manager are you using? The official Lineage OS (as of Jan 2017) does not come with a root manager, you must download and flash your own. You could either use the Lineage_SU_addon (you'd want the arm variant for 14.1) or magisk or SuperSU as a root manager.
I am new in this so I don't know that much details so can you help me by giving me link so that I can go through step by step and try to do what you are saying

1)Download the Lineage SU addon (from here https://download.lineageos.org/extras - you want the arm 14.1 zip) OR magisk (from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 ) Only download one, please and if you want to switch, you ideally want to restore your backup or dirty flash the custom ROM to restore the Lineage kernel.
2)Reboot your device to TWRP.
3)In TWRP backup your device. Keep this backup safe.
4)In TWRP, go to 'Install' and flash the package you downloaded.
5)Wipe cache and Dalvik in TWRP after the flash.
6)Reboot.
7)Verify you have root.

Hi I'm new to XDA Forums, I was searching for posts about rooting my Moto g4 Plus. I would like to know Why we should flash a kernel before flashing SuperSU or Magisk ? Nb: I just only want the root access. Not in a plan to flash a custom rom. Thanks in Advance.

The stock Motorola kernel in stock Nougat ROMs appears to have anti rooting measures included (I think DM Verity?) If you attempt to root on this stock Nougat kernel, you'll likely soft brick/bootloop your device.
A custom kernel (e.g. elementalX v2.0.1 for stock) does not have these anti rooting defences, so it's safer to root with magisk. I would recommend magisk as super SU hasn't been updated in some time.
It appears that this need to flash a custom kernel before rooting applies to Nougat stock ROMs; marshmallow stock ROMs and the Oreo soak test stock ROM appear not to require a custom kernel.
As an aside, custom kernels and root are not necessary to flash custom ROMs. The only tools you require are an unlocked bootloader and the correct TWRP. The kernels included with these custom ROMs may also have anti rooting measures disabled, so it's safer to directly root without having to use a custom kernel.

Multiboot - What am I doing wrong?

I want to have a Samsung Stock based ROM and a LOS/AOSP ROM on my phone and switch between them, but I can't get it working. I always end up on a bootloop at the S7 Edge logo.
My bootloader and modem is updated to latest version. I wanted to install Hyper ROM and LOS 16.
So I first installed Hyper ROM, downloaded the latest version of Dual Boot Patcher, open it, allow root access, go to ROMs in the app, select my System to set the kernel. Then I go to patcher section, add the LOS-zip, gapps-zip and magisk-zip (does magisk even work with this? have tried without but also no luck) and patch them as secondary. I reboot into recovery, flash patched LOS and gapps, reboot aaaand... I'm stuck at a bootloop.
This seems to happen no matter what I try, how I switch them around, also if I patch the Hyper ROM zip as primary first. Nothing seems to help. Am I doing something wrong here?

D802 any root methods are not working!

hi ppl
it was rooted before. used twrp and some custom roms. but later it unrooted somehow.
I tried flashing super su, magisk and ioroot. supersu and magisk turn with an error msg
io root made it stuck on bootloader animation so I flashed a backup.
how to root it?
thx in advance
1) flash latest twrp http://www.gregtwallace.com/lgg2-projects/twrp/ - then reboot into twrp
2) made absolutely all wipes incl internal and data (delete all stuff) - then reboot into twrp
3) connect to usb - and simply copy rom, gapps, and root solution what you want to flash
latest stable magisk for twrp - https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
latest supersu for twrp - Recovery Flashable.zip http://www.supersu.com/download
3) flash the rom what you wanted and flash gapps
3) flash magisk or supersu
(if android 7.1.2 or higher of course - I recommend magisk, because of working nfc pay features, a lot of great systemless addons etc...)
if you prefer old lollipop rom (for example CloudyG2_3.3 ) - it supersu only.
This is the correct sequence - which will eliminate problems with the firmware. If you deleted and installed the root earlier (as you say)

jeezes)) you already killed the rom.... and then restore the all this restores backup, this is a "dirty flash" with a bunch of "remnants". I recommend to do clean flash it in the specified sequence and everything will be ok.
You will spend a couple of 1-2 hours only on installing (and setting) completely all applications. It is not so difficult. But it will save you from a bunch of nonsense questions...
If you actually don't have TWRP recovery installed or old Kit kat Rom - this is absolutely another question and the instructions will not work for you. Also, Kit Kat and Lollipop based ROMs does not support Magisk - because of this error.

thx bro. I did all the steps but it seems same problem going on. sure I want the latest of everything. better updated all. so, using the latest twrp, I wipe all data then format all data then again wipe everything
this aosp rom and gapps worked perfectly. then flashed teh magisk but again its unrooted.
it installs magisk perfectly but root checker says its not rooted. anyway thx for help
btw, aosp rom android 9 has a bluetooth bug. giving a bluetooth stopped message every 10 seconds.
so any advice anout that problem?
you must grant root permission when popup (magisk) appears.
its not automatically
popup similar as in supersu
root works excellent on d802 with Magisk
for example Es File Explorer or any Root Checker

I use 7.1.2 android based AospExtended v 4.6

I used supersu and it turned out to be "certification verify" problem. OS not running because of this problem but says rooted. so I can still reach twrp but it really become annoying. this is my old phone and will use as 2nd in my Thailand trip soon.
what to do now? can I use unrooted with a sim card? with no problem?
Please, don't use this nonsense "overquoting" when you answer to someone. Have some respect to the forum rules, and users.
if you want stable rom for LGG2-D802 flash
1) aosp extended based on 7.1.2 or 8.1 versions of Android.
2) flash gapps nano
3) flash magisk zip
4) after rom starts - do the first quick settings - then open Magisk (and if needed update the Magisk manager)
Do not flash both (supersu and magisk) risk to brick the phone.
"device not certified" messege will be always if you use Supersu. It's obviously. Using supersu you unable to use apps like Google pay or any banking apps, because of system root.
Magisk is systemless solution, that's why Google do not recognize Magisk's root. And Play Store on about screen always show "Your device is certified". Also you can Hide root from some apps using Hide option in Magisk manager (it's very useful for local banking apps).
I have a suspicion that you used an older version of Android KitKat (official). And now you try to flash a new Rom (above the Android 7.1.2+). You can't do this. Because you must have Lollipop bootloader. You must be an Android Lillipop first. And then (get Root, then TWRP). And after all that - you will be able to flash some of Rom we are talking about.

Oh Finally!
dowloaded aosp 8.1 and all done. I was trying to use android 9 to be updated. But, pie becoming to be a "creampie" to me so I listened your word. and did it
just opened recovery mode and deleted all the zips. and copied new ones and flashed in order
1) aosp extended 8.1
2) open gapps nano for 8
3) magisk beta (yes this time I tried beta ver and it worked!)
after settings etc. checked with root checker and it was ok. so magisk.apk is not necessary now
thx again bro
