SM-T580 Smart View Issue - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

Basically, the Smart View feature is present, but it will not detect any devices. I have an S9+ that detects and casts to multiple devices on a regular basis. I also had a T550 that worked great with Smart View. I've searched and cannot find a whole lot in the area of solutions, but this appears to be a common issue. I also chat with a Samsung rep and they wanted me to send the tablet in for repairs (ummm, no).
Is there a non-root solution to this problem? I've tried the Developer Options solution, as well as turning device detection on and off in connection settings. I purchased it this week, and it had Android 7.0 out of the box. When attempting to update the software, it says that the device is up to date.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Even a "I ain't got that problem, son" or "Everybody's dealing with this and there's no fix" would be helpful at this point. Is this common or nah?

OK. I think I know what's going on. It is possible that Samsung has just "silently" phased out Chromecast support in Smart View with their newest software and firmware updates for their most recent tablets. It's either that, or they've made a big gaffe in the software/firmware department and refuse to own up to it. I'm still baffled that they wanted me to ship my tablet in for this. I'm still able to mirror my screen with my S9+ to Chromecast devices, so it may be a tablet thing. No problem, though. I have a Roku that I can mirror my screen on just fine. That will have to do. Thanks for all of your... never mind. :good:

This is from a conversation in the Samsung community forums. This is not a Samsung employee, but an experienced user. I think the case is pretty much closed. If you want to mirror your SM-T580 to your TV, use either a Roku or a Samsung smart tv.

[Q] Preferred Wireless Display Adapter?

I recently upgraded my Nexus 7 and saw this in the "What's New" section:
Share what’s on your phone on the big screen.
Android 4.2 allows devices to enable wireless display. You can share movies, YouTube videos, and anything that’s on your screen on an HDTV. Just connect a wireless display adapter to any HDMI-enabled TV to mirror what’s on your screen quickly and easily.

I immediately went to Amazon and looked for different "wireless display adapters" per the announcement above, but I'm totally in the dark to which are going to be compatible with the Nexus 7. Does anyone have a recommendation?
Also, will I be able to connect to my Wi-Fi and still have an internet connection? I'm assuming I will be able to and it's more like they're all networked together (Computer, Display Adapter, Nexus 7, etc.), correct?
Lastly, I don't believe I noticed a new app on my phone to facilitate the connection once the Wireless Display Adapter is purchased and connected; am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for all of your help, you guys are the best!
Start with this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987695 Post 2 & beyond.
Thanks for the direction. Checked that thread out and found that Miracast is not compatible with N7, but is there any other hardware/software that would be?

The N7 currently does not support Miracast, and there is doubt it ever can since it does not support 802.11a.
ya gotta love it
If mrs pete and Mr repeat sat on a log Mrs repeat fell off . what would happen next
This subject has been beaten to death .. Im so sad it does not work But that is the reality ..

I have scoured the internet for days and days trying to find the solution to not having hdmi capability and hopefully I'm on the right path. The wireless way sounds like it will be the only possibility so I was reading an article on engadget . Unfortunately I'm unable to post a link to it on here. But if you search nexus 7 WiFi media you will find the article I am referring to.
Any of you more intelligent people have any comments, sounds like a 100 dollar solution. Thanks

That's not screen mirroring. It's just DLNA/UPNP. And there are better and cheaper solutions. First look if your TV already supports DLNA/UPNP. If not, get yourself a raspberry pi and install raspbmc, openelec or any other distro that gives you XBMC. Then just enable it in the XBMC settings and get yourself a xbmc remote and a UPNP/DLNA app like bubbleupnp. That way you can even watch nearly any media you want on your big screen including avi(enable unsupportet mime types in bubbleupnp settings) and youtube videos(in the youtube app just press share and then share it via your xbmc remote).
But it is still no screen mirroring like miracast. I still have hope for miracast on the n7, since MIRACAST DOES NOT NEED 802.11a it is only optional for better performance in some situations.
And if that doesn't work, there is always the amazing open source community. Android Transporter just needs to be implemented into Cyanogenmod and given sound support and we don't need to wait for the big players to implement miracast on our n7.
Look at what asus has to say.

DLNA Support???

I can't get my new S5 to show my Sony TV in devices, to screen mirror. My daughters S4 works just fine. I've looked and looked through the settings and searched. Did Samsung turn this off to force us to buy the damn dongle or Chromecast device??? Again, my daughters s4 works perfectly every time. My TV shows right up, and it displays her phone screen.
Anybody know? Thanks
Bumping this up. Can't believe nobody has tried to mirror their S5.. Something's changed from the S4 to S5 apparently. And it looks like they are forcing me to buy Chromecast. Very disappointed in Samsung, if this is the case. Anyone?
...
Hi aeturbo,
looks like this is now available via the "Quick Connect" function (button in notification area).
DLNA is supported.
Good luck,
Matt

Is it possible I just got a bad unit? Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, SM-T230NU.

I got a Galaxy Tab 4 for Christmas, bought from Amazon for $119.00. Chromecast and OK Google both seem to not be working and I've done some extensive trouble shooting.
With Chromecast, I have a Sony XBR850C with built in AndroidTV and the tablet makes a connection and then immediately ends when casting. I've tried it with the Chrome browser on my Mac and it works flawlessly so I'm ruling out the TV as the cause.
With OK Google it doesn't allow me to train the voice model, it just sits at "Listening" when it asks me day OK Google 3 times. If I chose "finish Later" it takes me to the Google Now screen, I type the mic button and it hears me fine. I've tried uninstalling the updates and everything else I found online that is supposed to help but nothing did.
That's two of Google's core services that won't work on the phone. Everything else seems to be copacetic but I need those two things to work. I got the tablet to serve as a "living room device." It's basically a remote for my entertainment system and home automation devices but I'm a cord cutter so sometimes I'll need to cast from it.
Any thoughts on why these two features won't work? Do they share a common function that could be defective? Maybe the hardware is bad? Orr maybe there's something I'm not doing right but I don't think that's it.
My tab 4's OK google doesn't work also. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. My chromecast is fine. If you are using a automation app and it is set to turn off WiFi once screen is off (for battery savings), that could end the connection. Sorry if I'm not of much help, I am still a great noob

Wireless Dex UI

It will be awesome if someone can mod Samsung Note 9 to display Dex UI wirelessly (i.e. using wifi mirroring technology).
Personally, I'm against it because the lag will just ruin the experience... But, well, experiencing it myself can change my opinion
Um OK.

I have the Microsoft wireless adapter (Miracast) that I use with my Surface Pro 3. I also occasionally use it with the Note 8, mostly for watching videos. The experience has been great and the lags are infrequent. Certainly not a dealbreaker.
I think it will indeed be cool if Dex can be done via Miracast. I use couple of Dex apps (Dex Max and Desktop Hub) and it will be interesting to find out what their developers think. Maybe it will be possible to add a toggle to the apps that trigger Dex mode instead of screen mirroring when the phone is connected via Miracast...
Great idea
I guess Samsung heard you. Read this article ->

Awesome! After 2 years, my post now became a reality with the recently announced Galaxy Note 20 ultra.
Wondering now if this feature can be brought to our old note 9/note 10 via software update or does this require a specific hardware?
What you think guys?
Would be very happy if it's a software thing and they give it to us with the OneUI 2.5 update (if we even get that first xd).

GOOD NEWS !!!
Well I don't how and when it came to our Galaxy Note 9 but the Wireless DEX function is indeed there !
I was just testing the mirroring function with my Galaxy Note 9 and a Amazon FireStick (should work the same with a Google Chromecast) connected onto a 24" monitor via Smart View, then by chance at the end I just pressed the Dex icon and the Dex desktop display just appeared on the monitor !!!
I still have a message telling the "connected TV" is not fully optimized for wireless Dex but it's still working.
Then, There is a second message saying we can use the Note 9 as a touchpad and it works !
I don't have a USB-C hub with me but I guess we could use a mouse and a keyboard as well...

Don't remember when it came either, but I've been using it flawlessly on my roku tv for streaming from sites. Still get hiccups with it occasionally after a period of time though. Reconnecting usually seems to fix them it seems.

T95Z Plus TV BOX Android 12 Allwinner H618 - Not able to open any VPN Android 12 Allwinner H618 - Not able to open any VPN

Hi all, hopefully I am posting in the right place for this query.
So I bought a T95Z Plus TV BOX Android 12 Allwinner H618 and I thought I was making a decent upgrade from my old R10 box which still works despite being Android 7.1!!! However upon arrival and setup of the T95Z Plus I came unstuck when I could not open PIA VPN app. When I attempt to open the app, it literally tries to open then stops and nothing happens. All this in the blink of an eye. No splash screen, nothing. Just double click the app, brief spin as though it were loading then nothing.
I obviously went into overdrive to find a fix and basically came up with very little to try believing it was PIA app. Initially I read it was some kind of problem with Android 12 and all VPNs however has since been patched. But from what I can see it seems to be the T95plus is the issue.
The advice I have read and tried so far is:
to uninstall the app, reinstall the app.
Try the apk install that can be obtained directly from the PIA website rather than googleplay store
Turn of battery saver mode
Clear Cache of the app
I also tried another VPN, this time a free VPN, however this app opens but just sits trying to connect for ever.
So I am wondering has anyone with the same experience as me, or the knowledge got something for m to try in order to rectify the problem? I would return the box however it took so long to arrive to the UK that I don't think I can return it as it's past 14 days. Stupidly did not anticipate such a problem
If anyone can help I would be very grateful, thank you in advance.
I am compelled to write this before I give a real answer. Allwinner chips are utter garbage and avoid them. The H616 boxes were total garbage and riddle with spyware. You would do well to run a PCAP and see if its calling home like the H616 was.
First off download the APK directly from PIA. Once you have it just click on it. If prompted about install from unknown sources click ok. This will install the app. Don't do anything yet. Go to Settings and just search VPN. It needs to be there because the PIA app requires it to run. It's standard in Android and it should be there. But if the firmware was modified it could disable the feature or remove it as it could prevent the box from calling home.
Here is PIA's own guide on how to do all this.
Basically if its hanging it's because the PIA App isn't seeing the VPN service. I speak from experience since I disabled it once when I didn't haven't clue what the hell I was doing. Since you said a free VPN was having the same issue my suspicion would be the box itself. You can install one of the hidden settings apps and see if you can get to the VPN Setting. If you cannot then you need to just return the box and get a Amlogic or a decent Rockchip. For TV Boxes Allwinner chips are dumpster fires.
I blew my first Amlogic box a few years back before I knew that destroying them is near impossible and I recovered it later. I bought a T95 because it looked great, price was great, and I was clueless. I had nothing but trouble with it for the week or so I fought with it. The nail in the coffin was watching network traffic flowing when none should have been. That's when I ran my own PCAP and saw it was talking to Chinese servers for services I knew weren't in use. This isn't an indictment on Chinese boxes as I have a plethora of them. It's an indictment on the crap quality any of these boxes have. You get what you pay for. I'm a firm believer in cheap and cheerful. Just with AllWinner their reputation is utter garbage in the TV Box market. Most go with Amlogic because you have the most flexibility with them since Amlogic tools are readily available and custom firmware is easily obtained. Rockchip is the next up but the tools are much more limited and there is less options for custom firmware.
My real suggestion is RMA the box if you can. If you can't, eat the loss and buy a Amlogic. You can always look at getting *Elec projects or Armbian or something for the H618 but don't hold your breath as AllWinner isn't wildly supported. Their lack of tools for their chips means no one is inclined to deal with the pain involved for developing for their chips. Plus their habit of gimping chips due to heat throttling means it's inferior in the long run because you will constantly be running throttled as AllWinner chips run hot.
TV Boxes aren't known for their quality cooling already. If you are heavy user you get creative in providing cooling. The easiest is a USB powered fan. Not the best solution since thermal dynamics clearly operate in a parallel dimension in the factories where cheap Android boxes are made. Heat does not rise in that dimension. It sinks. This is why the majority of boxes have holes for heat dissipation at the bottom of the box. So while a USB fan does help, if you want to get wild and crazy check out what some the kids at 4PDA come up with. The easiest option is pop the box, take the board out and go nuts with a drill and a whatever sized bit you feel comfy using. Which means, use common sense. If you want to use a hole saw bit I'm not going to say no. Live your truth and don't let anyone stop you.
Hope this helps you.
PS - I'm far from a new member. Just a serial lurker. I figured consumed enough that I might as well return some of the knowledge I have gathered here and a plethora of other sites. Plus I felt bad for you. I was you with an AllWinner TV Box. I know how frustrating it was.
Hi Spudzz. First off thanks for the reply. Just a little additional info regarding this, but basically last night before your reply I had upgraded the firmware to a more recent version, if not the most recent version and despite install PIA again I got a little further as in the app will open, but it will not allow me to sign into my account.
So yeah, there is definitely something up with these boxes. I tried a free one VPNfast or something and this also failed to connect to a server.
What amazes me with these T95Z plus boxes is they seem very popular. There is a whole other thread on here regarding them indeed that is where I learnt about the different firmware img's. One single post has a guy asking them same thing as me saying he can't open his vpn. But no one replied to him.
Unfortunately I cannot return this box, I don't think I can anyways because it has been past 2 weeks since I got it. I will however lookout now for Amlogic box as you recommend. Do you know if there are Android 12 versions of these kicking around or does it matter if I bought one that is Android 11?
I am coming from using an old S10 Android Tv box that still works to this day. It's Android 7.1 would you believe. The reason I want to switch if every so often I get an app that wont work properly regarding the progress bar. Videos will play but you can't rewind, fastforward, click on the timeline anywhere in the video. The latest app to go was youtube and since I use YouTube a lot I thought I was making a good choice getting a more up to date Android Box with Android 12 installed. So many good reviews on Amazon regarding this box as well. It's crazy. I didn't buy my box from Amazon but I just use that as an example of where some good reviews are.
***edit*** by the way the VPN settings on the T95 I could find, but there weren't many options and I didn't know what to do with those that were there.
