I've already unlocked, installed TWRP and custom ROMS on several devices, so i know about fastboot, ADB, USB drivers for my device.
But with zenfone3 it's still pretty confusing for my brains so please be patient with me and explain the following:
I have a new zenofone 3 updated to stock oreo 8.0 already by OTA and i want to unlock, instal TWRP/Root and a oreo custom ROM.
In some guides for unlocking in this forum i read about flashing a RAW image before unlocking. Is this really necessary? If so: what for?
And then after unlocking i read about installing stock OREO again. hmm...
Please could somebody post here short necessary steps for my zenfone 3 with stock oreo 8.0 to instal a custom ROM OREO 8.1 on my device?
Thanks a lot in advance!

1) There are 2 ways to unlock
Official- This method is very easy (just download the bootloader unlock apk to unlock but this method will void warranty and you will not get any OTA Updates
Unofficial- This method is safe too, but it requires to flash RAW files (this method retains warranty and you will get OTA Updates)
The reason why you should flash Oreo RAW because Factory RAW can only boot FASTBOOT and touch screen will not work.
Just follow my steps and you can install custom ROM without any issues.

Hi newbie here, I want to flash cm 13 on my J500F but I have few Questions,
1) DO i need root access to unlock bootloader, to flash TWRP recovery and CM13?
2) To unlock bootloader do I have to just enable the 'OEM unlock' in developer options and that will unlock my bootloader? or Is there more procedure?

So oem unlock just unlocks bootloader for custom binary like custom recovery like TWRP in our case. No you don't need to root stock rom to do that. Just flash the right version of the recovery. Next thing is to follow cm13 installation instructions (about what to wipe and so on..).
I hope that i helped you with my answers. If you continue to have questions, ask them bellow and don't forget to quote my reply so I can find yours more easy. Have a great day.
I just flashed the recovery then CM13 and it was rooted. I have however give back to CM 12.1 as CM 13 ain't finished as yet.

I have flashed twrp recovery and got it without unlocking bootloader, what happens if I try to flash CM, will it cause any issues, because bootloader isn't unlocked?
Probably

For safety just unlocked your bootloader, flash the latest twrp3.0.2-5 and flash CM13/CM14. Make sure you are on stock MM firmware before flash CM13 version and above.

I am on OOS 4.5.13 "stock", i used the engineering mode exploit to get magisk root while my bootloader is still locked, now i want to upgrade to latest OOS oreo but i am afraid that this exploit might end up bricking the device. My bootloader is still locked and i have stock recovery (sorry if stating the obvious) and i have no problem losing my data to upgrade to oreo, but i would like to get magisk on oreo when i upgrade, any tips/precautions or a link to a guide would be very helpful. I don't need to root right away as i might like getting OTA updates but i don't wan't to wipe the device another time for some special procedure.
Should i unlock bootloader then upgrade or reverse the order? I keep getting these prompts to upgrade with a disclaimer that full system needs to be downloaded, should i just do it OTA?
PS: i have titanium backup working and can backup the apps i need.

if you are ok with loosing data then i suggest you to unlock the bootloader then flash the latest oos build from the official website ( that makes it easy for you to switch roms easily in the future )
if you need your data then just accept the ota ( obviously you will lose root access and magisk features )
but imo no harm can be done accepting the ota as oneplus itself know that most of users are rooted so they send you the ota as a full build that replace the firmware parts previously modified
the choice is yours

Alright, I have my rare new unlockable G6 and want to get going.
But, you know, I want to update to Oreo 8.0 or even 8.1. Should I do that first before going thru the bootloader unlocking procedure? Or should I update after I root it?
(also is 8.1 something I should seek, or is 8.0 just fine?)
Then what about TWRP? I read that Zefie had it all together, then passed it off to Eliminater74. Do I have to install Zefie’s Melina TWRP 3.2.1 if I unlock the Nougat? Then what, I overwrite that with Eliminater74’s TWRP 3.2.3 when I update to Oreo?
Also, what about Mauronofrio’s Tool All In One? I like the idea, I sure did like the Wugfresh tool. But I am not sure it helps beyond installing drivers. I am not afraid of adb. Is there something useful in this tool?
Please comment if you have experience or knowledge of any of these varied subjects.
Hi,
I have had my A1 since it first came out and thinking of rooting and flashing Pixel OS on it now. I am currently in latest Android 9 and in Malaysia.
I read up some of the other threads about rooting and flashing rom but there seem to be alot of conflicting instructions and alot of ways to root which is making it very confusing for me now.
Any kind soul can point me the most reliable way to root and flashing Pixel rom?
Thanks in advance
The way I did it is unlocking bootloader and then booting twrp via fastboot. From there you can easily install magisk, custom ROMs, kernels, and other modifications.
Remember that if you want to be able to boot to recovery without using a PC you'll need to flash a twrp installer
