[Q] Stock or Custom Rom? - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

I'm actually using 8.0 stock rom, but I was thinking to install an custom rom but I don't know, what did you guys think is better? In terms of battery, performance, gaming, etc...
In case you prefer a custom rom, which one do you recommend?

I am on Stock (been using Stock+Franco kernel but decided to go back to completely stock). If you want best battery life then install kernel like Franco or Mint. If you want more customization then consider using Custom ROM. Good custom ROMS are AEX and RR. Maybe theres more but i didn't bother checking it out since i'm on stock.

[Q] Rooting, flashing custom rom but necessary to flash a kernel as well?

Hi,
Quick question I am still having trouble wrapping my head around the concept about kernels. I am planning to root my nexus 4 and flash a custom rom (purity rom) but am i required to also flash a custom kernel? Or am I suppose to leave the kernel as is?
Thanks!

Depends upon your requirement .
As an example i use Fast USB charge a lot and is not available in any custom rom .
I also use Headphone volume boost which is yet again a kernel level change.
I would suggest you to use a custom kernel since it also gives better battery than stock .
If you are happy without it then forget about kernels . And in case u plan on flashing one make a CWM backup just in case.,
You could if you want to since you're already flashing custom roms. However, most custom rom come with custom kernel, so when you flash a custom rom it will replace your kernel with it's own. You can manually flash back your stock kernel if you want, using fastboot, but there is a flashable package as well in the Dev section.
Just know that due to codes and drivers, different kernels work with different roms. If you flash a 4.3 kernel to a 4.4 rom, it might lack certain necessary driver, such as PRIMA, so your wifi will no longer work. (You can fix this by flashing dePRIMAtor). CyanogenMod use Code Aurora Forum drivers, so if you use a kernel that doesn't support CAF, the screen colors will be messed up (you can lash a colorfix package which replace it with the non-CAF liboverlay.so).
A lot of people get wrapped too far up into flashing kernel and thinking it determine everything (performance + battery life) in their phone. As much of a heavy flasher that I am, I am willing to bet that you generally get the best battery life and stability just running stock. I did my own trial for this, with stock rom and kernel, the phone staying cooler and screen on time was longer. This is just my personal experience, it varies for each person.
But I mainly use custom kernel for features. Such as kernels that incorporate Faux color and sound, this allows changing their settings for much a better screen color and making the speaker louder. I also use the sweep2wake/sleep feature to turn on and off the screen.
If you intend to use custom kernels, I recommend using TricksterMod, it's the best app for modifying kernel settings.
Also just to mention this ahead of time, it's against XDA rules to make threads about what is the best rom/kernels.

[Q] Disastrous Battery LIfe on Any CM/AOKP/ PA/ based roms

after flashing alomost all the possible roms for i9500, i noticed that any CM/AOKP/AOSP/PA roms gives very bad battery life.
i can actually see the % coming down as i use it very lightly that too.( just using gallery, File manager, SMS ,etc) :crying:
but this is not the case when i use a stock or stock based ROM. Stock gives amazing battery.
i even tried many different kernels, still no use,
is there any way i can get max battery life ( like stock) thru any of the CM/AOKP/AOSP/PA roms? if so which ROM and which kernel
cz i like the CM looks and easiness in functioning much better than stock . and i would like to use 4.4.3 or 4.4.4
Currently Running
Stock 4.4.2
KOT49H.i9500XXUFNC1 build
stock kernel

stay on stock if u want good battery life.
if u really want a lollipop rom that badly go for the rom from danvdh.
custom roms are useless. it's only for people with too much time.
install stock rom, root it, debloat it and if u want custom rom features just install xposed.
no need for any custom roms because they are always worse if it gets to battery life.
if u say otherwise u have no idea ... it's ok if u have fun flashing roms all day and like to try that and that but don't say it works perfectly fine and especially that the battery life is as same as good or even better (i lol everytime i read this in a custom rom thread)
Try phoenix rom 10.2, or Albe rom. Both excellent
Sent from my SM-N910S using XDA Free mobile app
cm 12 by antaresone best rom

Is there any rom that has everything working (nfc, wifi etc)

So is there any rom (I think stock based would be my best bet) that has no important bugs? Or should I just flash a custom kernel on a stock firmware?
No there is no such perfect custom rom due to some technical limitations.
Try stable ROMS, there is more probability you find everything working there. I suggest you Resurrection Remix for personalization and CM 12.1 for stability. Btw is your choice, choose the one suits you best.

as you said the stock based is your best bet but for me i use s5 mini rom it has everything working exept NFC because s5 mini does not have that feature
This rom has probably less bugs than the rest http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-neo/development/rom-galaxy-s3-neo-stock-firmware-t2975102
Best is cm11 with sev3n kernel. 6h of screen good camera(cm12 is a joke), radio and everything. No bugs no lags and finally a decent phone. If you want lollipop flavour install cm11 ideal theme from store. It looks the same. After trying almost everything it,s my choice.

Offline chaning work? Battery idle 7 day work? Thank you.
(SORRY BAD MY ENGLISH 50%)
Yes offline charging works and in cm12 also works. Only cm12.1 has that bug. Try kang cm 12.1 after flashing perharps 10 roms is now my favourite . Well i miss cm11 Camera but you can't have everything, i'm a little tired of KitKat and since yesterday we hace a good lollipop ROM with a good tweaked kernel and almost free of bugs.
I am using stock firmware 4.4.2 with xposed and some modifications. It is good and now i am going to try any custom kernel. For me, custom roms are useless especially those CM based.

Everyone's go to rom?

I'm wondering what everyone's go to rom is. I'm new to this phone and I'm looking for a reliable rom.
I'm on the stock due to the warranty, but i can suggest a rom based on AOSP code for a pure android experience. Less extra features more stability you get. Probably i'd choose the AOSiP, try several roms until you'll find the right for you.
Debloated stock rom, rooted with ElementalX kernel. Not as many options as with custom roms, but everything just works. I find with most custom roms the camera quality is lacking.
Going with stock rom, mainly cause of the camera quality.
Camera quality has been fine On aosp roms, I'm running viper right now with no issues

There is a fully working stock Moto Camera zip available as of yesterday that is working on custom ROMs. Just an FYI. It is on the g5 plus app forum.
