Hey everyone!
So I've read the suggested threads/pinned guide, but I just want to be absolutely sure of the process. I want to root my phone and install Pixel Experience. Right now, my bootloader is unlocked, but I'm on stock. So, am I right in that this would be the way to do it:
1. Go to fastboot, install TWRP recovery through fastboot
2. Make a NANDroid, back up EFS
3. Wipe everything
4. Install Pixel Experience .zip and Magisk .zip
5. Reboot, make sure it's all working
Am I missing anything? Thanks for reading - just wanted to be sure, the guide were a little difficult to understand!

That's ok so far, you have to reformat the data partition (the part where you have to say yes, not just the wipe) because this partition is encrypted and you are only able to make a backup of a decrypted data partition.

Hi,
My AT&T Atrix is running on 4.5.91 and is rooted
I would like to start using ROMs but would like to have the option to go back to what I have right now (ROM and Apps)
I just want to make sure I understand what I'm doing and keep it as simple as possible.
Unlock the BootLoader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22148143#post22148143
Then download and install ROM Manager, install CWM Recovery and then I can backup the current ROM
Then, I can install any Atrix ROM from the ROM Manager.
Is all this correct?
If yes, YIPPI!
If not, let me know where I'm wrong and try to keep it as simple as possible for me as I am quite a noob when it comes to ROMing and scared to death to brick my phone
BTW - I have titanium pro
Thanks!
1. unlock bootloader
2. install romracer's Custom CWM-based Recovery 5.0.2.7-atrix5 link
3. nandroid backup including webtop/osh partition
4. install any downloadable rom from the Atrix 4G Android Development forum
ok, you lost me
1) is the BL unlocking link correct? This is what I should use?
2) I see this requires some command line stuff, not sure how to do this. Is there an easier way? Any reason why I shouldn't use the recovery from ROM Manager?
3) What's nandroid
4) ok

Should work fine for bootloader unlock on AT&T Atrix.
2) I see this requires some command line stuff, not sure how to do this. Is there an easier way? Any reason why I shouldn't use the recovery from ROM Manager?
Romracer's just works better. Flash through fastboot. Get it here: Romracer Recovery
3) What's nandroid
Once you have recovery installed you will see a backup/restore menu selection. Just select this and follow the prompts. (Can take a wee bit to backup). After this, if you want to restore your phone to the state it was in when you created the backup, reboot to recovery and follow the restore prompts.
4) ok
Don't install any downloadable ROM, as some are actually psuedo ROM's. There is a common list of the ROM's everyone is using which are usually the first 1/2 dozen or so ROM's in the dev forum, as these are continually updated or new posts created for them. Any confusion over the ROM's, look through some of the other posts asking for help in ROM selection. (When you do flash a new ROM, do so on a FULL battery, and give the ROM time to boot up on the first reboot after flashing. Can take 10-15 minutes to boot that first time).

Hi
Much clearer now, thanks
But, a few more questions
Will unlocking the bootloader wipe any data?
The reason I liked ROM Manager is because it has a GUI for everything you need to do. And I still don't understand how to flash recovery from this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
Is this using ADB? I have no idea how to do this
Nandroid is a full backup of everything? System, apps etc?
Is the recovery wiped after installing a ROM or is the recovery like the bootloader and completely separate from the OS and Kernel?
Again, thanks for helping and sorry for my noobiness

No, data will be ok.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
You run fastboot through a cmd line on your PC. Your phone is connected to your PC via your USB cable, and is running in fastboot mode. From the cmd line you issue commands to flash recovery to your Atrix as described in the above linked thread. Best idea would be for you to Google and read about fastboot and moto-fastboot so you have a clear understanding of what is entailed in using it. It is very easy once you understand it.
Is this using ADB? I have no idea how to do this
No. Fastboot per the previous answer.
Nandroid is a full backup of everything? System, apps etc?
Yes, nandroid backup is a complete and full backup.
Is the recovery wiped after installing a ROM or is the recovery like the bootloader and completely separate from the OS and Kernel?
Recovery will not be wiped.
Again, thanks for helping and sorry for my noobiness
You're welcome.

Ok, cool. Still a few more questions:
Megaupload was shut down. Where can I find the BL unlocker?
Fastboot mode = usb debugging mode?
I understand what you're saying about this recovery, but - I like the fact that everything can be done through a GUI with a click of a button. So I can install the CWM recovery through ROM manager once the BL is unlocked?

You can download the script here:
http://j.mp/Ate8E5
Fastboot <> USB debugging
Fastboot = power up while holding down the volume down button until you see "fastboot" on the boot screen. Then press the volume up button to go into Fastboot mode
About recovery, if you're insecure (which is ok and understandable) just do everything through ROM Manager, it's easy
Anyway, most new ROMs have AROMA so you'll be fine
This guide will help you install the unofficial builds of CyanogenMod 12 and other Lollipop builds.
Disclaimer: These builds are not official and are very much pre-alpha builds. While many people have little issues, you may have issues yourself and without some knowledge of ROMing, you may end up bricking your device.
I and the people who built the ROMs are not responsible for you bricking your device or losing data.
Installation
Backup: If you do not backup your device, you will lose everything!
Install Titanium Backup and choose Backup all user apps from the backup batch actions
Titanium Backup requires that you are rooted to work. If you are not rooted, use a tool such as Helium.
Be sure to copy your backup to your computer just in-case the data in the "SD Card" partition gets deleted. Use Android File Transfer or ADB to do so.
Unlock Bootloader: If you did not root your device, you likely have not unlocked your bootloader and you will need to unlock your device using the guide here.
Recovery: You need to also make sure you have a custom recovery such as the TWRP recovery which an installation guide is also available here.
Downloads: If you have done all of the above, you are ready to begin the installation process.
First you need to download all these files to your device.
Google Apps from https://s.basketbuild.com/gapps
SuperSu from http://download.chainfire.eu/593/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.19.zip (optional for root)
Next you need to get a copy of CM12, you can do so in the following 2 ways.
Download a lollipop ROM. Choose from one of these known to work ROMs, build your own ROM, or find a ROM from someone else you trust (if you find another good ROM, let me know).
https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/2moqig/cm12_nonscheduled_builds_discussionupdate_thread/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/rom-cm12-daily-builds-gapps-t2937887
Build your own copy by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/guide-building-lollipop-oneplus-one-t2947949
Flashing: This guide is using TWRP. If you have a guide for using ClockworkMod or another custom recovery, let me know.
1. Reboot into recovery, ether by adb reboot recovery in terminal or by holding down the volume down button as you reboot.
2. Go into wipe, and swipe to factory reset. This erases your data but should not erase the "SD Card" partition.
3. Go back home if it doesn't automatically do so.
4. Go into reboot then choose Recovery.
5. After reboot, choose install and select the Lollipop ROM you downloaded.
6. Swipe to confirm flash.
7. After successful flash, go back home and back into install and flash both Google Apps and SuperSu.
8. Reboot device to system and you should have Lollipop.
Restoring Backup: Now that you're on Lollipop, you will want all your app settings and apps back.
If you used the Titanium Backup option, install Titanium Backup, and choose Restore missing apps with data.
Common Issues
Slow Boot: The solution people have used was to remove GPS and location services. This means you will not be able to use any map program to navigate anywhere.
Using ES File Explorer, go to /System/priv-app and remove com.Qualcomm.location
NFC and Bluetooth: There was some earlier ROMs that had these issues, go to a more recent ROM.
Enable on screen keys and disable hardware keys: Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032117 and flash this to disable the backlight on the buttons https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Byxnqyony5AybHFOeWJhMmczS09pd0JNaGFwWHFybHlYRmNJ/view credit @sd65
MultiROM: MultiROM does not support Lollipop as of right now. There has been success in installing Lollipop then using CM11(S) as a secondary ROM.
I will update this as I find other common issues.
Restore CM11S (Stock firmware)
Make sure you backup using the instructions above.
Download original firmware from https://cyngn.com/products/oneplusone/ and extract it.
In terminal, cd into the extracted folder.
On your phone, unplug it from your computer and hold down volume up and the power button until you see the fastboot icon, then connect to your computer and run the commands in the terminal window.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
If you wish to flash the original recovery:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You can also try following this guide if you trust their download.
Once you are restored, so long as you didn't flash userdata, you should still have your backup from Titanium Backup in the "SD Card".
This looks great thanks for the post!
I already know the answer but just asking to be sure JUST in case I'm wrong, if I do a NANDroid backup before wiping and flashing the Lollipop ROM just to try it out, will I be able to go back to CM11S just by restoring the backup?

I don't know much about NANDroid myself, but reading http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/NANDroid seems like it's just a clone of the flash in a file and can be restored using custom recoveries. So I would assume so, but not sure.

Another stupid question, but if I follow this guide to install lollipop alpha, when I decide to go back to stock can I just flash a brand new stock image for the latest CM11S version through twrp? Instead of using fastboot?

If you don't want the Google Apps (Includes Google Play), then you don't have to install it. I have heard people who didn't install it say that they had some weird issues such as when you put your screen to sleep it reboots or something.

Do you mean restoring? You are suppose to backup before installing Lollipop. If you accidentally mess up the process of restoring, you will have to start again by going into the app switcher and quitting Titanium Backup.

New around here and I'll pitch in as able but unfortunately start with a question...
I am running LineagesOS 14.1 now and would like to return to completely stock. I don't run Windows. Could someone point me in the right right direction to a howto that would work using only Linux as the PC OS? There are a plethora of various restore to stock articles on here but some have missing links to software and most involve using Windows, etc.
Thank you in advance.

Use my restore guide if you have an A2017G. If you have an U you could find the flashable files too, but idk.
It's basically: get into TWRP, wipe data, system, cache, dalvik, then flash raystef's bootstack zip, then his stocksystem zip, then the stock recovery img from one of those versions. Then go to the Reboot section and select reboot to recovery, you'll get into the stock one. Select factory reset, and you're done.
You didn't mention it but I guess you wanted to relock? If you do, I think this is enough, but you might want to reinstall TWRP with your PC and follow the "remove unlocked bootloader inscription" guide by raystef, which basically gives you fastboot back. Then flash the stock recovery img again

It is quite simple. You'll just need to do a bit if reading about adb and fastboot and make sure you follow these steps methodically. You do not need BLOD patch. You need the custom recovery version from the pixelexperience thread because of the way files are encrypted.
1 . Go to settings - system - about phone. Tap on build number 7 times until you see a pop up saying developer options enabled.
2. Go to settings - system - advanced - developer options. In there you want to enable oem unlocking and usb debugging.
3. Go to settings - security. Remove all device security so it's just swipe to unlock.
4. Follow this guide to setup google drivers, adb, fastboot and unlock the bootlader https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
5. Download latest rom version and twrp recovery version from pixelexperience thread to your pc and follow instruction in above guide for flashing twrp via fastboot.
6. Boot into your custom recovery (hold power + volume down while phone is off, use volume keys to select recovery, power for enter) ignore warning screen.
7. Go to backup. Select system, data and boot. Name it something like stock_todaysdate. Swipe to create backup. Reboot system.
8. Connect phone to pc. Through pc find twrp folder in phone, find your backup, copy to pc for safe keeping (this can restore your phone to how it was if anything goes wrong). Copy the rom zip you downloaded to your phone's internal storage.
9. Boot back into recovery. Go to wipe. Wipe everything except internal storage. Go to install. Locate the rom zip file and install it. Go to wipe again. Select format data and confirm.
10. Reboot system and wait for rom to boot this can take a while. Once booted leave your phone alone for a few minutes then you are good to go. If all is well make another backup and store on pc.

Yeah magisk is crazy the devs here at xda can do anything. They really are the best of the best. Everything I know I learned here on xda. I just read they are working on a new way to root at the kernel level so it's built in right from the when it's compiled. That's just crazy smart.

It depends on how the Dev set up the rom to be installed. Typically if the rom is .zip, you can install it with TWRP. Once you have downloaded your rom, copy it to your phone to a folder so you can find it easily. Reboot to TWRP and hit the Install button. Then navigate to your folder that has the rom in it and click on it. It should go through the install process and when its done, go back to the main TWRP menu and hit WIPE. If you are changing roms, you have to wipe your data or it won't boot up.
Also when you flash a rom, you are also flashing recovery from that rom and wiping out your TWRP install for that slot. You can re-install if you want.
Usually if your installing an after market rom, the dev will give you installation instructions. Most of the time they use Fastboot & ADB for these double slot phones since TWRP has not been available since its inception until lately.
