Moto G4 Plus : CMD : Invalid Boot State - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

I sold my Moto G4 Plus and actually bought it back from my buddy. In the Bootloader Unlocked message, its reading ID: bad key. I am unable to fastboot flash TWRP, and when i give ANY Bootloader Lock or Unlock commands it reads :

(bootloader) slot-suffixes: not found

(bootloader) invalid boot state

When i gave it to my buddy, it was rooted on 6.0 and when i got it back it was on 7.0.
I have a weird felling he ran an OTA and it F*CKED Sh*t up....
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,

after the official update from ....update in my device .......my device was struck in boot loop ...so i tries flashing the stock rom to repair that ....during flashing it giving the above mention error ........
Only other things I can think of is perhaps holding down your power button (for up to 2-3 minutes) to force a hard shutdown, and then try booting. Alternatively, hold down both the power and volume down key, see if you can boot into the bootloader (which it looks like you can, if you're trying to fastboot the stock ROM). If so, then try to boot into the stock recovery and try a cache wipe or a factory reset (the factory reset will obviously wipe your data).
If your device is under warranty (and you did not unlock your bootloader at any point), the service centre might be the best bet for you, as we can't do anything with a locked bootloader and you're unable to boot to get to OEM unlocking...
The new [Updated] blankflash file for Moto g4 plus [June security patch ]
Hello friends
here is the new [Updated] blankflash file for June security patch
i hope it will help you. here is complete guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/moto-g4-plus-hardbrick-solved-guide-t3657761
about how to install it.
if it's works for you please let me know:highfive:

Simple Moto G4 Question

Motorola G4 XT1625
Minor Problem: Phone will not start normally, only boots into Fastboot mode.
Minor Problem: Phone is oem Locked
Major Problem: I never went into "settings" on the phone and ENABLED OEM UNLOCKING.
Question: Is it possible to recover this phone or am I spinning my wheels here?
A little background. Not a developer, just trying to get my phone running again. I have installed Moto tools on my PC, requested and received an unlock code, connected to the phone and can send commands via command line. I understand what the issue is, and hindsight says I should have enabled the phone for development on day 1 based on the risk of an OTA update failure. I've read nearly every forum post regarding this topic, just haven't got clear answer as to if this phone is recoverable.
Oh, and if this looks slightly familiar, its a repost of a thread I started in the general Android help and Q&A forum. I received an email from Brandon, chief admin, letting me know I may receive more info from the MOTO G4 forum.
Thanks in advance.....
Hello there, if the phone boots only into fastboot mode it may be that Stock OS has been wiped, therefore having no OS would reboot the phone every time. When you unlock the bootloader the user data gets erased and the phone goes into factory reset, however, you didn't have OEM unlocked. I don't see if it should be an issue right now.
What I would do is trying to find the stock ROM of your G4, and re flashing it. What I also would do is just try to flash recovery thru fastboot and see if it works.
Quick question, do you see the unlocked boot loader message when you boot your phone ? (this phone cannot be trusted blah blah)
Let me know if it works either way. I don't think OEM lock should be an issue if the system partition has been erased. You got an unlock code and used it.
Good luck!
If you can remember what firmware you had before attempting to unlock your bootloader, you can find a lot of the athene firmwares here: https://androidfilehost.com/?a=show&w=files&flid=72578
For US Nougat devices, I recall the latest build is NPJ25.93-14.7 (though there are reports that there is a newer build being deployed).
That's an odd issue to experience though - can you remember what happened to your device? Was there a factory reset or an erase command issued? A locked bootloader normally should not permit you to erase the system.
With OEM unlocking disabled, you likely would have been blocked from being able to unlock your bootloader. However, by requesting the unlock key, Motorola has a record of the request against your IMEI, so may refuse to service your device under the now voided warranty. Perhaps the best bet at this moment in time is to try a stock ROM reflash.
If you can't remember what stock firmware you had, or want a confirmation, then I'd like to see your getvar info please:
1)Boot to bootloader, connect your device to your computer.
2)In the ADB terminal, type 'fastboot getvar all' without quotes, press Enter on your keyboard.
3)Paste the output into a post here, you may wish to remove your IMEI. This output should be a list of your device variables and give us an idea of the state of your device.
Thank you both for help here.
Quick question, do you see the unlocked boot loader message when you boot your phone ? (this phone cannot be trusted blah blah)
No, the phone will not boot in any mode, factory, recovery, etc, and comes back with
Start Up Failed:
AP Fastboot Flash Mode (secure)
Fastboot reason : UTAG "bootmode" configured as fastboot
ERROR: Failed to pass validation, backup to fastboot
Boot up failed
As to the pre-failure status, the phone was fine after the last upgrade, I believe in late December or early January. I also noticed that the internal storage was running thin so I uninstalled some unused apps as well as using the storage/apps/ clear cache method to get the unused space back to about 3GB unused. No problems after that either. The problem started with the phone doing one of two things, it either shut down such that I had to hold the power button down for 30 sec to start/reboot the phone, or would it simply do a full reboot on its own. The period between these events varied, sometimes a matter of minutes, other times a day or two. It did this for about a week until it booted into the mode I described earlier.
The following is the requested data from the phone,

I did go to the AndroidFileHost site and downloaded what looked like the most recent Athene set of files, based on its upload date and version number.

Thanks for the getvar info. That suggests you have the NPJ25.93-14.7-3 US retail firmware (December 2017 security patch). Unfortunately, we don't have that firmware leaked to us yet - hopefully someone can capture the correct firmware from Motorola.
As you've correctly surmised, the firmwares we've got are too old for your device, and particularly as your bootloader is locked, the locked bootloader is rejecting any firmware that is older than the current version (as locked bootloaders do not permit firmware downgrades).
You could refer your device to a service centre and see if they can flash the latest firmware onto your device (and hopefully not charge you), or wait for a retail NPJ25.93-14.7-3 stock firmware to 'unofficially' appear.
Thanks Echo92, the help has been greatly appreciated.
It was an Ah Ha moment with your last message when I realized I could see the version of firmware from the getvar info, like I said I'm coming up the learning curve, just been a slow climb.......
I have contacted Motorola service about the phone, the response I received was that the G4 is not repairable, I could purchase a replacement for $90, which when you think about it is not a bad deal, but they only offered it with a 90 day warranty. I did not specifically ask about them simply re-flashing it, so I'm not sure if that was an option or not.
In case your curious, I've since replaced the phone, different brand, but will keep this one as a backup if I can eventually get the firmware re-loaded (hoping that it is not hardware related problem)
Thanks again

Which blankflash files are you using that are causing this error, the September 2017 or June 2017 ones?
You may wish to try the December 2017 GPT and bootloader files : https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IfAX7v94ooB5wS7KTJGNYfQ2kXkHxP80
If the December 2017 GPT/bootloader files work, then you will want to re-flash the NPJS25.93-14-13 stock ROM (mainly for Brazil, India, EU and UK users, may flash onto other region's devices) to fully repair: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138

Can I ask what steps you've tried when unlocking the bootloader please? Have you followed this guide, https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67031801&postcount=2 and if so, what errors are you getting? If you could, please post a screenshot of the error or the text of the error.
Is your device bought from a carrier (and thus carrier locked) or an Amazon Prime device or was it from Amazon/a retailer?
Could we see your getvar info please?
1)Boot your device to the bootloader. Connect via USB to your computer.
2)In the ADB terminal, type 'fastboot getvar all' without quotes. Press Enter.
3)Paste the output into a post here please. You may wish to remove IMEI numbers.

Okay, was it an Amazon Prime device (with the adverts on the lock screen) or just a retail device sold by Amazon?
As far as I know, the Amazon Prime version cannot have its bootloader unlocked, and Motorola won't issue an unlock key for such devices. You'll know if it's an Amazon Prime device from adverts on the lockscreen and if you go to Settings>About Phone, under software channel it'll say AMZ. On retail devices it'll be retin (retail India) or reteu (retail Europe) etc.

Can you try with the minimal ADB tools as well? https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 and with the minimal ADB tools, use 'fastboot oem get_unlock_data' without quotes.
Have you had your motherboard changed? If not, and you cannot get the unlock data, then you may have to post to the official Lenovo/Motorola forums: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/230/thread-id/2654/page/1
As requested in the first post of that page, please provide the getvar info and the result of the get_unlock_data (whatever it is) in your post, else the admin may not forward your request to the internal team.

Hmm, you have a CID of 0x0000 which should be unlockable. I wonder what's happened to your ro.carrier though, that should read retin rather than unknown.
I'd post on the Lenovo/Motorola forum I linked above with the information requested in the opening post of that thread. By the way, you can copy by right clicking in the menubar of the command line window then going to Edit>Copy. Saves you having to take a screenshot and they'll want a text entry.

Did you post on the Lenovo/Motorola official forum thread as directed? They are the only ones likely to help you at this stage.
I see one new report from an athene device in the last few days, but that device is from Argentina. As an aside, that report has no IMEI, which may slow down the help to get their code.
Please post in the Bootloader Unlock thread on the Motorola/Lenevo forum, with the getvar info (with IMEI) and the result of the get_unlock_data as directed. They then should forward the message to their internal teams and look for an email response in 48-72 hours (or 2-3 working days).

Hmm, what have you tried so far? Can you describe what happened before experiencing this error?
Looking through your image, though it's quite low resolution, I see no entries in your firmware version or kernel or baseband, which suggests you used the blankflash at some point?

I had Resurrection Remix Oreo on the device. I was just using the phone casually with vanced youtube running on the background and facebook messenger too. Suddenly it froze so i tried to restart it but no response and then after some time the screen went blank. When plugged in to charge, the led glowed and screen was plain blank without the screen lighting up. So I googled and found the following thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/help/solved-unbrick-hard-bricked-dead-t3585016
Followed the procedure then the screen was up again. The screen i got after doing this is below. Sorry for the low resolution hope you can understand it.

IMEI is gone. It shows all 0s in the imei field. Tried flashing stock recovery, custom recovery, twrp no luck. The device is recognized as "fastboot athene_16mp S" when connected to pc.
Hope you can help.

That isn't your actual fastboot mode. fastboot getvar will not show proper details. I too had tried and got imei as multiple 0 with "fastboot getvar", also had seen a lot of other things missing too.
Download and flash the latest stock nougat from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138
Before flashing stock rom, you will need to flash latest "bootloader" and "gpt". First flash bootloader and gpt and then reboot to bootloader (fastboot reboot bootloader).
Now you will have your original bootloader back. Now you can flash stock nougat rom and everything will be back to normal.
I hope you have not upgraded to soak test oreo by "locked bootloader" method because if you did then you will have to wait till fastboot rom for oreo comes out or ask someone who is on soak test oreo to provide their bootloader and gpt partitions (if they upgrades by locked bootloader method), as you wouldn't be able to flash nougat bootloader and gpt partitions.
i have a similar problem on my xt1643 as it is only booting to the locked bootloader, and tried all the gpt.bin till april 2018 while all the others gave the downgrade error, april 2018 gave the following error.

Thanks for that. A few things I've noted:
1)I'm not sure what's happened to your device, and perhaps you can elaborate on if anything happened before, but the CID=0xDEAD and the odd serial number (unless you changed that) and no presence of the iswarrantyvoid parameter is concerning. Did you try to restore a backup or give your device to a JTAG service, or did you use a blankflash?
2)Your radio baseband version is reporting DFLT_FSG as opposed to BRAZIL, so you may have no network access, though that might be immaterial at this point.
3)Which firmware are you trying to flash at the moment that is giving you the validation errors (e.g. Image boot failed validation?) Is it the NPJS25.93-14-13 Dec 2017 firmware? I note your device is running Blur_Version.25.226.3.athene.retail.pt.BR whereas the stock ROM on XDA is Blur_Version.25.226.3.athene.retail.en.US but I don't know if the different languages are that significant. Verify that you're flashing the NPJS25.93-14-13 stock ROM.
If you are flashing the NPJS25.93-14-13 stock ROM on XDA, I'm concerned that only an expensive motherboard replacement may fix the issues. However, please answer the questions I've asked so we have more information to help you. You can type your response in Portuguese or your native language and then use Google Translate or your favourite translator to translate your response into English if you so choose.

1) I was in the stock rom of December with elemental kernel x to get root with magisk and was without network because of the baseband and I looked in the forum something about there I tried to transfer some files of the 1643 xt was when the hard brick occurred I used the recent blankflash and able to revive the bootloader but when trying to flash again the stock of December gave error plus the boot loader went back to normal as in the attached image

Hmm, what files did you try to transfer, was it the hw, fsg and modem partitions, and did you transfer them to the correct partitions? Those commands are very powerful and will not alert you if the incorrect partition is overwritten.
I'm guessing by the screenshot you're showing that your bootloader screen is similar, as that bootloader screen is for Osprey devices (Moto G 2015). It should be like that as you've flashed the bootloader from the stock NPJS25.93-14-13 ROM, just with athene (Moto G4) details.
How did you lose network in the first place, was it after flashing firmware?
If you can, I'd doublecheck if your bootloader is unlocked and try unlocking your bootloader (which will erase your information), as looking through your flash results, it looks like your bootloader is rejecting your flashing. NPJS25.93-14-13 should not give you pre-flash validation errors on a G4 Plus as that's the current firmware we have, unless you've flashed a different December 2017 build before or received an OTA update newer than December 2017.
If unlocking the bootloader doesn't work or doesn't resolve not being able to flash, then we may have to begin considering an expensive service repair.

If your bootloader is locked, then having TWRP and ElementalX on your device will cause your device to fail to boot. A locked bootloader, especially under Nougat, is quite strictly enforced, and is expecting stock recovery and stock kernel, no modifications whatsoever.
The stock ROM flash should be overwriting both partitions with the stock firmware, but as you're not bypassing the strict verification checks, then you can try to unlock your bootloader again and try to re-flash. Alternatively, if you unlock, you may be able to boot if there's still TWRP and ElementalX on your device. Your warranty is voided anyway as you'd have unlocked your bootloader in the past to flash TWRP and ElementalX.
If that doesn't work, it may suggest the flash memory or another hardware fault is present, which may require a motherboard replaement.

That's not good - can you boot into the system? If so, you can go to Settings>About Phone, tap the build 7 times, then go back one menu, access Developer Options and then toggle OEM unlocking, which should then let you unlock your bootloader.
If you've re-locked your bootloader and you cannot boot, then unfortunately you may have to consider a motherboard replacement (expensive) or put the money towards a new device. I think we don't have the means to bypass the bootloader security lock if you cannot boot into the system.

if I was in hard brick but can revive only the bootloader and the system can not activate these options so there is no way to flip the bootloader and with the bootloader locked I can not flashear a previous ROM nor the stock of December pq was with the elemental kernel x of January 25th so I have to wait for a security patch update to flash over

Yeah, hopefully the February 2018 security patch ROM should be on its way soon. If that doesn't fix things then you may have to visit a service centre.

Unfortunately a hard brick in this manner seems to be quite hard to fix, especially if you cannot flash the stock ROM (with a locked bootloader failing validation). However, we'll have to see if the newer stock ROM resolves this.

Honestly no idea - we've not even seen the OTA update for the February 2018 security update, just the patch notes. Could be this month, could be next month. Furthermore, that still relies on someone capturing and uploading the stock ROM firmware with that patch to Android FileHost or somewhere.

Does this mean the Moto G4 Plus BootLoader is Still Locked?
