Is this something you can change with your ambient display being on or off?

Created it in issue tracker still star it

The delay was deliberately increased to alleviate screen flickering issues... I don't think they will do anything about it

Not true. Have always had Ambient Display on, and I am experiencing the fingerprint unlock lag.

Ok so if the fingerprint is slow with ambient display on then this is new. So if you update you might as well turn ambient display off as I have always done to save battery. Now that the fingerprint is slow with ambient display on or off it really doesn't matter now. You have a slow fingerprint

the fingerprint sensor is 1 sec slower with both ambient display on&off.
Very very annoying

You can thank google & lg for that one!

They first introduced this in P, so I have had it for awhile. One work around is to tap the power button first, that turns on the display and then the fingerprint works faster. It feels smoother and faster. I got used to doing that pretty quickly and it seems natural now.

Agreed. However, I hate it when google takes one of the best features of our devices, makes it not as good as when we first got it, then calls it new and improved because they used a new lg panel. Oh well, that's progress.......I guess! ??

For me, even unlocking screen with power button takes longer now. Wtf...

The same delay is there for me when using the fingerprint sensor or when pressing the power button. While I've read about others having a similar issue before, I never had the delay prior to the June security update. Turning on ambient display does decrease the delay, but I'm not an ambient display user.

This does work, but it's not something I'm going to do. Positioning my hand to hit them both in succession is a little awkward, and takes more time than just waiting for the delay. I'm sure I'd get faster at it over time.
Thanks for the heads up on one other workaround though.

I'm starting to miss my oneplus 5t...

For once being left handed is helping me. Grabbing it with my left hand my thumb is already by the power button.

it feels same to me, maybe being old helps.........

Read through the Flash Kernel thread. There has been some good discussion about it including some technical info. Yes it's intentional, and Google prolly won't do anything about changing it. Maybe down the road a dev will bake in the removal of the delay into a custom Rom and or kernel.

Turning AOD on definetly unlocks and wake the screen instantly, although previously i had it disabled.
Cheers ?

I have never had screen flickering issues before. Is there a video on what it looks like?

[DISCUSS] Screen brightness sensor a joke!!

Sending this straight back, I cannot believe there is no option to disable auto brightness settings on this heap of ++++.
It has got a mind of its own and is extremely annoying to suddenly see the screen get dim and bright every 5 seconds without any change in actual lighting condition...it makes the phone almost unusable.
Hope someone can make a hack for this soon.

Yes, totally a reason to send it back, software bug on a phone with a unlockable bootloader. Hope your next one doesn't have any real issues
Maybe this was the software bug vodafone was saying?

sure you can't find a solution? It must be somewhere in the settings (I'm no android expert though).
It's not a "software bug", it's SE dictating to us that in order for the paltry battery to last a day, we need to use it in the dark, or disco mode!

... unless the sensor it's self is dicked, then it can be fixed in software, even if it is dicked, it can be completely disabled.... just cool your jets.
well i report no such shinanigans happening on my phone! i can see the light sensor in action when i cover it with my thumb, it works really well and the gradient of fading and lighting up is the best i've seen on any phone so far! i dont notice it when using it normally.
you must have a faulty one....

Can't you install brightness level from the market to controll the auto brightness ?
Wanna control your brightness levels quick and easy? I use a very slick widget called Dazzle. It has every option you can think of to control just about everything on your phone. Give it a try.

I don't seem to have auto-brightness, do have a slide in the settings to ste brightness though, on highest I can easely see in the sun and it hurts in the dark, on the lowest settings it's hard to read at night.
A Dutch review actually mentioned a lack of auto-brightness as one of the downsides to this device.

It does have Auto Brightness as if you put a finger over the light sensor the phone screens dim.
The phone had an update pending the day I purchased it so most of the reviews I have seen are out of date. This phone is excellent at playing games.

I hear that. In love with my Xperia Play.
Guys can someone tell me. A lot of reviews say that the screen is very dim even on max setting and a lot of reviews say the exact opposite. So what is it?
Mine is perfect in the sun. I'm starting to think there are 2 types of screens involved, anyway to check what screen you have without opening the device up?
Screen brightness is ok for me, but just remarked the display have some ghosting issues. Slide beetween programs screens and observe carrefully the icons.... with red "Adresse" one this is very visible. i can't belive sony use a high response time display on a gamer device.

Slow sensor..

Anyone else have problems with it takes litle long for the sensor to show phone again after have talk? Mine is quite slow when i talk and say i have to use the pad as i talk then it tskes seconds for it to show.

Why is a 0.5-second delay a problem? I like that I actually have to look at the phone before I press some weird on-screen setting that I don't know
I hope someone would find a fix for this, I come from an iPhone and the sensor was way more sensitive.
However, for me, it's not a major issue.

i have few seconds delay, so i have to hint people nearby don't talk anything yet before it really hang up, as annoying as the wake up lag i have to wait few seconds just to see the clock.
Imho it's a feature, not a bug. If the sensor is too sensitive, it turns the screen on even with slight movements of the phone during the call. HD2 had exactly this problem, and I hanged up the call with my ear several times. So I'm actually happy that SGS2 waits a bit longer to clear things up.
Also if you just want to hang up, you can use power button for that (without turning the phone off), there is a setting for it in well .. settings.
Yuuuuup definately a problem! No one cant say otherwise. Annoying as well :[email protected]

note 3 screen auto dimming

adaptive display off
reading mode off
brightness manual
smart screen off
brightness level set to 90% or so
and my screen auto dimm for no reason playing PVZ or any other game is very annoying to the point of stop playing
I did some reading on att note 3 forums and they said this is implemented on the Kernel itself so if we can get full unlock perhaps we can use a custom kerlel to fix this BIG PROBLEM

Ahh, gotcha.
I've never experienced any problems with the screen dimming when I'm using it (even playing games). But I like to use Smart Stay (works great for me) and I like my brightness at 100% all the time, so it's a little different scenario, I guess.

I've seen it and been looking for where to turn it off. Was going to post about it, so glad you did. It's very annoying and send to happen at odd times in pretty much any app.
Now here's another one for you. Have you noticed when you pick up your phone that it will vibrate twice? I can't tell what I'd doing it, so it may be a system thing.

Like how LG probably hates me every chance I get I talk **** especially about their LowGrade ****uition
Android product ...LG is byfar the worst android creators out there and should just stick
To making ****ty appliance or better yet just stay out of the electronic world all 2gthr IMO...
But back to the subject at hand it seems its when a lot of processes are going that it dims (CRASHES)
Try keeping an auto task killer app running to kill unwanted tasks as they pop up...
It works but not for too long. it would seem the 2G of RAM is not enough for the quadcore
maybe 3G would have worked better.
Solution
Kinda late with an answer but I figured out why my note 4 was doing that out of the bloom. Turns out I had an option checked for my screen brightness to adjust based on the image that was on my display. Just go to Settings, Display, then uncheck the Auto Adjust Screen Tone. That should fix it. ☺

[TRICK] Double tap to wake, without tapping.

Hey guys, first post on the nexus 6 forums, just got mine a week ago. I'm sure many of you miss the notification light that most of us are use to. I know we can use the app lightflow to get the hidden led to light up but that is not what this is about. I for one miss double tap to wake on my G3 and Oneplus but there is another way and most of you already have the option activated. This magical setting, Ambient Display.
Instead of picking up the phone like a good boy or girl from your desk to check if there are notifications waiting, simply tap either the extreme right or left of the phone and this act will shake it causing the sensors to think you moved the phone and the ambient display will knock on. For those who don't follow, since the nexus 6 back is shaped like a U or curved tapping either side would cause the phone to rock.
That's it, just something I noticed and I did not see it mentioned anywhere, give it a try, no more picking up phones to check the time. Enjoy.
or, get root and use the real double tap to wake. you can get it working by app, or by kernel of choice. its actually included in the code for the n6, but not enabled. you can easily enable it, if you have root. besides, ambient display uses battery, and wakes often in the pocket(and gets really annoying).

Ambient display doesn't wake up in my pocket. Chroma pocket mode. ? Still has to poll the prox sensor though, but I'm sure this would use less battery than the display waking up.

Does double-tap-to-wake work reliably in 5.1.1? I tried it ages ago with 5.0.1 and found it often would require several extra taps to wake it up. I might root and try again if it works better now...
Oh! I didn't know this. I was missing that feature and I had it all the time.
Thanks for the tip.
On Chroma, Doubletap to wake using the wakegestures.apk is about 85-90% reliable in waking on the first doubletap, its not too big a deal.
Double tap to sleep is 100% reliable first time for me just like a g2-g3.
Nova launcher + screen lock and off app works amazing.

No it wasn't. Moto X's along with their Droid variants use IR sensors in the corners to detect movement. Thats not how Ambient Display works (which is quite a bit inferior).

Does this kill the natural ambient notification? I would actually prefer both. Sometimes I just want to see if there are notifications without opening the display. Then would want to use the knock when I'm actually planning on using the phone

Works well in my experience (on 5.1.1). I do notice that it works most of the time if I'm holding the phone at an angle, but it works every time if I hold the phone vertically. That was also the case with motion launch on my m8 so maybe it's by design to avoid accidental waking? I suspect people who don't find it working could be having the same issue.

It shouldn't make a difference. Battery optimization shouldn't affects apps that are always in use, like biometrics...

For me this setting didn't change anything. Sad, but fingerprint is still pretty bad... Sometimes it's fast, the other time it needs 5 attempts. It is so inconsistent, it really gets frustrating on a daily basis...

I miss the physical fingerprint sensors. Placed along the back was a perfect spot as you could tap it as you're pulling your phone out. They were super accurate and very fast. The speed and convenience still win over any in-display sensor or face unlock.

no kidding. i remember when samsung was bragging about how the fingerprint sensor was so superior than anything before with the new S10 and how it could even work with wet hands. hahaha. riiiight. my hands get slightly wet or dirty and good freaking luck getting that damn thing to recognize your print. my S7 was godlike compared to S10 and definitely S20. the S20 sensor is pure trash. can't believe i fell for the damn marketing on this phone. its a sub par phone that i wouldn't even call flagship. never again samsung.

I totally agree but what we have to remember is this new in dislpay fingerprint sensor is relatively new tech, what the past maybe year and a half? It will def get better... The old style fingerprint sensors (the physycal/own module) had a lot of time to get to where they are now.
