I am sure anyone who has had experience of it will agree slingplayer is one of the best applications for a pocket pc.
However on the Ameo, which is the variant I have, its performance is a lot to be desired. Whether I use it on the wifi or HSDPA it seems to be jerky all the time (not a very good user experience). The stats say the 300kb/s to 400kb/s is being achieved but the frame rate doesn’t go much above 10 (is it the darn video driver again?). The settings i use are:
Enable slingstream optimization
High action
video resolution : 320 by 240
audio : mono low
Managed to borrow a dell Axim X51 (qVGA screen, 412Mhz version) the other day, and tested its slingplayer performance and frankly was amazed at the difference. It was managing 30 frames per second and was super smooth whether portrait or landscape (same slingplayer settings by the way).
Ameo has the same processor as the Dell only faster, different graphics chip though.
Is it because Dell has a proper video driver or the fact that it is only a qVGA resolution i.e. 4 times less area to display. You will note that best performing devices as far as SPB graphics benchmark are qVGA.
I have read on threads people being pretty happy with slingplayer performance but that’s a subjective statement.
Could people who have used slingplayer on any variant of the athena, i.e. advantage X7500, X7501, dopod 1000 etc. state the frame rate and the bandwidth they are achieving (either cellular or wifi connection) so we can narrow down the problem.
1) Lack of proper ATI driver on all or some of the athena variants.
2) VGA screen taxing the processor too much (shouldn't be as the slingplayer application is still trying to display qVGA resolution, assuming 4 pixels displaying the same image is less strenuous on the processor than displaying 4 distinct images)
3) Some other reason such as splingplayer not optimized for the ATI chip?
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated
I tried this last night and I am getting 10-15fps whether connected to my wi-fi network or via 3G and my vid is jerky as well. Disappointing but hopefully will get better... I am using the default settings (slingstream optimization and medium action).
EDIT: FWIW, the Axim x51v is VGA 640x480...
EDIT2: My bandwidth is 200-300kbps whether connected to wi-fi or 3G.
assuming you guys are using win media player to play the videos, you are probably running into the same issues I had trying to stream from ORB to my ameo, the fix was to use the windows mobile 5 (windows media video 9) codecs for windows media player ! simply unpack the attached files and copy into your windows folder then reboot.
apperntly there is an issue with the Windows media video 10 codecs supplied with win mobile 6 !

The slingplayer mobile application is self contained (no WMP involved) and plays live streaming video only...
same problem here

The reason is that SlingMobile is using DirectDraw. The DDraw API on WM is slooooow. Thats the reason players like PocketTV or TCPMP went out of their way to code driver support for GPUs
The X7501 def has the ATI Imageon drivers there (I pointed this out on another thread), but it doesnt matter much. DDRaw+ATI=slow. DDRaw+Intel 2700=not TOO bad (hence the X51V working)
Basically, every PPC ever made from the Axim X51V forward should have had the Intel 2700. That they didnt has crippled the platform when it comes to video. The Imageon has potential, but ATI seems very hard to work with and getting it optimized is NOT easy.
The Marvell may save this situation if devs can start to take full advantage of WMMX2. Early reports show that with straight DDRaw, the Marvell proc alone is STILL not up to Intel 2700 standards, but Id bet that with direct WMMX2 enhanced code, it would be.
you can increase the buffer, but you have to do it in the registry, once you change it you cant go back into settings and change anything without changing the buffer back to 4 seconds
hklm\software\sling media\slingplayer\player
precharge duration = 10000
the 10000 in milliseconds
Thanks for the comments.
So it seems that the only hope is if an update of the slingplayer software decides to use the ATI Imageon driver.
Just to clear something up, the Dell I used was a X51 (320 by 240) and NOT a X51V (which is 640 by 480)
Is it possible to get the slingplayer to use the ATI driver using a registry tweak??
I would assume if they had developed ATI support they'd expose it. It may be possible that there is some undocumented dedicated support for the Imageon, but I havent seen anything.
I have just got my slingbox this week and I liked the idea of been able to watch my sky+ recordings, but playback via 3g is watchable but only about 15 fps , there is no improvement using wifi? However my cctv camera works smooth and looks great- possibly becouse its a black and white camera?
As a previous poster said orb works very good playing back full size divx from my home pc via either wmp or tcpmp without problems over 3g? but orb requires the pc to be on all the time, which is why I got the slingbox.
I just hope someone with more skill and knowlage than myself can sort a solution
Sling has released a new version of their mobile player that uses GDI instead of DirectDraw. Has anyone tried this on their Athena to see if it improves performance?

I tried GDI but the frame rate dropped off significantly.
There are 3 major problems with SlingPlayer on the Athena. As said before, it does not use the ATI video driver. But also the maximum supported resolution is only 320x240 and the maximum bit rate is only 600kbs. So it's never going to look as good as TCPMP for example.
The best setting to change to make SlingPlayer watchable is to specifically set the video bit rate to 600kbs. Unless this is done, the SlingPlayer never seems to use more than 300kbs and the result is very poor video. With 600kbs bit rate and 320x240 resolution, I get about 15fps on average. If I drop the resolution to 224x176 I get nearly 30fps.
My Slingbox video stream is 77kbs
I hope any body can help me with this issue.
I have my slingbox set in NY,USA, and I'm now in Bahrain my internet provider speed is 2mbs download/ 512 kbs, and the internet provider in NY is verizon at 6mbs/ 760kbs upload.
However, every time I start my sling box on my laptop (Dell D610), the video optimization start at 600-700 kbs and end up in 2 min in 77 kbs and stop there.
I don't know, if this is something has to do with the setup or what exactly...?
Can any body help me with that??
Thanks
Are you saying you have a problem using your slingbox on your Athena or your laptop? If your laptop then you are posting in the wrong place!
anyone figure out the optimal settings for our athena's to get buffering/playback more manageable?
Is there a way for the transformer to play 1080p without stuttering? I know the hardware is pretty capable yet how come it cant even play 1080p without stuttering? The blackberry playbook plays 1080p flawlessly.
Click on the search box, type in flash video and read any of the dozens of threads on the subject.
If you would like short answers though - No and because it's a new OS with unoptimized software for the hardware in question which MAY eventually be up to the task of playing 1080p.
Also... you know there aren't that many dots on your screen right?

Hi
I have been on here a few times complaining about flash performance. Through the You Tube Application I did manage to stream both the Lord of the Rings and Batman Dark Knight trailers at 1080p with smooth performance. Looks brilliant.
Through the web browser I cant even stream 720p. Somtimes the You tube application struggles and buffers even with my 30 mb connection. Wonder if this is somthing to do with the network speed rather than it being the hardware and if somthing is off slightly be it with your wireless connection speed or the you tube network it falls over?

Adobe has this in their flash player 10.3 description, this should answer your question.
"For optimal performance and the most immersive experience on Android 3.1 tablets, view Flash Player delivered content in full screen by using the menu buttons provided by content providers, or by tapping content once followed by a long tap to bring down a button in the upper left corner which can be tapped to enable full screen mode."
What don't I know about this?
I just played several 1080p HD vids on my TF without stuttering...no problem.
Sorry if this was posted up already but I got an email for the Samsung update but would like to know how big of a difference it makes
+ Most actions feel smoother
+ Browser is much more stable
+ Lag and wonky cursor fixed when typing in web forms
+ Numerous small fixes and improvements throughout
- 720p high profile playback is broken
- New color scheme takes awhile to get used to
The pros outweigh the cons for me, unless a clever developer manages to get 3.2 running on the tab I don't think I'll be going back to stock HC.
I was at my local mall yesterday and saw the touch screen buttons look uglier to me I didn't get to play with there was a long line but everything looks ok but if you say its more stable ill take it I'm getting tired of how it runs slow at certain points
My thoughts: This isn't your Granny's Android tablet any more!
- Printing (but only to Samsung printers )
- Screen Capture button.
- Tilt the tablet to zoom in and out in gallery and browser.
- New notification sound.
- New graphic aesthetics in major system apps, including Settings.
- Hardware shortcut ribbon in bottom-corner pop-up. Wi-Fi, Notifications, GPS, Sound, Auto-rotate, Bluetooth, and Flight Mode.
- Graphic current screen indicator on home pages. Tap on dots to go directly to any page.
- Bottom dock bar, pops up with Task manager, Calendar, World clock, Pen memo, Calculator, and Music Player shortcuts on any screen.
- Connect to Kies via WiFi. (Kies update available)
- Move icons to other pages by tilting the tablet to pan while holding an icon.
- Videos app, Movies in Market, Samsung Apps app, Photo editor, Alarm app, and probably a few more.
Liking it so far
+System video player properly recognizes orientation! This was such an annoyance when using Samsung book cover with tilt!
+Browser annoyances fixed
+Finally an easy to access calculator
-H264 720p high profile broken. Verified in system video player as well as mobo player
-Youtube still does not recognize orientation in full screen playback.
1. More video formats now play in the video player.
2. Good news abou the UI: The GUI is more "fat finger" friendly. Bad News: As a result it's not very pretty. However, I prefer function over form so that's OK.
3. There's a pop-up app button in the bottom ribbon. Unfortunately, the only app there that I find useful is Task Manager. Too bad we can't change the apps to make it more useful.
4. Screen shot is nice. But, really, how often does one need a screen shot?
5. They changed the appearance of the buttons on the bottom left corner of the screen. The back arrow is now an arrow. However, the home button still looks like an upward pointing arrow. Too bad they didn't make that better.
6. The browser does seem snappier.
7. The market now includes Movies. Although I haven't seen anything under $3.99. I'm not going to pay $3.99 to watch something on a 10.1" screen. I'm guessing they're aiming at those who have purchased the HDMI adapter.
8. The "busy" icon is no longer two circles spinning in opposite directions. It's more like an analog clock with a spinning hour hand.
9. There's a File Manager. It's called "My Files." Took me a while to figure that out. It has a polished look. Not sure of all its capabilities yet.
10. I really like the buttons at the top of the UI to get to any 5 screens quickly. However, 5 seems to still be the limit. With direct navigation it would have been nice to have the ability to create more screens ala GO Launcer EX.
11. Calender. They did some horrible things to the calendar. I'm a graphical person. I need to see appointments in a graphical way where a longer appointment takes up more space on a calendar. I detest the Agenda style. They took that away in the week view. Agenda style only there. Daily view shows appointments graphically, but not weekly.
Additionally, the color scheme is abysmal. Violet and white. Who in their right mind chooses such a hideous color scheme without giving us the ability to change it? This just solidifies my choice of using Touchdown instead. So long Calendar.
11. When looking at the Apps screen they've taken away the "ghosted" outline of apps on the right column. That was a cool visual cue that there were more apps on the right. I liked it and could see that it was useful when new users used the Tab.
12. Live wallpapers are still as useless as they were before. It grinds the home pages to a halt. No improvement there.
13. There are more "settings" including a Power Saving panel, a Motion Settings panel, and more details about the Tab.
Anyone know if you can change out the icons/apps on the pop-up dock? There is a better calculator available for example, and I'd prefer to use the Google Music beta app instead of the default one Samsung provided.
So far, in my 10 minutes of using this update, I'm not too happy. More apps I don't use were installed and cannot be removed without rooting (My Files, Pen memo, Memo, Amazon Kindle/MP3, Words, Video). The pop-up task bar has changed. The new buttons to run wifi/gps/etc on and off is neat, but it's ugly and some functionality has been lost from that pop up like clicking on wifi no longer brings you right into wifi settings, which I find extremely annoying. The new calendar app is not as good as the old one, which is important for me. I want the old color scheme back. So far, I'd actually like to roll back. None of these quirks were reported in any reviews of the new TW update I read.
Graphics performance has been improved quite a bit as evidenced in Quadrant and a few games I've tested. The annoying gyro drift I was experiencing in NOVA 2 has also been fixed. The game actually plays quite well now, not as good as ipad2 though
Hoping we'll see an OC Kernel soon, should boost performance a bit more.

I gotta say that Swype is fantastic. I've tried to use Swype on my phone several times over the last year or so but never could get used to it. Somehow, on the Tab, it's a much better experience. Also, it's nice to be able to move the Swype keyboard to a different position making it easy for both leftys and rightys.

720p High Profile H264 is broken. There are many variations of H264:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC#Profiles
MKV is a container that can contain numerous formats of video and audio.
Yes, depending on the 720p H264 file you get, it may work as long as was encoded less then High Profile.
Why would anyone want high profile? It gives the greatest quality per bit of data at the expense of crunching power, which the tegra2 has. Somehow this update disabled high profile recognition for hw decode, no 3rd party player can fix this.

I've got a TV that is on my network. Curious how that would work. I could see it working if it was running Google TV, but mine is an LG "Smart" tv. It plays videos off my shared network drive, but watching content from the TV on another device isn't something I've ever seen done. Certainly going to mess with it. Will report If I have any success.

Should we have debugging check or not for connecting via USB to transfer files? I had a problem initially connecting, I had Kies open and it said that it is not supported or cant connect. I then closed Kies, unchecked debugging, then it connected and an expolorer window opened to view files.
I tried connecting again and my tab did not show up in my computer as a drive. Rebooted tab, checked and unchecked debugging and then it worked.
Very strange, so I am not sure what I did wrong or if Kies was the problem.

Very easily done using DLNA. The Galaxy S 1/2 devices have an app called AllShare that enables this functionality. It allows you to watch content on DLNA devices. For example, I can watch video captures on my phone on my DLNA enabled TV and vice versa.
We are still waiting on Samsung to release an AllShare app for the Tab though.
It would be nice to use this for Netflix and Youtube. I also want to stream video files from my PC to the Ouya via PS3 Media Server or something similar. I imagine Netflix and Youtube will be easy, but what about streaming from the PC?
I'm interested too, though more of what kind of media it's able to play. My camera takes 'AVCHD 2.0' video, which is 1080p/60, which is 1080p video at 60 frames per second at a bitrate of about 28mbps.
I'm wondering if the OUYA would be capable of playing this. The PS3 apparently isn't, since it stutters when I tried to play the video's in it. It would be nice if the OUYA could, but I have my doubts.
Wouldn't worry about media playback or streaming.
http://xbmc.org/natethomas/2012/08/07/xbmc-and-ouya-oh-yeah/
XBMC is the #1 reason I got the OUYA
The Tegra 3 devices I have used have all been able to play 1080p video wirelessly, though not through SMB.
I use serviio on the host PCs and bubble upnp on the devices. With bubble upnp you won't even have to touch the OUYA controls. You can browse videos through your phone and will push the video to the OUYA.
Using the OUYA as a dedicated media player is the number one reason I want one.
RE 1080p/60: I would probably say no, but have not tested it.

ouya will be perfect for this
The main issue with OUYA is that all existing android apps will have to be reworked to support controller/remote input
I dont think the Touch pad on the controller is going to cut it. The creator of the Mupen64 emulator sent me this:
"While originally this was planned as a separate port, having looked at the ODK more closely I've discovered that it can be pipelined inside a single APK. So the Google Play version will in fact include the OUYA port (it is now technically an expansion of the project rather than a port).
That said, there are quite a unique requirements when developing for the OUYA compared to vanilla Android. The most immediate are the lack of a touch screen for menu interfaces such as button mapping (touchpad workaround being awkward and slow), lack of Home and Back buttons on the controllers (OUYA simulating Back with a non-standard keycode), lack of a standard Android action bar and menu overflow button, and serious graphics overscan to name the big ones). Had I not purchased a devkit and actually looked into optimizing the app for the OUYA at all, the Google Play version would certainly not have worked well on the OUYA because of these problems. The most serious concerns would have been no way to access the in-game menu options for things like save-state or load-state, extremely tedious mapping the controllers, and borders of the screen being cut off."
I go with the above. You can extract an APK and install on Ouya and will more than likely run. The issue is more, will Ouya input controllers allow one to move around the system or within the apps. Maybe trying something like Sixaxias Controller app and controller may give some indication.
As for the rest, it'll be about the apps. I don't thin PS3Server will work since that is DNLA, and I don't believe Ouya is going to have DNLA. But something like XBMC or Plex should work for media distribution. For direct media playback, If you can find a way to navigate, something like Mobo Player, BS Player, or VLC Android should work.

My bro has an xperia play, and he can use the controls to select and move around. I think that's how its going to work. When you connect a controller to your droid you can still move around using the controls some apps don't work but allot do with the controller or you can you use certain apps to "force" it to work. Plus it has a usb 2.0 port so you can use a mouse to operate it and if you want to connect more i have good feeling a usb modular hub like this one will do the job:

Give it a launcher and it lives

I would rather a few specialised apps that are developed specifically for this device over a lot of android apps "retooled" to make them work. That's why I bought this over an android initial pc.
Seems like the best thread to ask in.
Have had a look around, but can't find a definitive answer so apologise if it has been asked.
What is the story with up-scaling the android games? People now have 50-60 inch TVs, so will games just look sad on these big panels? What resolutions can we expect? 4k?

The games will all run at 1920x1080, native resolution for any HDTV. 50" or 60" doesn't change that.
4K is 2+ years away from being affordable and even longer away from being mainstream.

I am getting an OUYA specifically for the XBMC capability. I am currently using a soft modded original XBOX to do this for my kids tv but would like something with an HDMI output and this fits the bill. The gaming and other apps are just an added bonus.
they haven't really said anything on the upscaling.
But I don't think it's going to be as bad as you think. Some of the games are designed for newer mobiles devices which has higher resolution screens them selves; they're just only a couple inches big. New mobiles phones have 720p displays, and tablets have 1080p. So, games may already be designed for those displays. They're just not going to super detailed because developers were making games on the screens for ten inches or smaller.
The games designed for Ouya I expect to look better since they're designed for significantly larger displays.
Just don't expect a game designed for low resolution desplays such as 4080x320 to look that great, even if they're is upscaling.

A port of Ubuntu TV to OUYA could be a nice catch.
Ouy(meh)
I got my Ouya yesterday. Like many of you, I backed the kickstarter to have a game console where I can play old NES SNES roms and watch and stream movies. As of this date I don't think the console is ready for prime time. In my two days of using it here are my pros and cons:
Pros
Able to play old games
Ability to stream music and videos
Small and quiet
Great value
Excellent customer support. Every time I write them an email they reply within 24hr or less
Cons
Unable to power unit on/off via the controller like the PS3/XBOX360
Limited launch apps and games
(currently) Does not support USB storage/expansion. EDIT 5/14/13: figured out how to access usb stick by installing ES File Explorer or Total Commander
Choppy frame rate while watching MP4 videos (via XBMC). Unbearable streaming of MKV files
Cumbersome method of sideloading apps (if you're not familiar with adb). EDIT 5/14/13: load apps/files by connecting the Ouya directly to my mac and installing Android File Transfer on my mac. I then loaded ES File Explorer and Total commander and I am able to create an FTP or LAN network with those apps to transfer files wirelessly.
Controller sticks and it feels really cheap. EDIT 5/14/13: I connected my PS3 controller so I no longer have to use the Ouya's cheap remote. It even works wirelessly.
Like all new technology I believe it will get better with time but I don't think it would ever handle MKV files smoothly

Oreste, are you using the libstagefright Android version of XBMC? Because from your description it doesn't sound like it.
XBMC has an alpha build that enables hardware acceleration on Android.
Try the Gotham Alpha 2 build from April 3rd. http://mirrors.xbmc.org/test-builds/android/
It should decode 1080p mkv files smoothly. It works very well on my Nexus 7, which is running a slower version of the Tegra 3 chip that powers the Ouya.
Let us know your results.
Cheers

I am just using the stable build listed on xbmc.org/download. I just clicked on the Android download link. The file name is xbmc-12.2-Frodo-armeabi-v7a.apk but I will give that a try now. Should I uninstall the current apk or just override?
On a side note, I am using a PS3 controller wirelessly with the Ouya, so I am slowly liking the system more and more. I'll report back in a few after I update xbmc.
I've been looking for ways to remote control my VLC and YouTube videos. There are apps out there, but it seems like most of them need to be completely reset every time I close and reopen the browser/viewer. So I figured I could just use a remote desktop app and control it remotely that way. I don't think I'm going to do much gaming remotely, but I do want smooth 1920x1080 play-back. Or will the N4's 1280x768 screen cause it to scale down to a lower resolution? And if so, I'm wondering which is the best app to do it. Does Splashtop THD simply not work on non-Tegra devices? And will the regular HD app be limited to 720p video playback?
I remember back when I used the app on my iPad it would re-scale the whole desktop UI when I synced it to the iPad. It was kind of annoying... And I'd like to know if it will do that again before I start buying any apps.
Wait so you're trying to watch 1080p videos on the n4? It's possible with this app

[MOD] YouTube 4.4.11 (v5b), *1080p* / 720p HD (over WiFi & 3G), screen off playback
Not exactly. I want to keep watching my videos on my monitor (which is 1920x1080), I just want to sit back and use my phone as a remote. By using splashtop I should be able to use all of the play/pause and other controls via remote desktop functions.
I want to make sure that running splashtop isn't going to rescale my entire desktop UI to 1280 x 768 in syncing up to my Nexus 4. Like it did the last time I tried it with an iPad. If it does do that then I probably just won't use the app, and then I'd be spending 10$ for nothing.
Oh gotcha, just tried and you can have it use your computer's native resolution :good:
Which one, the regular Splashtop HD, or Splashtop THD?

just the regular version. the hd versions are only for tablets...
the hd versions show up for you in the play store? they don't for me.
I use Spashtop 2 and the only thing it does it change your Windows theme from Aero to classic. It can definitely be used as a remote.

have you tried the official youtube remote app? i haven't tried it personally, may be it has the reset problem you mentioned so you are looking for alternatives?

Now that you mention it. They do show up, but they say "none of your devices are compatible with this app." Good to know, I suppose. Well that settles it I guess. Thanks for the help.
EDIT:
Well, exactly what I was worried would happen happened. The screen automatically resized to 1024x768, with big black bars on my monitor. I can bring it back to full HD without too much trouble, but I have to do so every time I start splashtop on my phone. Is there a way to change the default way it handles being thrown into splashtop? So he doesn't do that resize thing?

edit the settings for the connection in the app, choose advanced, select "use computer's native display resolution"
Excellent!
There's only one little issue with it, but it's not a big deal. I just find that the connection drops too quickly. It seems like the link with my desktop breaks every time my phone goes to sleep. Also I'd like it if screen-rotation would lock... (poking at tiny icons while the screen flips about is not an easy task). But those are probably things I can fix by tweaking some settings.
Thanks again for all your help guys!
Wifi mouse will let you control your pc from afar. And with vlc it has all the stuff you need

Unified Remote is my app of choice.
As you can see, you can use inputs like a touchpad or specific remotes for YouTube, Netflix, VLC, MPC, etc (I only use mouse and Netflix, which I find to be perfect). Using an RDP or VNC client seems like a rather heavyhanded method just to emulate HIDs from your bed/sofa.
Also, I've requested that this thread be moved to Q&A. Do not posts inquiries in any other subforum. Requests are accepted in themes/apps only.
