Overall love - Nokia 5.1 Real Life Review

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Nokia 5.1, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Nokia 5.1 is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

To put it shortly, crappy hardware in the very nice body. It seems overpriced.

I disagree. Got two of these for relatives and not only were these phones cheap, they're really nice. 169e for 3/32GB model was bang for the buck. Good screen, easy to hold, looks good, fast enough (around 75k on Antutu) and best of all, security updates for at least 3 years. Camera isn't at S8's level but neither is the price. It's good enough for random snapshots.

That is a joke to be honest. What's the current update level of the phones you bought for your relatives, July or August of 2018? While it's mid of October already... The OTA rollout mechanism and schedule is completely opaque, with fingers pointed variously at HMD Global, Google (for their Android One programme) and cellular carriers (for their approval).

August (at the same level with my OnePlus 5 and LG G6).
I don't mind NOT getting updates every month as long as they keep coming in the long run. And what I've read, HMD has delivered OS and security updates reasonably fast for their phones so far.

no call recording means nokia phones are a joke, they will not sell them many unless they add call recording and ignore “legal issues" like samsung does

This sort of thing really puts me off getting this phone I certainly don't want to buy a phone for it to be out of date in 1 month.
It's put me off buying the current G3 too. I've read every review and 'hands on' preview going and I was even willing to look past only getting the 2GB version, but knowing there might be an upgraded version in the (very) near future will make me stay away from the current G3 until there is definite clarification

The thing is it might be for Korea only but alas LG won't confirm rumours so how long do we wait to hear if it's true or not?

Well that's the million dollar question. That article says it's expected in July, which isn't that far away really, so if nothing else surfaces about it by the end of July you could probably safely assume that it was either just a rumour OR it's a new flagship that LG has planned for later in the year/next year/whenever

LG should do a free upgrade for anyone who has just brought it as a gesture of good will if they go ahead and release a 805 in a few weeks.

Haha, they should!.. But they won't I'd be amazed if an upgraded G3 with 805 actually happened, especially this side of the Pacific but we shall see. It states released in July but in regions outside of Korea the device isn't even being released until July in the first place, so it only really makes sense if it's being limited to a specific audience. It's a massive douche move though, to release a "flagship" and then release an upgraded model in the same year... or potentially same month!

Strong rumours of the S5 Prime and M8 Prime were stated just days after the release of those devices, now several months later there is still no official sign of the devices with a vague link to Android Silver (also a rumour!) in February.
If there is going to be a new g3 I would suggest it won't be out for quite some time.

Unfortunately it doesn't help potential buyers who don't want their phones to be obsolete pretty much right after buying it.
I cannot wait to get rid of my iPhone 5S so will get the G3 anyway.
Am actually laughing at the hue n cry here. Dudes, there will always be updates to electronic gadgets and particularly with smartphones in recent years.
All the issues & complaints by early buyers would be rectified in the 2nd set of production. How many cases of such we have seen in recent past. [Nexus 5 speaker grill modification being the latest ].
So no point in fuming at these developments. How much ever you might have been attracted by a device, its always better to wait for a considerable period before procuring one. There has to be always somebody to get it first right. so be it.
Chill dudes.

Iphone 6 is likely to be September/October time.
If you keep waiting there is always going to be a "next device", something is released roughly every 3 months these days, so there comes a point where you just have to accept it and pick a device.
I try, if I can help it to get a device as close to its release date as possible in order to minimise this, but there is no point worrying that it may or may not be replaced with something better in 3-6 months time.

Yep. Point taken. 1 month is really a tight slap on early buyers choice. But based on rumours going around, that handset with 805 might get launched only in Korean market.
Nevertheless, ppl can still import it from Korea. That would impact the price factor..hmm..not sure abt it.

Was going to upgrade to an S6 but now having second thoughts

Like the thread title says my upgrade is up and i was really excited when samsung revealed it (i watched the livestream even) and now that its a few weeks later im having second thoughts.. Its not what you think either.I am ok with no sdcard and im ok with my phone not being water proof (a silly reason not to buy a phone IMO) Obviously we have no real world reviews yet (most of the early reviews are on demo units and its been posted here they are not optimized like the retail units will be) so i take them with a grain of salt...
My actual thoughts are considering waiting a little bit to see what sony and motorola/lenovo bring to the table for 2015. I am hearing good things about the z4 and lots of crazy rumors about a moto x 2015 flagship or a droid turbo 2.. .. i have to admit i was in love with the moto x sadly not the battery life and i actually owned a droid turbo for a few days till i returned it and got my wife a note 4.. .. its not even the glass back (even though it seems like a poor design idea ) i case and screen protect my phone always ..
I guess overall samsung hasn't made me that excited to use my upgrade to the point im not willing to wait and see what sony and moto have up their sleeve... worse comes to worse the price will have dropped by may/june (most likely when we will know about all the 2015 flagships) It kinda makes me sad that im not all jazzed to buy an s6 this time around
To each his own. I'm eligible for an upgrade as well. Right now I'm still using my SGS3. Going to wait and see what the galaxy s6 Active has to offer. Will be one or the other though. In my opinion Samsung has always has the best phones out there period.
If you value an excellent camera in a phone then both Sony and Motorola are absolutely terrible in that regard (harsh on Sony a bit but, seriously, they deserve to be shot for not knowing how to properly use and optimize a big ass 1/2.3 sensor). I loved the Moto X and I love that it has stock android with a few nifty tricks but - believe it or not - the battery wasn't the main reason I didn't go for it - it was its god-awful excuse for a camera.
Part of my decision is already made because I'm stuck on Sprint - Xperia is it out as is the Droid. The G4 is going to be bigger than the G3, which I had passed on for being too big. Even so, only the Xperia has a shot at having as good a camera as the S6, and fingerprint scanner and wireless charging are huge differentiators for me. Plus, nothing down the pike is going to look as hot or distinctive as the S6 Edge. I've never take cared about looks before, but the S6 Edge fills me with lust.
I am on an s3 atm as well .. my phone should have a "decent" camera (meaning when i send pics to my wife on her note 4 or post them online they look good) my smartphone doesnt need to be a DSLR ( i have a nikon D5300 for the good stuff and a canon for trips etc ) honestly the droid turbo took really good shots it just doesnt have OIS (which would be nice) thyeres actually a thread in the turbo forum with lots of nice pics..
i guess my "dream" flagship phone would be like 5.2 in 2k display screen, decent camera, good battery (at least all day watching videos playing games browsing etc) without quick charging ,805-810 processor m(or equiv) 3-4 gigs of ram (new gen not old)
ATM the closest things (last gen) are the droid turbo and note 4.. so far this year we have had alot of letdowns (m9 gflex 2 etc) i figure worse comes to worse ill buy a turbo or note 4 if the flagships truly disappoint or the 810 overheating throttling issues continue
After all the drama about the M9 having worse display than the M8, overheating, and having worse battery life than the M8, you seriously want to consider the G4 and Z4, both of which will suffer from the same problems as the M9?
Are you crazy?

same here.. honestly the only reason i keep buying samsung is because of Sprint. would have loved to get the Z3.
the folks running sprint are idiots for not trying to carry more phones.. then they wonder why they are in the last place when it comes to subscribers. i would of switched carriers long ago, but i am not willing to double the payment of my plan and it's just not worth switching solely to get a different brand phone, and overall i am satisfied with the coverage so i guess i'll keep eating samsung phones until the idiots at sprint finally grow some brains.

There is no other option but Samsung this year. Count your blessings.
I will definitely upgrade to S6. Moto is real good but camera is only average quality everytime, it never got top notch camera. I will also put an eye on upcoming Sony but they delayed the Z4/Z4c/Z4U to Sep(latest leaked info) that would be wait too long, still half year to go....
I will get S6 first and if Sony is real good this time, I may give Z4c a chance later. However, the IMX230 camera in Z4 probably will got better focus because of phase detection focus added but might be still lack of OIS. So, it is a 50/50. S6 focus may loss to Z4 but got OIS to deal with low-light and video stuffs.

I actually get okay customer service at Sprint. AT&T and Verizon are absolute a-holes and look to screwing you over any chance they get. TMo's voice is still awful.

i never had a problem with sprint and generally have the same experience. the only thing i hate is lack of diversity of phones. i give sprint much credit as they are the only real company that actually built their entire network, and its greatly improved. att and vzw only became that big because they basically gobbled up a bunch of companies in the early 90s, they didnt build their network, the bells they took over did, anyway a bit OT..

I am almost the same as you...i was 100% to get either s6 or s6 edge but now i am not that sure anymore and to be honest they are expensive especially the edge...the small battery is killing me...and then i also see my brothers Z3 (his first SONY phone and he said he will never have a samsung again) that have a 5h30min of SOT with 35% battery left and i am not that sure anymore...i might wait for Z4 but now the rumors have it it will be released in september and that is a little too long for me. The one phone i am also eagerly awaiting is ZTE NUBIA Z9 (march 26) especially if it will have very small bezels (i like the look of the small bezel phne) and now that i have a NUBIA Z7mini and i am very happy with it i might go for the NUBIA (i was curious to try chinese phone and that phone surprised me) ...the only think that i dont like in Z7mini is battery...and i also like the fact that there are not many of them in my country as for the samsung i think every 2nd person is gona have one...dont know what will happen till 10th of april
I was going to the the Z4, but Sony's mobile division is going down under and is unstable with all their job cuts and them deciding not to focus much on their mobile department. I'd rather be with a company that is more stable and will provide updates on time and be assured my phone can be warranted
Kind of the same.. I do want a S6 but I won't give up the battery life I get on my 6 Plus and go back to the days of worrying about battery life. I want to return to android but won't go backward in battery life. Had a Note 4 and that didn't match my Plus either. Z4 maybe?

honestly (purely in my own opinion) if i HAD to get a phone now , i would pick the Note 4 over the S6 my wife has it and once you get used to a larger screen (still smaller than a nexus 6) its a really nice phone sd card slot, arguably the best camera on a smartphone, and i enjoy the s pen post its and making stupid doodles on it from time to time.. and games and movies look amazing... and the battery lasts forever (i have watched 2-3 hrs of movies on my wifes, played graphics intensive games like deer hunter and dino hunter and browsed the web etc... ) at about 55% brightness with like 35-40% left at the end of the day.. so if Moto doesnt have anything good out or on the horizon by like june ill probably just get a note 4 or wait for a note 5 (if samsung doesnt mess it up)
While the droid turbo is a great phone, I'd avoid it like the plague. It's basically a verizon exclusive (will be released as the Droid Maxx 2, but not in the US), so any updates will be few and far between. Everyone who bought this phone initially was thinking "moto updates their phones quickly...this will be great!" But quickly realized it's the X,G, and E phones that were released globally that are getting the updates. The turbo is a niche device that verizon has basically already forgotten about.
I only consider purchasing flagship devices from any manufacturer, because I want device support. While I may buy year old flagships, they are still supported way more than niche and newly released mid-range devices.
But, based on what I've seen so far, the S6 is the device to beat this year.

All the other flagships this year will use either the 810 or the 815, both of which are manufactured on the same process node technology and have the same exact reference ARM CPU cores.
The only difference is that the 815 will be using a newer GPU.
The 815 will still have the same problems as the 810.
If you want a non-Samsung flagship, I suggest you wait next year around this month and day, as that is when they'll be using the SnapDragon 820, with Qualcomm's own custom CPU cores.
Of course by then, Samsung will also have their custom Exynos CPU and GPU cores.
Next year is going to be REALLY interesting.

Should I get the V20 (new) or wait until V30's value drops?

Was thinking to get h918 unlocked and new, but not sure, if I should go for it. Was thinking to wait until v30 gets cheaper.
All I need is a basic fast phone, and an amazing DAC for my Pinnacle P1.
G6's price is down now. V30 will get price down after release of V40. V20 is not a phone to buy in 2018. Soon it will be out of 2 years major upgrade cycle and people are waiting for their first major upgrade. I think V30 will be worth waiting for. Don't go for V20 or G6.
Mate 9 is also a great phone.
I would say go for it.. It's cheap..last flagship worth removal battery...we're getting Oreo... treble isn't on the v30...so what's the difference between the two?..besides somewhat of a camera upgrade

Yup. My cousin got a V20. And there is him, always with charger in pocket. 2-3 hours of usage and he has to plug it again. And man, all those lags. Just used it yesterday for 30 minutes and I'm embarrass for recommending him to buy V20. (I told him to buy it almost 3 months ago)
If you people like custom rom buy OnePlus phones. If you like quick update then go for Pixel, Essential, Huawei.
I have an S8 snapdragon and I'm regretting buying it. Oreo is still not here (for all of us, I'm using Oreo by converted my G950w to G950U with no OTA support) even after 7 months and there is no hope for Treble to arrive, no bootloader unlock which means no custom roms.
In my opinion, Huawei is amazing after Google in updating because it is giving treble to existing phones by update from Nougat to Oreo and this means a lot because Samsung isn't doing that (As of Now). This means a lot to me and all Huawei's phones are bootloader unlockable (less developer, I know). But they have courage to give you new features without keeping it for their Next Flagships (Take Note 8 portrait mode for example). A develop can port Portrait mode for most phones but Samsung can't, wow.
And here's Huawei again giving AR Stickers and Facial recognition to its midrange phones through OTA without same strategy of Samsung.

Interesting news from GSM Arena

Huawei will deliver its GPU Turbo tech to older phones, from flagship to mid-range
https://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_wil...ones_from_flagship_to_midrange-news-31649.php
you'll notice Mate 9 is slated for September (yea I'll believe it when I see it)
But, yanno, if it happens, it'll be a good free boost - hell maybe they'll stick in Oreo 8.1 or higher too ad we lose the pesky screen dimming thing & have PROPER WORKING BLUETOOTH AGAIN! who knows
Yes, fingers crossed
LOL probably will be blocked for the USA version though, considering how the U.S. government treated them this spring
Nice info thx, this phone was a great investment.
I can see that it's already out for 2 regions C185B380 and C636B377 on Firmware Finder. Surely other regions will follow within a month time. Add another of course for firmware to be approved for installation.
I thought we're only going to see security updates from here on out
Android Pie It will arrive soon

Snapdragon 855 worth waiting for OP 7 ?

Some friends are suggesting me to wait for the OP 7 as some expect that there will be a lot of features like:
5G support.
Full-screen bezel less display without the notch
Next generation Qualcomm flagship processor.
Quad High Definition (QHD) screen is expected.
Wireless charging with Oppo’s super VOOC fast charging technology.
Is it true and worth it?

Depends what the price will be and how the SD855 stacks up against the SD845, We know their claims are all marketing speak so could be a minor upgrade and 5G is gonna be for early adopters only. Carrier won't be truly ready till like 2020 and Prices will be sky high for 5G plans
I bought a 6T have no regrets but if the OP7 is marginally better I'll just sell this and upgrade to the next one

OnePlus confirmed today the 7 will not have 5g

You could make this post about any tech at anytime now and have half the people say wait and half say don't. I mean, at this point no flagship phone is "bad" anymore, so get what you want.
I used to feel that way when I hear about some cool new tech coming following year. I end up feeling disappointment after such high expectations from rumours.
Not this time. I decided to get the 6T and loving it.
5g will take time to mature anyway, as did 4g took a while. Besides, I can always get a new phone the following year after that anyway.

This doesn't mean the 7 won't have 5G, it just means it won't be their first device that does.
This is not the proper way to think. If your goal is to have the latest technology in your hand you should in fact never buy anything because you'll never have the latest one.
If you need absolutely to change your phone you can't wait
If you don't need absolutely to change your phone you can wait but till when? Why 7 ? Why not the following?
Only you can answer your own question, no need to ask us

SD855 ships with X24 Modem, 5G needs a sperate module X50 Modem to work, That's why we are seeing leaks of multiple devices this year.
The regular SD855 then the 5G variant at a higher cost.
Article just says the first 5G phone from OnePlus won't be OP7, maybe there will be another phone first.
Article also says expect the 5G phone to be 200-300$ more than 6T.
Sounds to me if you want a value/money phone, get the 6T, otherwise you can expect to pay $800-900 for a 5G phone from OnePlus.
Then when the 855 comes out the 865 will be on the horizon with (insert some other cool must have feature).
Upgrade when you want but always know there's something new on the horizon.
