OnePlus 5 does not want to update - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Hello everyone, following a fairly serious problem that forced me to contact OnePlus and pay 100 euros (It had encrypted all the data after installing the MIUI 9, so I could not install anything because in recovery I saw only a series of codes), today I was given the cell phone, but with Android 7.1.1. Being an "old" version I wanted to upgrade to Oreo 8.1, but I can not get it through OTA or recovery. In OTA it tells me "installation failed" and if I try via recovery the installation will be stuck for some strange reason without even giving an error code. What could I do? Thanks in advance to those who will answer

Problems to update

Hi!!
I'm having problems to update from android 8.0.0. My phone is no rooted, the bootloader is open (I have learned that it's so expensive to close it xD xD, when you close it the phone makes briked) and when the update is downloading and the phone needs to reboot to install it, I can't because apears TWRP and I can't to install from here, and I don't find the normal or stock recovery to install it.
What can I do?
Thanks in advance!
You can flash this in twrp just like any other rom.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g6/development/rom-eu-lg-h870-20a-rom-t3794503
I had my phone unlocked and rooted with Fulmics 4.2 onboard.
Right when Oreo dropped, I locked my phone and flashed the update straight away.
No brick occured.

So I not need another OS, in fact, I have this oreo installed, but when the system sais that there are updates (now I have one update pending of 700mb) and when it's need reboot for install, this can't finish because TWRP appear, and doesn't let it finish to install the update...
I don't know exactly what I need to do, and I don't want to lose mine actual OS.
Could be possible to update the updates, likely manual mode or similar? Without reboot the phone and avoid the reboot and pass by twrp?
Thanks again

Honor 8 Lite stuck at Android 8.0.

Hi,
so I need some help. I recently rooted my phone using SuperSU, and was dumb enough not to make a backup of it before trying to update the stock ROM with Android 8.0 one. I flashed it, and the phone didn't boot. Well, I did a factory reset, and by a mistake, clicked update my phone to stock Android 8.0. I tried to flash TWRP, but it just said "failed (remote: partition length get error)".
So, now I am stuck at non-rooted phone what I cannot root. Any way I could get TWRP?
Still with the same problem :/
Please PM me your phone build number @Vizitys

Oneplus 5 Update fails

Hello everyone,
For a while now, I have been delaying this, because I can't afford to lose the content that I have on this device
I have a Oneplus 5 OxygenOS 5.1.4 release that I can't install. Everytime I do, it just fails, and reboot. A while after, I have a new notification telling me that the update is available
My phone is not rooted but I think the bootloader is unlocked. TWRP isn't installed either
Is there any way for me to easily update my phone witout risks of losing what I have on it ? Might be a dumb question, but I'm a huge noob
Thansk a lot for your help

Do you get the bootloader unlock warning message at boot? Is the device new or used? You want to update from 5.1.4 to 5.1.5 with ota right? Does the ota download 1.7GB or detect root before downloading?
Hello strongst and thanks for your answer
The phone is old but it's always been mine. I rooted it a while back but I reinstalled everything, which is why the bootloader is unlocked even tho the phone isn't rooted.
I do have the warning message when I boot
I'm trying to update with OTA indeed. When I do so, it downloads the update, reboots, and then I get this :
"Instaling, please wait..." and a few seconds after "Installation failed"
Then I just rebot the phone and everything is back to its initial state

I'm guessing it downloads partial ota and not a full rom like about 1,7GB so the update fails. In case you have twrp you can easily download the 5.1.5 FULL zip from here and flash it https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3628190
I am sorry that my answer wasn't complete.
- I do have the bootloader message
- The device is a year old, but only used by me
- It's trying to download 5.1.4 OTA which is 1609MB. It downloads everything and tries to install it
- No root is detected
- I don't have TWRP on the phone
Thanks for your answers
Best way it simply install latest TWRP like Sian, do a dirty flash with the full OOS Rom package (5.1.7) for force update.
1/ Do a full backup of your data / sms / pictures on your computer (just for be sure, you must always backup for big changes, especially with encrypted roms)
2/ install TWRP Sian
3/ On TWRP > Wipe > Dalvik/ART - Cache paritions
4/ Install > the latest stable OOS 5.1.7 Rom
5/ Just after that flash Magisk (if you want keep the custom recovery) or don't flash Magisk (stock recovery will erase TWRP after SetupWizard)
Hello Pho3nX, thanks for your answer.
I tried to figure out what "TWRP Sian" is, but I couldn't find anything. I found this one : https://twrp.me/oneplus/oneplus5.html and I'm planning on following the "Fastboot Install Method". Is that OK ?
Do you recommand me to flash Magisk ?
Thanks a lot

This : [RECOVERY] TWRP-3.2.3 with Pie decryption support [experimental]
And yes i advise to install Magisk for keep TWRP & tools / root, permit using useful root app like Titanium/Theme/Adaway/Explorer etc...

If you have no twrp already installed on your device you must flash the twrp.img file with fastboot like "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img"
Hello,
You haven't heard from me because I wait to be at home so I can safely follow your instructions.
I just saw a news about Android Pie 9.0 beta being released for Nexus 5.

Lost TWRP after update C100B303 to C100B307 and cannot install again

I had a Media Pad M3 with unlocked bootloader, rooted and TWRP as recovery. As I wanted to update my ROM to BTV-DL09C100B311 I had some problems in TWRP an thought updating step by step would be a good idea. So I downloaded all missing ROMs throught FrimwareFinder and startet with BTV-DL09C100B307_fullOTA.
The installation in TWRP with ADP sideload worked and when I restartet my device a was a bit suprised that the yellow "Bootloader is unlocked - your device is unsecure" message was missing. I restarted again and the message is still missing. I thought OK perhaps I can now install all updates through the EMUI build in process without FirmwareFinder or TWRP.
EMUI downloaded the update and asked me to restart and install. After the restart the install process went to 20% and told me then there was a verification error. When I restarted the tablet again I got a screen similar to the yellow "Bootloader is unlocked - your device is unsecure". The screen is red an told me "Your device has failed verification an may not work properly".
Now I'm stuck. No updates work and TWRP could not be started or installed again.
I tried reinstall TWRP with fasboot (https://forum.xda-developers.com/mediapad-m3/development/twrp-greatslon-mod-t3489232) but I get the error FAILED (remote: "command not allowed"). I tried the newest TWRP mod from https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=125388 but same error.
Phone and FRP are still unlocked, as shown in FASTBOOT&RESCUE MODE so this is not the cause of the above mentioned fastboot error.
I installed the Android SDK completly and downloaded the newest toolkit (https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools) but still get the above error. So I dont think its a driver problem either.
I did not try to unlock the bootloader again. I don't think this makes sense even if I still have the original codes.
I would like to get TWRP back and update the tablet to the newest ROM version. And it would also be nice to know what happened here
Thanks in advance for everyone helping me back on track. I think the first step should be get over the FAILED (remote: "command not allowed") error and install TWRP again.
I got it
Needed to unlock the bootloader again. Even so it throws an error the red starting screen disappeared an I got the usual yellow one back and i could install TWRP.
//Edit
Managed to get to newest Version with this updater: https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/development/tool-flash-official-firmware-recovery-t3769279

I am also looking for a way to update my rooted M3 (WiFi edition) to the latest available version with security patch line of November.
Now I wonder whether with this updater in your post above this works immediately or if I also have to go through all the difficulties you faced?
Is it possible to install updates with a rooted device with this updater or do you always need to unlock the bootloader again?
Thanks for your help!
Just tried it out now and it worked! Data is still there, homescreen icons are a little bit messed up and root is gone (no problem).
This is great because I was looking now for a long time to find a way to update a rooted M3 with new OTA updats (all the usual way fails).
I used to do it with going back to stock and a factory reset being involved.
Funny that you presented me the solution with your problem.
Glad that you shared it.
Now the only thing I am missing is to install the Xposed Framework on the M3. If you know how to do this let me know (I am using Super SU).

Im happy I could help. I dont use Xposed.
Hi, can you, please, describe this in steps? What I have to do before standard OTA update should work? And when (and how) to open bootloader once more? Thank you very much.
Standard ota updates will not work. If you already have an unlocked bootloader you have to use this method https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/development/tool-flash-official-firmware-recovery-t3769279 to manual update your M3 to the newest version.
If you have no unlocked bootloader please check this first https://forum.xda-developers.com/mediapad-m3/development/twrp-greatslon-mod-t3489232

[Help] Recovery broken/bricked

So, after buying my OP5, I rooted it and pretty much left it at that. Haven't accepted any OTA updates out of laziness and not wanting to reroot. After 2 years, I decided to finally update. Went and did a nandroid backup, then looked to flash the latest version of the OTA update. Got an error that said something along the lines of "file is for 'Oneplus 5' but device is ' ' ".
Did some googling and saw people recommend a newer version of TWRP, so I went and downloaded and flashed it through TWRP. When I tried to reboot into recovery, nothing happened. Black screen and a permanent bluish-white notification light. Was still able to hard shutdown and boot back into regular OS. Tried to flash via the TWRP app and adb - same result both times, black screen + notification light.
Does anyone know how to restore my recovery and get the OTA update to flash properly? Any help is massively appreciated.

Rooted phone and skipped 2 years of updates... That fail for sure and really hard to ota without data loss.
What was your last running rom version, twrp version, magisk version, encryption status of internal storage?
Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it.
Last ROM version: OOS 4.5.8
TWRP: 3.1.1-1
Magisk: 17.1
Encryption status: encrypted
How screwed am I?

Oh, I recommend to backup everything with titanium backup and Google along with local backups of your internal storage.
OTA is really not a convenient way and you'll face issues so my recommendation is to clean flash if you want to save time.
