Greyish overlay when set to minimum brightness? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently I found out that whenever the brightness is set to minimum value (or low enough to a specific value), the screenshot that I take will become greyish.
Is it possible that Amazon integrated a grey overlay into the brightness setting? My hypothesis is that when the critical point is reached, instead of lowering the actual brightness, Fire OS draws a grey overlay on the screen.

How to make screen dimmer

I often use the phone to read in bed with the lights off. The screen is still way to bright even set to 0%. Anyone know how to dim it further?

If you're using the Aldiko ebook reader, just set the background color to black and set the text color to grey or some other dull color.
on 1% mine is very dim even in pitch black darkness, you must have sensitive eyes
I wonder if mine is behaving normally. I have set it to Auto adjust off, and slider to 0%, and it is still readable in bright light (probably daylight).

Maybe you have the same problem described here?

Get the Dimmer app from the market, it drops the screen "0%" brightness from 18% default to 10% and I find it perfect.
I just tested 3 apps on the market. Dimmer is good, but quite simplistic. Varies the brightness between "10" and whatever you have it set at. Apparently Android's idea of 0% is "18".
I also tried "Brightness Level" which gives a bit more control and allows you to set 0%, 25%, 75%, 100% and Auto. 0% setting in Brightness Level appears to be the same as the level of "10" that Dimmer allows. The program gives a percentage indicator of brightness.
Brighterrific may be very marginally 'better' at dimming the screen. It allows you to set a minimum and maximum brightness. If I set it to 0% in the program and then compare, it says the brightness has been set to -3% (according to the brightness percentage indicator in "Brightness Level"). The difference between 0 and -3 isn't very visible to me, but maybe it'll save slightly more battery life. I also noticed that clicking on Dimmer won't work after setting it to a level of -3%; maybe because the program doesn't recognise a level lower than it's default lowest level of "10"?
Obviously lower levels must be possible if Dimmer indicates that it's lowest level has a value of 10; it must be possible to set it to 0 or 1 somehow. Needless to say, if anyone finds a program which can set -30% let me know
Thanks folks. I have installed Dimmer and I am happy with the screen brightness.

[Q] Lower the minimal brightness to be even less bright.

Is there any config file or system file where we can set minimal brightness? cause default 8-11% is to bright for me. I mean it's ok for the eyes i just worried about battery.
PLEASE don't suggest me those stupid apps for dumb people. Apps can do nothing, all apps is just replicas of stuff that is already in system.
In CM7 ROM i see custom values for brightness but those seems like don't work cause nothing changes
So is there any way to get minimal brightness to be even more minimal?
'Tasker' has an option to set brightness as any number value. It also has a warning message that says to avoid setting it to zero because it will make the device useless.

Click to collapse
AFAIK it doesn't actually reduce the backlight, just makes the screen darker. So its same amount of battery usage, It only decreases battery usage on a AMOLED screen.
SAD... cause brighness is good, but at night when you're in the dark it may be even more less bright and save some battery.. strange..maybe it's limited by Android API. I used CM7 options there is very nice module where you can set your own values in automatic adjustment of light but even if i set 5 it does not reduce light.
Maybe it's the lowest possible value for hardware..

Lowering Brightness

The "low" brightness is way too bright for me. Microsoft is nice enough to introduced 30 levels of volume but offering just 3 levels of brightness is pretty dumb.
Anyways I was looking through registry hack and I found the MinBrightness and MaxBrightness setting. Originally I set it to "manual" and "low" in the brightness setting. Then I checked the registry and the Min and Max is 0 and 19 respectively.
I changed the Max to 0, and it APPEARED to be dimmer than before. I went back to the Setting -> Brightness and now my brightness level is shown as "Medium", Auto adjust set to off. Both of them are grey out so that I cannot change it, I supposed the setting screen read an unsupported combination and freaked out. I wonder if anyone else tried this, or this is just my placebo effect?
I thought I was the only one having this problem.
Hopefully there will a solution regarding this issue.
I wonder if I can use privacy screen to lower the brightness, or even those tinted window screen from home depot.
So where to tweak this in registry?

How to reduce notification brightness?

Even with the least brightness selected for the display, the notification in lock screen comes with highest brightness. Any way to reduce this ? This is usually too bright for in a dark room.

How to force phone to have a high minimum brightness?

I have the issue where my phone screen goes green and glitchy when the brightness gets to low. Is there anyway where I can make it so the brightness level can only go to a higher brightness?
I know there are apps that allow you to go darker, I want to go brighter.
