Hello,
I have some experience with installing ROMs on Samsung Galaxy S4 with TWRP in the past but haven't done so in a very long time. With Xiaomi's disappointing announcement that they will not issue Oreo for Redmi 3S I'm looking for ways to obtain that Android version because I'm still stuck with stock Android v6 by MIUI, v9 Beta.
With the overwhelming amount of available ROMs I would ask for advice which one is most recommended for stability, continuous flow of stable updates and most developed in terms of features.
If you could point me to it along with a comprehensive guide on how to install TWRP with it it would be most appreciated. I looked up on Google, YouTube and many other sites but every guide has something in common and something different, which is why I'm not entirely sure about doing it because I don't want to brick my device.
Many thanks in advance!

1. Unlock Your Phones bootloader (works on any Xiomi device) :http://maheshtechnicals.com/2018/02/unlock-bootloader/
2. Install TWRP RECOVERY : http://maheshtechnicals.com/2017/07/how-to-install-twrp-recovery-on-redmi-3s-prime-3x/
3. Install custom Rom (Step by step tutorial with download links) :http://maheshtechnicals.com/category/xiaomi-redmi-3s-prime-3x-roms/
Note that it takes (at least) 72 hours to unlock bootloader now. You need "permission"(up to 7 days, usually 30-40 minutes) and "wait time" (72 hours for Redmi 3s)
I have done a full program packet scan, the "wait time" limitation is server side. The Xiaomi server holds your RSA decryption key for unlock on the server. It will not send it over until the 72 hour limit expires.
There is no way to get the unlock your phone without the decryption key, and it isn't sent until the server's 72 hour timer expires.
Here are the brief steps.
1) Sign into Mi Account on the phone (use existing Mi Account. More Forum points via older account = faster "permission")
2) Go to <mi unlock website>. Fill out form, in English is fine. I wrote something like I need to flash custom rom.
3) Wait 24-72 hours for "permission". This will be via SMS. Mine took 30 minutes.
4) Unlock developer mode on phone (Settings---> About phone---> MIUI Version (Keep tapping it to enable developer option)
5) Settings---> Additional settings---> Developer option and bind your approved Mi account under Mi Unlock Status. It should say account bound. If not, you need to VPN to get this to work. Look up a guide.
6) Reboot phone into bootloader (hold down power button and volume down. The word "Fastboot" and a xiaomi guy appears).
7) Finally, download the MI Unlock app (version 3.x.x) from <mi unlock website>. Login etc. Attempt to unlock. It should fail at 99% and say "wait 72 hours". If it fails at 50%, it means you didn't complete step (1->3) correctly.
8) Come back in 72 hours. should work.
The Official guide is a bit old and some of the pictures/links are outdated. Namely don't download Mi Unlock tool 1.1.xx. Download 3.x.x from <mi unlock website>
My last root/etc was Cyanogenmod 10 on HTC One S. So we are from a similar era

Hey check your telegram. I just texted you
Hi everyone and thanks for the replies!
I was about to follow the steps to unlock the bootloader when I encountered two things,
1) I didn't have to file an application to unlock the bootloader, the website directly redirected me to the unlock app. Seems like permissions are already granted,
2) checking my phone's developer options I stumbled upon this:

I just wanted to confirm whether that means I can safely proceed with installing TWRP and flash a custom ROM and don't need to do anything else.

With that, some words of wisdom:
1.This is an Android 5.1 Lollipop-based release - update your third party addons to ensure compatibility
2.The CM backupscript.sh in recovery will ignore and remove incompatible applications from your system partition (these are usually non-CM apps that users have opted to install). You must install a compatible app (or app pack) to regain that functionality
3.You can flash CM12.1 nightlies directly from CM11 M12 or CM 11 nightlies (no need to wipe), provided you read and followed items 1 and 2
4.Once on CM12.1 nightlies, you cannot downgrade back to CM11 without wiping – if you are thinking of just exploring the release, then take a backup of your existing installation if you want to go back to it.
5.You’ll need an L compatible recovery DOWNLOAD post #2 [TWRP - install]
6.For those which have problem with root acces - flashable superSU file via custom recovery.
6a.Check also on developer options is there root acces is "thick" for APPS+ADB
enjoy!

At this point, the following large items are not implemented, but should be in the next few weeks. Some additional smaller tweaks are also missing, but left off this list:
Theme Engine
Quick Settings reorganization and customization
Quick Settings Ribbon mode
Navigation bar reorganization and customization
Sound panel customization
Lock-screen quick unlock"
Thank you for this!! Been waiting patiently! Gonna d/l and flash now.

Unless they changed their policy, this was their stance on encryption for OFFICIAL releases as of 10/31. You can still flash a different kernel that supports unencrypted volumes though, or install an unofficial release that comes with a different kernel.
"Items not up for debate:
1) Watering down of SELINUX protections or Encryption by default. These are base protections L is introducing and we should support these items as such. If your device fails to allow encrypting, it will not get a CM sanctioned release."
hopefully the theme engine will be here soon just waiting for that before I flash.
Verizon LTE Support??
Does this support Verizon LTE or is it plagued by the ongoing issues found with some of the other CM-based ROMs for shamu?

Shouldn't this be in Original Android development since this is the official thread?
I have install this build and first impression:
DIALER is much response compared to pure shamu rom + sensei kernel
no lag
no SOD
phone is not hot
during install this ROM phone being encrypted (it takes 30s)
it needs time to say more
Downloading now to see
one more thing so much important :
enough loud voice during a call without any modification! (out of the box)
what kernel would you guys recommend using to stay as close as possible to stock but with out encryption?
ROOT is a little different. Took me awhile to figure out that privacy guard has to be enabled on the app to recognize superuser access. Looks good other than the white background is killing me! cant wait for themes.
greenify seems to freeze the phone when using this first nightly. weird cuz it didnt happen with the unofficial builds.

The Redmi 4a is an entry-level device from Xiaomi (which was released along the Redmi 4 and Redmi 4 Prime), which looks like to be an absolute steal for the money. Couldn't find much about it here on XDA, so decided it was time for a general thread until it gets it's own section on XDA.

Interesting
Well, just another interesting device from Xiaomi. But for under $100 it is good. Waiting now for TWRP and CM14 ... Unfortunately I'm not able to do that.
I bought Redmi 4a this morning from Gea***st, 88 euro.
I'm interesting to unlock band 20 (800mz), but seems not possible.

Aahh good to see there's a discussion section for redmi 4a on xda dev.
good specs of the price
Had now worked a while with that phone. Battery lasts long and phone is fast enough for all apps for daily use. Can use it as a daily driver. But want LineageOS. Miui EU is quite good, but I think lineage might be better.
What's your experience?

MIUI Global Stable ROM V8.1.4.0.MCCMIDI for Redmi 4A Released since 27 Jan 2017. I tried, not much different from China ROM. From China ROM, problems I face is:
1. Many unnecessary apps;
2. left only 9GB internal storage out of the System;
3. advertisement popup;
4. can't sync Google Calender (it wont show even after insert account);
5. Download Playstore apps only with Wifi;
6. Search with Baidu instead of Google;
7. Can't play Pokemon Go !!; some game won't sync with Google Play status
After changing Global ROM ( Go to //en.miui.com/thread-480190-1-1.html) :-
1. Many unnecessary apps;
2. left only 9GB internal storage out of the System;
3. advertisement popup;
4. can't sync Google Calender (it wont show even after insert account);
5. Download Playstore apps only with Wifi;

7. Can't play Pokemon Go; some game won't sync with Google Play status. >>> Pokemon do working well if you download the latest APK from mirror link, we guess Niantic hasn't updated their list of supported devices for Redmi 4A. I just comment via Playstore, hopes they update ASAP. >> see how its going next ~

I find this stated clearly under chapter "download".

I haven't got one yet, but thinking of getting my hands on the moment LineageOS is available! LineageOS 14.1 on the Redmi 4A would be the perfect budget device.
Hey guys, another update, the Redmi 4A has it's own enhanced tag, which groups all the related threads together and allows us to search for our device on XDA

I just received my ZUK Edge last Saturday. The set up UI is in Chinese, if you could manage to pass the initial steps and switch the language to English, there are some tweaks can be done at this point even if there are no other ROMs available.
Launch the "App Center" and search for "google", install the frameworks you need to set up Google account and everything.
Unlike the previous ZUK phones, I was able to unlock the bootloader using adb directly (remember once it's unlocked the "System Update" will stop working and you won't get a chance to upgrade to ZUI 2.5/Android 7.0 via OTA, the phone is shipped with ZUI 2.3/Android 6.0.1 as today). I found a TWRP build on a Chinese forum.
https: pan.baidu.com/s/1nuH3oTz"]https://pan.baidu.com/s/1nuH3oTz
The password is bz5h
After you booted into Bootloader, your computer may not recognize the phone when you try to flash TWRP. In that case, you need to install ZUK USB driver. Again, this TWRP build is in Chinese at start up, it's not difficult to switch the language if you were already familiar with TWRP.
After I rooted the phone, I flashed the TBO version Google Now launcher and Pixel launcher, both work flawlessly, it's up to you which one you want to keep. Once this step is done, you can remove "ZUI Home" from the system completely.
Here is my screenshot after all the tweaks:

We have to wait the firmware to be posted on the internet, then flash with TWRP, fastboot, FlashFire or something like that. I recommend try FlashFire developed by the developer created SuperSU.
So far the ZUI 2.5 for Edge posted out is a development version, someone said it won't work when flashed over stable ZUI 2.3. I rather wait for 3rd party ROM like LineageOS so I didn't and not planning to try, and I suggest you to wait for the ZUI 2.5 stable build.
I just got my old account back.
Let's see if I can share the photo from my album.

It's really frustrating to share something here. Nothing is working.
The USB drivers you need to flash TWRP:
http://gsmusbdriver.com/lenovo-zuk-z2
You only need the one for "firmware flashing". You don't need to install anything special for regular file transfer or charging on a Windows 10 PC.
Messages in Chinese
It is \system\priv-app\DownloadProvider sending the notification in Chinese after switched language to English (ZUI 2.3 based on Android 6.0.1):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/picture.php?albumid=13952&pictureid=55065
I corrected and rebuilt DownloadProvider.apk, but somehow I couldn't make it work.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/picture.php?albumid=13952&pictureid=55068
Besides, I failed to install the apk through adb, always complain about permissions when "remount". I've tried the regular methods like adb root or rm in adb shell. I have to copy the modified apk to priv-app directly, maybe it's the reason it didn't work, or it has to be signed with specific cert I don't know.
Any suggestion?
I cleared Dalvik cache but my re-packed DownloadProvider.apk is still not working. Did anyone experience the same here? Like on Z2 or other models? I learned from somewhere ZUK Edge literally has the Z2 ROM with minimal modification when rushed out of the door. I guess Z2 has the similar behavior but didn't find any clue when search the forum.
It's interesting. Dialing *#*#5236#*#* on ZUK Edge is supposed to show the model of the display module, now it's showing AMS520_MAGNA_1920_1080_5.2, which is the 5.2" module on ZUK Z2, kinda suggesting the phone is flashed with Z2 ROM. Maybe I could give it a try with CyanogenMod ROM for ZUK Z2.

That won't work. The ZUK Z2 Pro runs on Snapdragon 820. ZUK edge runs in snapdragon 821. The rom would bootloop. Assuming it actually boots since the kernel is also not for the ZUK edge.
ZUI is probably one of the most developer or root unfriendly system. I found I couldn't adb remount the system partition, it turned out adbd is not running in root mode even though the phone is rooted. I had to use Chainfire's "adbd Insecure" to change the mode, whenever I set it to insecure mode, USB debugging is disabled. Then I figured I need to set SELinux mode to permissive (which Google hates it). After I installed SELinuxModeChanger, it couldn't gain root access, because I need set BINDSYSTEMXBIN=true and reinstall SuperSU. Man, what a hassle!
ZUI 2.5
Hi there! Typing from Italy and our most popular web-shop that sells Chinese Smartphones has the Zuk Edge already with Android 7 and ZUI 2.5
So my question is: can i unlock the bootloader as you mentioned before? Which is the best TWRP so far? The one posted on the official ZUK Chinese Forum?
And second things:
another Italian Web-site (GizChina) posted a ROM based on ZUI 2.3 Android 6 with GPS and multi-languages (just a few, but Italian, English, French, German are available). Is it possibile flash it from a device with Android 7 already in?
Thanks in advice
Can anyone share system dump?
As far as I know ZUI 2.5 for Edge is still under development, if they are selling the phone with 2.5 I'd assume that's not the final build. In terms of TWRP I think the one from my previous link should be fine, as Recovery is prior to the system, the newer ZUI should not affect TWRP vice versa.

Yeah i write to some ITA blogs and they answered to me that the 2.5 ZUI is still under development. The phone comes with ZUI 2.3 and Android 6.0

I would like a Rom with nougat and French language, custom or stock Rom it's not a problem.
Hi! Thanks for instructions!
But i have a problem. I cant boot my phone in fastboot at all :/
Its a ZUK EDGE phone.
Im on win XP, ZUK drivers are installed, ADB and fastboot also working ok.
But when i try to boot in fastboot with vol-&power button it boots in some menu with the following options:
SD update

Ive registered a Lenovo account, walk thru unlocking procedure online and i have the unlock_bootloader file. And catn flash it

Hi XDA members!

So let's start it!

Sorry, but I don't know. I tried it with MIUI 8 and it worked. If you try it and confirm if it works then tell me.
Amazing
Could you do it with other Redmi phone aswell, or It is very complicated?
So when I want to flash a Custom Rom like LineageOS 13 or 14
1. I just have to flash a TWRP on the Note 3 Pro and then
2. flash the ROM
3. (maybe) flash SuperSU?
Since this method of unlocking is an unofficial one does one have to flash the special TWRP when one wants to flash a MIUI based ROM?
Thx for the work.

Maybe i can do it but then I need the firmware for the specified phone etc...
I don't really want to start projects with phones that I don't own because i need to test if it works etc... and i don't want to brick other people's phones by my own fault.
I hope you understand.

Yes. You need a special TWRP if you unlocked your bootloader unofficially. For example I always use ZCX TWRP. I can flash any ROM without problem. And if I get stuck at MI logo because my bootloader relocked then I just flash the files with MiFlash and after everything works fine.
If I use this method and install any other rom now. Can I revert back and officially unlock my bootloader in the future? And also will unofficially unlocking cause any problems/hindrance to frequent ROM, Kernel flashing???( As in having to do some special step like replacing some img file everytime I flash a ROM through TWRP???)
TIA

You can easily revert back to stock with flashing an official firmware through MiFlash.
The unofficial unlock doesn't cause any problems. It's just like if you unlocked officially. Maybe you need to reflash this pack everytime you update or install a new rom... I'm not sure but you'll see it anyway.
I tried it and now my phone is hard bricked......... phone doesn't boot up, doesn't get recognized on the pc and when plug the phone in all I get is a blinking red light.... wont go into fastboot or edl mood..... can I get help or is there anything I can do to fix it????

On which device you tried? (kenzo, kate?)
Press all three buttons (vol up+down +power) it will force reboot the phone and when phone reboots immediately try to boot in fastboot

That's why I put off release for a few weeks later.
The only one bug is hdr screen but exists on all ROMs. Now I trying to find a fix
Thank you very much. I have installed it on my device. I really like this ROM.
But there are some notes that I found.
1. Volume settings when making WhatsApp & Telegram calls using a wired headset cannot be adjusted.
2. FPS info does not appear when activated.
3. Chat balloon for WhatsApp not working.
That's a note I found after 3 days of installation.
I really enjoy this ROM. Thank you very much.

Can I do a dirty flash over crDroid v6.13?
Hi..I tried to flash it several times but it still not working...
I tried the following respectively:
1. flash MIUI 12.0.2.0 Chinese version and then flash Crdroid.
2. flash MIUI 9 Oero and then flash Crdroid
3. flash MIUI 9 Oero, firmware and Crdroid
3. flash MIUI 11 Pie, firmware then flash Crdorid.
Whatever I do, my phone will be stuck at either fastboot or MI logo. The problem also occurred when I was flashing Crdroid 6 but I solved it though, however this solution can't fix my problem now.
Do you have any advice? Please help me

Format Data, not just wipe. Reboot to TWRP and connect your phone to PC. Transfer ROM to random place in internal storage, you must see TWRP folder only. Flash ROM, gapps or magisk and try now. Wipe cache/dalvik.
You must have cleaned everything needed before flashing new rom (see instructions) and must be on latest FW.
