Android P Beta is now live. - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Just announced. Android P beta is live. https://www.google.com/android/beta#devices

Just got the OTA on my Pixel XL on 8.1

I'm in if someone finds out how to root it. Or at least how we can install it via TWRP or adb. Looks promising. The IO Keynote is kinda fun. Hope more stuff would be "available now" instead of *soon or *this year...

Wondering if tethering goes through a provisioning check or if we need to wait for a root exploit first
beta wont install with custom kernel, uninstalled magisk, no TWRP, but download still wont start.

It will install over the Dev 1 preview. I unrooted, signed up for the beta and hit check for updates and it was there.

Wait, what? So I just have to unroot with the magisk uninstaller via TWRP, then install the OTA, then root again? But will that work with an unlocked bootloader and TWRP installed?

I'm downloading now, but seems to be taking forever to download

I just opened Magisk and had it uninstall itself, rebooted and then hit check for updates and it installed fine. It did fail before I uninstalled Magisk. I can't say for sure how it will be with TWRP installed, I don't do that.

Thanks dude! I guess I'll try it later maybe.
But then how do/did you root your phone if you don't use TWRP?

FYI, I have no wifi right now. It connects but 'no internet'. Working on it now.

Where's the new system navigation, dashboard and other features they just showed off?

So they showed off the new features of Android P and released the beta with none of them?...typical. Is it any different than the dev preview? Now I'm stuck with this ugly UI and none of the features I was interested in.

For swipe navigation, you need to turn it on in "Gestures"

I fastboot boot it and install the Magisk zip, and don't install the TWRP zip.
Found my WiFi problem. I was using Private DNS, looks like it is broke on Preview 2.

Sorry, can't tell you that since I am waiting for someone kind enough to provide instructions on how to install this with an unlocked bootloader/twrp/magisk. But since full image downloads for this DP2 are not live yet, as far as I know at least, I guess I'll have to wait some more.
And yeah, I feel like they used to show more new stuff "out now" in previous years. But the last few times they announced a whole lot of stuff coming *soon, over the next weeks, months, summer, fall, or whenever. It used to be way more fun for me to get a "new version of Android every year with lots of new features" instead of this gradual roll-out of features. At least that's my opinion.

Android P or May?

ymmv, but I was on 8.1 April with twrp/mag16.3. Opted into Beta program and P-dp2 ota downloaded and installed without removing magisk. Note that I had not made any build.prop changes etc.
Once on dp2, fastbooted twrp, reboot recovery- installed full twrp, rebooted recovery -installed full magisk16.4. Magisk rooted fine and tether enabler module seems to work.

You can grab the original preview image, edit out the -w in the flash all bat file and flash it. Then sign up for the Beta and grab the OTA. Then reroot.

How do I update to the march patch with twrp installed?

When I got my phone last month, I unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP. I just got the march OTA and it will not update. It just boots into TWRP and doesnt update. How do I update to the newest patch?

I'd assume that you have to manually flash it with the zip. I'm not sure how it is with a 6p, but with my Oneplus devices that's how it worked.

You can't flash an OTA with TWRP, and you can't take an OTA if you have root/modifications. If you've never rooted or modified in any way you should be able to just flash the stock recovery back and then initiate the OTA process. If you do have root you need to flash the factory images to update. See my guide for details:

Ok, but you need to realise that people could still try whatever you're assuming and posting here. If what you're posting is incorrect, it could cause major problems for them. What I'm saying is this: do your learning for this device first, and then advise people one you know the information you're giving is solid.

I used Heisenberg's method yesterday and it worked well. If you copy the commands into notepad, edit them so the file paths and build numbers are correct you can just copy/paste into the command prompt. All settings will be saved with the exception of a couple of widgets I had to redo.
I will say with the latest update the device seems faster so I feel like it is worth it.

Beginner root question on opp2.170420.019

Hey guys,
This is almost certainly a stupid question but I would be grateful for any help. I have a Nexus 6p thats upgraded to the lastest Android O beta version of OPP2. I wanted to finally go around rooting it. I have enabled USB debugging, always allowed the PC's RSA fingerprint and checked allow OEM unlocking. Nothing else has been done before, I plan on following a step by step guide that will help me unlock bootloader, install custom recovery and root etc.
I tried googling and to my surprise I could not find any root guide for this version of Nexus 6p (maybe I am just blind?)
Just tossing this out there. Old, but should still do what you need. Now that I think about it, I should probably go ahead and update parts of it....
Android Job Box
Woah. Cheers mate! so i just need to plug my Nexus 6p in, execute the file and click on unlock bootloader? I assume i have to install super su after that and that will be it? :3 Sorry. I know i am asking stupid questions and you are obv a pro. Also the fact that my version is opp2.170420.019 makes no difference right?

No, shouldnt make a difference. SHOULDNT. lol
The first thing I would do is download TheFlash's TWRP build, and flash that using the tool once you have your bootloader unlocked. That can be a lifesaver. Let me know if you have any questions. Questions directly about the tool, please post in my tools release thread.
Allrighty then, ill take the plunge real soon! Thank you for all the help Any specific why I should go with TheFlash's build instead of this one: dl.twrp(dot)me/angler/? As far as I can see it only supports F2FS which I will probably not be using.

None, specifically. But he seems to always be ahead of the curve for almost everything he does. And I really like his work. Personal preference I guess.
Well your tool works well Bootlocker unlocked and TWRP isntalled. But i flashed the SR3-SuperSU-v2.79-SR3-20170114223742.zip and nothings happening. there is a super su app in the drawer but when i click it it says super su binary not installed. Dont suppose you would have any idea why this is?
Update: okay false alarm. installed supersu v2.8 and appears to be rooted now. although super su keeps on crashing.
Update2: actually no, not working properly. Some apps are getting root - others arent I guess

Only SuperSU 2.79 SR4 or Magisk v13 will have functional root on Android O.
Magisk:

SuperSU:

Even more unstable lol, built for OPP1 not OPP2 apparently. Phone actually crashing now and rebooting after a few mins. Meh, srsly cold feet, am out. Going to flash it back to stock. hope that works atleast.

It works the same on OPP1 and OPP2. But all in all, you'll have better luck with Magisk v13.
I flashed it to 7.1.1 N4F26T using NRT and now the it has severe lag and keeps freezing and screen isnt accepting touch commands. Since this is a fresh install I assume the RSA fingerprint and USB Debuugging option has been unchecked as well? I have downloaded the official stock image of 7.1.2. Can I apply it using recovery or something?

It won't unless you either 1) Use magisk as mentioned or 2) use a custom kernel with SafeyNet patches.
When you unlock your bootloader, the prop (which you can read using a terminal emulator and typing getprop) has a flag called verifiedbootstate. If it returns anything but green SafeyNet will fail.

Try the latest stable version of Magisk. It worked for me a few days ago while the beta wasn't (beta is working for me lately though).
You might want to reflash stock boot partition before flashing Magisk, I don't know if it will make a difference...

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the stable version with no luck as well. I'll wait for the next beta version, and if that doesn't do the trick ill try reflashing the stock partition. If anyone finds a custom kernel that gets around safety net I'd really appreciate it.

I don't know if this is OP'S reason, but you can boot TWRP without actually installing it... So you can take nandroid backups of an otherwise stock device.
Also, unlocking bootloader wipes your phone, so if you want it stock for now but think you might root in the future you won't have to deal with that...
TBH though, SafetyNet is working as advertised by failing an unlocked bootloader. We like to have our cake and eat it too.

Working fine, yes.
Guys, I'm rooted and usually do NOT get OTAs.
This time the system downloaded 1182 MB of OTA. How do I delete this? I will manually update and don't want the system to do automatically and need my space back.
It says to restart the system to update and that is is already installed. Will my phone crash - since the update won't work as I'm rooted.
Thank got it finally fixed the CaptivePortalLogin crash I was having!
Does this wreck root, etc? (Haven't touched any of that since I bought the phone in Feb or so)

You need to turn off automatic OTA updates in developer options. I've had this happen to me before also though. What I did was was download the factory image to my pc and then plugged my phone in to the pc. Adb reboot bootloader then fastboot the new image. Let the phone restart and then boot to bootloader again and fastboot TWRP. You can then install magisk and be good to go. As long as you can get to fastboot you should be fine.

11..0.4.4 IN11AA

Can someone please paste a link to the 11.0.4.4 global installation file. My Oneplus8 pro is rooted and as such I cannot download it from system updates. I tried to fastboot an unpatched boot but I couldn't get WiFi to turn on. Accordingly, I'd like an alternate download option for 11.0.4.4 global.
Being rooted should not prevent the update. Otherwise download "oxygen updater" from the play store.

In my experience being rooted does prevent updates especially if you've flashed the patched boot image to both slots. In the past I've had his name issue. I got the update to stick when I fastboot flash Boot the original stock boot Image.
Have not seen the full 11.0.4.4 global zip anywhere yet....

I think I'll just live with 2.2 until oxy updated has 4.4. From what I've read 4.4 doesn't really do much. OnePlus sucks anymore.
PS I was finally able to download 2.2 again and I install it (via system update) which got rid of root so I downloaded and installed 4.4. Haven't rooted it yet.

4.4 has improved my battery life somehow.. Seemingly a lot better than it was.
In regards to there updates, I'd say (if you're rooted or not) to use oxygen updater, it's an absolutely rock solid app.
Plus they tend to release way before OnePlus do for each device.
Installation isn't affected by root, simply disable your modules then when prompted to reboot just don't, click install to inactive slot and you're done.
If you've taken an incremental update then I couldn't help you, personally I'd only stick to full updates.
4.4 has definitely improved things for me.

I've been on 11.0.4.4 for about a week now, but I did it using the OTA, not with the full upload. I've been doing it this way for a while, just like I did with my Pixel 2XL.
Anyway, I downloaded the full upload from OnePlus's page a few minutes ago to test it out, and I was able to patch the boot image after extracting it from the payload.bin using the latest beta magisk. I did it on my Pixel 2XL, that's really the only reason I keep that phone around now, besides it being a backup phone just in case my OP8P craps out.

Great idea! I never thought of patching the stock boot.img on another device. It worked and now I'm finally rooted. Thank you for sharing your idea! BTW my former phone was a Pixel2XL. Was that the best phone ever? Still is but I sold it when I bought my 8pro. Big mistake!
