Unique warning for April update: SM-G930U - Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

I run my household off Tmobile's cell and unlimited data. I've bypassed throttle through routing my phone by changing the TTL of my PC (or routing it through a repeater that mangles the TTL). Loved loved loved the G930U stock UNTIL today. Just did the April update (CSC Version G930UOYM4BRD1) and boom, gone. I'm by no means a developer/hacker; but redoing global DUN did nothing, resetting the phone and resetting the router did nothing. All the old tricks of been patched AFAIK. Gonna have to downgrade, ugh. Just a warning to everyone if you're in a similar situation as I am. USB tether still works (Foxfi/PDAnet), but they're hovering at about 1/5 the speed I get from regular hotspot mode.

No data after having WiFi enabled for a while

Hello,
I've had this issue across more than 1 device and more than 1 carrier.
Here's what happens:
I enable WiFi, and for a while everything works as expected. I can send and receive MMS messages. I can disable WiFi and go back to my 4G connection.
The problem is, after an unknown amount of time, the phone drops the 4G connection in the background. I only know when I can't receive/send MMS messages anymore. At that point, if I disable WiFI there's no 4G data connection, and I have to turn Airplane mode off and turn it back on.
This is really annoying. It happened to me using Sprint and a Galaxy S4 (both stock and custom ROMs) and it's happening to me with a Galaxy S5 from MetroPCS. (I've used the stock Metro ROMs, Stock T-mobile ROMs, and Custom T-mobile ROMs).
Right now I'm using a Stock T-mobile ROM with the latest firmware, carrier is MetroPCS.
What can I do so this doesn't happen? It's really frustrating.
Thank you for your time.

Hello.
That's already disabled.
Should I enable it?
I tried with "smart network switch" enabled and disabled and problem still happened.
My S5 G900F Android 5.00 (Smart Network Switch disabled, Power Save disabled) on EE UK has had this problem for 9 months after phone upgraded itself to Lollipop (EE win the accolade to being the SLOWEST ON THE PLANET to provide Android updates.....). Since Jan 3, my wife's G901, a couple of weeks after it upgraded from 5.0 to 5.02, has developed the same problem. Neither phone has ever been rooted or other.
I have fruitlessly searched everywhere for a solution without success. EE Customer Services Tier 2 & Samsung's own service centre have failed to fix it. EE & Samsung blame each other for 5.1 or 5.1.1 not being available for download. Neither is prepared to resolve the issue despite hours on the phone. Have tried Safe Mode, Factory Reset, clearing everything, reloading APNs & Samsung even reloaded Android. All a waste of time: Many many days of it!
After approx half an hour connected to Wi-Fi, only way to get the mobile data to connect, is either reboot, enter & exit Air-plane mode or flip the 4G > 3G > 4G connection under More Networks. Have tested the fault in different cell areas countries and continents; fault is same everywhere.
It seems there are quite a few sufferers of this problem.
Samsung S5 keeps losing data connection
I have the same problem. My new Samsung phone loses the data connection (even though data is turned on) and I can only re-connect by restarting the phone. The first EE shop I took it to couldn't help at all. The second gave me a new SIM - that didn't work. Then I tried online support and after 3.5 hours of my life, in which I was passed on from one person to another, they completed a factory re-set - which didn't work (and additionally lost all the personalisation of my screen and some of my contacts). So I now have a not-very-smart phone which I have to re-start every time I want to use data. This is a business contract and the phone is less than two months old, but I'm not getting any effective support from EE. Android version is 5.0.2
me too, since last update. and app 'phono' shows "mobile data off" not got a time on it, but when i leave wifi coverage, it wont reconnect to cell data 2g/3g/4g. flightmode toggle to restore.
Abandon hope if you have this intermittent mobile data problem!
...at least until there is a software update, though I have no idea if that will help.
I have now tried a new sim card, a factory reset, and a replacement phone - which was provided only because I'm a business customer and I found a sympathetic member of staff. *By the way, I was told that if you are personal customer they won't consider replacing your phone if it is more than a month old - even if you started complaining about the phone as soon as you got it, the chances are a month will have elapsed by the time they put you through the hoops of a new sim, reset etc - and then it is too late to insist on a replacement phone.
In any case the replacement phone didn't resolve the issue so I have reached* a dead end. My phone fails to connect to data after having been connected to wifi - you have to do it manually each time you move away from a wifi connnection. At first I was doing it by restarting the phone, but am now following the advice of someone else who has the same problem and am going into flight mode and out again. *
This is not satisfactory, and it seems from reading forums that EE are to blame for the problem rather than Samsung, but I'm not 100% sure about that.*
Possible solution that works, for me, at the moment!
Having suffered this issue of my S5 (SM-G901F) not connecting to mobile data after being on Wi-Fi for a while unless switching airplane mode on/off for a few weeks; although it has probably been happening since the update I received late December; I have tried all of the turn this switch off, factory resets (x2), etc, etc, etc. and Googled the issue without success.
I have found this thread interesting, and I even tried calling EE support only to be told "you have tried everything that we would tell you to do" and "it wouldn't be a sim card, or handset issue, sounds like software". The reply was basically that like-it or lump it until the 5.1 update is released "by Samsung not EE because EE do not release Android updates". [Perhaps EE don't release the updates, but the stock rom is tested by them and their bloatware added before they eventually release it!!!]
Following my last reset I tried selectively re-installing the apps I used incase that was causing the issue. No Luck!
One last thing I tried was to look at every system 'thing' that I could find which used/switched any part of the mobile/mobile data/wifi - in addition to the settings I had already tried (all of which were mentioned in this thread previously). One thing I could not find not mentioned here, or anywhere, was the VoWi-Fi call on/off which I had always set to on as I do not live in a great reception area. Calling over Wi-Fi is great when you don't have a strong mobile signal.
Having 'played' with this setting for the last 24 hours I have found that the VoWi-Fi on/off appears to be a possible cure - for me anyway.:fingers-crossed:
When VoWi-Fi was set to off and leaving the phone connected to Wi-Fi overnight, the S5 immediately switched to mobile data this morning when I turned the Wi-Fi off . It continued to switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data all morning whilst out and about in and out of Wi-Fi connections - Woop Woop!!!
I then tried switching VoWi-Fi on (with Wi-Fi on and at home), leaving the phone for a number of hours, only to find that when I turned Wi-Fi off the phone refused to connect to mobile data even with a 'decent' mobile signal. The only way to get it to connect was to go back to switching Airplane mode on/off.
Switched VoWi-Fi off again, left Wi-Fi connected, left the phone for a couple of hours, etc. and hey-presto immediately switched to mobile data when I turned the Wi-Fi off. [Dances around the room because he's got the S5 automatically switching to mobile data again. Even though I'm at home with a great fibre internet and strong Wi-Fi connection!!!]
I do not know if this could be a solution for the others who are suffering from this issue, but it appears to be a solution for me at the moment. I thought I would share as your previous posts have helped me and you all seem to be pulling your hair out; like I have been; trying to find a solution.
Try it, it may work, but don't shoot me if it doesn't!
It's encouraging to know that I'm not crazy. I've had this issue across two devices and carries.
John,
Thank for your suggestion about WiFi calling. Unfortunately, I always have it off! I never used it, so maybe I should try turning it on? We'll see lol.
At this point, I think this is going to be my last Galaxy line phone.
Is it wi-fi calling that's causing the problem?
I have wondered if there is a link with wi-fi calling, but haven't tested it properly. I signed up with ee and bought the Galaxy phone specifically so that I could use wifi calling, as the town where I live (in the Scottish Borders) doesn't get a mobile signal strong to work reliably indoors from any of the networks. I'll try turning off wi-fi calling to see if that sorts the data thing (though I see that for one person above it did not). That would mean I wouldn't get calls or texts when I'm at home so it would not be a permanent solution for me. But in fact the wi-fi calling is not reliable anyway....

Brian,
You never know the way things are going with this issue; given that nobody seems to be able to pinpoint the fault; turning it on may just sort it!!!

Cannot connect to school Wi-fi

I've had my S7 Edge (Verizon, Android 6.0.1, stock Samsung) for, a week, and have been trying to connect to my school's wi-fi with zero success. My attempt is met with:
"Authentication error. Credentials not valid. Incorrect password."
Settings
Security:
802.1xEAP
EAP method:
PEAP
Phase 2 authentication:
MSCHAPV2
Identity:
<my school username, which I have verified with my laptop, and school computers)
Anonymous identity
<none>
Password
<my password, which I have verified on laptop and school computers)
The phone is able to connect to my home Wi-Fi without issue.
I have been able to connect to the school's wifi with my S4 and my laptop with no problem.
I've rebooted the phone, "forgotten" the network several times (with rebooting before attempting to access again).
I've forgotten the network, shut off wifi, shut off the phone, drove to lunch, come back, restarted the phone, turned on wifi, sacrificed a goat (just kidding, NSA), and tried to reconnect, to no avail.
I've check with my IT dept, and they were unable to help. They are, for obvious reasons, unwilling to reboot the router to try that.
With stock Samsung, I'm unable to change wi-fi freq (or, at least, I haven't been able to figure out where to do that).
I've searched online for fixes, and searched through the forum, and haven't found anything I haven't already tried, or are unable to try (ie, router reboot).
I'm completely at a loss here. I'd really prefer not to use my data when there's a perfectly good wi-fi network available...
Any of you smart folk have an idea?
similar issue
I too am facing the same issue. With bit of research it looks like a bug in android 6.0.1 which was patched in later revisions of 6.0.1 which samsung have't updated.
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=188867
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/broken-wifi-peap-android-m-marshmallow-t3221066
Apparently, there is a simple workaround if we have root, But we are stuck at this point.
I guess this problem could be solved only if Samsung updates the software with merges from newer versions of android or if we get root.
Anyways, post here if anybody finds a solution to this.
I may as well add a "Me too" to this one and a bit of more information.
For me, I have a Galaxy Note 4 for AT&T and it is stock and up-to-date, still connecting to the work WiFi (802.1x EAP -> PEAP username & password) with zero issues.
My Galaxy Note 4 with Verizon (work phone) WAS working until it got updated to 5.01 and then it broke the WiFi to 802.1x, just sits there and says connecting.
Phone (Verizon) got two more updates since then but nothing fixed it.
So, I had them upgrade my phone to the Galaxy S7 (not Edge) and lo and behold, STILL broken! And in the past three days, there has been two OTA updates to the phone, but neither one fixed the issue.
So, I would like to know if it is just Verizon, holding back the patches, or maybe I am lucky because I can still use my personal phone (AT&T) on the company WiFi?
If this is going to be a long drawn out battle to get Verizon to fix it, I think I have just enough clout to get my work phone moved to AT&T as I should not have to use my personal phone for work, even if it is not costing anything (WiFi).
Can anyone confirm the S7 for AT&T works ?
How about the Note 5 on Verizon? (probably not).
Waiting with everyone else. . .

Tether/Hotspot killed by OTA b33 and/or b34 Updates? [TMO, Unlocked, H2O]

Reached out on AF, but see some really model-specific discussion here, so thought I ought to ask here as well...
I grabbed my $45 Walmart Family Plan/T-Mobile ZMAX last year, and unlocked it for use on H2O.
All was well on 4.4.2. for a long time, but I did have some dropouts and 3G downspeeds at times, and thought the VOLTE and Band 12 upgrade might solve things. I didn't really need root, so just waited and considered the OTA updates.
Well, in a weak moment, I relented. As soon as completed, I found web browsing seems the same, if not a little slower, despite my seeing the 4GLTE icon more often than before, but real regret set in pretty soon after.
Now, it's stupid of me not to run it through it's paces after b33 to know if it was just this and not b34, but after both updates completed, I found I couldn't tether successfully, nor access the mobile hotspot anymore.
In both circumstances, my laptop connects, but declares no internet connection found despite the successful connection.
I've tried all the proposed setting changes mentioned in old threads despite their more being about the MetroPCS version than the T-Mobile one I have (adding dun to the APN, creating a new APN, putting it into Airplane mode before changing to either connection, etc, etc.)
As you can imagine, no success.
So, I'm desperate to know....
Has this specifically happened to anyone else?
Is there a way to recover this functionality?
Sadly, I kinda depend on this function as I have Carpel Tunnel, and using the laptop for extensive email is easier on my hands.
Thanks for any advice!
I have constant issues with what your describing and it all started with this throttling nonsense, and tmo MPcs, turning into data Nazis, on a crusade to put a limit on unlimited. Apparently the USB drivers for this device have deliberately left a few things out in order to restrict 3rd party usb tethering. The only avail USB tethering are the native tethering/hotspot options. Which once throttled start giving me network grief, usually after about an hour or so and using my phone to surf (while still tethered) that no internet exclamation disappears and I can start laptopping, not always though. Only tried and true guarantee for me is using Easy Tether Pro to emulate USB over Bluetooth which even not throttled maxes out at < 3mbps sucks but good enough for XBMC and Netflix. Foxfi has the same feature but uses the Dun protocol which doesn't work for me problems with improper installation most likely, I use pdanet foxfi for my wireless hotspot data.
Sucks just a few months ago I was averaging 275gb a month at > 50mbps with my rooted s4, now I'm lucky to break 50gb at a snail's pace

Verizon hotspot provisioning

Has Verizon come up with a new way of detecting hotspot users who have otherwise stayed under the radar? For the last several months, since updating to the unlimited verizon plan, I have been able to use the hotspot without any issues, using on average, 50-70gb per month, most of this on hotspot. This month, however, they are somehow able to see that I am using hotspot, and have throttled hotspot connections down to 600kbps. On the handset, I am able to continue to get 20-30Mbps on average. Have they changed their methods of detection somehow? How are they doing this?
This issue popped up when running XDABBEB's vs980 image. I have also tried a few things to get around this, all to no avail:
Ran LineageOS 14.1 ROM
Ran latest crDRoid ROM
edited build.prop to include "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" at the bottom
ran "settings put global tether_dun_required 0" from a root prompt ...
A few of the various downloadable mods, though they are all a bit old and and they all seem to deal with modifying hotspotprovision.apk… This file doesn’t even exist on my current ROM (crDroid) ...
None of these have been able to remove the speed cap. Anyone have any ideas?
I'm also interested in understanding if there is anything we can do regarding this matter.
Verizon started to see tethering within the past day or so from my Nexus 6 running Pure Nexus 7. It was previously not seen by them so it is not your phone or software. I just noticed it and this is the first thread I've come across raising the issue.
Data on my Nexus 6p and my brothers Pixel XL is being detected as well. This is terrible news and we need a workaround asap! I've tried the TTL fix but I'm not sure if it's working yet or not.
I manage 6 lines that have run into this beginning in September. For the past 6 months or so we've had no problems until recently.
We have found a work around that seems to be working for two individuals with rooted Droid Turbos using PIA. However, it does not work while they are using their Chromecast.
What is the TTL fix? I'd like to try that. I can report back if it works.
What I’ve read that works is vpn tether and using a vpn. I want to try just got on unlimited plan and Verizon is my ISP lol

Hotspot working?

Has anyone been able to get hotspot back working since 8.1 update. I am not rooted and it was working great until update. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Mine works fine 8.1 with June security update. Worked fine on may security update too. I have only had the device since May though so no idea about prior to that.
Working fine on 8.1 - June.
No issues, it just works.

Check your protocol and password.
If your iMac can tether, you don't have an issue with the phone.

Which carrier?
Is it part of your plan?
Sprint. Not part of plan.
did you find a solution? you dont have to have a plan. I have had ph1 since october 2017. it worked out of the box till i think 8.1. i am getting connection no problem, no internet getting thru?
I am having the same issue, was working fine, devices can connect to it now, but no internet.
Digging up graves here, but anyone ever find a solution for this? Mine was working fine also and suddenly dropped off. I don't use hotspot often so I cannot pin-point any specific changes or updates that caused it to stop. I can use data on the phone while hotspot is active but nothing connected thru the hotspot has an outside connection. I believe I was able to ping google but it doesn't allow any "meaningful" data thru.
Using:
Stock 8.1.0
July 5 security patch
ElementalX 3.06 kernel
Build: OPM1.180104.267
Thanks

Thank you for your reply.
I should have specified in my reply that I had already set the dun global.
Just for the sake that *maybe I forgot*, I tried it again through ADB and still no joy.
I ran a speed test on my phone while on LTE and received 16+ Mbps. During the test (Pic attached).
I then ran a speed test on my PC through the wifi hotspot and received less than 1 Mbps. (Pic attached).
As control for this experiment, I placed the phone on my usual shelf where I used to place it all the time when hotspot *was* working. I had mobile hotspot turned on and my PC was connected at the time of testing.
I tap start on the speed test screen and walk away from the phone, wait about 2 minutes and go to my PC for speed test; the phone was entirely untouched while BOTH speed tests were running.

I thought changing the dun global circumvented that. I do not have tethering on my plan, I'm grandfathered into an ancient unlimited plan from like 12 years ago. I used to be able to hotspot 100+ gigs at full speed until recently.
My plan hasn't changed; I've been buying phone's from swappa purposely so I can keep my plan as is.

Frustrating. I saw earlier posts about going back to June or July update and it's working; maybe I'll have to try that and report back.
Thanks again for offering assistance
all you have to do is add this line: "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" to the very end of the build.prop file. If I don't do this Sprint will throttle me. Not my work just passing along from here in these parts somewhere.
