How to enable soft keys without root? - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hi folks, I'm having a play with ADB on my Axon 7 and doing a little alteration and debloat whilst maintaining the certified and stock status for updates and root checking apps. It started with "fixing" the inability to data tether off my work SIM card, although I could tether ok from my personal SIM. I'd already looked at the APN settings for it but with no success and after some googling around I did find the information on this issue and have used ADB to fix it, now on here tethering with it
Next I did some user app de-bloating and the phone feels faster, more responsive. Now I want to enable soft keys so need to alter build.prop but when I try to pull the file with ADB it fails to find it. Has anyone managed this already and found the answer?

You can try this application.

Thanks, I did look on the Play Store. I was hoping to simply enable the built in nav bar though. There was an app that looks stock and has extended function but can also be combined with an ADB pushed mod to allow it to work fully but that gives me security concerns. Ideally the hiding Huawei nav bar would be perfect. I miss it from my Mate 7

well, the navbar can be hidden in MiFavor 5.
Don't you think it's about time you rooted it? You're probably pretty sure it has no factory defects by now, and the warranty thing is very shady atm with this huge crapshootery going on (not that you can't send it unlocked or just relock it).
I'm just saying, you could probably benefit at least from build.prop changes, or maybe from MiFavor 5.0 or some custom ROM.
p.s. it's not like you won't be able to install an official O OTA if it comes. you just enter TWRP, install the stock recovery img, then reboot and update

[HOWTO] disable OTA software update notification on KitKat

Basically as most of us know, updating to android L will remove root and custom recovery, also there are not many stable custom roms out yet for our G3 so many of us are still on stock rooted KitKat (It is also better than many of us expected with a cool remote control app that i don't think has been ported to custom roms yet). It even has option to hide and disable many bloatware apps (thanks LG). The annoying thing is that we get a pesky notification every day to update software. This should help everyone remove that notification, and don't worry should you change your mind the same method can re-enable it.
depending on your model go to dialer and enter hidden system settings.
some models here: if you have another model just google how to get to system settings (hidden)
Intl. LG G2 D855: 3845#*855#
AT&T LG G3 D850: 3845#*850#
T-Mobile LG G3 D851: 3845#*851#
Sprint LG G3 LS980: 5689#*990#
Verizon LG G3: ##228378 + send
Bell LG G3 D852: 3845#*852#
after you are in the hidden system settings:
- WLAN Test
- OTA Option
- disable or enable.
I just tried this so this isn't 100% verified working, will take a day or two to be sure it works but i've found cases of people saying it works on other sites so I thought i'd share it here, any feedback is appreciated as to if it works on all models etc.
- on my D852 bell version this actually DID NOT WORK ^^^... i'm going to leave it there because of reports it works on some models. check below for a working mod for D852
However BELOW is a fix that did work for me.
grab this app from play store : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice&hl=en
go to system apps > Software Update > DMNotiService
- uncheck that service, grant root access, then reboot and wait and see if you get the notifcations still. I'm pretty sure this will work but obviously only time will tell. I dont think this will do any harm because you can re-enable the service should any apps start to malfunction, however as usual you are responsible for modifications you make to your device. It's been 3 days or so since I did this and I haven't seen a OTA update notification.
Hope this helps a few people out there
~ KS
this didn't work for me actually, about 12 hours after i applied it on d852 i got the software update notification; i've tried applying it again will report back if it works or not.
You can just hold the notification down go to app options and uncheck the show notifications option. And 90% of what you said about lollipop is not valid anymore.

If you just flash a lollipop ROM from recovery you don't lose anything. Bu i agree with you on the stability part.
code works for Verizon to access hidden menu but there is no WLAN Test option only Device Test; ELT Test; Log Enable. Anyone else been able to use this route to disable this OTA notification?

k so btw the unchecking of notification options is disabled in my version so that method must only be for some variants... and what exactly did i say about L that isn't valid anymore?

if you want to try the method i just posted on the original post it's a good lead, although if you are on another variant the software update app could have another name, you should be able to locate the app by seeing what app info screen you end up when long pressing the notification when you get it. I have a hunch this is going to be the universal fix because when i used this app i noticed the software update in google framework is already disabled by default so thats probably why the builtin method didn't work but we are still guessing so far that's just a thought.

İf that doesn't work you can use titanium backup to freeze app updates, software updates and update center apps. That's a solid fix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2961073
That's the latest rooted stock lollipop.

that's for d855 and the titanium backup might work but freezing the entire app can cause more problems then disabling the notification, some of the other services are responsible for updating some of the stock apps like quick remote (i think) and personally i want those updated i just don't want to lose root
Kronic,
So I followed your suggestion by downloading that app. Opened it up and went into System Updates (my phone doesn't have Software Updates) but didn't find a DmNotiService option. I do however have a DmDownloadService that is checked and highlighted in blue. I'm wondering if this is it. Any ideas? Also do you know what the significance of something in blue is? I see red means it has been unchecked by can't figure out blue. Thanks for investigating this. Look forward to hearing your input on this.

my phone doesn't have system updates so that is probably just the same app with a different name; I would try to disable it and see if your update notifications go away, if anything else goes wrong you can always re-enable it later.
I'm not sure why the DmDownloadService is highlighted blue but if that service is inside the system update app it's probably the service that actually downloads the update where as the noti service is just giving you the notification. I haven't tried disabling the download service because i don't think it will ever run on it's own without you clicking the update, and if it does it's probably already ran... not too sure to be honest. It's been a few days since i disabled the DMNotiService on my phone though and i haven't seen an update notification since so i'm happy as a clam
So I forgot to write back. I skipped this completely, downloaded Titanium Backup and just froze the entire System Update folder which is what the update notification is linked to. Once I did that I rebooted the phone and not one update since. Been quite a few days and nothing so I'm almost positive it worked.

Another update for Z3

Another update!
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Softw...mware-update-for-the-Xperia-Z3-and/m-p/980932
Ensured the lock screen / notification bar doesn’t indicate “no service” when the device has coverage
Added a Sony feature; bringing back the "close-all-button" in the activity menu, so you can easily close all apps at once
Unblocked devices with server policies (such as Exchange Active Sync for e-mail), to enable the new Lollipop lock-screen notifications
Ensured the LED light is lit across all sound modes - and no longer offset by “silent”
Made the necessary fixes to enable the easy movement of content from internal memory to external microSD card (something we saw affecting a few devices)
Improved messaging functionality in Ultra stamina mode – some conversations could not be opened before in Ultra stamina mode
Finally a fix for the lockscreen notifications not showing if syncing Exchange with locking code policy!
Already flashed a rooted zip and running flawlessly with Xposed and everyhing
The notifications should have been fixed in 23.1.A.0.726 though, but I never got around to try it(it never appeard in OTA either).
Quick question, if I update using OTA will I loose root and recovery?

No you wont lose root or recovery if you OTA update just make sure you've not deleted any of the pre-installed apps other wise the OTA will fail to install.
update has popped up on my Z3 and says "could not verify"
im not really bothered about the update, how can i get rid of the notification? cant seem to clear it

Hey, I have the same thing.
I'm rooted and just checked, that I have uninstalled the "small apps" components. Do I need to install them to get rid of this annoying notification or other steps could be taken?
Edit:
I managed to close it with titanium, just hit "backup" on update center. However, before that I changed the setting 'don't update automatically'.
Cheers.

Can you provide the zip
Omnikai has already posted a link to one..
Can I just flash that over what I'm currently using? do I need to wipe anything?! I don't want to lose my application data
I flashed the zip I made myself without loosing anything, just wiped dalvik/cache.
Can you possibly upload the one you made??!
It's a Norwegian/Telenor specific rom, I guess you'd rather have the Nordic Generic from that link
And I don't have the zip available here, and no places to uploads.. Sorry.

S7 Mini 'Ads' on startup.

Hi Guys,
The last few days I've been getting 'Ads' on the home screen every time I login. Figured I (or the kids) had installed something stupid =/
Today I did a full factory reset, only to get an 'Ad' on the home screen with in minutes of resetting. And before I'd installed any apps or apk's
Anyone else having this problem? Or have a solution to it?
Just coming back to android and still a little lost.
Thanks Guys.

Just read a few comments and that's bad to put ads in the firmware.
Looks like root is your best option to delete and remove. But then no more updates.
I'm waiting for a custom ROM but it's slow progress as there's not many Devs.

As far as i know, No. The ota update needs stock boot image / loader to do its thing.
I haven't found a reliable guide on how to unpack the update and flash it manually via twrp, but i think its possible.
I've got some issue with my laptop which means it won't recognise the phone in flashtools & therefore can't fix it if it does mess up.

Good News
Looks like Daniel-David has found a work round, post #47 on this page:
http://bbs.elephone.hk/thread-13381-5-1.html
Seems its the default launcher.
Quick run down:
1º- Install Nova Launcher (I tried with this one, maybe other ones also works)
2º- Set as default, keeping press the button, select always Nova.
3º- Go to settings - apps - show system apps
4º- Search for Launcher 3 and force stop
5º- In the same screen go to Permissions and disable all
6º- Go back and in Storage, clear data and clear cache
7º- Go to main screen of apps and tap in the gear
8º- Go to Modify system settings
9º- Up in the right corner tap the three points and show system
10º- Search Launcher 3 and disable "Allow modify system settings"
11º- Go back and go to "Draw over others apps"
12º- Up in the right corner tap the three points and show system
13º- Search Launcher 3 and disable "Permit drawing over other apps"
Worked for me.
@nickzeptepi,
Is it possible to 'Root' the phone, un install the launcher, then un 'Root' in order to get OTA updates?
p.s. I could probably help fix your laptop, but your on your own with the ROM. =/
I had the same issue with the ads and uninstalled Elephone's Service-App which let the ads disappear (needs root).
anucios de inicio y desbloqueo
yo lo he solucionado cambiando el launcher de inicio y desinstalando el que trae de fabrica
This thing is so annoying, just moved to android, cant believe this s*** happens.
has anyone found a solution without root?

"Battery level full" - Any solutions to disabling this notification?

I am running rooted Swift and Fast B170 ROM on one XT and stock B180 on another and have yet to find a way to disable this seemingly system based notification. On my rooted device I tried to install Xposed but ran into a boot loop issue after installing the framework so I am inclined to think that isn't a possible route to a solution. The OS notification center is pretty useless in managing app notifications and the battery notification doesn't seem to be tied to a specific app anyway.
Does anyone have any ideas how to disable the notification?
So I ended up disabling the System UI notifications all together. And that works but I'm pretty sure its going to disable other important notifications controlled by System UI. If anyone has any true solutions let me know.
Xposed can be installed on the Ascend XT. Search for my Xposed thread. I'm using Magisk Systemless Xposed v87.1.
Why not just swipe away the battery full notification. Yes, you've probably killed other things too by disabling SystemUI.

yes it can pop up at the most inopportune time and its honestly a useless notification in the bar that is distracting. notifications shouldnt be in the bar that i should ignore.
@mattzeller and like i said before i tried installing Xposed before i believe the regular installer and that went fine but when i installed the framework and rebooted it kept boot looping at the android logo and i had to reflash the Swift and Fast ROM.
I plan on exploring the Xposed install that divineBliss mentioned I just need to backup my current ROM first and then double check all of the steps required. I hope it works. cause it really is a distracting notification.

Using systemless Xposed is a fairly straightforward process. This is the way I got it working on mine since Magisk wouldn't flash because of the modified boot.img and would only modify stock, you don't have to flash the ROM like I did, but I was doing cleanup and reflash anyway.
1. Download all required files and put them on your external SD card.
a. Swift&Fast: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=72258982
b. Magisk: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=68966662
2. Make sure you have the correct boot.img for the firmware version you are using, can't use B160 boot.img on B170 ROM, it causes wifi problems. I extracted boot.img from @madvane20 's Swift&Fast ROM since that's what I am running.
3. Do all necessary wipes and flash ROM, do NOT reboot yet.
4. Flash extracted boot.img (select img in TWRP to show *.img files) do NOT reboot yet.
5. Flash Magisk (I'm using current/stable)
6. Wipe caches and reboot.
7. Boot your phone, open Magisk Manager and go to Downloads and install Xposed Framework (SDK 23). I got an error here trying to download and install. I fixed it by adding the folder Magiskmanager to internal sdcard.
8. Download and install latest Xposed installer for systemless Xposed. The link for that is in the Magisk module information for Xposed.
9. Reboot (got a kitK Kat? It's gonna be a while) and everything should be working.
Occasionally after a reboot you can't open settings(Xposed issue), just reboot again, should clear that up.

Although I'm sure there's a way via xposed to disable the notification, I haven't found it yet. The xEMUI module has some nice tweaks, but nothing related to that.
Perhaps via appOpsXposed, or via stopReceiverBroadcasts... remove the ability for SystemUI to see the charging related events..?

Few Questions reg magisk, recovery and OTA updates

Hi all,
Basically I want to root my mobile without loosing access to my corporate mail and banking app (which doesnt work on rooted mobiles - and which I assume will work with magisk). I have below queries if anyone can answer will be grateful
1) I want to use adaway, font changer, build.prop hack for api2, all mods in this thread https://goo.gl/PZYFZH & https://goo.gl/fgDMWu (Some of them req twrp). Will I still be able to access corporate mail ?
2) can I just unroot and re-lock bootloader to get and install OTA
3) Will I lose data after point 2
1. as long as you enable Magisk hide + specify your email/banking apps in the menu, you should be able to use them. You might be out of luck if you use Xposed though (it breaks Safetynet).
2. when OTA arrives, restore stock boot image from Magisk, apply OTA and when the phone asks for a reboot, install Magisk to the second, updated partition. After reboot you'll have updated and rooted system.
3. there is no need to relock the bootloader, so no risk of data loss.

Thanks a lot. I installed magisk. Everything is good so far. Any good modules/mod/hacks can you suggest please
Also Reg 2nd point, i dont mind losing all the data. Just in case anything happens, can I flash stock rom, and get the phone back in mint condition?
You can relock the bootloader as long as you have stock kernel, recovery and system. Lazy way is to uninstall magisk ("restor stock boot image"), the safest way is to download stock rom and flash it (with or without data wipe). Btw. Xiaomi is the first phone which did not perform factory reset while unlocking the bootloader, so it's possible that you will lose nothing during relocking.
Personally I'm using these modules/mods from repository:
1. Google framework - to be able to install Google phone dialer from play store
2. Google lens enabler - to be able to use..Google lens
3. Greenify4Magisk
4. Xposed
+
5. Custom made module with these build.prop fixes - enable EIS, camera2api, add more volume steps, fix voice recording noise (there is similar module available at XDA with additional mods which I wasn't interested in)

If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't support nearby places search and caller ID, the only two features which are missing in stock Mi A1 dialer But with Google framework + unmodded Google dialer, everything works fine. There is only one disadvantage - if you install Google dialer and then boot phone without Google framework module enabled, it will disappear from installed apps and mess up dialer permissions and settings and you'll need to reinstall it later. But IMHO it's worth the risk
