Hey guys I just got the HTC HD2 about 2 weeks ago and love the phone but hate windows mobile. It freezes up all the time for hardly any reason (I tried to turn the alarm off and it froze for example) so I'm trying to figure out if it's possible yet to load Android onto the phone (or if not how soon it may be available). I've searched through the forum a bit and haven't found anything.
If anyone can tell me and also give a somewhat detailed instruction on how to load it on the phone (I'm a former iphone user so I know almost nothing about these or winmo)

If you searched, I don't know why you haven't found any of the many threads about this. No android yet... it will be a while before there is a well working port. If you hate WinMo, why did you get a WinMo phone?

You have two options.
1. Read, Read, Read. Learn that the phone you have is quite capable and with a little bit of tweaking is an incredible phone.
2. Return it immediately for a full and prompt refund.

And for those app-happy people, do your research BEFORE buying your phones. It's not as if WinMo is new to the scene and there isn't any information about what is available for that phone OS.
There should be a sticky in the HD2 forums: "If you are an Android/iPhone user who just bought an HD2 and are wondering if you should take the phone back....take it back! And next time....RESEARCH!"
I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but it seems that more people who buy this without doing their research on the phone wind up taking it back anyway.
i'm the opposite. i bought an iphone and wished i had gotten the hd2. fortunately, i was able to switch them out and am loving the hd2.

Android will prob be ported over, i think sometime end of june or early july. When the EVO 4G comes out shouldnt be hard for them to port the ROM over from their..But be patient. the DEVS do this for free so we shouldnt be complaing..

The end of june or july? They probably will have a bootable port by then, but I doubt it will be very functional. The EVO rom might help them out with some drivers, but it won't be easily ported over. I wouldn't expect a fully functional rom for at least 6 months to a year. These things take time and are not easy. I have been watching their progress and discussions on the irc chat logs for months now... and while they are making great progress, there is still a huge amount to do and drivers to get working.

I'm new here, but have been lurking and scouring the forums for a while now. I'm not a dev or anything, so I'm a total noob when it comes to cooking up roms and such... although I've done pleanty of flashing on different devices. I'm treating myself to a new phone as a late birthday present, and the HD2 looks like the best offering at the moment (or anytime soon) from T-Mobile. I just don't want to be stuck with such awesome hardware, running an OS that will be mostly obselete in a few months.
I've read that MS will continue to support WM 6.5, but we all know their deal... it'll be an afterthought once WP7 is released. I would be fine with upgrading to WP7, but unfortunately the HD2 has two too many buttons to meet the HW requirements (according to MS at this point.)
The main thing that makes me believe porting Android would be more plausible, is the upcoming release of the EVO. The hardware is so similar, it's hard for me to believe that it's not possible. Once the EVO is released, could someone use the Android 2.1 image from it, and modify it to run on the HD2? Again, I'm not a programmer, so I'm probably completely wrong... but would love to be proven otherwise.
I'm just looking for some of you with more knowledge and experience to give me some technical insight before dropping $450 on a new phone that will be out-of-date and no longer supported (for the most part) in 6 months. I would also like to keep this thread on topic, so please don't bother slagging the HD2 and suggesting other devices.

if you want the phone, get the phone. Winows mobile is a good and highly customizable operating systme on its own and I like it.
you won't regret getting this phone, I sold my nexus one for it, and I don't even miss N1 (simply because it is not the best android phone anymore, HD 2 the best winmo up to date).
I am also a noob, but I encourage myself very often. Now android can run on iphone, what else would stop those geniuses from creating such miracles on HD2. All I have to do is enjoying the phone from the minute I have it, and stick to the forum.
I wouldn't buy the HD2 purely on the speculation of an Android port. There's no certainty that it will ever happen, and if it does, who knows how long it will take.
There are ports for older HTC models and the iPhone, but you have to keep in mind that those handsets have been out for a while, and have had many months, if not years, of development behind them. The HD2 and the snapdragon processor are relatively new, and development is starting from the ground up. It may take up to a year or more before a functional android port is available, and by then, there will more than likely be better hand-sets out there.

I've actually searched many times, and read tons of threads on this topic. The problem is, most of them are cluttered with TONS of vague info and flaming, with a tidbit of useful info here and there. I was hoping to open some discussion and spark some ideas or interest, maybe try and centralize the info.
Sorry for stepping on any toes, but this is the "T-Mobile USA HD2" general discussion forum, so I figured this would be the best place to start. I just searched the development forum and found a similar thread. I just didn't check there, as I was intending to discuss the possibility and such, not actual developing. Mods, if I'm out of line here, please move or lock this thread appropriately.

this is true. android on the iphone only works on the iphone 2g as far as i can tell, and that phone is over 4 years old i believe. building linux kernels for a specific phone takes time, and most likely it'll take years to perfect. the ports out now for older winmo phones are useable but obviously not perfect.
i bought my hd2 mainly because it looks like pure sex to me. hehe. windows mobile didnt bother me at all since ive been using windows mobile phones since 2007. dont get me wrong, android is pretty good too. used that for about a year. each os has its own pros and cons i guess.

you wont regret getting this phone. in my opinion htc did a good job with sense, making windows mobile user friendly and whatnot, but if you dont like sense, it can be easily disabled. also the stock rom to me works fine right now but there are a lot of other roms made for the hd2 already so its pretty customizable as is already.

I usually try to keep from modding straight away, but after checking some roms in the development forum, I'm sure I'll start flashing sooner than later, hehe. The main thing I'm liking about the HD2 is it comes stock with the apps I'm most likely to use. I had a 2g iPhone a while back, but found I didn't use most of the apps I installed, and gave it up for a 3g device. Most of what I'm looking for is games/entertainment and themes, and I believe I've found what I'm looking for. If I'm not happy, I may try to cook up something of my own... there's certainly pleanty of resources here to get me started!
Again, I apologize for the redundant thread, but I appreciate all the feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for!

They have been working on porting linux and android to the HD2 for months now. It's not an easy process, as I have stated in the many threads that get started about this. The EVO rom cannot just be ported over. The N1 is just as close hardware wise... they actually used the N1 as a starting point for creating the linux kernel. The Evo may help a little with some drivers.
You have to understand... the kernel for the msm72xx devices (touchpro, TP2, kaiser, etc.) was started over 3 years ago... and they still don't have a fully-functional android port. There will be an android port eventually, but by time theres a fully functional port, there will be many nicer android phones out. Expect it to take a year or more for a fully-functional port, if it's ever FULLY-functional. Search the Rom section in the original Leo section for the official linux project thread.
Get the phone if you like WinMo 6.5. If not, wait for another phone. Trust me, there will be just as nice Android phones for tmobile in the next few months, and WinPhone 7 phones by the end of the year.

As an Ex-iphone user, i loved too playing around with photo applics that add effects to pictures, i.e. vintage look, polaroid etc... Can you recommend on any applications for HD2 of the same nature?
I have found VintagePic in the marketplace, but i can't purchase it since my credit card does not match any of the countries in the list. Any other suggestions?

I must admit, as a new user of HD2, I'm very concerned about messing around and ending up bricking my phone. i finally got to the stage where i have everything working fine on my WM, so I'm less eager to go about and mess things up.
However, maybe i can start reading and learning from other people's experience on the different 'adventures' that i may run into if i try to install Android on my system. as far i i understand there is still no 100% working version, but it's getting close.
Can you reference me to the main discussion thread on the forum for the android on HD2? (how to install..etc...)
BTW - do i need to take something into consideration if my Phone is a t-mobile?

I do believe there are effects within your camera options that allows a few effects, under advance, on the 3rd page, you will find effects, limited to GrayScale, Seipia (for ur old look) and Negative (for whatever only God knows!)
But I do hear you, because I too am looking for some fun Cam Apps for my beloved phone. It's always a little harder to find fun stuff for a serious phone.

As someone who is only just a few months into his 24 month contract (a contract that has no built in data connection), I know the fear of mucking up your hardware. However I've found the whole experience to be quite safe.
The first step would be to get HSPL onto your phone from this thread - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433
Then reading this thread - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713977 should give you everything else you need to know to find and install a new ROM, Radio and Android build.
I went from stock ROM on my HD2 to cooked ROM, new Radio and Android all in a day with those threads.
The only issues I've noticed so far as not being able to change the alarm times on the built in clock (just download a new one from Android market) and sometimes the screen stops responding to touch for 10 seconds or so.

Does anyone know where to get the latest rom from the original KIN run? The one that still includes the option for exchange email accounts?
I've tried google, and usually my googlefu is strong but it seems not with this. the latest build seems to be v1 build 2814.0
Also, from what I can see it would work, I'd just have to turn off the cloud stuff using the hidden menu afterwords... or am I wrong?

This is actually one of the main problems. If we could get our hands on an actual rom from one of the KINs we would be in pretty good shape, and would be more likely to make progress.

No, although I was only looking for an older rom build.
I'm probably going to call Verizon to try and get them (badger them) to give me an older ROM, since the phones are basically worthless to me without the Exchange email client... Unfortunately, when I looked up the Kin specs, all the sites I checked listed that feature.
Right now I'm hoping that I can either get an older rom on the phone (somehow) or that the newly announced HP Veer comes out on Verizon (also unlikely, since its Tech specs page only lists gsm and not cdma, etc).
I'll see what I can do about getting a ROM first though.
Well, I tried Verizon, and then Sharp.
After the hours on the phone, it appears that:
a.) Verizon could give me an older ROM, if I could somehow get ahold of the right person... since they reason they gave me for not doing it is "As the original equipment manufacturer, Sharp wouldn't let us do that."
b.) Sharp immediately says they have nothing to do with the phone after making it, and only Verizon can help me out.
So with that being a dead end, I can only see 2 options:
1.) Get the info from nvidia that lets us create roms for their tegra stuff (kin one is tegra as well, I believe) and then dump the current rom using their tools and modify it. I don't really think this will be possible, since I'm not an OEM, but I find it more likely than #2.
2.) Get ROM builds and tools from Microsoft. Given how... microsoft... Microsoft is, I really doubt this will be possible.
So, next week I will try #1 (calling them, if possible), followed by #2... but it really looks like its up to the people here to figure out how to dump the phone's current ROM. Given that it has a usb port (and people have gotten some access to the system), I believe its possible one way or another.
Seeing that our current attempts to do something good with the phone had no success yet, i must ask.
Are any news on this topic? I guess we can even just take the "tools" part or drivers, we can skip the rom things .
Maybe Conflipper can help us? It appears he was in the news digging through the original Kin, finding a possible foundation for an instant messenger.

Sorry, been busy and only news I have on this front is depressing, so I didn't get around to updating quickly.
Can't get anything out of anyone, basically. nvidia wasn't helpful, microsoft wasn't helpful, verizon wasn't helpful, sharp wasn't helpful.
With Verizon, Microsoft, Sharp, it was more like a giant circle... each company would tell me that they couldn't help me, but the next company could, etc.
Calling nvidia just told me to fill out the developer application, but that didn't go anywhere.
It makes me sad because these phones would be awesome if we could actually customize and update them... although I guess there will eventually be replacements running android or something.
HP Veer (webOs) is nice, but it looks like it will be an ATT device, so...
What is the latest version of Android that I can run on my Samsung Continuum assuming I am successful in rooting it?
Also I have seen _many_ tutorials about rooting the Continuum. The problem is most of them are 2 years old. Is there a place to go to find the most recent, simplest, safest, way to root it?

Use super one click. It will do the trick. The best way to understand all the different mods and ROMs is to read the threads and then re-read until you feel like you understand the process. I did that and was ok. I also played around with some of the different flashing techniques because those are super valuable. One recommendation that was made to me was to root and get used to the flashing and mods in EC09. I recommend taking that advice, EC09 is more forgiving, EG04 is touchier and will softbrick or bootloop more often if mods are not flashed properly. Read-Learn-Try-Repeat. When you feel ready GB (EG04) is the lastest. Go to the New Rom Ginger thread and do the config found in the thread and then follow the instructions in the OP. I used Hjsplit to combine the files and Odin to flash. If you need help typically someone is around every day or two. Oh yeah and BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. If you don't back up a lot of times you will have to reflash a usable ROM through Odin and then rebuild.
Do you think it's worth rooting if the latest OS I can get is GB? I mean that's something like 2 years old and IIRC had a lot of problems. From what my colleagues have told me, the first completely reliable version is JB. They all have newer devices, upgraded, and said all of their problems went away with JB.
If I do root and upgrade to GB, will I lose anything? For example purchased apps? Will the play store still think I have an unrooted SCH-I400 with Froyo and still tell me that an app is incompatible even though it really is?
It's up to you and whether you think it's worth the root and the trouble. Flashing comes with risks and you have to assume that risk for yourself and your phone.
Everyone here has been helpful when issues arise but it's up to the individual what they ultimately decide to do or not do to their phone.
As to what happens to apps, I'm not sure I only run free apps and did not mind re-downloading a few of them. I did not have to reactivate my phone nor did I remember losing anything I thought critical, of course that is where backing up the phone comes into play. I use Titanium backup, sms backup, the standard google contacts sync and cwm, each for different reasons.
As to whether it will recognize GB I don't know I have not noticed anything one way or the other. Really I didn't notice much other than being able to use the GB mods on this forum. But I am still learning basic theming and mod development.

ram maybe the real hurdle so ics/jb maynot be in the continuums future at all, like u said u may need a better device for what u do, i have been patching sources from froyo sources (i400 drivers) to gb i500 sources at a shot at aosp, cm7.2 maybe still ahead.
Imo, don't go with anything motorola if you want to be rooting and ROMing. They always tend to have locked bootloaders. Don't let the continuum sour your impression of samsung. This is a rather old phone. Just make sure to get a device that is well supported here at XDA and make sure it's a rather high end handset and you should be all good.
Its not just the continuum. I had a Windows smartphone a few years ago from Samsung and it was junk. It wouldn't even remember my BT pairings for more than 2 weeks before I'd have to start pairing things again.
If I get a phone where they regularly upgrade it to a recent OS I wouldn't even be considering rooting, so a locked bootloader isn't a big concern.
I also don't want to spend a lot of money on the phone so a high-end handset (i.e GS3) is out of the question. I cant help it but I'm a cheapskate. The original razr is being offered free by Verizon.

If I get a phone where they regularly upgrade it to a recent OS I wouldn't even be considering rooting, so a locked bootloader isn't a big concern.

The Omnia was great minus the touch screen. I'm not sure if that is what you had but it was what I came from. Compared to other smart phones for the money the Omnia wasn't too bad. Same with the Continuum, I got it for free 2 years ago. Was worth it then and this forum really helps keep it interesting.
My two cents:
GB is worth it, is really not much work and does offer some good improvements. There are a few bugs, but nothing that is a deal breaker. And the great thing is, if you do root and go to GB and don't like it is just as easy to go back to stock. It is a two year old phone, and if you think you may upgrade anyway you might as well try it... You may like it and save some money/hassle of upgrading.
And you will still have all the apps that you downloaded/purchased from the market, and the apps that require GB will be a available.

this is how I felt. I am due for an upgrade, so I upgraded to GB. It makes the phone so much faster. I just rooted it and am in the process of deleting verizon bloatware to free up more ram.
