Simultaneous key strokes on Android? - Lenovo Yoga Book Questions & Answers

Hey there,
Is it possible to enable multi-button presses in the keyboard (or what you might call it) on the Android version of the tablet? I assume it will have to be rooted. The Halo Keyboard can clearly handle it.

Only with a custom driver, i guess. On multi-button press KEY_UP event comes immediately after KEY_DOWN, so it is not possible even with a custom IME.
Maybe it can be done by modifying ImputMethodManager but it will be rather hard to do (it is provided by lenovo, so no sources).

Wizard Keyboard Lighting

is there a way to have the Keyboard Light come on when the device is opened?
I find it aggrevating that I must press a key first!
I second that
I third it.
I fourth it....
yeah thats pretty god damn true actualyl when your in cinema and trying to txt when u open it you have to press two buttons, (a letter to lite it up) then another to delete that letter before u can start to reply, gay !
who is the one!
does anyone have ideas heres a thought
it should be triggered with the screen rotation
Haha, this is one of the most annoying things about the wizard.
I hate that "feature" and I also hate that the backlight goes out after a second or two on the keyboard if you don't push a key.
Lol, I second that one too!
I'm sure it would be possible to make an application that simulated keypresses on the slide out keyboard, but only whilst it was open (could be detected by looking is the screen was in landscape mode or portrait mode)
Should be simple enough to make, but i've not learnt enough at university yet to tackle such a problem, maybe next summer
it should not be triggered by app simulating keypress with screen rotation or upon opening it should be executed in same manner as screen rotation.
brins0: have you tried simulating a keypress by using the onscreen keyboard? Doesn't work.
The keyboard backlight is not stimulated by non hardware keypresses (at least on the Hermes)

Actually, looking into it further, there arn't actually any keys you could "press" that wouldn't result in an action on-screen. You may be able to trick the hardware into thinking you pressed a key (by possibly creating a virtual hardware key (if that is even possible)), which would make the keys light up.
Are the keyboard lights controlled by the hardware itself, or does Windows have some mention in the lighting status?
The keyboard backlight timer is all hardware controlled.
This means there is no way to change it's crappy 5 second time out, and no way to control it from within software.
Yes, it sucks. That is one of my few complaints about this device. The backlight on the keyboard DEFINATELY needs to be configurable.

I understand what you mean, but I think you mis-understand what i'm suggesting. The drivers for the keyboard should have something similar to a key status. If you make the status for a peticular key "pressed" or whatever, it's effectively fooling the driver into thinking the key has been pressed, hence the keys would illuminate. (I don't fully understand how the hardware works, not being an expert in this feild, and considering each new model differs (sometimes quite heavilly))

Yeah, I gathered this was the case...
I wonder if a physical modification of the hardware would allow it to be changed... Any volunteers
Elsewise, it is impossible...

Any electrical diagrams of the keyboards interface? lol
Why not just have it trigger upon landscape activation?
I too would like to see the keyboard light come on when landscape is activated, and stay on until landscape is de-activated

This is what we are suggesting, but this is not possible as the keyboard lights are controlled by the hardware, not by windows, so we can't really trigger them in such a way.
Unless you are willing to physically modify your hardware, it is NOT possible to make the keyboard lights activate upon sliding the keyboard open, and most likely never will be with this device, and most likely others too...
Hmm.
I know it's a stretch, but hit the delete key?
Or hit a menu key twice.

How to change default onscreen keyboard?

I'm install alternate onscreen keyboard, but can't shut down defautl keyboard. It suppress alternate by priority in input methods list.
Only solution i can think of is to root your phone and get Startup Manager and turn it off in there, I did.
Just press and hold the textbox or writing area, there you change "input method" to swype or samsung keyboard.
If I understand it right, OP wants the chosen input method to stick, so that it do not go back to a different one during soft reset. I'm interested in the solution too. I do not want to remove the default stock keyboard though, as I still want it in some situation.
If I go to Settings, Locale and Text and tick the newly installed keyboard (in my case the Droid X keyboard), then press and hold in an input area and select Input Options and use the new keyboard it stays the default keyboard, even after a soft reset.
If I then change back to the default keyboard by pressing and holding in an input area and selecting the Samsung Keypad, THAT will then stay as the default keypad, even after a soft reset.
The same works for the HTC_IME.
So I fail to see what the problem is.
The main annoyance I have is that neither the Droid X nor HTC_IME have a navigational arrows keyboard like the stock keyboard does. WHY WHY WHY did Samsung not make that menu button an OPTICAL TRACKPAD? They managed it on the Omnia and other smartphones. Without this feature, despite my love of this phone, I am falling out of love with this handset.

Hey, you're right! It does stick. My bad.
Wow, Droid X and HTC_IME must be so good, that you must find it so difficult to give up. I must try them.
I wouldn't bother with HTC iME if I were you: Droid X keyboard is head and shoulders above anything else out there as it uses multitouch to bolster its already rather solid prediction algorithms. for me it is as good as the iphone keyboard. I have REALLY tried to like Swype but still find it clunky in instances when I need to input numbers and letters or very specific words, and I cant swype a long word as quickly as i can tap out the first few letters of a long word and allow word prediction to finish it for me.
As for the default keyboard....well it has some nice features but I find myself getting terribly irritated by it when I really need it to work.
Hi Eaglesteve by the way. remember our many conversations in the HTC Advantage forums? I hope you've found a better device since then! it's amazing how things have moved on since then.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Leoni. Yes, iPhone keyboard is hard to beat. I'll give Droid X keyboard a go then.
Yes, those days on the HTC advantage forum is memorable for me, and I enjoyed the friendship and conversations with folks there. Yes, technology has really changed within a very short time, and I love it. Glad to be living in this generation. You're far more frequent phone changer than I have been, I noticed, almost never missing out on any device. I think as a result you're one of the most open minded and unbiased persons when making comparisons between them, and I enjoy reading your comments all the time.
Hey Leoni, after installing Droid X keyboard, it is not showing up when I go to setting, locale. When I click on the pass-dx2200 icon, I was given the choice of installing PandaHome2, which I did, although I hate the home screen now.
Is there a special procedure to follow before Droid X keyboard would appear on the setting for it to be ticked?

[Q] Necomer to i9000 / Android needs help -- Galaxy text scrolling, device freeze

Hello all,
While I've been using PPC for more than 10 years, the Galaxy S is my first Android based phone. So, please bear with me if my questions/below is a mix-up btw. OS issues and device issues.
1) Text scrolling.
The biggest gripe I have with the Galaxy S is that, during the longer text inputs -- say typing an email -- the occasional typos (mispressed letter sequence, for example) are a PITA to correct. So far I could tell there is no possiblity to scroll the text a few letter position. The "tab" button doesn't seem to be working as a e.g. trackball / optical mouse or any sort of positioning function (just a stupid button). Worse, the build-in keyboards has no "arrows" keys for scrolling the text.
Same holds true when I need to scroll a longer list of items.
The only way I do it is to point the cursor to the right position and/or erase all the intermediate text just to run into the same issue 10 letters later. Needless to say that takes too much energy (and bile) and disqualifies the device for text input just by itself.
So, the question is: How do I do scrolling / navigate text ? Is it possible to e.g. re-map the volume rocker on the side for having up/down (leflt/right) functionality ? Is this an "issue" with Android OS itself (of not having that possiblity) or a horrible design miss from Samsung (there seem to be other Android device -- some HTCs come to mind -- that do have some trackball / optical mouse functionality, for this very purpose, I would suspect).
2) Device freeze
I read in some reviews that this might be a Samsung ROM issue (haven't start mucking about with cooked / custom ROMS yet -- using the ROM the device was shipped with) but every once in a while the device freezes long enough to p!"#!"# me off -- not even my "old" WM 6.5 device did that, at the fraction of the CPU power in the Galaxy....
Any suggestion what to do ?
TIA for all the suggestions / hints,
Florian
Anyone ?
TIA yet again.
on the swype keyboard, swipe from the swype key to the SYM key.
Thanks, but that's still a PITA: takes 1 swipe only to get to the cursor keys, only to need to do another tap to get back to text input.
Anyway, I came to the conclusion there is not much to do -- the real cupltrit is the device HW design, which I find nothing short of idiotic.
Thanks anyway.

[Q] Keyboard dock: Disable tap to click? (Solved)

I hate trackpads that enable tap to click by default. It's near impossible to keep from hitting it while typing, and I often click on things by accident even when intentionally trying to just move the mouse. To me it's an absolutely useless feature, especially with dedicated left and right click buttons already there below the trackpad. I realize I can disable the touchpad altogether via the hotkey, but that's unnecessary unless I have an external mouse plugged in.
Now normally on desktop operating systems, there is a configuration utility for enabling and disabling advanced mouse features. This is not the case with Honeycomb, and Asus didn't see fit to include their own third party app for handling it, either. What options then do I have, if any? Can tap to click be disabled?
Edit: There now exists at least one custom kernel that can permanently disable tap to click. Grab it here. There are no options yet for those that want to be able to enable/disable on the fly.
You can't disable tap-to-click, but at least you can disable the trackpad completely (top row of buttons between bluetooth and screen brightness).
Considering you can use the TF screen as a touchpad, this should solve your main problem; as it did mine.
glg
or pick up a Bluetooth mouse.
Yeah, I ordered a Bluetooth mouse yesterday. It would just be nice to have some more control over the existing hardware.
There's an API to disable it, but not updated for 3.1 yet. Afaik it's being integrated into the custom firmware too...the thread's around here somewhere, lol... Sorry, too new to this!
Just wanted to update on this issue. A dev by the name clemsyn posted a modded kernel that disables tap to click. This permanently disables tap to click until you flash to a different kernel, though you won't hear any complaints from me.
You'll will of course need root and a custom recovery, and I run it alongside the PRIME! v1.4 ROM. Grab the kernel here.

[Q] Reverse Portrait and Reverse Landscape Mode Support?

Hey, guys. Quick question.
Is there any way AT ALL that reverse portrait and reverse landscape could be achieved on the NST?
Let me know. Thanks,
ThirdNookie
Android 2.1 only supported two orientations.
Heck, B&N only really supported one!
I've looked at this. You'd need some system patches to get that working.
Right now, my system has so many patches on it already.
You could also arrange this on a per-application basis.
I've thought about throwing it on my reader app.
The question of buttons makes it a sticky question.
The original orientation key remapping remaps all the arrow keycodes.
We'd want to remap the scancodes, but only on the hard keys and not external keyboards.

Well, first thing would be getting the screen itself to rotate properly. Then we can worry about key remappings.
I'm here, but I'm not on my regular development system right now.
I'll take a peek at the rotation stuff when I am.
