Nexus 4 won't turn on, only red light - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As of a few days ago my nexus 4 turned off sometime during the day and now it won't turn back on. I thought it might be dead so I left it in to charge for a few hours but still nothing. Only thing that shows up is a solid red light (not blinking). No other charging animations. It doesn't boot into download mode or recovery mode either. Is there anything I can do to fix?

I had many times that. Try to connect device to the charger until led starts to blink. If it does not happen in 24 hours i suggest to get the battery out and try to charge it directly for about 5-10 minutes. Please be carefull if you do not know what to do. How to know battery - + sides do not do this. Try to charge it with 5 volts.
Battery degrades and can't start charging. It's voltage now must be about 3 volts which is too low. Mine was like that 3 times but now i try to not discharge it under 30% and it still works. No reboots just i get about 2 hour sot. That's it.

It looks like your battery is dead, at least in my case that was the problem.

[Q] HD2 bad battery?

I bought new HD2.
I have this phone for 4 days.
I think sth is wrong with my battery - 100%, I make a 4 min call, suddenly I have 96%. Another call - 10 min - 89%.
A tried many things, tricks mentioned here on the forum. Didnt help.
(HR, clean system without programs, took out micro sd cards - nothing changed).
Today I ve tried to charge it (from 2%) - I turned off the phone - wait 4 hours. Still amber light. But when I turn on the phone (still connected to a charger) light changed to green (and i saw 100% status battery on taksbar), then i turned off again, and green light changed again to a amber light.
Have you the same?
Or that means I have corrupted battery?
Ive been on many forums, and i see people saying - battery is for 1 or 2 days, and another group - battery for 8-10 hours.
Be grateful for your ansewers - I dont know what to do.
David
After 4 hours of charging the battery should be about full. But it why not charge it all night? If the phone is new you should charge it a longer for the first couple of times. And the battery could drain faster the first few times.
You didn't mention if you turned on Wifi, bluetooth, data connection, GPS, 100% screen brightness, heavy apps. All of them might drain your battery faster.
the longest i have personally experienced, and I am currently still opn this status, is that one single battery charge lasted me 4 days. While draining about 5-10% each day.
How tho? I simply dont know! to be honest, I somehow managed to screw up my today screen so I can have no htc sense on and sometimes nothing on.
anyway about the battery charging, I suggest you to read this.
dunno where I got it from and real or not, it might just help you
good luck

Thx for your answers.
But tell my about this indicator - green and amber lights.
I turns green only when I charge battery and phone is ON.
But when I charge battery while phone is off, then i can wait 3-4 ours it's still amber (but when I turn on phone suddenly it changes to green and it shows 100%).
The four hour charge - was that with the charger or USB computer charging?
I can do full charge in 1.5 hours from the charger and over 4 hours on the USB computer charging.
ok, it donest matter - usb or cable.
matters - phone ON or phone OFF.
When phone is on - turns green.
When off - it is all the time amber (red) - using USB or cable, doesnt matter. But when i turn on the phone it changes to green. when i turn off, it changes to amber again.

[Q] When turning off, a fully charged battery has 0%

Finally receieved my Nexus 4 after almost 2 months waiting, but not really enjoying it right now.
Received it yesterday, unpacked it and I couldn't turn on the phone. So I've connected the cable into the charger and a light showed up.. After 30 min I saw a battery icon and after 1 hour I could turn up the phone.
When turned on, it showed 3% battery, so I let it charge for about 5 hours. While charging I've noticed something strange.. it was charging very slow. After 4h of charging it was showing just 16% battery and 1h later it was suddenly at 70%. After it got till 99% I unplugged the charger and tried to use the phone.
Everything worked till I wanted to restart it. The phone doesn't want to start up! Pressing the powerbutton for 20-30 seconds.. nothing happens. Tried the volume button combination.. nothing. Plugged it into my PC and after 10 min the battery icon showed up?! The battery was at 0%! The battery went from 99% to 0% just by turning it off!
I've let the phone charge again, this time the whole night (7 hours).. It was fully charged at 100%. I disconnected the charger and turned off the phone.. and again: a black screen.
I've Googled and searched everywhere but couldn't find 1 thing.. what could be the problem of this? How can my phone go from 100% to 0% by turning it off?
I have no idea what is going on but you need to contact google asap, they'll send a replacement and hopefully the new one isn't a dud.
If you want to try playing with it, plug the phone into a different charger with a different cable, let it charge overnight/12hrs and give it another shot it could be a bad cable/charger (to be honest I think this is a long shot.)
Really sounds like a hardware problem.
Your only option is RMA.

My nexus 4 refuses to turn on while attached to the charger

I got my nexus 4 on Tuesday morning, plugged it in to the charger, waited until it reached 100%, then inserted my sim card, turned it on, upgraded through OTA from 4.2 to 4.2.2 and then set up my usual things. I discharged the battery from 100% to 16%, then I turned it off and plugged to the charger. I turned it on when it was at 95%, and unplugged from the charger because I had to get out of home. This morning it was roughly at 30%, then I turned it off and plugged it to the charger. Later I turned it on, it was at 93%, so I waited until 100% before unplugging. It stood ages at 99%, so I turned it off. A little bit later I tried to turn it on, and when I pushed the power button it showed that the battery was charged, then the image disappeared and the led began blinking in red until I released the power button. I unplugged it, then powered on, and it booted, everything as normal: but the battery was on 94%. I plugged it in and after one minute it was already at 99%. I turned it off, then pressed the power button, but same behaviour: image, then red led blinking. So I plugged the phone to my galaxy nexus charger, waited for a little, and then same behaviour again. So I unplugged it, turned it on, and when I was in the system I saw that the battery was on 100%.
Now the battery is normally discharging while using it, no strange values.
What should I do now? Should I let it discharge until it turns off, or should I never let it discharge until it turns off? And should I charge it with the stock charger or the galaxy nexus charger? I'll be grateful to everyone makes me know what he thinks.
Excuse me for my poor English and for how much I wrote, I would make things clear as possible.

I am sorry for my lazy, I only skim through your post, but I do read the question.
I read somewhere in this 4rum that the Nexus4's battery can be charged at anytime you want.
FOr me, I usually use the phone until 20-30%, then I turn my phone off and charge.
For my brother, he charge without any pattern, and he doesn't turn the phone off when charging.
For my own opinion, you shouldn't use the phone until the batter is empty.
Notice the same thing 3 times with my Nexus. Have searched for a answer to this but no one has a answer I guess or just ignore it. I just power up without it being plug in ..
R: My nexus 4 refuses to turn on while attached to the charger
Now it's at 13%, i'll plug it in the next 10 minutes, then i'll see what will happen this time. Very strange indeed.. I'm only a little bit scared about the "red led death" i read about here and there over the internet.

I never turn mine off. I charge it all night every night when I sleep. Stays on.
Send it back? Rma?
as above i charge my device every night, its never powered off,. is the device hot while charging not like usual warm temp, but very hot that the device detects an issue?
the battery stats are wiped each time its charged, i guess you have some internal failure, battery not being detected after you disconnect from mains or reported as flat, faulty, unreliable source
its best not to fully discharge the battery but maybe you should use it till it powers off then recharge, any charger is fine, but you dont need anything higher than 1amp
i would return it, would suck to have an issue away from home.

Well, i actaully tried to leave it plugged over night. But i think it stops charging right after the red light dissapears, which happens after 15mins or so after plugging. Btw, i mentioned earlier that battery shows 3.7V when measured with multimeter, so the battery doesn't seem to be the culprit... or does it...?

your battery is drained below safe line....to 0%. They warn you NOT to update it with less than 60% battery FOR A REASON!!
Friends case she managed to charge ger asus 7 memopad with non-removable bat to 60% after 8 HOURS, because of a bloatware wakelock drainage to 0% after a factory reset....
If that doesn't work you have to either recharge the battery manually (something like car batteries, you have to unsolder the battery connector because the battery doesnt have 2 gold squares that touch the gold pins like the removable ones, or get a new battery.
Li-Po batteries should never be discharged to 0%, and can make problems if they are not removable (Nexus 4)

I did manage to charge it manually with two small wires and an old Nokia charger, when checking battery with multimeter after a few minutes of charging seems to increase voltage. But i guess if the chip on battery is fried there is nothing more i can do.
I will try to leave the phone on charger all night once again, see if that makes a difference, and update if anything changes.
take off the back, disconnect the battery connector wire and connect it again, put it on charger and see if things change
UPDATE:
Leaving it to charge overnight didn't have any effect. Any other suggestions than changing a battery?
Nah, sorry, but i am out of ideas. You basically tried it all :/

I know there is a lot of threads about bricked N4's, and i can assure you that I have viewed each and every one of them, but i still can't resolve my broblem.
This whole brick situation happened after trying to update to Android 4.3 OTA update, the phone didn't complete the process and turned off, where red light of death happened.
So the scenario goes like this:
If i hold POWER button for ~30s when phone is off charger i only get a Google logo for 2 sec, and phone instantly restarts
Holding PWR+VOL-DOWN buttons when phone is off charger doesn't do anything
Plugging phone to charge (socket or PC) results in solid red light
Holding PWR+VOL-DOWN or PWR+VOL-DOWN+VOL-UP for ~15s makes the red light blink at a steady rate
While continuing to hold the respective buttons and pluging the charger off, and on again gets me to bootloader or download mode (depending on button combo) for ~2s and phone restarts.
I tried removing and inserting the battery 3 times. One time i got blinking red light when plugged the charger in. Second time i got solid red light and third time got solid red light again
I tried charging the battery directly for 15 minutes with old Nokia charger, and it resulted in something different(when i assembled the phone and tried to turn it on with PWR+VOL-DOWN buttons when charger was plugged off, i got to bootloader for 2seconds before phone restarted, i tried to boot second time and the same thing happened, but when i tried it third time i got nothing, just like before) so this was the first time i got into bootloader while not charging a phone.
*My PC seems to pick up the phone for a brief moment when it is in bootloader and starts installing the drivers. Drivers gets installed when i'm in download mode for that brief moment too.
**Phone doesn't get to the white or red battery icon while plugged to charge.
***Solid red light dissapears after charging for ~10mins, but phone won't do anything.
****When measured with a multimeter battery shows 3.7V
I hope someone will be able to help me with this, as it is frustrating as f*ck. I don't have a working warranty, so fixing the N4 isn't an option, and where i live phone repair prices are over the roof (ex. motherboard change for N4 costs ~270$ ).

I had the same problem. Kept it on the charger for a whole day and still only the Red Light.
Took it to a local shop and they said there is a short circuit in the antenna
Took it to the LG Service center and they said my motherboard is gone.
Both were costing a bomb to repair and still there was no guarantee.
IMHO, get a new phone.
Sorry
Have you tried charging it with a wireless charging pad? I got mine to boot after I did that. Your battery is drained and it doesn't have enough juice to charge itself.

Don't fall for the motherboard dead trick. Just a way to steal your money.... change the battery and never let it go to 1%

[Q] Battery at 0% - Won't Charge!

Sorry if this has been covered but after an hour searching lots of threads about battery/charging issues, I can't find anything...........
Plugged my phone (S6Edge+) in as normal last night, this morning after about 1hrs use the battery was at 10%?? Didn't notice when I unplugged it if it was at 100% when I unplugged it but I guess not?
So I've plugged it back in and gone back about an hour later and it's shut down? Battery is showing 0% and it goes through power up sequence ok but then shuts down due to lack of battery.
When plugged in, I have the red LED top left, I get the empty battery graphic with a lightning bolt in the middle, then the graphic changes to 0% and I get the 3 green circles in sequence at the bottom of the screen.............all as normal, except the battery is staying at 0%?? Is there anything I can do?
I've tried different charger/cable, tried volume down + power, about to try a hammer.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.
I had something similar happen to me recently . Heres what I did. Connect the charger to the phone, while connected reboot to recovery(TWRP), leave the phone alone about 20mins, after the 20 mins are up reboot back to recovery while still connected, now you should see atleast 1 percent battery while in recovery, reboot your phone as normal from recovery and now it will charge. This is what has worked for me.
