I struggled a little yesterday with visibility on max brightness in very bright conditions outdoors . I would say the Samsung screen has the slight advantage over the P20 Pro outdoors on the Note 8 as does the iPhone 7..

Can you compare it to a galaxy s8 / s9?
I just tried it vs my s8+ and the s8+ was a little darker than the p20 pro on max settings, but the s8+ has that boost in sunlight which helps a lot I guess.
S8 has better outdoor visibility in my opinion. Do you have a glass screen protector on, as that seems to destroy visibility in sunlight for me.
If you go into Developer menu there is an option called "Increase readability under sunlight" makes a noticeable difference.
With the increase readabilty on in direct sunlight it's better than an iphone 7 plus..and S7...at least for me
I didn't know about the "Increase readability under sunlight" on my phone until it was pointed out in this thread. Really interesting feature. Works pretty well.

For sure, my brightness never goes more than 3/4. Only if i have to read really important things, but usually it is at 30-35%
IPS LCD displays are very good outdoor performers
Do you guys take money or gift from Huawei? In all this real life threads there are the same guys talking about how great is this phone. That is not so great.
Didn't knew that today was crossposting day
Oh sorry I just see same people of other threads so I think that is only one.
Now you're one of those people in every thread, bravo!
The displays sunlight legibility is great. The phone does not heat up during extensive use under direct sunlight.
Looking good. No need to have max brightness to make it readable.
not so good. if you are under direct sunlight then sometime contents are not visible but that too depends on the theme you are using sometime. some gives you very bright screen even under sunlight but some doesnt. (personal observation, may vary for others).
definitely not the best when it comes to the direct sunlight condition.
Its good
Average, sometimes have problems reading text in sunlight but mostly its average
Never a problem in sunlight.
Outdoor visibility is great. Though at times maximum brightness is really needed.
everything is readable in direct sunlight.
All visible. Max brightness is good.
Outdoor visibility is really good. No problem seeing my screen on a bright day.

It's one of its weaknesses. I can't recall owning any phone that was lacking this bad in outdoor brightness. Maybe my LG G6, but that was because of the adaptive lighting was messed up, soon I took it off from auto brightness, the phone was bright. Not this one though.
Outdoor visibly is acceptable. If you want to out on a super sunny day and enjoy a movie or game on the go, this is not for you.
If you are trying to do a call, look at a map, or some e-mail, you can see the screen, hard, but you can.
I had worse devices (laptop, tablets, old phones) than this. What would make this screen better for outdoor viewing is something my old phone did, and that is play with the panel contrast setting. Horrible for images, video and such, but for text, it helped make it more readable. Would be nice if all phones did this (would also help battery life), but sadly, that is not the case

The outdoor visibility is not that good.
And even worse when u try to take a picture.
Also I noticed brightness booster is not that effective.
But in the end. The device is really good. Best in this price bracket.
screen is difficult to read outside, brightness is always set to max and its still too low even with indirect light. unreadable in direct sunlight.
It's okay for me in sunlight when set to auto(I never found any outdoor mode option so idk if enabled ) but with sunglasses it's too dark, usable to do something or maps but no for media consumption. I compared with xiaomi mi9 in shop and Asus is brighter(indoors) for me with better colors, but in sunlight screen have more reflections so it may appear darker I think.
brightness of Asus screen

Is this something that can be increased with a software update as being able to see the screen in sunlight is important? Thank you.
The outdoor visibility is the best from all of my previous devices so I am happy.
dead thread but anybody able to compare with mate 9?
Sorry. Can't.

Received phone last week, was concerned about screen brightness outdoors after reading internet reviews...not sure if they tweaked it before launch but there is no issues in direct sunlight..

so, you can see the apps, you can write easily in direct sunlight?
thanks
I am usually very fussy when it comes to sunlight legibility and I have had many phones, but this seems more than fine for normal usage outdoors. It's no iPhone but certainly not as bad as some reviewers make it out.
Auntomatic bright on

It's actually not very bright in direct sunlight. Was out on the back porch with it today, noticed it right away.
Not bright enough by far for me. Compared to other flagship phones I've used, S20, p40 pro, oppo find X pro all better
Not bright enough for me in direct sunlight. Auto brightness is weaker than last year's 1. Hope this can be sorted in software later.
It could use a bit more brightness indeed. Sometimes while taking photos when it's very sunny, it can be a bit hard to see the screen.
Not bright at all coming from the S20+ and P30 Pro. Great screen resolution but utterly abject brightness for some reason.

I've noticed a wierd shift in colors at max brightness when I'm outdoors. Almost like maxing out the shadows.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Can I turn this off?
adding anti glare screen protector will improve outdoor visibility but lowering screen clarity, the display looks less sharp. though watching 480 content will be more pleasing with that. looks like antialiasing effect
i put in fron 3MK Glass prtotector visibility on the sun i have little better than on my old Moto G7, on G7 i use about 75-80% screen brightness az daily to see anything, on R7 i use about 40% is eanough bright - i dont know exactly % cuz system dont show in % but screen it sell hase minimal discoloration when u watch on angle
