I am trying to figure out how to root and install custom recovery on the X20/4GB model, running 20171018 (7.1.1) update. My phone has the notorious issue where a full reset erases my IMEI and MAC address - and I am not happy going through the whole process so a rooted device will help me.
Is it safe to use any rooting method for the X20/ 4GB variant? If not can you recommend the most optimal one?
Secondly, my phone's volume buttons have stopped working: is it possible to root without requiring the use of volume button combinations while powering on the device?
Your help is much appreciated!
yes just use spflash tools ok

Hello everyone, Im new here so please dont kill me if this is a common question. I have searched all over but cant find the answer I need. Im excited to learn from all the wonderful information here and cant wait to get started.
Anyway, I had a Nexus S 4g flashed to work on Boost. I would like to root it so that I can change some things. However, I do not know if my phone was previously rooted. Is there anyway to find out? If it was, and I rooted it again, would that cause problems? Also, does rooting the phone cause problems with the flashing, or will it keep all of the necessary network information intact (so that it doesnt screw up my service)?
Rooting doesn't cause problems with the flashing, it just -potentially- opens up the system to damage. This is a user responsibility and not a fault of the rooting process; it's a possibility of having too much power over the system.
Most likely it would have had the bootloader unlocked and have been rooted. Turn off the phone and turn it on again by holding Vol. Up and Power simultaneously for a few seconds. If it was rooted, the best way to know is if it says "bootloader unlocked" in the upper half of the screen. If not, there is a high chance it isn't CURRENTLY rooted. If it is unlocked, the most work you need to give root access to android is going into recovery and installing a .zip file.
Exactly so after finding that out just look over one of the many guides we have here at XDA to flash the superuser package.

I didnt see anything saying unlocked. I see 'Lock State - Locked', so Im assuming this means that it is not currently rooted. I guess now I will go through some guides and learn which method would be best for me. Thanks for the quick reply and help.
Most likely you aren't rooted either - you can test by typing "su" in terminal emulator.
Just remember if u unlock bootloader the internal data and sdcard will all be deleted.
Hi all,
I've been out of the android world for a while and i got back to this attractive world with an HTC M9+ supreme camera. and a chinese tablet with MediaTeck chip in them.
i tested to unlock bootloader on the tablet using the fastboot command oem unlock but i ruined it and it is now totally dead not even turning on.
my question, is it safe to root my phone? what is the difference in rooting and unlocking bootloader between MediaTeck and Qualcomm chips as i used to develop for qualcomm and it was fairly easy to unlock and root such devices?
what do you advice me to do to remove all Chinese apps and bloatware from this phone if rooting is not going to work and if i root-only my phone without unlocking bootloader just to remove the bloatware apps can i still receive htc OTA for marshmallow and install it?
sorry for my long questions but i really need those info to get back to android ROMing and being more active toward our community.
Thank you all
Yes it is safe to root. I rooted my HTC One M9 Plus Supreme Camera yesterday with no problems.
You have to "Unlock" the bootloader first. It will restore your phone back to factory so make sure you have all of your pics and files backed up.
Rooting is gaining root level permissions to make changes to system files. There are several videos on youtube that show how to do it. I watched the one by sakitech for the M9. Good step by step directions. You will need TWRP 2.8.7.0 for the M9+ and the latest SuperSU.
As far as the Chinese apps, I just deleted them. Go the the app drawer, tap and hold on the app, and drag it up to where it says "uninstall". You don't have to be rooted for that.
thank you

hi @flymacs thank you for answering my question.
i had great knowledge in rooting android devices but i need to know if it is safe with Mediateck device. also can you find stock recovery and rom for this device? please send me the link you used to root the device.
thank you
Minachvim
I followed the thread in the General section for the M9+ here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/one-m9-general/howto-rooting-m9-m9pw-htchiaumltuhl-t3116327
This thread hes the TWRP links: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/one-m9-general/recovery-twrp-2-8-6-0-english-m9pw-t3116099
I also needed to review my fastboot knowledge so I watched this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOHN8byHAzk
I could not find stock recovery. I like android 5 better than 6 so I decided that it didn't matter to me. I don't plan to unroot my phone.
I flashed TWRP and used it to make a stock unrooted backup. Then I used TWRP to flash SuperSU. Booted up the phone to the Home screen. Rebooted to TWRP and flashed the sd card write fix from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...ipop-external-sd-card-write-fix-fob6-t3051562
TWRP has issues flashing from the external sd card, so put SuperSU and any other files you are going to flash on the internal storage.
So to answer your question, yes it's safe to root, but for this device, it might not be possible to unroot until someone can find a stock recovery.
Need some help rooting my phone. It's a Samsung Galaxy S5 on VZW. I feel it's old enough now to root it and probably not have any problems.
I'm running Android 6.0.1. Model # SMG900V. I have the build # too. Is it safe to post that publicly?
I'm just trying to get rid of some of the stock apps and and move the rest to my SD card to clear up some space. So, I don't need any super packaged stuff that has all the bells and whistles.
It sounds good, but I don't know a thing about rooting. I've never rooted a phone, and I don't want to brick it. I was also looking at prebuilt roots like oneclickroot and kingroot but they sound a little iffy. Oneclickroot wouldn't work with my phone. I put it in developer mode and installed the ADP drivers that I think are for my phone locally.
I don't really want to install the full cyanogenmod, I'm happy with the standard Android OS, I just want some more power to do things my phone won't allow me, like deleting the stock apps that are taking up so much space.
I decided to try KingRoot as per the instructions on this video QicDqTKb_sU (I can't post links yet)
I downloaded the APK, ran it through Virustotal (which came back with a lot of positives, but I just assumed it was because it was a root installer, the AV software was warning against that). if you want to look it up yourself, the SHA256 hash is b780c2114c3b285d05024161345c72337f22b18c31ed178084b8a8b41a586483.
So, I installed KingRoot, and it came back and said it didn't work. I ran the Root check app and it said I didn't have root access.
But now, when I boot with the "safe mode" where you clear cache and things like that, it has a warning that says:
Warning!!
A custom OS can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications.
If you want to download a custom OS, press the volume up key.
Otherwise, press the volume down key to cancel.
Volume up: Continue
Volume Down: Cancel (restart phone)

It won't let me do anything else at that screen, so out of curiosity I hit volume up. Then, I got stuck at a screen that said "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!" and got stuck there and wouldn't do anything else.
The only way out is to pop the battery out and restart, or do the volume down, home and power button.
So, I'm kind of stuck. KingRoot won't work for me, and I found an article titled: "Update Verizon Galaxy S5 SM-G900V to Marshmallow 6.0.1 (PF4) and Keep Root" but I'm too much of a newb to follow the instructions and I'm not sure it would work for my particular situation since I'm already in 6.0.1.
Other than that, the phone works perfectly fine. I can't boot into recovery mode to clean cache, but besides that I'm okay.
As far as I've gotten, I got myself into developer mode, allowed USB to be installed from unknown sources, enabled USB debugging and installed what I think are the right APB drivers for the phone (which I was going to use for Oneclickroot, but that apparently won't work with my device either).
Basically, my question is how do I root this phone without bricking it? I can't boot into recovery mode anymore without the error message and I don't know what software I need to get root (and the bootloader I guess? I'm not sure what that is, tbh)
Any help would be appreciated & sorry for the long post!

You didn't boot into safe mode, you booted into download mode, i suggest if you wanna root the s5 to do some research on Odin and download mode and how to flash stock, there's no one click root app that will root this device.
To root the VZW s5 you'll need to downgrade to PB1 (Lollipop) and then root it with flashing the NK2 kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370/page1 you will find here everything you need.
Hello guys! Like the title says, I forgot my volume down rocker no longer functioned and like a dummy I flashed the official firmware to start fresh. Now I obviously can't root since most root exploits are now done with odin. My s5 is g990t and still on kitkat firmware. I have 2 s5s 1 on mm and the kitkat 1. I am not impressed with mm so I prefer my kitkat with some lolipop. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. I need to somehow get in download without the down button or root without download so SU can help me get there. Thanks guys!!

Use adb reboot bootloader
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
U can use a jig clip (300 k resistor) very useful and no need for buttons
Just enable adb debugging in developer and use adb to boot into download mode using a pc command " adb reboot bootloader"

Thanks guys. I ended up using Samsung 300k tool. All you do is install on your pc plug the phone in and baam!
I am about a week or so away from receiving my V20, was curious if there is anything a Sprint user would miss after unlocking the bootloader and using a custom ROM.
Do you miss the AM/FM radio?
Is the development community slower than usual when a firmware update hits and the custom ROMs don't update their side as quick?
Besides disabling the AM/FM radio are data speeds or any other radios (blueooth/wifi/LTE bands) performing better/worse/differently?
And lastly, since it is impossible to go back to a stock phone after rooting, do you regret rooting and wish you could go back to stock?
If those out there could answer any or all of those questions I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you!

FM radio works. AM never existed. I am fairly quick on patching the stock roms but for custom(or stock custom) roms thats on other devs. I have noticed no issues with my connections compared to before rooting. I was the 3rd LS997 rooted if I remember right(This was before root was released). I can go back to stock at anytime if I want. Its not possible via a KDZ but I have already figured it out manually. Im not going to make the method public though because it is VERY involved and if someone messes up doing it, it WILL brick your phone. Then I would be blamed. So I have no plans to release it unless i get an easier way to do it. Just know that the hard part of figuring out if its possible is done...
Do keep in mind if you receive the ls997 on zv6 or zv7 you cannot root.
If you haven't noticed who I am look at the poster of the LS997 root method

The good news, I received the phone on ZV5(!). The bad news? I followed your excellent tutorial until the very end when my over confidence didn't do a full wipe and now I have the secure start-up issue.
The unfortunate reality was me reading AFTER THE FACT your very clear warning:
**************
*****ALL USERS*****
If you encounter a "Secure Boot" Password then booting the first time you did not Format data properly.
To reiterate: To properly decrypt the device you need to boot into TWRP and go to WIPE->FORMAT DATA and you will be prompted to type "yes" to format and decrypt.

So now I'm stuck, I've tried booting back into TWRP via hardware buttons and without having the password I can't even go back in to re enable USB debugging.
Am I completely out of options here?

No you arnt. You need to reinstall twrp through fastboot and then pull battery to turn off phone. Insert battery the use Hw Keys method by holding vol- and power til you the Lg the only let go of power then holding both again until you see factory reset. Do yes twice.

One last thing before I attempt this because I don't want to create another problem for myself, I'm lost as to how i'm supposed to reinstall TWRP from fastboot on my PC if I can't get the phone into fastboot mode. Is there a hardware method I need to do to get the phone into fastboot mode?

Once youve started the dirtysanta method it installs a new bootloader. you can access bootloader(fastboot) by holding VOL- and plugging iin the phone when powered off
