So, got the OTA about 3 days ago - 9.5.3 which will become widely available soon.
It's far better than the last one which broke everything without a Factory Reset.
This update is very smooth, they've done some things with the notifications and the fingerprint reads faster, BUT:
It breaks the Themes App - specifically Wallpaper Carousel
I installed The OTA dirty so the Themes app remained present but the Wallpaper Carousel was removed.
Also, the Theme App itself was replaced with an App of the name of the current Theme I had.
When I opened that App it would take me to Themes and I could customize from there.
I put this post up to warn that THEMES may not work after your update.
From what I've learned, there are legal issues with the European Community.
I thought I should make this post because if you are like me, customising MIUI is like brushing my teeth - I have to do it!
I suggest that if you want to remain on MIUI with Themes, that you DOWNLOAD the official global 9.2.3 which is still on the MIUI store and SAVE IT TO YOUR PC so that you can downgrade easily after the full roll-out of 9.5.3 is you want to.
N.B. from official Global Rom, you cannot roll back to 9.2.2 which I think has been the best Rom so far because it's Nougat.
Also, 9.2.3 was a very fussy update to begin with and it's best done with a FACTORY RESET - so remember to make a PC backup of your files (esp photos, music and docs) because it's easier to put them back in using PC/USB than using the cloud.
Messages, settings etc are handled well by MIUI cloud but you should use PC to back up your hard files.
I hope Xiaomi will split the EU Rom from the Global Rom
going forward.
If you miss the 9.2.3 Global Room on the official site after the roll out, the site below has both Recovery and Flash versions.
N.N.B - the recovery version is easiest; just use the updater in settings and select the download. Zip
Thanks to @zebreu for noting this.
https://xiaomifirmware.com/download-link/?dlm-dp-dl=8209
P.S. YOU CAN get themes App back in Global 9.5.3 (thanks @marlus% )by changing your region (in settings > additional settings > region) but I'm pretty sure you will no longer find Wallpaper Carousel (settings > locksreen & passwords)
P.P.S. rolling back to 9.2.3 may break your Gallery APK, you can download that from here:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/xiaom...2-1-7-1-global-android-apk-download/download/
Thanks for sharing methods to roll back from 9.5.3.0 to 9.2.3.0, i have managed to roll back with recovery method, still when i access the link from description (for downloading firmware) appears to download version 9.2.2. mot 9.2.3.
The post is incorrect, 9.5 doesn´t break "themes" it´s a restriction due to some new laws in Europe. Xiaomi put an statement on their forums and they are working on a fix.
Even they put the unofficial fix for the themes...
I just don´t get why people at first change goes and scream that something is broken or the updated messed up their life.. Worst when they do explain the changes and why they happen.

- it's does break Themes, specifically WALLPAPER CAROUSEL -
Check to see if you can find the Carousel in Settings.
The legal restriction is mentioned in the post.
This post is made so that people know before they take the update.
When that update is released, access to 9.2.3 will be withdrawn from the official site.
If they fix it, good - but it's good also that people know what to expect.

I have Carousel, because i´m not in the region affected by the restriction......
The title of post make it sound like Xiaomi messed up the update, when is not the case. They had to remove them to comply with EU regulations plain and simple. Is not broken is a feature they had to remove and they are working to fix it.

@wildger I also am in a non-EU region.
Please check.
There is no Wallpaper Carousel in the Settings nor, as far as I can see, within the App.
The post is made for the benefit of people using the phone so if they do want a working CAROUSEL they'll know what to do BEFORE they are unable to get a hold of an official ROM that still has it.
This is how updates are tested.
If there is please let us know where to find it.

No, this is not how updates are tested. What are you doing is just installing the update and if something is slightly out of place, say it´s broken, when it´s not the case. The issue is that people don´t take time to read, xiaomi informed about the "themes" and "carousel" issue a few weeks ago, even they were absent from the last two dev releases.
This was expected, is not something that was done by mistake or something that´s broken because a dev messed up. This was done to comply with EU regulations
People will read the title of post and will think the update is broken or dangerous....
Sorry don´t want to sound mean, but people don´t read and just complains about things that were informed beforehand.
For example
"NEW AOSP ROM!! bla bla bla Not working: VOLTE" and then you see a post that says
"Is Volte working???"

My friend, you don't sound mean - you sound childish and defensive and completely out of order.
On top of that you are giving out false information.
I don't think you even bothered to read the post and if you did you have no understanding at all of the first few lines.
If you had read the post you would see that it CLEARLY addresses everything you raise and has been made to provide helpful feedback.
Your tone is NOT helpful - it is patronising.
The point at XDA is to share feedback on what one finds for the benefit of others.
If you have a contribution, go ahead.
Here you personalize the matter for no reason at all, and turn the post into a squabble that is not helpful to anyone else.
Remember that someone took the time to make the post. If you want to give Xiaomi a party, wire directly to them.
There is a reason I posted this topic - it's not a waste of time.
I will not reply to you again:
Let others look and see for themselves.
False information?? I just gave two screenshot of the wallpaper carousel.... yet i'm the one giving false information..

Either it is false or we are talking about two different ROMs or there is something wrong with my phone.
Either way, respect the experiences of others - they are free to test and then contribute their experiences.
We will find out together - this is what we do.
We are talking about the same rom, that's why in both screenshots i put the rom info.
Themes Apps is Not broken like you said in the title is region locked
http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1906854&extra=&page=1&mobile=2
Easy way to see is there, go to settings and in the search settings put "car" and you will it is listed..
This is not my experience - let's see what others say.
Nevertheless, that notice is precisely why this post is here.
In fact that notice alone deserves it's own thread.
Carousel is available in region India, in some region it wasn't available.
and no, it's not broken.

THANK YOU!.
Now he may understand that i'm not giving false information with screenshots from the rom....
Let's see where this goes.
It's not a political campaign.
They've pulled the update, let's see where it goes. As far as my update it stands unchanged.
I don't have: settings > locksreen > wallpaper carousel on 9.5.3
I also don't see categories to select.
All I have is: settings > themes
Onward .

Then you have an issue with your setup. Because so far there is nothing in the miui forums and they are the first to complaing is some feature is missing.
What I'm telling you is that it is not there.
Let the update roll out and we'll see what is happening when we have enough feedback.
That exact hint is WHY this post was made.
Settings > lockscreen/passwords > wallpaper carousel does not exist in 9.5.3.
I still don't get why people use miui

Why not?
1)The battery is much better than in any AOSP Rom, yes even better than in AtomicOS. Some old version of MiuI had issues with the battery, but this stable and the current dev version have good battery.
2)Ram managment is better than most AOSP Rom, the only one that does a better job is the Vainilla AOSP by Phh
Most of the time it uses less than 2gb of ram
3)The ugly part (personal taste), the launcher can be changed by any launcher you like This is how mine looks
4)Even without root, you can fully debloat it using ADB
5)Clock to the left is the future xD look at the Android P DP1
6)The real downside, no camera2api, no big deal, root and enable c2api and install the gcam you like.
What can i say, i´m a happy camper with MiuI. It does all i need.
Now tell me, why we shouldn´t use it?

Hi all, Each time there is news about leak firmware, I believe many of us here go mad and try to flash to the latest firmware, even though we know that those leak beta firmware may not be stable are and might bricked our phone permanently.
Among those firmwares we flashed, Froyo leak firmwares those we everyone is looking forward, one of the reason is of course promise from Samsung since day one that our SGS will get Froyo release.
But I would like to know what do you expect from Froyo release?
New function? Lag fix? JIT? New TouchWiz? Better Exchange support? GPS fix?
Personally, I'm looking forward "better" Exchange support, especially
1.GAL support,
2.task sync,
3.full table view support,
4.meeting invitation request/response
5. Away setup
Most of the features listed up there is supported by my older Nokia E71.it's sad to see Samsung rollout Froyo without those.
PS: item 1, 4, 5 is supported by HTC sense on their Desire of I'm not mistaken.
How about you all? Mind to share your Froyo wish list?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Would love a lag fix, but have my doubts it's gonna happen in an official firmware from Kies. What I'm looking forward to the most is Norwegian Swype, the screen rotation lock, integration into Chrome (chrome to phone) and being able to auto-update my apps.
I also heard something about an integrated 'official' task killer?
i'm only looking forward to the Install to EXTERNAL SD card option
and the ability to track each single app that uses the internet
only the app2sd thing to free some space. possible gps fixes? idk. not expecting much really.
i'm an update-whore. i don't know what it will help with a fresh flash, but i want it.
Speed boost. The Nexus One got a major speed boost from FroYo, I'm hoping it's the same way for SGS.
I hope Samsung dumps their RFS file system for something decent like ext2 or ext4.
And to optimise performance so it can beat the Nexus 1 like it should with the powerful hardware it has.
We already know about things like Flash and apps to SD card because they're in the JPC beta firmware (which I'm using).
I would like:
1. Flash
2. Lag fix
3. Speed boost
4. Better contact organisation.
5. GPS Fix
6. (I don't know how ppl call that but on iphone when you want to press bettween two letters when you are typing you got like some magnifier).
7. Serbian Swipe
I hope to see a speed improvement, since the N1 got it too. I really don´t think that it´s needed, because i come from WM6.X and i´m very happy with my SGS, but would be nice.
GPS should be fixed too.
Everything that comes additionaly is welcome
Like others, I'd love to see Samsung replaces RFS with a filesystem that has actually proven itself performance-wise like ext3. I'm not holding my breath, though...

Thanks for pointing it out, I'm expecting GAL support to cover other outlook info, for example phone number contact.
It's funny that you can use "Get Friend" function for FB, Tweeter and myspace, but not Exchange contact via GAL, weird, don't you think so?
It will be good if Froyo can support Landscape mode for desktop like what they show in IFA on another model

All Android phones can support it. The reason it doesn't by default is that it's confusing to some, and causes some display issues and heinous redraw times as you flip from orientation to orientation.
And that Epic/Pro in the picture above doesn't support it either, it just goes right to landscape when the keyboard is open, just like the Droid, MyTouch, G1, etc.
get alternative home screens like launcher pro and you can go landscape. but I hated it. annoying really.

I have car dock module, and I like to put the phone in Landscape mode for GPS. so it comes handy if Tw offer landscape.
The issue with launcher pro is that, it can't call Samsung Widget
I just can't have both world.
I would like (in order):
1. Lag fix
2. GPS Fix
3. Froyo's Speed boost
4. Improved battery life
5. Flash
1. Support for changing tone for calendar reminders
2. Lagfix
3. Remove autocapitalization of I when using Swype (since I mostly write in swedish)
These things I really want since they can almost be considered bugs. But I will of course enjoy everything that gets added with 2.2 like speed boost and such.
1. Lag fix
2. Lag fix
3. Lag fix
And by the way, I really hope they fix the lag...

there is a conflict between 3 & 4.
This ROM is rather incomplete as it is part of a project to backport parts of other HTC Sense 2.2 (Froyo) MDPI ROMs in ordr to have an HTC based Froyo ROM for Eris. Unlike the CyanogenMOD ports which have provided versions for models of their Froyo ROMs which were much easier to work on the Eris and have had 5+ months of painstaking work where this is only on its first month.
I'm just trying to get the optimization aspects done while others get full hardware functionality working, although I may join them soon. So what works? Allot actually. What doesn't? Thanks to Tazz, Tenzo, Conap & Decadance not much (BT audio, camera and WIFI hotspot).
It is fully themed using a combination of contributions providing a clean and somewhat unique Expresso look as well as many common performance tweaks which, to me, have provided a smoother, less choppy feel when interacting with the UI when compared to its parent ROMs.
Please note that portions of this ROM fall under the GPL, Apache and BSD licences. You may find the details of these licences here.
Since I rarely use the camera and never used BT audio I am currently using this as my day to day ROM. That does not mean it provides me a full experience. It is still very bleeding edge.
Features
Fully Expresso Based Themed
Additional Eye Candy
Official Google Reader
OI File Manager (Open Source, Apache License)
No BT Audio, Camera or Wifi Hotspot

Smartass CPU Scheduler (less voltage, automatic sleep cap, etc...)
CPU overclocking & underclocking provided by the feature above
HTC Marketplace in addition to Market
DroidX Boot Screen
No lame rainbow spotted default BG
etc...
New in this Release
Put all stock HTC apps back
Improved stability (less random FCs)
Removed OI Notepad since HTC Notepad works just fine
Added 3D gallery in addition to 2D gallery
Added Car Home (not tested)

NOTE:
Before releasing more updates I am moving my efforts towards helping Tazz & Tenzo with core functionality and take what I can for that and help Kaos with Gingerbread. Once all core functionality is in place for this ROM's parent ROMs I will get this going as a serious ROM with the same focus it has now. So development on this ROM is still 100% active but it is gonna take a bit before you see a new release.

I'm getting the same thing.
I'm getting installation aborted when I try to install it. I did a complete wipe and boot in recovery.
I tired re signing the .zip file I downloaded and even that wouldn't work. I opened it in winRAR just to check and I get a break operation where it says unexpected end of archive and it says there are 0 bytes of data. Properties says its 120MB but I don't have a checksum to verify that the file is intact. It seems whatever was uploaded has been corrupted.
The archive is corrupt. Please re-upload it.

Ditto here.
I downloaded it late last night and it took FOREVER! I see he updated the link... Anyhoo. I was able to get it to install and it seemed pretty smooth/stable. I saw a couple FCs.. one in particular was in Settings > Network > Mobile Net options. Each time I tried to get into that setting page, it would FC. I also tried to get Facebook from the Market and it would never download.
I like the new sense ui though! it looks really clean. I've not sampled Tazz's or Tenzo's yet.
No LWPs worked for me.
Switching back to XTRSense for now.
Keep up the work!

were you able to get bluetooth audio to work? I've been using Tenzo's which is awesome except the bluetooth will connect but i can't hear out of it (which is necessary in CA for driving)
Searched for this, and found CM6 speed test results, but none for CM7 and if the kernels are different, options can be different, so results can be different.
I've tried various ROMs since CM dropped official G1 support, and they're all very similar, but I needed somewhere to document the settings that work best for me.
I only use Quadrant for my benchmarking. I feel it's well-rounded in its tests, it's free, and I get a seemingly completely arbitrary number at the end.
The best Quadrant score I can recall getting was 373, although I can't help but think I once got in the low 400s. I do remember trying every trick I could to get it into the low 300s, but I'm consistently getting 360's and peaking at low 370s with the current setup.
I'm currently running FireRat's CM7 Magpie, version 2011-09-26, which is only one version behind his latest as of this posting. I am running ADW Launcher as downloaded from market (because I like how its menu entries are arranged better -- that's the only reason). I have only 2 screens, and really don't even need that many.

Finally, in MENU/Settings/Applications/Preferred Install Location, SD EXT is selected. In Applications/Development, USB Debugging is on (disabling it did not speed things up any) and stop-via-long-press is disabled (probably no effect).
I *am* running a theme, but since a theme is mainly just picture swaps (I think?) it shouldn't affect much. I'm running GlassMix. Not the coolest, but not bad at all. I rather like it.

Feel free to reply with your best quadrant score and settings that got it -- preferably on the same ROM but other CM7-based ROMs would be welcome comparisons...
The first ,i learn,thanks
Getting a quadrant score of 393 with 2.3.5 GRP CM7, overclock to 614 MHz, purging of assets on, and the disabling verify-bytecode hack. Fastest I have seen on a g1! I get 369 with normal CPU clock.

Might have to try this ROM out. When it first showed up, it seemed to be little more than a compilation direct from CM7 and AOSP sources, which of course anyone who can follow a HOWTO can do themselves... and many have. Back then, I felt this guy was just one more of those guys. I wasn't convinced he really had any developing experience before starting with it, and I really wasn't impressed with him personally, based on comments he made in several threads -- particularly against a known (if sometimes disliked) developer who has contributed a decent amount to the community. I'll have to go back and see what all has been done recently in this ROM if its performance is consistently good enough that the hack you mentioned worked so well (it made no difference on the CM7-Magpie I'm running).
EDIT: Nevermind, turns out I didn't know who I was talking about.. actually, I did know who I was talking about, it just turned out he was someone other than the person who actually started GRP so nevermind all this (read next two posts)...

The guy who made that rom was jbirdvegas, before he made it to the cyanogenmod team. If he made it into cyanogenmod team, he must have known what he was doing.

Oh, okay, then forget my last statement cus I was under the impression it was someone else entirely... maybe someone was going to make their own and started with GRP as a base... but the way I read this guy's posts, it looked like _he_ started GRP. Thanks for the clarification (I probably could have found this out if I had taken time to research the ROM, come to think of it... () )
i get 360s too

Its ok, i know why, you must think dw9906 made the rom, but he was just building the rom and posting it here because jbird gave him consent to do so since he was going to be unable to continue the rom since he was accepted to the CyanogenMod team. I'm not sure if he started GRP by himself, I think it was a couple of people who started it.
Also, i have one question for you, which rom FEELS faster for you, Cyanogenmod 7 Magpie, or ADS Magpie?
I noticed you used to run ADS Magpie and are now running CM 7 Magpie, and I'm just curious to know why.
Good info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uhm, honestly, they do FEEL about the same, which is why speed isn't the biggest concern for me. BOTH of them get laggy at times, and by laggy I mean two things
1) Sometimes scrolling through my apps drawer is blocky (not smooth).
2) Sometimes apps take a while to open, or, simply to do things.
Usually, 1) happens more frequently, but it doesn't bother me as my phone's doing a LOT of things.
2) However, doesn't happen that often on either ROM. However, when it happens, it's always after I've been running several different programs, especially maps with GPS enabled.
Usually, I have most of my phone turned off, so GPS, 3G, rotation, none of that comes into play in the list of things my phone is doing. If I had them running all the time, I'd be on FroYo or Eclair, not Gingerbread. The phone couldn't handle it. Or, I couldn't handle the phone.
In the end, the two are largely the same for me. The main reason I chose Firerat's over And DiSa's is that the Firerat ROM has CPU government built-in, where I have to have a CPU setting utility with ADS. Also, there was some thing or two else that Firerat/CM7 have built-in that ADS/ezGingerbread do not. Maybe the sound equalizer? Not that I run that too often, but it's nice to have.
EDIT: And you're right, I thought it was DW. Plus, you explained there why it must have seemed that DW just picked up someone else's work... he did! but I know now why, and I was missing that info before, so thanks again... Still didn't care for the interaction 'tween him and Firerat but that was something else (and yeah, FR isn't the easiest to get along with but I tend to let peoples' personalities just kinda slide -- usually -- especially in a text forum where tonal variations aren't heard ).
Damn, 311 using froyoByLaszlo
I built this over a year ago, but never put it up on here because I didn't actually own my own Acer Iconia A500 until just this past week, came across the old files, and felt the need to share it.
This preview is small (I'm really bad at making gifs, some assistance there would be nice) But I think I got the speed about right.

Lemme know if there is any issues, I've only dropped this on two tablets so far, with no issues. I haven't trying anything with ICS, so I dunno if that'll effect it or not.
6/24/2012 - I've updated the desc files and hopefully that'll get everything running smoothly, keep me updated with issues and I'll go back to work on it.
6/24/2012 - Thanks JaeKar99 for getting everything fixed for me!
Why not move this post to the appropriate thread?
@Muyami..... Without wishing to discourage or criticise you in any way, I must point out that if you had just looked at the front page of "Iconia A500 Themes and Apps" you would have seen a thread entitled "Publish your A500 Boot Animation efforts HERE". That thread was established in July last year and has, as the title suggests, been the focal point of 99% of all boot animations for the A500, it has covered all kinds of animations including Honeycomb and ICS.
It has been the font and source of a great deal of time and effort from the contributors and has covered all manner of styles and tips including links to complete "walk-throughs" on how to create boot animations.
I would suggest that if you want help or any information re animations that you move this post to that thread. It will also give you the largest audience for your work.
I don't want to put mine in a thread just to be lost. Simple as that.
I also don't feel like I'm going to find any way to get any real feedback if I'm just another post in a year old thread that little to no one may check. By posting my own thread for said theme then new people are going to see it, those who have possibly been wanting a theme similar are going to see it, etc. I looked through the themes thread. And by looked, I mean lazily scanned over it. Thats what most people do. By having a separate thread those who wanted exactly this can find it without 40+ pages of themes that they have absolutely no interest in.
Thats why I didn't put it in the 'appropriate' thread.
My, My, Muyami you certainly are getting your knickers in a twist for someone who has only made 13 posts.
In answer to your post, firstly I would point out the Forum Rules which clearly state that before starting a new thread you check to see it isn't duplicating an existing thread.
Secondly as regards "people not checking the existing thread" I would point out to you that the existing thread has had a total, as of now, of 96,439 "Views" and 410 "Replies".

Ehhhh... best leave the n00b alone. He's looking for "Glory" as he stated.
Anybody who wants to know anything about HC/ICS bootani's knows where to go.
Clearly not looking for friends....
Despite what anyone says, thank you Muyami. That is an awesome Boot animation. and I clearly would not known it existed had you put it in the boot animation thread..a thread I rarely check..
anyway thanks again. I will be throwing this on my tab
OK, this bootamimation is screwing up my tablet.
I downloaded it, put it into place, and rebooted to check it out. Nothing but a black screen. Went back to ROM toolbox's animation installer and put on the bootamimation I was using before. Worked correctly. Moved your boot animation into place using a different file explorer and used ROM toolbox's 'view current animation' feature to try to look at it, the app crashed, and when I went to tap the button on the 'needs to close' window, the entire tablet locked up.
You can see my device info in my sig.
THAT SAID I hope you can get it working on my tab, because it looks awesome. =)
Just had a chance to try it and it just stays on a black screen. Doesn't play the boot animation. Will this work on ICS BL or HC? Im running Flexreaper RV1 Ex. Ed. rv3 with unlocked ICS v4 BL. Hope this helps.
I'm looking into both issues, could be something simple. If someone figures something out lemme know so I can update the files.
Updated download files.
My tablet's on the fritz so I can't properly test it right now, but lemme know if there are any issues.
My tablet's not letting me mount my root directory as r/w, if anyone knows how to fix lemme know. Just got the thing rooted, no bootloaders or anything special.
Okay - took a shot at the issue... The png files are too dense for the gpu to process correctly.. you are getting a boot black out.. '
I converted them to jpgs and slowed the boot down .... A LOT.. Yours was running at 15 frames per second - mine is running at 5...
The desc.txt file was set to run through one loop (4 seconds) then to black screen..
I split off the last image to a separate folder and infinite looped it in the desc.txt file...
Runs smooth like glass on ICS... Download
Have a great one!
Thanks, I knew it was something simple I had overlooked.
Edited first post with updated files.

I suppose you used an older version of Blackthnd3r to get root? If so, you probably have an older "re-mounter" app? Old issue. You have to use the remounter app, then very quickly switch to RE or FM-HD and get r/w. Wait too long and you lose it.
Penalty for not having an unlocked bootloader.
You could try Zero-Null's root tool. Might work for you, and not as much overhead.
BThnd3r has a newer version of his tool also.
Zero-Nulls works better for me.
Then you can test your boot animations for compatibility.
I used ICS root 7, but I'll look at those other things and see if they'll fix my issues.

well it works now. =D
however i won't be sticking with it.
The animations are oddly paced, there are some typos, its Neurotoxin not 'neural toxins', and, well, GLaDOS just dosen't quite sound like GLaDOS.
i'm a stickler for details and storyline exact-ness and this just isn't perfect enough for my high standards =P
however i love the concept, and i look forwards to trying out any other Boot animations you come up with. There need to be more Porta-themed Boot Animations in this world =P
i'm still on the search for an epic BootAni that fits the ICS holo color scheme =P

sent from THIS THING
I'm still rocking it. I dig the aperture logo and the CAKE!
Well, I hadn't finished (or even owned) at the time of making this, Portal 2, where players get to see more about her. While I don't want to reboot this animation, I wouldn't mind doing something better. I was super, super lazy when it came to the Aperture logo starting up, and I want the flicker to be more than me just turning the layer on and off intermittently.
However I am working on a few new ones, Portal themed, something generic with the ICS color scheme, as well as some that I'd just enjoy to make.
Rcv'd back from S-off service June 9.
Root-happy app uninstalling since.
Old firmware.

I think I broke it.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Forgive me.
I thought folks were on 1.30.xxx or even higher by now.
And my battery life is pathetic.
And i keep getting notifications about having connected to my home network without ever leaving the house, I get good signal clear to my car.
Many things to love about HTC 10. A number of things... not so much.
I don't understand your problem. Looks like your phone has the most recent Verizon OTA already.
I swear, I thought I read that a 1.30.xxx was available.
You're right, it appears I have the latest from Verizon.
I thought the newer versions I must have imagined (or maybe other carriers released) would solve all my stock HTC 10 woes.
I sincerely apologize to the forum for my version oversight. I expected to have another OTA by now, restoring my confidence in my flagship phone's ability to function as one would expect.
Don't go by software version numbers for OTA's; the numbers are for internal control, not external tracking. Currently the Verizon 10 is on 1.19.605.22. The 605 means Verizon (Spring is 651). The Unlocked and I believe possibly the Sprint versions are at 1.80 or something. As a sometimes software and hardware tester for HTC I can assure you, the numbers don't mean anything. I see issues with my later test builds that I never see on my retail handset, and the OTA's don't come down until the carriers have approved them, long after HTC is done building and testing.

Why am I not surprised that carriers drag their feet to push valuable updates while urgently putting more bloatware and spyware on my phone...

Every Verizon 10 owner, whether rooted or not, should go into Settings--> App Manager and DISABLE DTIgnite. It's nothing but a bloatware engine. Disable it, remove whatever bloatware you can (or disable it) and you will be rid of it. I disable: Verizon Cloud; Verizon Navigation; CallerID and DTIgnite. I confess, I prefer Messages+ over the default messaging app.

Already annihilated DTIgnite in every way I could find. Man, it was stubborn! I've disabled all Verizon apps except "My Verizon Mobile", instead stripping it of every permission.
I use Signal as my default messaging app, as recommended by Edward Snowden himself! lol
I literally ripped out every bit of software I don't use/need. The default mail app, Zoe, NFL Mobile, Visual Voicemail, all the Amazon apps, the list goes on. Battery has been so poor, however, I thought maybe I broke it.
I unplugged 40 minutes ago and i went from 100% to 94% in that time.
Any idea what app populates /data/system/dropbox ? i found files there logging practically all usage. i have since emptied the folder and changed its permissions so that "system" user no longer had access.
adding that my remedy seems to have worked, and no weird errors have presented themselves

Well, I'd like to actually use the phone, so I don't go quite so far. Zoe I keep active, My Verizon I keep to monitor data usage, Visual Voicemail is now free and actually useful; Amazon apps are definite battery sucks but can be tamed. I didn't to into the way you can fix permissions using App Manager....that was not the point of the earlier post. I'm relatively content with my battery life, but I also run a custom kernel.

Sure, why not? If you're bootloader unlocked and rooted, go for it. Elemental X 0.6 is the last version for the current retail firmware. The later version(s), I think it's up to 0.9, are for the 1.8x base. I wouldn't run it on Verizon until post whenever the OTA drops.

I lack a proper education of how the software actually works at that level in a *nix-like environment, especially Android.
I have intermediate experience with *nix. I've set up DHCP servers and Apache servers, SMB servers and proxy servers. I use CLI or GUI, on x86, x64, and RPi (arm). Rarely, if ever, have I required modifying the kernel of an installation. Not since compiling Gentoo completely from source 10 years ago.
I would benefit from a "for dummies" video when it comes to the many aspects of low-level Android customization.

Well, there are plenty of threads on XDA for that. Bottom line is that once the devices are unlockable, some developers like to cook ROMs, others like to do kernels, still others focus on recoveries. If you stick around long enough, you recognize developers who move from device to device the same way users will through time. The developer of Elemental X kernel, @flar2 is a long-time kernel developer who has done solid work in the past, so I have absolute faith in running his kernels on my handset. The Elite kernel developer, @buckmarble, is also a great kernel developer.
I wouldn't presume to write or code myself. The most I ever do is put things in or take them out of custom ROMs before flashing, but lately I have stuck with stock ROMs until devices are "end of life," (which is why I'm running a custom ROM on my One Max, and will soon probably have to flash a custom ROM to my Nexus 7 FHD). And now that you can run Xposed without modifying system, I can do many of the mods that custom ROMs do.
Well, that was easy.
Elemental X 0.06 has been installed.
I'll report back on battery in a little bit.
changing kernels had no effect on the battery drain. still discharging just as quickly.
