I just bought a XT1687 and rooted it. Somehow I lost my camera and flashlight. No matter what camera app or apk I download, nothing picks the camera up. I have wiped and factory reset but still no camera. I'm on november patch 137-94. And yes, I'm definitely a rookie. I just watch YouTube videos... Can anyone lend me a hand please.
A Fix
I doubt any one cares, but for those of you here in 2018 that still have this broken camera issue after using that Moto G5 Toolkit and wiping out your camera, here is what I did, after 3 days of this trial and error crap.
1. Even though one of the experts suggested it isn't wise, installed RSD Lite from a YouTube video (Yes, I guess RSD Lite is dead and gone but it worked).
2. I then took a shot and downloaded a update that was sliiiiiightly different then what my phone was running. (POTTER_NPN25.137-92_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml). I got it from a google search for my stock. I have a XT1687 and that patch goes to a XT1686 but at this point I had nothing to lose.
3. I used RSD Lite to install the zip and BINGO. I have my camera back and everything else seems to work.
I would go more in detail but I think I'm talking to myself LOL. Anybody needs help with it I will try to help. I'm definitely a novice but I have put this one to bed
Looks like the stock camera software is screwed.. you'll have to manually flash a new OTA when it comes out (dangerous, you can brick your device) or just flash a new ROM.. unless it's hardware but as you described i don't think so

Bought an S4 last week. Everything looked good, I tested the sound, vibrate, gps etc and it all checked out. However, stupid me didn't check the camera (I know I know).
So the whole phone seems to run fine, but the camera (front and back) can't be accessed by stock or 3rd party applications. (Usually "warning Camera Failed" or something similar). I've factory reset, cleared cache and everything. I even installed the nandroid backup from a working phone, but the camera gives the same issue.
Because it's both cameras I thought it had to be software, but after all the resets and cache clears I'm starting to lean toward hardware.
Can someone give me an idea where to start? Would it be camera connectors or motherboard? Is there a sensor that may be causing this? I'd like to get an idea before I start gutting my phone.
Thanks.
Try this if it works for you?

If this does not help, clear RAM with a ram cleaner and try starting the app again?
If that does not help either..flash stock rom via oding
If that does not help..turn the phone off..charge till 100%..turn the phone on..clear the ram..and start camera..

Had this same issue a while back. What solved it for me was to re-flash the stock firmware. I too tried a nandroid backup, it didn't work but the flash did.
Turns out it was software related.
I installed a few stock firmwares that didn't fix anything. I didn't want to wait the 2 hours to download for free from Sammobile.com, but eventually i bit the bullet and got the appropriate (latest) version of my phone. After the reboot it was solved.
Granted, I tried many different firmwares, and some had the same name as the official firmware that i downloaded from sammobile but it did the trick.
Thanks for the pointers
Hi people:
I bought a Xperia X Compact 2 weeks ago. It seems to be a "journalist and commercial" terminal, as it came with version 6.0.1 of Android and did not allow updates via OTA.
I've used FlashTool to put another version of Firmware, the 7.1.1, and everything looks perfect, until I'm going to make a photo.
In the screen is observed to make the photo and I see the "picture" to take, but the touch button of the screen is not working. From that moment, the mobile starts to spend a lot of battery and the photo is not done. If you force the camera to front, a photo comes out completely in green.
I've put ROM 6.0.1 (Journalist and Commercial) back in, but the camera no longer works.
I have not done root.
EDITED:
Sorry. I lost DRM and the problem solved when I install patched Kernel. Problem is solved and I have 7.1.1 "with" DRM.
Thank you for your help
I have the same problem now , anyone know how to repair it
I might be having exactly the same problem. How did you get (and install) the patched kernel?
Thanks.
Recently, I purchased this phone & like all previous Android devices, I usually look to root them for more control & better performance.
The program I used: Moto G5+ Toolkit (TWRP & root). Phone is running Android version 7.0 Baseband version: M8953_13.20.07.21R POTTER_NA_CUST Kernel version: 3.18.31-perf-gb921c2f-dirty [email protected] #1
After the phone flashed, everything was working except the camera & the flashlight.
I've tried everything I know from clearing the caches to uninstalling the camera, reinstalling, updating, different camera apps & safe mode to no avail. The camera worked great prior to unlocking the bootloader/root.
Some further research from around the web shows this has been a major issue yet there appears to be no solutions (possibly reflashing a different OS).
I've backed up the original phone files but I'm not able to reflash it as when I reconnect the Moto G5+ toolkit, I'm given the message "ADB Unauthorized."
Anyone know if there are any solutions/possible patches?
Thank you.
I have the same issue. I'm going to flash the stock rom again and be unrooted for the present, just clean install, with unlocked bootloader. I don't want to risk bricking my device!
OK redid everything, rooted, followed all steps, I"M ROOTED but camera still doesn't work, closes everytime I try to open it, I tried wiping cache thru TWRP recovery but that did nothing.
Same here
With the time I'm spending on this, I am thinking about shooting this phone, literally, and just getting something else. I thought it was just me that can't figure it out as a novice, but it's even looking like the super smart tech people can't figure this one out either. I think I'm going to try one of these custom roms and pray....If you hear a loud shot, it's just me killin my g5.

Did it work after installing any custom ROM? I am facing the same issue here.

I fixed this problem for my Moto G5 Plus. If your device is indian version (XT1686), install stock ROM. I was facing same issue. Installed below stock rom.

Hello, My phone's (main)camera is not being registered by the stock camera app , neither by Gcam. But it shows up in apps like instagram and snapchat and works just fine, no crashes or such. I tried resetting my phone through settings and the ****ty bootloader you get with a locked H870DS (un rootable) model and it didn't seem to work.
What I am thinking is, there's something wrong with the camera ID allocations of the camera but still confused as to why even after resetting, it won't work. Any way that I can erase the system and other partitions and do a fresh stock os installation? UGH it was so easy with root. Lg made a great device ****ty by locking it down for me.
Update: So I forgot to add how I came to the conclusion of camera ID being allocated wrongly. When I try to open the stock camera app by long pressing and selecting 'Selfie cam' , it opens up the wide angle rear camera. Either the front cam is done for or my device is.
So everyone's in quarintine but no one wants to help?
Hey,
today i tried to recreate your problem, and i got your problem.
Problem came when i flashed Pixel Experience Android 10 ROM against branded stock Android 9 (branded by Polish Play).
How to solve it? After many trial and errors, problem dissapeared when i flashed stock Android 8 (branded by Polish Play in my case), and did FOTA update.
I hope i helped.
After flashing the unbranded firmware and rooting the phone, I'm not able to use the camera app. Opening it just says "Camera Failed. In the slide down menu, the flashlight icon is turned on even though I'm not actually using the flashlight. and I cant turn it off either. How do I fix this?
I've tried: clearing data & cache of camera app, clearing the cache partition, setting default settings of the camera app, changed camera storage from SD card to internal & vice versa

Sucks no one responded to your post. I rooted my sons S7 Edge and sometime after it acquired the same issue yours has/has. I had another S7 Edge phone so I ended up rooting that one and giving it to him. I still have his old one with the camera fail issue but I've yet to try to figure out what caused it to happen. I know my response doesn't help with info or duration from OP post to reply, I just wanted to let you know that your post wasn't ignored by everyone. Unfortunately I have nothing substantial to contribute.

So I ended up putting that phone back to stock then rooting it again and it had the exact same issue yours has. I did a clean root too and the issue is still present. From there I decided to again run it back to stock and this time do a nand erase all and repartition the device. After all was finished I checked the device and I'll be goddamned... it still has the same issue. So if the problem persists after all that reformatting is it safe to say that it's a hardware issue? I'm out of ideas. Sorry I couldn't help you.

you guys offer little information at all so this is why no one helps you. Maybe tell what firmware version you flashed what root version you did etc. There is a big difference between bootloader revB/11 and the others
Holy ****. Did I just get constructive suggestions from jrkruse?! Dude if you told me I could fix my phone by sucking a fart out of a wallaby's ass I'd do it cuz the advice came from you, and if there's one thing I know it's that you know your ****. You're ****in' awesome. I feel so special now. Ok sorry about that...
Well, I'm not too sure about the OP but I can tell you about the phone I have that seems to have the same issue.
My S7 Edge is a SM-G935V on android 7.0 on update 4BQK2. Prior to rooting I put everything to stock then I did a NAND erase and repartition. No issues with any of that.
I rooted my phone from this post

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY OF YOUR ISSUES! ALL I CAN DO IS RECOMMEND A GOOD PSYCHOLOGIST! Hey guys. Stumbled on this by accident. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHY IT WORKS, BUT IT DOES. THE METHOD HAS BEEN TESTED BY ME AND A FEW OTHER PEOPLE HERE...

which directs to your older method for gaining root privileges.

I also flashed Unzip the Nougat_S7_Root_2_82_All_Carriers_V2.
Then I flashed the BL file in the BL slot from the G935U firmware with odin checking "Phone Bootloader Update". I used the BL file from G935UUES4BRA1 since it's the closest update for the U brand to the firmware this phone is on (G935VVRU4BQK2)
I'm aware that there are newer methods for gaining root access but I chose this method cuz I used it back in 2017-2018, I had read all the posts in the thread, and I knew it worked.
I currently have 3 S7 Edge phones all on the same firmware and build and are all rooted with the same combo method I just explained. The other 2 phones also have xposed installed and they both work well.. expect mine says weird stuff instead of the callers information. I think it only does it if they're a contact but in the notification tab it says an example like this 5556661234;verstat=No-TN-Validation. No clue how to fix that.
The phone that is having the same issue as the OP still had access to the private/secure folder when it was rooted; which I thought was weird cuz mine doesn't and from what I understood private mode gets disabled if the phone's rooted. Maybe it only gets disabled if you install xposed? I don't know. My son had the phone with the issue and it was his first smart phone and he dropped it a few times (with a case) so I was thinking it's an effect from something he downloaded from the play store (he's 20 now but pretty still very ignorant with android). Now I'm not sure if it's a software or hardware issue since the problem persisted after the NAND erase.
Something to note about my sons old phone also is that it has 2 thin pink lines running down one side of the screen (defective/dead pixels) and when the screen turns off it it flashes once before actually turning off. One time over the phone I tried troubleshooting the issue with him and he ended up being able to use his camera immediately after rebooting the phone though once he exited the camera app it wouldn't open again. We were trying a bunch of things, force closing any app I thought would be related to the issue. Not sure what allowed it work when it did, but even now right after a reboot the camera app still crashes.
This was long ago, I've since lost the phone. But, I was on the A bootloader and on OREO rooted using @/billa's method using an ENGboot file. I tried everything possible to get the camera to work including flashing back to stock but nothing helped. I just gave up finally. @kanesglove maybe try safely updating the firmware. Hope it helps
