Best HU for Gen10 \ 2016+ Honda Civic - Android Head-Units

Hey all, I own a 2017 Honda Civic with the Android based infotainment unit. The unit is quite slow and laggy at times when I have my apps I wish to have running on it installed (Google play services, Igo, PlayerPro & tunein radio)
So I am in the market for a good and reliable Android radio, preferably a unit with 2+gb or ram and a decent amount of internal storage.
Anyone else out there been looking? I've looked at Phoenix and ownice but I haven't gotten firm answers to my questions I've had and there hasn't been a lot on reviews after a few months of ownership.
In the past I've owned a offbeand rockchip unit, a crappy newsmy & Indash units. So I've done my share of owning horrible units and seeing how I plan to keep this car for a while I'd like to get a unit that will last a while as well.
Joying seems to be the brand I hear about often in here, sadly they don't have a unit for my year civic.
Edit. I did some searching and found this...
Dasaita 10.2" Android 8.0 Car GPS Radio Player for Honda Civic 2015-2016 with Octa Core 4GB 32GB Auto Multimedia Stereo video 4G
http://s.aliexpress.com/7bQFfI7n?fromSns=
It's running a px5 octacore. Seems like these guys seem to know their stuff from research?

Well I took a leap and bought the unit. Huge mistake. The unit is flawed. Horrible FM reception, the audio goes out completely on the radio whenever the automatic doors lock or unlock and have been totally left high and dry by the company and Quick Yaun who is the representative from them.
Flat out acoid this company and their garbage. Apparently Pheonix audio in the USA is the same company under a different name. So I would also avoid them as they are just a reseller of dasaita

That sucks man. I cant stand our radios. Old ass OS with just as old hardware in a brand new car.

It's true! My factory unit works OK with a few add-on programs but anything past having Igo & tune in radio installed the thing starts to lag badly. I attempted to put the store, music and services on the unit but that brought the thing to a crawl. For now I'm back using the 8 year old radio in my next to new car till the replacement mainboard comes for the dasaita unit. Here's hoping it works otherwise I wasted a good chunk of change in a radio that's a doorstop lol.

I believe the slowdown is coming from google play services, dont install Google Play Services as it i will deeply bog down the HU.

Cheap Android headunit with Parrot Audio?

Hi All,
I'm after a new headunit for my Mazda MPV 2004. I currently have a Parrot Asteroid Smart in my old car which I did like, but also had it's flaws (old version of android, low spec hardware, no physical buttons/dials). I did however love the bluetooth and voice command options.
I've since been looking for a (cheap-ish) Android unit that I can install in the Mazda and honestly I'm overwhelmed! There are so many options now compared to a few years ago when I got the Parrot. I was looking at units like these and was almost convinced to take a gamble and accept that the bluetooth calling would not be as good as the Parrot (I've owned some Eonon units before):
Eonon - http://eonon.com/Car-GPS/Android-Car-GPS/G2110F.html
Pumpkin - http://www.autopumpkin.com/car-dvd-...s-navigation-system-support-3g-wifi-obd2.html
Then I found this:
Avin - https://avinusa.com/7-universal-dou...android-multimedia-navigation-system-159.html
Which got me thinking, are there any other 'no name' units that use the Parrot bluetooth technology that anyone would recommend? Or at least have decent quality bluetooth audio otherwise and preferably voice command? Any hands on experience and reviews would be much appreciated!!
That's the only one I've found listed with parrot. I passed on it becase of the 800 x 480 resolution. Seems people like the Newsmy for Bluetooth calls and Google now works (Newsmy owners, correct me if I am wrong).
Thanks, I'll check out the Newsmy, hadn't heard of them. What did you end up going with twokidsandaphone?

I actually first ordered a lower cost unit from a seller called "Umecity". I changed my mind and even though the order was officially shipped, it had not been given to DHL yet and they let me cancel, which was awesome of them. That unit has an Allwinnertech chip, not the RK3188. It was less than $300 CDN, shipped, but I was concerned about BT and radio quality (and since it was for my wife I decided to err on the side of caution). All of their units get very good reviews though, still tempted... maybe for my car.
At any rate my requirements were:
Universal 7" 2 Din
Steering wheel controls (resistive type)
Support large external drive (for FLAC files)
1024 x 600, quad core
Joying units don't support large external drives (most list 32 gb as max), and I saw quite a few complaints about the Bluetooth quality even after mic fix.
Ownice units do support the large drive, but the later posts in the thread suggest quality issues and lack of support from the seller
2nd gen Tonghai units - couldn't find one I liked, can't remember everything that took it off the list
So that only left Newsmy; seems a high quality unit with good radio reception (SiLabs chip), dual Bluetooth (one for calls, one for android), and lots of xda support.
I ordered the NR3001 this morning. Downside was it was over double the cost of the first one that I cancelled (~$600 CDN, of which $131 was shipping). Hope it's worth it! Note the CDN dollar sucks now, so not nearly as bad in US$.
Jeff
P.S. I currently have a PAS in my car - still mostly like it.

Thanks for the info Jeff, when your unit arrives and is installed I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences.
This new unit will also be for my wife's car, she has basically the same requirements as you except there is no need for large storage expansion, ipod compatibility and a physical dial for volume (she hates the touch screen volume of the PAS, although if steering wheel controls work I wouldn't think that would be an issue, just have no idea how to wire them up...)
Cost is also an issue, I'm in Australia so those cheap US prices get high really quick for Australia!

Hi Jeff,
I had a google and couldn't find this unit. Can you send me a link for comparison, and perhaps to the reviews too?
Thanks!
I couldn't find it on Google either. The reviews are just those of the customers of the seller. They sell the same unit in a few different vehicle specific versions. Their universal version is linked below. No buttons or knobs though...

(from AliExpress Android)

P.S. The Newsmy arrived today. In the middle of a bathroom reno so will be a little while before I can try it out.

Just so you know, Pumpkin have just released a new product that uses a Parrot module, the links below
http://www.autopumpkin.com/pumpkin-...t-dab-mirrorlink-aux-output-obd2-wifi-3g.html
Regs
I am torn between the Pumpkin with Parrot Bluetooth and the Newsmy NR-3001.
Pumpkin works out cheaper because of Free Shipping vs AUD$133 for the Newsmy, but the Newsmy's already active ROM development is appealing.
Decisions, decisions........
I'm curious about the Pumpkin unit now too, I have heard reasonable things about Pumpkin in the past when they were WinCE units. I still haven't decided on anything for the wife's car yet but I need to soon. When I get something I'll be sure to post a review for anyone else in future.
I'd be interested in what everyone else here chooses and their experiences with their chosen unit too.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts Glen.
Having read through some of the Newsmy thread and the xdAuto ROM thread, I am leaning towards the Newsmy.
*UPDATE*
So in the end I went with price above all and purchased an Eonon G2110F Android headunit. I have to say I have been quite happy with the unit, it is much more responsive than the Parrot Asteroid Smart and runs apps natively, without any drop in audio quality like the smart. One issue which was sort of expected, is the sub-par bluetooth microphone quality. I expected the quality to not be too great, especially compared to the Parrot Smart, but it is so bad that most of the time I have to tell my wife to call me when she gets home because I can't hear her!
I am going to try to find an aftermarket bluetooth microphone to try instead, does anyone recommend anything that has good quality for a unit like this one?

Haven't you read about the BT problems we all have? The only way to fix it is the mod of the motherboard.

Basically all units that I'm aware of. Even the new Pumpkin claiming Parrot BT suffers from the same problem. I've have the new Pumpkin too.
The main problem is the two microphones (internal-external) are connected in parallel. I've done the mod on my four units and after that it's okay.
You still need a better mic since the Chinese mic is crap. I'm using a Parrot mic and the mod.

Hi halloj, Eonon sent me this link to a video replacing the internal mic - https://drive.google.com/a/eonon.com/file/d/0B4MwM-4-7u6TbkxkcnByN0thMjA/view?usp=drive_web
I'm wondering if I removed the mic completely if it would default to the external mic, or if simply desoldering it would not be enough? Perhaps replacing it with a better quality mic like the video would be sufficient? Any thoughts, you seem to have done this a few times!

I can say that I am pretty happy with the Newsmy. I installed xdAuto on it (source code for the Newsmy leaked and XDA developers built a great ROM). With xdAuto the user interface is pretty good; there are a set of icons along the bottom of the screen that allow you to switch quickly between different apps without first going to the launcher home screen. Audio focus works properly, meaning that when you, say, start a song on Spotify, the audio from the radio app (or whatever other source) stops.
I find the sound quality quite good even without equalizer running (xdAuto has viper included) . There are occasional background noises (most apparent with silent sections of a track when at a light) but practically speaking they are not noticeable when driving.
the Bluetooth for hands free calling while not nearly as good as the Parrot is quite useable.
OBD2 Bluetooth reader/Torque works flawlessly.
Steering wheel controls work on every app I've used which can be an issue with other units.
Radio reception is good, but the radio app does not have RDS implemented. Apparently the silabs tuner chip is of high quality and has RDS support but the Newsmy programmers/subcontractors could not figure out how to implement it. XDA developers offered to help but were given the run around with promises of MCU source code that was never provided.
I can use Google Now voice commands to start Spotify, navigation, make calls, etc. Again not as good as the voice recognition implementation on the Parrot in terms of accuracy but a reasonable success rate.
Complaints I or other users have had:
Google maps is choppy when starting to navigate. I mostly use Waze which works very well.
Screen washes out in direct sun.
Audio control is abysmal. No control over sub out level or crossover. No native eq. All you get is a screen for balance/fade that is implemented by providing four separate volume controls for FL/FR/RL/RR.
USB DVR camera kills internal/external mics for Android (not Bluetooth calls), not an issue if you don't need/want to run a dashcam or don't care about voice commands
USB devices do not go into standby properly. If you are short of boring material to read you can see my posts on the xdAuto thread on it. This problem led to my music app often rescanning my large music collection when coming out of standby. I found a work around by modifying a USB hub to provide power all the time.
Don't expect much/any support from Newsmy on technical or warranty issues, but not many have had quality issues, and it always boots in both the extreme heat and bitter cold of Canadian summers/winters. I've had the unit apart and the PC board quality/assembly seems better than pics I've see of other Chinese units.
With all those pros/cons I did decide to buy two NR3001s and don't regret it. They are not perfect but I still believe the best option there is from my reading here on XDA. It might be that if I was buying now/next couple of months I might try the indash.net octacore but it seems there are still issues to work out, maybe wait and see..

Best Android version + manufacturer??

So far, in all the searching I've done thus far before registering, I couldn't seem to find anything that really satisfied my wonders about these headunits.. The best versions seem to be the 4.4.x headunits, as it seems most people have problems with 5.1.x headunits (ie, lagging, crashing, etc) and there's now a few 6.0 headunits (Ownice C500 and Pumpkin I believe has one).
My problem with the 4.4.x headunits are that they all seem to carry 1GB of ram. 2GB seems to be the sweet spot, but is only found on a FEW of the 5.1.x headunits which inevitably seem to fail due to the seemingly awful roms. That being said, I'm highly interested in the Ownice C500 due to built in 4G (with sim slot), 2GB ram and a choice between 4core/8core (I'd be fine with the 4core, I plan on simply only listening to music and not running any apps except torque).
The problem with Ownice is that it changed name from Winlink directly to Ownice and dropped the old moniker, and I'm not too sure why. Pumpkin seems okay, but everything is 1GB ram I believe. Joying seems good, but it seems they have quite a few issues too. I know that none of these will be GREAT (price v quality issues, etc) but which do you guys feel are best? I'm super picky and don't make decisions until I know for certain that I'm getting exactly what will work for my needs.
Maybe I should create a poll?
Also, I'm quite attracted to the Newsmy Carpad but it seems they have some MCU issues and it doesn't seem to be the most premium headunit.
edit: I know that most of these units are mass produced by the same manufacturer, not sure whether to call these companies "manufacturers" or "distributors."
If you are so picky...then don't go to any of them.
All have more or less something wrong....but if you check for the price.... the mtcd type units (2gb ram) is under my opinion the best choice

I'm thinking the same things as you!
Mainly the issue with bluetooth, and handsfree mic is disturbing.
Apperantly JBL has a model on their way. CP100 which is a Carplay / Mirrorlink / Android Auto Head Unit. It has been delayed since 1Q 2016 so maybe it will hit the market soon?
It's 399$ though - but maybe the higher price is going to be shown in better stability and higher quality..

Don't forget the Sony XAV-AX100 is being released right about now.
A little more expensive but a good looking unit.
I'm trying to figure out my next move and it's hard at the moment.
I bought a cheap MTCD to replace my Newsmy that died earlier this year but there are a few things bugging me, like the Bluetooth that people can't hear me through and the broken h.264 decoding.
Still deciding if I try another unit like the Joying 2gb or Ownice C500 or do I just go with a Sony or Kenwood unit and know I'll get decent quality..

The AX100 looks promising but it doesn't run Android on its own sadly! The benefit of mirroring both Android and iOS is awesome though. Not too sure if I'd prefer having CarPlay to rely on or if I'd rather have a standalone unit that I can tether BT for calls.

No, the JBL and Sony don't run Android themselves.
Personally, I'm realizing that apart from being able to customize it a bit more, I don't care for most of my usage.
Android Auto or Carplay running on good hardware that gets the basics right is almost more important to me now.

If you want to run CarPlay or Android Auto, the sweet spot price/performance wise is the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX.
Costs twice the typical Chinese android head unit ($500), but it's rock solid reliable.
On the other hand , the MTCB or MTCD units are far more customizable. And cheaper.

Yeah those NEX units are SWEET, but I'm a broke college student so I can JUST afford a Chinese unit. I definitely would've splurged on a NEX or the AX100 if I had the money (which I don't). :\
That's why I'm looking to figure out the general feelings about which manu.'s are best and what everyone feels is the best unit or MCU/Android Version combo.

That's my issue too. I've had a couple of units, thinking i'll write my own launcher and stuff and have a great time..
In the end, I spend so much time fighting with the basics to just listen to the radio or make a phone call.
Android Auto / Carplay is the changer for me with decent maps, phone and messages without the hassle.
I'll probably still play around with a tablet in the car or something, but the main unit will be a brand name one that handles all the day to day stuff.

Several places sell these Pioneer NEX and the equivalent Kenwood units (factory rebfurb) for $50-100 less.
Pioneer also has a cheaper option, the Appradio, which deletes the DVD player and some other features, but still gives you good Bluetooth and CarPlay. They do not advertise Andoid auto, but it has good Android support.

JVC is coming out with a new DVD head unit that supports CarPlay, but they are not supporting Android Auto yet, apparently. JVC is actually owned by Kenwood, and most people are satisfied with their higher-end models.
That Sony looks interesting, have not heard much from the people who have gotten it though. It's brand new...the Pioneer and Kenwoods are in their third gen CarPlay/Andoid auto models and have worked though many little bugs it seems.
The JBL Android auto head unit seems to be infinitely delayed.
The JBL Android delay could be connected to the Harman (Who owns JBL) is about to be sold to Samsung.
Samsung wants Harman so they can compete in "connected technology" which in my terms also include Head Units.
I'm from Denmark, the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX is not sold here.
The frequencies used in some other countries, like Europe, are even (102.8).
The frequencies used here in the US are odd numbers (102.7) and can not be changed.
I guess that's why it's an US only Head Unit.
THe SPH-DA120 is sold here. It looks promising. It doesn't support Android Auto though.
So i'm thinking.. How bad can it be?
You need a HDMI cable, an HDMI adapter. Then you need to setup som funky Bluetooth settings. And after all that **** you can stream music and talk on the phone. No Navi-mirroring etc.
No way i'm going to buy an Iphone to get this to work. So the DA120 is still a no go.
Take a look at this youtube video to see what i mean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvTU7fVnmRs
Can someone please tell me why it so hard to put in "Hassle free" and both Wireless Android Auto and Wireless Apple Carplay in to a Head Unit

just got a Dasaita Hot Audio V600 for a Jeep Wrangler

So i have posted several times on this board about my various Joying units, and I have a thread about my Seicane:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...cane-10-1-inch-android-6-0-head-unit-t3656383
However it lacked the Dormancy that Joying had and the sound wasn't great on it. So I decided to pick up a @hotaudio unit, in particular this one:
Dasaita 10.2" Android 6.0 Car GPS Player for Jeep Wrangler
I got it in the mail on Tuesday, I made an unboxing video here:
https://youtu.be/z1v2t8cSNvc
I also have it installed, that video isn't up yet. But so far so good, it seems to take most of the best features of the Joying and Seicane and mesh them together. It is also a PX5 MTCD, so it has a lot of MTCD like features that my original Joying had, so it is like a bit of nostalgia for me. However thanks to the Octacore and 2GB of RAM, it doesn't have the slowness of my original 1GB of RAM Joying unit.
How is the fit and finish of this unit when installed? I have the Joying 6.2 2GB Sofia unit and love it. Sounds WAYYYY better than that stock crap I had. Interested in this one though. Does it work with all apps, most importantly waze? One more thing where did you order it from? Ebay?
it fits better than the Seicane model I had previously. The Seicane seemed to look spot on color-wise, but the Hot Audio is a smidgen darker than the other plastic. However the Hot Audio is also harder than the Seicane, so it installs easier. Still sucks to install, but not as bad as the Seicane.
So i definitely like it better than the Seicane, and it looks much better than the Joying. I have over a year experience with Joying, so I'm waiting to see how the Hot Audio turns out.
So far, I'm loving it, everything works like a champ, Waze included. The sound quality is top notch, maybe even better than Joying
Install video is up
Thanks for the video.
My unit comes in Tuesday.
My Car is a 2008 civic SI.
The Hu is not compatible with the stock amplifier. I'll need to use a metra 70-1722 as the middle man and figure out how to integrate the stock amp.

Cool, post some pics. After seeing mine, my buddy wants one for his Camry.
I am pretty happy with mine, just one issue I need to figure out.
When using Auto Sleep, the USB will randomly not mount properly when it wakes from sleep.

I know you guys haven't really had a long enough time to test the features of this unit.. but i'm in the market as a first time android head unit owner and was considering the joying (JY-UM135N2, 2 gb, sofia), but also would consider others.. is the Daisaita worth looking at?
Not sure what the price of the unit is since when I click the "buy now" link.. nothing opens. Hah.
Thanks!
You have to buy from eBay or Aliexpress.
I have both the Joying and the Dasaita.
If Dasaita can fix this one bug, then it is one to go for.
Joying has always been a good thing for me
Here is the hidden MicroSD card
Here is a video about wiring a PAC harness to a Joying.
The same principles would apply to Seicane or Dasaita. And if the default harness doesn't work with the Alpine and/or Infiniti, it will definitely work with a PAC.
Does this thing support HD Radio, by the way? I was looking into getting the universal version (Nissan I think is the universal one), but I don't see any mention of it being supported.

I don't think any of these Chinese head units support that

I am not a great reference here, I almost never get phone calls. Pretty much all of my calls are just to test to make sure it works.
However they seemed fine

are Eonon's projects or can they be every day no drama units?

I have a 2012 Chevy traverse with a stock head unit and I was looking at replacing it to get a better maps function (google maps/apple car play was what I was looking for). having watched the head units for the last 2 years the most recent one finally seemed to fit the bill in having apple car play.
After doing a bit of research and noticing the new unit went from a PX-5 with 4 gb's of ram to a PX-30 with 2 gb's of ram, and reading all the threads on boot loops, freezing, standby power draw and if it loses all the pre-set radio stations etc. I'm at a loss as to if these units are good projects for computer savvy folks or if they're ready for folks like my wife to use day to day? I'm fairly computer savvy and could do half these projects like installing new heatsinks or even CPU's, I had considered just upgrading the ram to 4 gb's before I noticed that the PX-30 doesn't support 4 gb's (which I think is just stupid) but having 2 kids under 4 and a busy job I'm not looking to buy a new head unit that will become something I need to troubleshoot not infrequently.
looking for any insight you might have. I'm not looking to watch youtube or netflix or use a bunch of apps on it, really just looking for run of the mill apple carplay, google maps, radio etc. should I be able to expect that trouble free or are these units a bit more of a project/underpowered?
Thanks for the help!
I'm getting along with my PX30 unit from Eonon. The stock UI stinks.. I really like FCC car launcher. I have the one with the 10.1" display.
You'll need to contact support and ask for the latest software upgrade.. some bug fixes in there.

Newbie Is it worth getting a Android head unit? I been debating if it's better to go pioneer or try android

I been wanting to update my old head unit and tried looking in here for info but I can't find anything for my questions but my main question is the android units pretty mature that it's smooth and you don't have to really worry about it it just works ? I have no clue on what brands are pretty good I seen joy alot and are people here modding the head units and making them run better?
I am also interested in the feedback from the more experienced Here.
I want to install a large screen Android in our motorhome, but don’t want something that doesn’t work well.

I recently purchased Topway TS10 unit. My first Android HU, actually my first Android device also.
If I had to do it again I would look for a unit that can be rooted fully - otherwise you are at total mercy of Chinese vendor who may ignore you, give you wrong information or will simply not understand your question.
Based on my, rather limited, knowledge, 3GB RAM CC2 Plus from Alibaba would be on top of my list.

I've had some personal experience with both options. Last year I purchased a top-of-the-line Pioneer HU (AVIC W8500NEX) and installed it in my Toyota Highlander. I had nothing but trouble with it. Random reboots and freeze-ups. Replaced the HU once and the CanBus adapter once but problems persisted. I finally gave up and recently purchased a Sygav PX6 android HU. The first HU died after one day. The second HU has been working well other than a few quirks that are well documented in this forum.
So, I don't think there is a clear answer here. I completely understand the concerns about purchasing an off-brand HU, but name brand HU's are not without problems as well.
I've been in this game quite a long time. Heck., I was in this game years ago when it was WinCE.
Functionality wise, the top brands have been playing catch up for years. In the case of some of them, they even went down the WinCE route, so as to provide a pathway to all the great software that was available (iGo Primo, for example).
Where the Chinese head units are playing catch-up, has always been the sound quality. Historically, Chinese Head Units have used very low quality amplifier IC's which give a very mediocre sound.
Then we got the generic Android Head Units and again, the big brand manufacturers were playing catch up, except it's not a level playing field. I doubt big brands would be allowed to ship an almost stock Android Head Unit as they are not 'actually safe' for cars. They are the kind of thing which would have to be sold with a 'Not Road Legal' label attached.
So you've got the CarPlay and Android Auto options coming out of the big brands and you've got the generic Android kit coming out of the Chinese brands. Except, the Chinese brands have now caught up with the sound quality. The PX5 units I had in my BMW and Audi had exceptional sound quality.
As for the quality and reliability. I've always had good luck with Chinese units until recently. My WinCE badgers never failed me. Two PX5's didn't fail either (6 months and 2 years).
So, I got a PX6 for my Jetta as a treat to myself. I was mezmerized by the speed but the first thing I noticed on day 1 is that it ran hot. The PX5 ran comparatively cool and the issue with electronics when they get hot is the lifespan shorten and as this thing ran hot seemingly all the time, it unfortunately didn't last a month, and was returned with an amp defect.
I'm now on a Xtrons MA series, which is basically a Junsun V1 Pro. Performance wise, it pales in comparison to the PX6 and tbh, it even feels a bit sluggish compared to the PX5. However.... it has an extremely good DSP which means the sound quality utterly blows away the PX6, which was already decent btw. It also has some other nice features like Android Assistant that is actually able to dial via your phone properly (it never worked on the PX5), CarPlay for your iPhone, Android Auto if you want it....
So the gap between what Pioneer are knocking out and these Chinese head units is actually massive at this point and it's in favour of the Chinese stuff. You can literally buy a Chinese head unit that offers the same functionality as the Pioneer (CarPlay etc), and more (Android 10) and similar sound quality.
Big manufacturers are on borrowed time. In-built stuff with new cars + these units for old cars are literally the death knell.
You are not comparing apples with apples - genuine units are Android Auto, Chinese origin greyboxes are a hacked Android and are NOT Android Auto. They have two very different use cases.
The problem with Chinese origin knock off Android head units is the lack of recourse, support and consumer protection.
The resellers stop communicating when bugs and problems get hard for them, leaving buyer stuck or out of pocket.

My Chinese unit also offers Android Auto and CarPlay via USB, hence my point that I am able to access numerous ecosystems here. Android, Android-Auto, CarPlay.
I think there is some truth to your statement with regards to lacking resource and consumer protection but your best bet is buying from one of the more legitimate UK based resellers. I've bought my last three from Xtrons and the one which failed, they took back in an instant and refunded the money. It's a gamble but it's hardly a risky gamble, we're talking a few hundred pounds here, and if you're sensible and buy through a protected platform like Amazon, you'll be fine.
In my experience, quality control issues usually manifest themselves within a very short period of time. In my case, it was less than a month. If your unit is still going strong after 3-4 then I'd say you're onto a winner. The bugs are usually bitty I find. My PX5 and PX6's were really smooth and powerful, but had irritating little 'misses' like Google Now couldn't make a call via Bluetooth, which is more like a missing feature than an actual bug. This new unit doesn't feel particularly buggy UI wise, but it's definitely not as powerful.... However, it offers some really clever features that the PX5 and PX6 didn't, such as calling via Google Now right out of the box and separated volume channels for different things. Higher clock speeds aren't everything. I've not made up my mind on it currently, but as it costs £260 inc delivery and brought a whole load of surprisingly useful extras the PX5/6 don't, I think I am OK with it.
One thing I would point out here:
Any aftermarket radio that offers apps or 'AppRadio-esque' functionality is at the mercy of manufacturer. The ecosystem they selling against is essentially a moving target. I think the big brands get let off so easily here.
AppRadio – Apps on Google Play
Turn your car into a connected car with Pioneer AppRadio
play.google.com
The Pioneer AppRadio app above has a wonderful 2 star rating on Google Play. Is it any wonder? A number of the early App Radios (1-4 definitely) are now dead if used with official software. The only alternative is AppRadio Unchained which is effectively a screen mirroring app and a right mess to get working. Let's not pretend that you're good for life if you get yourself a Pioneer or Sony. You are merely on a countdown and eventually they'll pull the plug.
In the case of a Chinese radio, it's usually however long it takes for the hardware to become obsolete and unusable, if the hardware itself doesn't fail. My PX5's were running the latest apps and my oldest was bought in 2018. I expect this current unit will keep going for a similar amount of time, albeit not as quick as I'd like. Tl:dr, I think it's naive to think we buy radios (including big brand) to last 5-10 years. At the price point they exist, we should be happy with 3 years. Not many people keep their cars much longer than that anyway.
