I hate google contacts and phone (in call ui) apps but when i disable the 2 apps and try install different ones (like samsungs for example) I get an error message (app not installed), any way to get this sorted? Thanks

Never tried, but maybe don't disable the default apps. Then set the new apps as default.
There's a conflict cos of the same app names (contacts and phone)

Samsung dialer is not compatible with stock Android. You need to have Samsung framework installed to use the dialer because it is made specifically for Samsung phones. OnePlus Dialer, Sony Dialer and other phone brand specific dialers won't work either. You need to download a third party dialer from the Play Store that is generic Android compatible and then change the default dialer to your downloaded app. The Samsung dialer shouldn't even show up in the Play Store when you are using this phone because it's not compatible.
Which 3rd party contacts apps do you recommend?

It drives me nuts that Google Contacts app does not support storing to phone memory. Which 3rd party apps to you recommend?

For those running AOSP, CM, AOKP based roms and so forth, anyone find the dialer app rather limited and aesthetically none too pleasing to look yet, lack of features etc.
Coming from a HTC phone, I loved their dialer and contacts app. However, the rom is naturally bloated with other junk that is not always needed.
Has anyone replaced their stock dialer with a third party app and found it a reliable solution? I assume it's a case of deleting the system dialer defaults, cache etc and forcing the phone to choose the third party app as the main dialer?
Or, can the third party dialer app be made a system app?
With the system dialer being so embedded, incoming call would still come through rom phone app and not the third party app?
On a similar level, what other system apps have folks replaced in favour of another app which you feel is better suited for your needs? All be it SMS, email apps etc.
Thanks.

I find the stock dialer fine. Other options I have tried is Go Contacts and Ex Dialer which are quite feature filled. I agree with you when you say that stock dialer doesn't look good which is why I use custom themes

This is Android - just install a new dialer, SMS program, launcher, whatever. The system will ask if you want it to be the default app, select "always" and you're done.

I downloaded the google dialer and google contact manager apps that work with the Axon 7. I am not rooted and I don't like the default dialer and contact manager. I sidedloaded the google dialer and contact manager. But there was no way I could set them as the default. I installed an app called HideApp and that let me disable the mifavor contact manager so now it uses the google one by default. However, I could not disable the mifavor dialer as it was grayed out. I can use the google dialer to initiate calls but all incoming calls are handled by the stock dialer. Is there any way without root to set the default dialer?
Mine did that, with root and completely freezing the stock dialer. I've read a few others experienced this too.
You need some framework found in custom roms in order to get rid completely of mi favor incoming call interface.

Yep I was afraid of that. Didn't really want to root quite yet. Thanks for the info.
I use these without any problem. I like the way they work.

call ui changed?
Does anyone have a list or can we compile a list of apps and services we can uninstall or freeze with out negative consequences? I know people use different apps/methods to accomplish this, I.e. I use TiB, so any input would be fantastic!!!
I use TiBu as well....
Here's what I've froze with no issues:
ZTE SMS messenger
ZTE Email
ZTE Calendar
ZTE Music
I flashed the Pixel phone and froze the ZTE phone - not currently doing though, didn't really use the "Google" features of the Pixel dialer, plus I had issues with the contacts crashing when adding a name.
I read someone is freezing the ZTE Locker, which is the ZTE lockscreen, this gets replaced with the stock Androind lockscreen.
A2017 (chinese) 4GB/128 GB
Hi, I froze anything but the dialer without any issues. I installed Swipe Dialer Pro, which looks and feels like the Resurrection Remix Dialer, and works pretty well. But I had to keep the MiFavor dialer, because it manages the contacts.
Any of the google apps, toolkit, and all its apps, touchpal keyboard and all its supporting files. All frozen for week, then removed after no problems.
So far:
Android live wallpaper, Ant Hal,ZTE Calculator, cloud print, zte email, play movies, hangouts, keep, live wallpaper picker, zte sms, sheets, slides, toolkit, zte locker all frozen with no issues
I'm fighting to fully remove ZTE Locker. reV17 pointed me to something else that has to be removed called huahualock. I found one file that was named like that, but it seemed to be some type of backup file.
Is there any app I can use to freeze apps if I am not rooted? Sort of like package disabler for Samsung phones?
You can freeze apps from miassistant.
Go into apps manager and freeze apps

Yes I know but not all apps can be freezed through miassistant.
Name says it all. Need inputs from owners of this device if Asus apps meant for other ZenFones work on this ROM without any porting? May need to download using Yalp store, since the play store may not permit such download with the disclaimer "this app is incompatible with your device" (sheesh!).
Basically hate Google integration and want to develop a noGapps Stock ROM, without Google apps and, possibly with Asus app alternatives (dialer, calendar, camera, clock, weather, etc)
I think ZenApps can't be porting here.
But maybe yes.
I'm own this device, running pure Android 8.1 without ZenApps. So, if you want Zen UI + ZenApps get other Zenfone device's, if you want pure Android Apps (Google) get it. Greetings

Most of the Asus Zenfone ZenUI apps are available on Google Play Store and you can download it from there. And in case you desperately need any app that is not listed on GPS then you can extract that apk from any Asus Zenfone stock ROM.
Can anybody post the links of playstore apps of ZenUi?
I need the launcher, dialer, contacts and messaging?
Could not find them in playstore

Some ZenUI apps actually depend on proprietary blobs that might or might not be compatible with this phone, and probably don't ship with the stock ROM.

Seems true. I have downloaded the following apk form apk mirror and installed them.
Zen launcher .. this is mainly for custom sorting of apps and creating folders which are not available in stock launcher.
Dialer and contacts
Quick memo
Clock
Weather
Sound Recorder
Calendar
Calculator and FM radio are already preloaded in the phone.
Everything installed without any errors. The following are the results.
Calendar always crashed and never worked.
Dialer and contacts did not crash but just not working. Nothing happens if i dial a number from the dial pad or call a number from the contacts list. Except these two the other zenui apps installed are perfectly working fine including the launcher.
Can anybody help me get t work the dialer and contacts please? I do not like the stock dialer and contacts apps.

Asus Mobile manager app doesn't work, everything is blocked on the manager app, no function loads. Doesn't support this mobile series/model, it's not compatible.
How I know? Bcoz I tried
Is there any way to install these apps into stock android by extracting the required zenui apps from zenfone 5 rom ,
I am installing ZenUI Launcher, Gallery and PixelMaster camera and it's working fine.

I tested it and the camera did not work. I'm using the "open camera" app right now.
Would it be that if I take the stock room zenfone 5 it works?
I just wanted to zenUI on my max pro m1
I really hope this phone gets rooted and perhaps a ROM. I came from the OnePlus 7 Pro and yikes! The stock s20 says it has 520 apps installed, which includes my usual apps. My OnePlus 7 Pro has my identical apps installed, and it is under 150 for system and user apps.
The phone is crazy fast, but it would be ridiculous with a semi-stock Android.

You can uninstall the apps with ADB.
https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/
Here is how to do it without root access, maybe Samsung and OnePlus count differently?
Disabled apps
You can use adb or if you are lazy like me, you can buy a package disabler for 3€.
The apps I disabled are in the attach. You can disable more for better battery, but I still want the Samsung experience.
Maybe someone can suggest more apps that can be disabled without touching the Samsung experience.
I recommend using CCSWE App Manager rather than deleting via adb. You get the same effect, but if you need to restore an app/service, all you have to do is toggle a button, which is much more convenient than using adb.

Hi,
Do you happen to have a list of what you disabled using CCSWE that's safe
and/or not needed for a smooth setup. CCSWE has color coded system files
in red, are these safe to disable????

All system files are potentially dangerous to disable/uninstall.
I disabled the following with no issues whatsoever:
Bixby routines
Bixby voice
Bixby voice stub
Briefing
(Samsung) Calendar
(Samsung) Contacts
Facebook
Facebook app installer
Facebook app manager
Facebook services
Game launcher
(Samsung) Launcher
Messages
Netflix
Samsung Daily
Samsung Galaxy friends
Samsung Internet
Smasung Internet panel
SmartThings
Voice wake-up
Obviously, if you use any of those apps/services, then don't disable them. I use Google Calendar & Google Contacts, so the Samsung versions are unnecessary. And I use Pulse SMS, so no need for Messages app.
