I'm currently owning a Nook Color. I wanted it for reading books, reading pdfs (I can't find a lagfree Android pdf Reader!), browsing web and playing around.
I'm not happy with it. I'm from Germany, I payed about 300€ all in all for it with taxes and shipping costs.
I simply miss that I can't get any accessoires for it, that I don't have mobile Internet and the touchscreen makes problems.
I don't have a cellphone currently, I'm thinking about getting a case that let's me use my iPod as cellphone. But somehow I'd rather have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, because I don't like it to have a device that wasn't ment to be an tablet and really is not a good tablet and together with the case for the iPod (70€) the SGT isn't a lot more expensive.
I think that I would still get about 200-250€ for my NC. I saw the Samsung Galaxy Tab for 350-400€on ebay.de.
What do you Samsung Galaxy Tab owners think, should I sell my NC to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab or should I stick with it?
PS: can one actually connect the tab to a TV with a video cable?
Well, I think you will get a lot more with the Galaxy Tab.
Overall I find it very usable and I enjoy it. Files in PDF can be read using Adobe reader and many others. I got Documents to Go and it gives me ability to read and edit MS format documents as well.
The Tab has everything that regular laptop has, plus GPS, compass, and cellular phone. You can get maps and navigation any time your need. GPS works better than on any phone because of the better antenna. Signal to noise ratio is more than 10 times higher. It should be noted that it supports Wifi at 5GHz in addition to 2.4GHz.
You can also make and receive phone calls while listening music through Bluetooth.
Overall Nook has a small fraction of the Tab's functionality.
Connecting the Tab to TV requires HDMI multimedia dock and HDMI cable with a small form factor connector on the dock side. You can also use Wifi streaming.
I would definitely vote for the Tab.
I'm in the DC area, i'm selling my galaxy tab for $350
Hi Diemex,
I use my galaxy tab in exactly the way you describe, I'm a postgrad student so I read ALOT of pdf files on my tab using Repligo to add comments to them and dropbox to sync with my desktop. I use Miren browser for 90% of my home web browsing and pulse reader for getting the news at Uni.
The tab is really stable on the modaco rom, but development isn't as fast as the NC, sometimes I wish there was more development, then I remind myself that functionality wise the tab has all the bases covered. When better kit comes along that the devs favour I will upgrade once the price falls. Until then the tab ticks all the boxes for me.
Edit: I'm waiting for an RCA cable to.arrive so that I can plug it into a T.V. via a scart adaptor.
The Tab is a good step up from the NC.
The rca cables are cool and allow me to stream movies and play games via the tab.
Protected movies like ones from the samsung movie site do not play through though

I am in the area too and wanted to get a T-Mobile one... And ended up paying a pretty penny.
To respond to thre OP--the size and hardware are its best attributes.
The software is a total nightmare. It is slow, no updates in sight, missed key presses ... I am annoyed. I am not even trying to do anything complicated with it! No rooting, no cooked roms, just stock device.
It's like they are pushing crap and once they sell the stock they move on to other versions.
Save your money. Samsung built this thing well but it is half-baked and the developent on it has just fizzled out on this site. I have very limited skills or I would be porting and helping.
Oh, the Nook Color thing. KEEP IT. It is much better quality and the development for it is still rockin. Hello, it has a Honeycomb port. The Tab is nowhere near that and again, devs have moved on it seems.

I didn't look to bad to me.
I did all the rooting, overclocking stuff with my NC and it simply didnt make the device better.

I also thought that that is a big plus. But it doesnt compensate for it lacking a lot of hardware. And the quality of it is definetely not better than the SGT. The case is creacky and I'm getting frequent qhost taps and times when the display isnt working at all.

Great a Honeycomb port, have you ever tried that port out? It's completely useless. I've been changing firmwares and kernels and all that stuff for the last 2 weeks and still ended up with froyo being the best.
I take my NC with me everywhere nearly, but it just has not enough functionality, and I'm thinking of leaving it simply at home to read books.
Personally, I am totally in love with my SGT. I have rooted and have overcome ROM 1.2.1 with the new overcome 2.0.1 kernel, and it is just awesome Although I liked it beforehand, and it was certainly well usable, the ROM/kernel made it a lot better.
I take mine absolutely everywhere, and it does everything for me.
Yeah, I have seen some of those Honeycomb ports, not the nook one but other SDK ports on other devices.... to be honest, personally, I would rather wait for the source to be released and a proper port to be done. These SDK "Ports" are just horrible. (Not trying to hijack at all, but really guys? You all really want a nearly totally non-functional port? First thing everyone will do is ***** that things don't work, but I digress)
In the meantime, my tab works Great I would definitely recommend one, especially if you like the portability a 7" device offers. From what I understand the screen is similar to, if not better than, the NC for book reading, and that is one thing my tab is used for a lot.
It is also my phone, portable media player (plays pretty much every format I've thrown at it, and plays 720p and 1080p stuff quite smooth, obviously scaled down for the screen res but still), portable Internet, and all round mate impresser
I don't think that there will be any affordable 7 inch tablet coming out this year (for me^^).
Also if they have better hardware and stuff like that - it would be simply like putting a porsche motor in a opel corsa (or some other car).
The companies try to make the customers believe that when one has a device with a better/great hardware, that one can automatically do more with it, or that it runs better.
With all the great tablet-apps that support dualcore processors that will definetely be the case this year. (sarcasm).
I can't think of a better 7'inch tablet for this prize (~350€)
At this time I can see only one future contender in the same 7inch category: HTC Flyer.
It promises scripting capability using bluetooth stylus that might be very useful.
I had a quite a few Palms and used scripting a lot. Also I had two HTC Android phones and built quality was very good.
the only thing that makes it better is that "magical" pen, but it's going to be 699$ and it's not out yet.

Actually i'd say that the fact that HTC have stated that it will get Honeycomb is more interesting than the "pen" IMO.

SGT will also get honeycomb, if not from samsung, then definetely from the devs or hackers.
I've got both and the tab is definatly a better choice.
@op by reading your remarks I can tell you are a pretty smary consumer. go with your inner voice and get the tab.
Unless ofcourse you just want to wait and see what coming but I doubt it will be much different in the near future.
Galaxy Tabs.....Worth every penny!!
Just picked up a SGT from VZW for $170 w/2yr contract.

Nice,
Just went back to stock,
pdfviewing works great and fluent, I think stock is the best choice for standard consumer.
But still I'm quite sure that I'm going to buy the tab, it's going to last longer, or I think I will use it longer.
I looked at it at a local Shop,
put in my sdcard with apk's and pdfs, I was just messing around, trying out everything, the tab could even open my 350mb 250 pages fallout 3 game guide, nook takes for ever to load it.
It simply looked like the perfect all in one device that I was actually looking for, somehow got the Nook to try the tablet thing out, now it's time to upgrade my tablet.

I just need to learn to be more patient.

Hi,
I'm thinking about buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet, because of the stylus panel.
But just saw this Benchmark and now I don't know if it's real?!
Is it possible to have that bad benchmarks with a tegra 3 cpu?
The HTC Flyer is the only option, but it's only 7". Maybe a Asus Transformer Prime without stylus would be the better choice or even the Transformer?!
The Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25I4hXp8CEg
Do you know other benchmark tests? What do you think?
Thanks in advance!
prereleased , buggy and unoptimised software is my guess

It is only Tegra 2. You should check out these two forums.

I think the reason to get this tablet is not the benchmarks but the ability to use a stylus. If you want better performance I would wait for them to update it.

Thanks for the links these forums look good. Still don't understand why xda has no thinkpad forum. So there will be no ROMs or other developing here?
That would be a big point against lenovo for me! Who knows what you could do with a digitizer...
I've read a lot reviews and stuff, now. If you are interested in a good tablet like the transformer prime, but with digitizer I would suggest to wait for the next HTC releases with Scribe, ICS, unibody and 10"+ If you can't wait - GET IT!
Moved to questions
Actually, over at Laptop mag they did an extensive benchmark of the Thinkpad against a few others and to me it seem to be quite fine.
I've been on the fence between the Thinkpad, The Toshiba Thrive and the original Transformer and so far I am still leaning towards the Thinkpad.
Now if one is to compare it benchmark wise to the Transformer Prime, then there is no contest.
edit: Thanks admins/mods for creating the Thinkpad forum.
TS
To me raw benchmarks mean absolutely nothing. It's all about real life performance. And for my needs the Tablet works just fine.
I agree, and your recent real life review shows that very well.
TS
it's all about business
You must understand, the ThinkpadTablet is a business model. I here people arguing all the time why to buy this instead of a SGTAB. It does not even come with youtube preinstalled ( mine didn't ) so if your looking for video playing and Angry Birds you're wasting your money. I'm not saying it's not capable, it's fully capable but you're wasting it's potential. I tried most of the tablets and none raise to this. I even own an iPad 2... but it's all about multimedia and 1000 gb of games on that. I find the Thinkpad business apps and secure connections to be the best. It can connect to VPN encryption like not other. The pen is also superb. Great battery and connectivity. Robust with a great Keyboard-Folio Case. The OS is stable but i would have liked a Custom ROM. Still if they update to ICS it will be perfect.
Really a hidden jewel among the others, but only if you use it for the above purposes. Otherwise buy a SgTab and than buy a pen and you'll like it more.
+1. It's a workhorse, and a superb one.

Hey,
Recently i've bought a Thinkpad Tablet. And i'm using GTB 10.1 p7500.
Maybe in not distant future, i'll make a comparison of those two. But for now, my GTB is going to be sold. Lenovo is much better. Not in every wy, but the way i'm using it...
Don't buy
I am generally disappointed with this tablet. While I was writing this reply I had to reboot. FC all the time, it lags way too much (Flash, launcher, writing this comment and scrolling up and down a web page)
But it boot up very fast!
Hello again.
After month of using TPT, here is some summary:
for:
- wide range of inputs (hdmi, usb, sdcard)
- stylus
- external keyboard with pin pointer
- very natural colors
- stability
- most of the unneeded apps can be uninstalled
- outstanding rubber-like cover
- very good for watching movies on my big screen, via hdmi
against:
- battery (i have to charge it every day - GTB once every two or three days)
- lack of rooting procedure
- BT 2.1 (GTB BT 3.0), very sluggish
- nobody knows how to root this thing
- sensitivity of the screen (GTB is far more sensitive)
- did i mention rooting problems ?
For now i can say, tha this is very good tablet. But if you want to use it as it is. If you like to personalize everything, if you need root or something like that, wait or buy something else...
For me ideal would be tab like GTB but with docking bay/docking station with all the features that TPT have.
I took that Keyboard Folio docking section apart and truth be told, Lenovo could have changed the setup to allow an additional USB port in that area.
TS
you dont take your work truck to an engine dyno or a drag race - you get it to work... are you really going to look at benchmark?
you get this tablet for the computrace, one of the best warranty in the service, some free app bundle, a pen (and a place to put it), ips display, hdmi out, full size USB that works with a number of devices, and a tablet that doesnt look like a toy or a device meant for female audiences
Aw, hell. I guess that means it'll never come in pink. Is it too butch? Would I look to dorky changing out my hair doodads in its reflection (when it's off, of course. Or should I buy one of the Mirror apps when I go pickup my blinker fluid?)
Seriously. If I get one of these, should I only take it out when I have my Chuck Taylors or Birkenstocks on?
What do you guys think, should i go with a note like i was planning too or get this laptop?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310625
theres pros and cons to both but i just cant decide x .x
I have a wacom pad already on my desktop and is the reason i like the GNote
I have tons of games for both android and windows and either one would be able to play all the ones i have for either OS. The laptop will be able to run my adobe suite though and the GNote wont.
What do you guys think? stick with my GNote plan or might i be short changing myself in the productivity department?
Are you planning to replace your desktop with it? The note is definitely not a desktop replacement (no proper adobe suite etc, apps still have a bit of a way to go but are getting much better) but as for laptops... nowadays i hardly ever use my laptops unless i want to do a lot of typing. if you want the note as a side sketchpad or to do work up to a certain extent then it's a fantastic tool... the only thing similar is a tablet pc and those are $$$ and comparatively horrible for battery life so.
Personally i use my desktop anytime i need to get big things done fast but use the note 10 for quick sketches, small pieces and to draw on the go, or while sitting on my couch. Then i usually add the last few touches on my desktop.
Hope that helps.

Think I'm gonna stick with the plan of getting the note. The power of the laptop would be nice but I think the portability of the note out weighs the potential benefits of the laptop. I can also save about 100$ getting the note xP

Note all the way mate. Was in a similar situation last year. Bought a laptop in the end, because I just couldn't see how the note would do what I wanted it to. Then I got a note a few weeks after and tbh the laptop is just sitting gathering dust.
For drawing I use either sketchbook pro (note version) or infinite painter pro and when combined with photoshop touch (which comes with the note) you get a hell of a lot of productivity on your hands, rarely needed to use the desktop. You will be amazed at just what you can achieve, well i have been anyway. Only package I'm really missing is a proper animation one. But I'm sure with time that will come and if not, theres the trusty ol PC in the corner.
I might be able to help, seeing as I had the same decision to make a handful of months ago, It really depends on the type of art your trying to make. I'm an illustrator that recently bought a Note 10.1 to do some sketching on the go. I use my Note to start the sketching stage of an illustration.I would not be able able to complete an entire illustration on the Note. It can't handle large files with a lot of layers(80mb). I normally use Photoshop and on the tablet I would be missing too many tools that I normally use. Only a handful of Android apps can open a pre-exiting .psd files with layers intact. Plus the screen is to small. My desktop setup is a triple 28" monitor setup with an Extra Large Intous4 tablet and 2 x-keys.
I used to use a laptop with an extra wacom, but unless your planning on sitting still for extended periods of time its not practical. It take as while get going each time and pack up. With the Note I'm able to use it while walking. The perfect example is shopping with my woman. While I'm waiting for her to move to the next store I can sit in the corner and sketch. This would not be practical with a laptop.
Even if that was not a issue, most laptop have a screens that have bad color shift when you move your head from side to side. I have messed up an illustration that I was working on because of this. Also the battery life on my laptop with constant use is a little over 2hrs. which is terrible.
Another option was to get one of new tablet pc's (slate) or new windows 8 pro tablets. I didn't go that route because of price. I don't want to be lugging around a 1000+ piece of tech around. Because I dismissed this as an option I didn't use any of these product hands on, so I don't know if there are any issues. There are some videos on youtube.
I mainly use PS Touch and LayerPaint. They work best with my work flow. I would only use PS Touch If it could open .psd files.
The android apps the the other poster mentioned are also the ones that I recommend. I would also like to add Layerpaint to the list. It's one of the few apps that can open .psd files with layers intact(PS Touch can not, it flatten the image).
If you want the natural media look I would go with Infinite Pro or Sketchbook Pro.
I your just using it for light sketching the think the Note 10.1 would be better. I you want to do completed work you might want to look into the new windows 8 pro tablets.

no problem, as the other posters here have commented I totally agree with them, laptop + wacom = sucky. a tablet PC would be better... but I had tablet pcs, didn't like the weight + heat + noise + battery life and the digitizer is exactly the same. having the tablet pc would not be worth the doubled price IMHO unless you plan to be doing full work while you're travelling a lot? also, the new slate screens are not much bigger than the note, and usually stretched in a weird long portrait dimension it seems...
pretty sure you'll love using the note as a mini-cintiq (eg. i have a 20 inch cintiq on my workstation but i often just use my note instead cause it's so easy to whip out /turn on/ take anywhere)
I have been using Clover Paint on my note (cannot open psds or transform yet (in development) but i've found it great to work with once it's all set-up the way you want)

i was considering won 8 pro tabs but looking at the price and the fact that i tend to work in alot of layers the atom processors would take a dumper in my case. I usually work in large dpi/res images with many layers which my desktop is perfect for. I'm wanting something with protability and the power to do alot of the desktop stuff but i suppose ill have to make a bit of sacrifice which is ok, the note will be a good way to start my images with sketches and such and i can do the painting and effects on my desktop

no problem, as the other posters here have commented I totally agree with them, laptop + wacom = sucky. a tablet PC would be better... but I had tablet pcs, didn't like the weight + heat + noise + battery life and the digitizer is exactly the same. having the tablet pc would not be worth the doubled price IMHO unless you plan to be doing full work while you're travelling a lot? also, the new slate screens are not much bigger than the note, and usually stretched in a weird long portrait dimension it seems...
pretty sure you'll love using the note as a mini-cintiq (eg. i have a 20 inch cintiq on my workstation but i often just use my note instead cause it's so easy to whip out /turn on/ take anywhere)
I have been using Clover Paint on my note (cannot open psds or transform yet (in development) but i've found it great to work with once it's all set-up the way you want)

i wish i had $ for a 20" cintiq T^T ill have to save because thats the one thing i dont like about my tab on my desktop right now is i feel sorta disconnected from my work. Its also why i was looking at the note as a sketchbook/media device so it looks like im making a good decision skipping the laptop for now. I really like using Sketchbook Mobile on my GNex so i will only like Sketchbook Pro better on my Note im sure
ty guys for helping me decide, and for anyone else trying to decide we can point them here cause you guys gave some good advice

now in layer paint is it just me or does it not support multiply layers? :3

i was considering won 8 pro tabs but looking at the price and the fact that i tend to work in alot of layers the atom processors would take a dumper in my case.

I guess it kind of depends on how much you're willing to spend. The more you would want to do on the go, the more you'll have to spend. The Note 10.1 will not exactly handle more than an Atom-based x86 Win8 tablet either. The difference is that because you're running Android, you're not gonna have apps that will overload the processor (aka you can't shoot yourself in the foot). But, one of the major benefits of having Win8 is being able to run desktop class software. It may not be able to handle Photoshop, but it can probably handle the likes of Sketchbook Pro, Artrage, and Paint Tool Sai.. and the desktop versions of these apps will probably be more powerful than their mobile counterpart (not sure if Sai has a tablet version out there).
That being said, I have the Note and an i3 Lenovo laptop w/ an Intuos/22" monitor.. and between these two I'm perfectly satisfied. If you add the multiwindow mod (multiwindow for any app) for the Note, then you'll almost have a desktop like experience on the go.
I think it was already mentioned, but the main advantage of the Note over the Laptop+WacomTablet is the portability. Since it sounds like you're going to use your desktop for more careful work anyway, you probably will get more out of the Note's portability. By the way, how is TVPaint in terms of its usage, relative to desktop class software?

Yea, my budget is about 500$, so 1000$+ win8 tabs with decent processors won't be an option. Ik the note won't handle more, its just like you pointed out that android apps are lighter. I've use Sketchbook mobile and its for the most part the same as the desktop version. I think from the comments here I'm not gonna regret getting the note c:

I remember seeing your colours on the paint/sketch thread here, nice work!
anyway, the cintiq I bought secondhand off ebay and it was probably the best working investment ever though the $$$ did hurt somewhat. it was 1200 used, ended up 1600 ish with shipping/tax. would have been cheaper if I didn't live in Canada you can get pretty good deals if you don't mind shopping around on ebay/craigs etc.it speeds up my workflow at least 30%.
I also see people raving about the yiynova now which is 500 bucks or something? http://frenden.tumblr.com/post/38693256477/yiynovamsp19u

there's an open beta that you can sign up for, it is actually THE desktop software ported onto android so it's fully functional afaik and very powerful. but god knows how much they will end up pricing it at.

The first time I ever saw an iPad in person, I began to lust for one. Then, I bought my son an iPod Touch and we grew to despise iOS. So when I upgraded my old "feature phone" to a smart phone, I went Android. I loved it and never looked back. My first phone was a Samsung Captivate. When we switched from AT&T to Verizon, I got the Galaxy S3 (which I still have, but I'm suffering from S4 envy now!).
My first tablet was the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. I loved that tablet. After a couple years, I decided it was time for an upgrade and went with the Asus Transformer Infinity, mainly for the hardware keyboard (with extended battery, full size USB port, SD card reader, etc). What a piece of $#!+ that thing is! The keyboard will not stay attached to the tablet when folded shut. Physically, it feels flimsy and cheap. The battery life - even with the "extended" battery - was worse than my old Galaxy Tab. The thing was incredibly sluggish, slow, and crashed a lot. I tried several custom ROMs and that made things a *tad* better, but not really. Using it was an exercise in frustration.
So, I just picked up the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. I LOVE this tablet! Very high quality build. It feels good and solid in my hands. The thing is FAST and performance (based on my user experience) is amazing! The S-Pen is fantastic and I love using it! (I just wish it worked on my S3!). I feel comfortable and at ease with a tablet again. No frustration at all anymore! This is everything a tablet should be! Even if I never install a custom ROM on it, I think I would still be extremely happy with it!
My only desire now is for Samsung to hurry up and release the Book Cover case for it.

Congrats. This is my first tablet I have ever owned, although a few people in my family own one. Because I started school again, most of my books are in PDF form and I started taking notes with the Note 2014. Taking notes has been really good, very easy to erase things and move equations around to other pages.
I'm very happy with this device and I'm finding new ways to integrate it into my life as the days go by.
The display is key, but the hardware needs to support it to avoid a laggy experience. This is why the Asus 700 and Nook HD+ suffer and is why I got the iPad 4.
The 2014 seems to be the first Android tablet to cover all bases without some significant caveat. Catch is the price. The pen function adds expense and I get why folks that need the function love it. I will not use it, so will wait for a price drop. Would have waited for the A701, but have read enough and seen enough issues with the Shield and Toshiba tablets to stay away.
The 2014 covers all the bases and has a key thing (sd slot) that I need.

When you do use the pen though, the price becomes worth it. The level of software they had to program into using the pen makes it worth it if you definitely need it.
But if you don't use it, then I guess you'll have to wait for the Galaxy Tab 4.

I have a large number of pdf books including numerous Adobe DRM protected books. I highly recommend Mantano reader from the play store. I have tge oremium version but there is bith avlight and standard version.
The premium version adds so much functionality it is insane. All highlights, nites and bookmarks you have made are visible together on an index page fir each b9ok so you can easily find everyvnote you have made on a book or every highlight.

That's an awesome feature! I'm waiting for my Note and plan to use LectureNotes in class. While thinking about my workflow with it I thought that this 'indexing highliter' would be a really awesome feature. Does anybody know if LectureNotes has this functionality as well?
I'm not a mobile device guru or anything, but I have used a pretty decent variety of devices. My last two laptops were "convertibles" (the monitor flips around and folds over the keyboard to become a tablet). Currently a Dell XT3, previously a Fujitsu Lifebook. I delved into the "UMPC" world. I had a Samsung Q1 for a while and also thoroughly tested the Black Diamond Switchback, OQO Model 2, and others for my previous job.
The S-Pen is not a mere stylus like what came with all the other devices I've used. One of my favorite features is the ability to toggle it so the touch screen does not recognize my hand. I can finally rest my hand on the display while using the pen without weird things happening. It's a small thing, but really big for me.

Thanks for letting me know. It's probably no big deal, I haven't figured out my workflow yet anyway. But could you imagine implementing this somewhere down the road?
The scenario that I have in mind is the following: Whenever there is a definition in my lecture slides (currently in paper form), I highlight the name of what's being defined with a specific marker color. That way I can easily skim through my notes when I'm looking for a certain definition. Switching to the Note/LectureNotes, I thought it'd be really cool if all my highlighted definitions would show up on one central page as bookmarks/links, making it even easier to find what I'm looking for.
Anyway, I should probably not be making feature requests before ever really having used the app.
Thanks for being such a responsive developer!
@The_Maverick: LectureNotes allows to attach keywords to notebook pages and creates a table of contents and an index from that (either for individual notebooks, for all notebooks in a folder, and for all notebooks on the notebooks board). This is the second part of the suggested functionality, the first part where highlighted material becomes a keyword is missing, you need to type the keyword manually.

Cool. Thanks for the help. I'm definitely looking forward to using LectureNotes. It's the biggest incentive for me to get the Note.
I mainly bought this for the great screen, multitasking, and the SD Card slot...but I must say that I have been surprisingly happy with the S-pen and all the functionality it brings! I wish I would have had this while in college.
I also wish the S-pen would work with my S3. The Note phones are all too big for me, so we'll see what the S5 will bring. I highly doubt it, but it'd be awesome if the S5 could use the S-pen too (even if it didn't come with one).
I used to think the Notes were too big, but after using one for awhile it seems rather normal. I think because they slimmed down the 3 a bit it's not bad.

LectureNotes is much more customizable. It's quite possibly the most perfect note taking app that exists anywhere, including Windows, Android, or iOS.
The ONLY thing I wish it had is the ability to add an expandable sticky note to either notes or PDF's I'm annotating.
@han solo
and maybe it would be great if the Lecture Notes UI would move somewhere near the Android HOLO conventions... been using Lecture Notes for a long time now and I still keep forgetting where which menu item is hiding.
Otherwise, good app.
@Ulukaii1983: I try to keep functionality organized in a meaningful way, but I am always open for specific suggestions (in fact, I have moved several menu items following user suggestions).

I'm looking for a new tablet and the yoga book still looks like a good unit.
I can't see any sign of a new version coming out (new colours have been announced but same internals).
My question is - is this still a worthy piece of kit in September 2017 ? Ideally I was looking at the windows unit but the "screen off notetaking" in the android version looks useful and I'm android/Google in most other aspects of my life.
I won't be a heavy user - mostly web browsing etc. Certainly no PC gaming expectations.
Opinions appreciated

In your use-case, it seems like it will still be a great device, depending on the price.
I'm still using mine as an office device for some light tasks like Word and Powerpoint presentations (I'm using an Android version, by the way ), emails and spreadsheet reports in a pinch. I work out in the field, and I have come to rely on it a bit more than my laptop as it's easier to carry around and the battery lasts longer..

Most of the time, if it's productivity you're after, Windows wins. In this case, however, the Android version seems like a better choice as it has a lot more App support for native touchscreen functionality, and the environment, as it is still a tablet IMO, an Android version is a lot better than a Windows one.
Add to that the price point, and you've got a winner!
Be aware, though, that there isn't much of an Android development path coming from the community. Also, Lenovo seems to have neglected the development of this device internally, so it seems we won't get updates anymore. If those things are going to factors, then stay away from this device. lol

I could be wrong, but..
I haven't got OTA updates even for security, but it could be just an isolated case.
But in the case of the OP, since he's just getting his tablet, the support he'll be getting will not be as long as the support we've had who bought earlier than him.

I am hopeful that they haven't been bothering to release security updates because they have been hard at work on Nougat! Who knows...
@wilbur-force , I would recommend waiting a month and seeing if the Nougat update comes out.
Even without the update, I think this is a pretty great tablet if you plan on using the note taking capabilities. I use mine every day for note taking in lectures and working on assignments while on campus. It is a feather compared to my laptop and I find that I can leave my laptop at home 90% of the time. However, it could definitely benefit from some of the enhancements of Nougat; namely better split screen capabilities.
If you mostly just plan on surfing the web (ie, extensive keyboard use and minimal stylus use) I would recommend getting something with an actual keyboard. While the Halo keyboard is certainly better than an on screen keyboard, it is an order of magnitude less effective than a physical keyboard. I actually purchased a small bluetooth keyboard, both so that I wouldn't have to use the Halo, but also so that I can seamlessly go from taking notes with the stylus (great for equations and figures) to typing.
When paired with a bluetooth keyboard, this tablet is a perfect for anyone who plans to get a lot of use out of a stylus. However, I wouldn't want to compose more than a few short sentences with the Halo keyboard.

Well you apparently made something wrong as mine works more than perfectly...
I would never buy an Android Tablet in this price range as it is more than common through all Manufacturers they stop developing/support after a while... The Yoga Book has a too specific Hardware to expect any Custom Roms... Windows wins here clearly through permanent updates...
And the possibilities on Windows are simply endless ampler... You can even use BlueStacks with decent speed to use that very specific Android App...

It depends on the use case. I still consider it a tablet more than anything, and an Android tablet is better than a Windows one in terms of tab-specific apps (functionality, ease of use / ux and the graphics are scaled correctly)
I bought and Android yogabook 6 weeks ago and am very happy with it. I have just installed the OTA Nougat update. I had issues that required me to reformat my SD card otherwise it got stuck in a boot loop, but all is OK now
I just bought the Android version on sale a week ago. I must say that I'm very impressed because of it's versatility and portability. I think the must have apps for this tablet are from myscript. They are the myscript stylus input method and the myscript nebo preview (which must be sideloaded via an apk).
What makes myscript stylus better than, say, google handwriting input is that Stylus allows you to use the digitizer. With google's version, you can only use the screen and the digitizer does not respond to input. What's the benefit of this app? Well, if you are in pen mode in the Artrage app doing a drawing, and you switch to any other app which requires the keyboard, you don't have to put the pen down and start typing. It will stay in pen mode and instead of the popup keyboard, it will popup a text line for you to write in. It will recognize handwriting, printing, and gestures. So basically, if you're comfortable with writing on a pen more than typing on the keyboard, or you don't want to switch modes when you switch apps, then this app is a must. I usually have the yogabook in 30/70 splitscreen laptop mode. One side a messaging app, the other side a notetaking app. I can switch between the two and do all my inputs with the pen on the exact same surface (the digitizer).
Myscript nebo is a great notetaking app simply because it allows you to convert your handwriting into text as if you typed it using a keyboard. It also converts your hand drawn flowcharts into Visio like flowcharts with connectors that stick. Hand drawn math equations also get converted and calculated (depending on complexity).
These two apps alone make the yogabook much more useful for me since I like using the pen vs the keyboard.
Just got the yoga book yesterday, mainly because it's just pretty unique and the 'writing notes on the keyboard' thing just pulled on me. Had tablets in the past, and now also a hp x360 (so with touchscreen) but writing on the display always had it's quirks. This solution by yoga just works pretty great, loving it so far.
It's also still very sleek and has a nice design, so no regrets so far. But I think that if you want 'just a tablet' or somethin with a keyboard, you might want to look further as this is really pointed towards the note taking and writing imo.
Hi all, I am also considering getting a Yoga Book even though we are in 2018 already. Lenovo doesn't appear to be coming out with a follow-up device, and I can see some pretty interesting prices for it.
I have a question about the stylus use though, and I have not seen or tried an actual device yet, so I will ask here. I assume you can takes notes with the stylus either on the "slab" where the keyboard is, but also directly on the screen, as in a notepad, if you swivel the slab to make it a true tablet mode. Is that correct?
To take notes with the stylus I would assume that it feels more natural to write directly on the screen and see the "ink" drawn directly where the stylus is.
I currently use a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition). It's 4 years old but I still absolutely love it, and I use it extensively to take notes, and it has replaced my paper notebook completely. It is however showing signs of age and the screen is starting to have defective spots where the stylus doesn't work. So, I need to replace it, and the Yoga Book looks like an interesting step up, even considering its age. Would it be a god choice?
I think the My Galaxy Note still has a better screen and split windows support than the Yoga Book, but at the prices I have seen the Yoga Book, it might be a good deal. I am not overly concerned about Android level upgrades, as my Galaxy Note is still at Android 5.1.1 and it works great.
Thanks!

Thanks!

You can technically write on the screen but the tracking and lag are awful. I'd only use the pen on the screen for underlining and even then you would probably still be better off using the wacom pad
I've just got one myself and I think it's great tool for students, highly portable, easy to take notes on.
I'm not sure whenever it's worth the risk of updating to nougat, but even on Android 6 I like it's functionality.
There is some delicate lag with pen when using in OneNote though.

My note had some internal malfunction, like force-closing apps and i was unable to fix it. I got the YB last week and it kinda feels like the SMP-601 was a more powerful tablet, the art rage app seems a bit laggy compared with the drawing app in the note 2014, i may be wrong and require more testing also the pen that comes with it is not what i would call suitable for the screen as the note 2014 was(that pen was awesome) and on top of that you do not have a native app to take notes in content that is on the screen, like when you are reading a text and wanna save a little paragraph for latter like the air commander app. The battery life seems worse too, the note 2014 could be left alone in a table for about a week and still have some juice left on the battery. There's a new Samsung tab S3 seems a worthy replacement (Even with Samsung awful software updates), but it is jesus christ expensive and thus it kinda can't compete with YB price range and cost benefit.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I kind of get the same feeling and I'm not sure the Yoga Book is a suitable replacement. Even though my Note 2014 is 4 years old, it is still my workhorse.
I like the Tab S3 but I am upset that they didn't keep the S pen small and in a slot in the unit, just so they could make it thinner.
I have to be able to use it as a true notebook replacement and take notes on screen. I use OneNote extensively because I can also sync and work with them on my desktop later.

You can kinda use it like a Hybrid Between Tablet and a Netbook. I'm having my first experience using it in classes this week and it kinda works well. I rooted and removed all bloat, by doing that you can get an very lightweight 7.1 android experience which comes with an Microsoft office suite apps including the OneNote app. Typing in the halokeyboard is not bad as some people say it is. I think battery life might be manageable if you can put some GovTuner or something in it. Installing windows 10 is also an option. But if you have the money i would take a look on some reviews on the S3 or even an Ipad Pro. As the android tablet market shares apps with the smartphone market we are on a state that we are kinda lacking optimizations for tablets, i mean it makes the android tablets look exactly like a smartphone with a bigger screen, while on the IOS side we have apps that are really suited for tablet use.:fingers-crossed:
