What ROM to choose 2018 (samsung&google free) - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello,
as right now (mid march 2018) the AOSP ROMs for the s8 are not yet usable for a daily driver (no working ril so far) I'm looking for a good replacement.
I'm used to have rooted AOSP roms (RR, Lineage, etc.) without gapps. I don't like any of the samsung apps nor any of the modifications like the touch-wiz launcher/settings etc.
Question for me would which rom with root (without samsung & google) I should choose?
EDIT: Just another sum'up what I'm searching for:
Samsung (Apps/Services/Framework/Launcher/Settings) Free
Google (Apps/Services) Free
Rooted
Encryption

The only way I see here to achieve this is is to install one of the "google edition" custom roms and to remove the google apps you don't like yourself.

Thank's for your hint. I searched the ROM section and found this one here:
[CRB7]SpArTaXx'S RoM Ultra-Extra Deabloated [OREO][OFFICIAL]
It's kind like you said, replaces the samsung sh*t with google sh*t. I asked the developer if it is possible to install without google play services... let's see
And let's hope that AOSP will crash in soon :fingers-crossed:

since i have a Galay S4 but my rom is not from a galaxy S4, i get confused which one i have to install.
Some links to downloads would be great!
Thanks in advance

Hi mate
Basically it works in any android 4.0 + base rom device see from one of his threads
For which devices/ROMs does it work?
I develop the Xposed framework based on the AOSP sources. I'm personally using CM10.2 on an I9100 (Samsung Galaxy S2, bought in Germany). Basically, it should work on any phone which with a ROM based on Android 4.0 or later and an ARM or x86 processor (this is the processor architecture, almost all smart phones and tablets have either of those). Exceptions might be ROMs which are different from the original Android code in some very internal, central code parts (which don't need to be touched for most theming and enhancement modifications). But this is related to the ROM, not the phone itself.
The modules target higher-level code, so they are more likely to be incompatible with your ROM. Basically, the question is whether the methods and resources which the module modifies are similar on your ROM and on the developer's ROM. Let's say a module needs to modify the result of a certain method call. For this, it needs to specify the exact name and parameters that identify that method. If the in your ROM, an additional parameter has been added, the module can't find the method anymore and won't work. If the method can still be found, it will probably work (unless the rest of the app/ROM has changed too much).
There is not definite answer whether it will work. Just try it (of course, making a nandroid backup before is never a bad idea). If it doesn't work, just disable the module. You might want to inform the module developer (not me!) about this fact and provide details (e.g. a logcat and/or the content of /data/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/log/debug.log).
Try with latest 2.6.1

[Q] SM-N9108V (Chinese) Custom ROM options

Hello peoples!
First, allow me to kick myself for buying a Chinese phone. OUCH. There, moving on.
I have the Note 4 model SM-N9108V, Android v5.1.1, and it's been a complete nightmare to deal with it. (IT DOES NOT HAVE GOOGLE PLAY!) It seems this is the least common model out there on the internet. I have been able to find guides for all versions of the Note4, but for my version is very difficult.
After some brick scares, I was finally able to root my phone, install ClockworkMod Recovery and Open GApps. While it's "usable" now, some things still don't work. For example, The automatic Google Sync just does not work for some reason. I have to go on Settings and automatically click on everything to sync (calendar, contacts, etc).
So, I'm guessing my only option is to flash a custom ROM. But I can't find ROMs specifically for this device....
What are my options here? Can I install CyanogenMod made for the international version? Is there a Android 5/6 Stock ROM out there in the wild that I'm not aware of?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
TL ; DR Which custom ROMs are there for the SM-N9108V? Is there a Android 5/6 Stock ROM available? Can I install the CyanogenMod for another Note4 version?

Hello.
Allow me also to kick myself since i bought also this stupid version of Note 4. And imagine i exchange it with a S5. What a deal!
Anyway, there is a very nice MIUI ROM (xiaomi style) for this phone, see my post here where i collected all the posts explaining how to do it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66904680&postcount=2
Also you can root it and install also google play and everything is working fine.
Except the 3G and 4G! in my case they are not working well, i have drop calls, no data connection etc..
Can you tell me, do you operate the phone outside China? is it working ok on 3G?

Chinese galaxy note 4 gapps that work!!
Hi. It's been.a while since I've seen this post, looking for a solution for this phone. I finally got it working properly with all the Google apps.
After installing TWERP, I have tried many different gapps packages but always had the same result. Google apps crashing over and over again. I have finally found the right one and made my phone fully functional.
baNkS’s Dynamic*Gapps for Marshmallow*(279 MB)
This being my first ever post on this forum, I am bot allowed to post any outside links. But you should be able to Google it.
In the description, it says that the built-in script detects the chipset and installs the correct set.
Upon installation and restart, the Google services still crashed every couple of seconds but I was able to sign into my Google account. And, after an update, everything was fine.
I hope you find this useful, since it's an old post

{GIUDE} HYDROGEN OS 3.0 [Oneplus 3/3T] Installation/ Quick guide

An update to the H2OS out after a long time. The alternative ROM for the OnePlus devices is now updated to the version 3.0. The Hydrogen OS is mostly designed for the Chinese variants of the Oneplus devices. However, the H2OS 3.0 can also be installed on a regular or international variant of the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T. The ROM brings many new features.
As the Hydrogen OS is a firmware for the Chinese variant, it doesn’t come with the Google Apps pre-installed. You will need to install it separately. Fortunately, we already have a Google play store installed APK which can easily install the Google Play Services onto your Android device.

Will all the US bands be enabled with Hydrogen OS?
Hi, can anyone using a US OnePlus 3T confirm whether the US version of OnePlus 3T with Hydrogen OS will have the exact same bands enabled as the US version using Oxygen OS? I want to be as Google-free as possible and starting with a manufacturer-supported Google-free ROM like H2OS sounds like a good way to go.
I'm open to other ways to accomplish this but simpler is better for me. Finally moving away from Windows Phone, and yes I know, why would you want Android if you don't want Google? Answer, pathetically trying to cling to ownership of my personal data and can't afford the next best OEM privacy option, the iPhone (which isn't a great privacy option either). Thx!

I've been down this path too many times. It's doable but not easy. First, scrap H2OS since Playstore is preinstalled. I'd go with either a lineage based Rom or Freedom OS (OOS with the option to leave all google and OP Apps out on Installation). Just don't flash Gapps after the Rom.
But thats really the easy part. The hard part is the setup. First, you'd need to sideload at least a browser. Get the browser apk of your choice from a reputable source (xda labs is great. It even manages Updates for you). Depending on the apps you need, you'll need some playstore alternative. Some things can be had through xda-labs. If Open Source is your thing, f-droid is great too. Just don't download apk's from somewhere on the web. Your privacy might be more at risk than with google on it.
Also, get a vcard backup of your contacts (or run your own carddav server). Finally, some apps simply won't run without google framework (that's why it's back on my phone). For example "Bring", a shopping list, won't run without google framework. Don't ask me why. But i need that app. Just be prepared for some major inconveniences, and having to find workarounds... :good:
Thanks for the great input domsch1988. You've given me exactly the tips I need to get started. One question though. You mentioned Playstore is preinstalled on H2OS. I was under the impression the main difference between H2OS and OOS was H2OS's removal of all Google specific stuff to meet China's Google restrictions. I assumed that included Playstore. Are you sure it's in there? I only ask because I'd rather start with a OnePlus supported ROM if I can but if that's not the case I'll take the leap and go with one of the ROMs you suggest. Can you recommend a lineage-based ROM I can start with? And, do you have an opinion on microG as a Play framework replacement? It seems like a good idea in theory but the way it's implemented gives me some security concerns.

OP stated that PlayStore APK is preinstalled. I have not tried h2os, so can't say for sure. You could give it a try. And with root you can always uninstall system apps.
I never tried microg myself. For me it was always no g at all or the pico Gapps package.
As a lineage based ROM, on my note 4 resurrection remix was great. On the 3t I'm on stock oos, so not sure.
Play store or anything Google is not installed on H2OS
i am using it currently tried to go without play store and other apps for one day but couldn't deal with all the Chinese apps so, installed OOS although everything could have been installed on H2OS also.

Apps and OS suggestions?

Hi, and thanx for the chance to introduce myself. My name is Tom and I've only just realized that anyone can make modifications to their Android phone. I found XDA when I googled a search for how to jailbreak my Verizon Moto Z Play, I take it from reading posts that unlocking it is not possible yet. (Hopefully soon).
For now I am using an XT1607 Moto G4 Play which I bought with the SIM unlocked and I've also Unlocked the bootloader. I'm looking forward to developing my own apps,
but for now I'm wondering what modifications would be recommended for the Moto G4? I'm not familiar with the various firmware and software modifications and though I've found some apps to add, I would welcome suggestions for those as well.
Thanx, and Semper Fi to any of my USMC brothers

After unlocking your device, one of the first things you'd want to do is install a Custom Recovery like TWRP or CMD. I use TWRP. You can search four your device and download the correct file here: https://twrp.me/Devices/
This will allow you to create backups of your system, install Custom Roms (modified OS), give you root access and install modified apps, to name some things.
So once you installed a custom recovery, you might want to try a cusrom rom. They offer some great extra features. Just make sure to create a full backup (also called "nandroid") in TWRP before, just in case something goes wrong.
One of the most popular, stable and fluid ones is LineageOS: https://download.lineageos.org . It hasn't got so many extra features but works great!
An other good rom for what I've heared is InvictaOS. It's a bit more customizable than lineage and works great as well.
An other good thing to do is root your phone. You can achieve this by installing magisk's zip it TWRP, and then installing the Magisk Manager .apk. You can download both from the magisk thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
This will work on your stock rom as well as on custom roms.
Install Adaway to remove popup add like videos in games: https://adaway.org (root needed for this)
An other cool mod is this modified youtube app to remove all adds from videos and allow to play with the screen off or the app in the background: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-iytbp-injected-youtube-background-t3560900
All the information you need is in the first, second and third post.
I'd probably recomend the third post method, using the magisk module. It's the easiest one, you just have to download the file for you CPU architecture (arm for moto g4) and install it in the magisk manager, in the modules section pressing the "+" icon (Root also needed for this).
You can find guides to all of this on youtube, and always read all the instructions before trying anything.
Many of your questions will have most likely already been asked, so also search the threads before asking something.
Good luck!

New ROM for my S5 Neo

Been using LineAge OS for a while, it was nice. Freed up whole lot of spaces
Looking however for a new one as it has some issues and the one I used is unofficial
-How long will LineAge OS goes official and fixes some issues I have:
>Can not hear any calls from Viber or Facebook Messenger app, can only speak to other person
>Some apps would freeze or crash (mainly social apps like Facebook and Tumblr, game apps never crashed yet)
-Zapryannov seems to be a nice alternative, I am using G903W model. But feel free to shoot other alternatives
-Are there any special steps to flash new custom ROM from an existing one or do I reboot to TWRP, wipe stuff and flash Zip as usual?
-Cyanogenmod was popular in the past but I can't seem to find it, did they support S5 Neo before?
Custom ROM removes a lot of preinstalled apps that I have, hence I want it. Using stock rom and removing preinstalled apps seems unsafe (with root).

1- nobody knows. But what does it make a difference? Just for the status being "official"? It doesn't mean anything, I ran unofficial builds for years on various phones and some had problems others didn't.
The thing is, this device doesn't seem to have very much development going on, so maybe 1 or 2 Devs working on such a project won't make it bug free very fast. ROM development is a time consuming hobby.
U can probably help them speeding up development if u insist on getting this ROM "official".
1- > those are bugs, read above
1- > read above
2- just try, that's why where on xda, .. to try..
3- the usual
4- cyanogenmod is lineage os these days
