Axon 7 changed from A2017G to A2017U - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I bought my A7 over a year ago and flashed Lineage OS pretty soon after, I'm trying to update my LOS version as I haven't updated it since then but I realised that my phone is now calling itself A2017U when it was definitely previously a A2017G. I have no idea if this happened when I installed LOS or another time as I have only just realised.
How will this affect my update process? Will I need to use files for 'U or 'G?

You need to use files for whatever it says on the back of the phone, i.e. A2017G in your case. The Universal Bootloader changes the name to A2017U because it's basically universal and based on U firmware. Don't panic.

To install google play and make the phone works for your country, the seller must had messing around with your phone.
So before make any risk, you should unlock bootloader, then you can flash recovery and install A2017U or A2017G (depend on where you live). It have google service pre-install, english without chinese craps.
That could be my next step but i'm not really confident doing this right now (newbee). My concern is will my 2/3/4G work well with a A2017G on a CN phone, no modem or band problem ? Of coure that would be more simple because after i will be able to do all updates with OTA. Anybody can confirm that going from A2017 to A2017G work 100% ? Is there a guide A2017 (CN) to A2017G ? I see a lot of good informations here on xda but i don't want to brick my new phone . So if someone can provide me a step by step or a link with the full procedure that will help me a lot.

I myself run A2016U on chinese model. Work fabulous (wifi, cellurar, mobile network) - as long as you flash right modem.
My phone is already unlock bootloader when seller gives it to me, and I do plenty things (even run into EDL only, but not dead still, chinese model rule!!).
Yes the key point is the modem ... I'm too newbee to make the sorcer apprentice ... I really need some help to do that right.

Okay I also ordered the same phone (A2017 China version) from AliExpress and the seller installed Google play and international language support. My phone came with B07 (same as yours).
Now read this really carefully, your phone is not stock, to install Google play and language support the seller messes around with the phone at the system level, so the phone will not receive OTA updates and will not flash OTA update files, the Chinese recovery is also useless. Any attempt to forcefully update the device will soft brick your phone.
You can keep running the B07 ROM but of you want to update you will have to unlock bootloader, root and install TWRP on your phone.
I have created a rar file with all the files you need to root and unlock bootlader:
https://ufile.io/980b3
Follow the instructions here:
Follow the instructions here.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/newbies-guide-to-unlocking-rooting-axon-t3496234
Remember to run the backup program "axon7backup.exe" to backup your recovery and boot before rooting.
Also update twrp using fastboot once you have unlocked the bootloader.
After installing the latest twrp you can update to the latest nougat chinese build using this:

Thanks Vurio, doing like you said bring me to A2017 B13 Nougat 7.1 in chinese version right ? Is that preferable and more easier to do this than trying to go on A2017G ? I'm in Switzerland and the phone work great 2G/4G so i don't really need to be on G version. Just one more newbee question, every time i put a new firmware i will need to reinstall all my apps and of course Googplay ?
If I flash the u or g version on this phone. Are the LTE bands 20 unlocked like one the g version?
I have the Chinese version. All i done when i got it was flashed the full Chinese firmware and installed Google services and apps. I've been getting the ota updates and am now on 7.1.1. Which came ota Sunday. I did not need to root or anything.
I'm in uk.

Thanks for your reply Alom5, difference with your situation is that they allready put googleplay and international language before sending the phone to me... I would love to be in your situation but it same that it's not the case ...

Everytime you flash a new ROM, you need to wipe data, so yes you need to reinstall Google play and all your apps. But if you are rooted you can use titanium backup and that makes restoring apps really easy and quick.
About the firmware, axon 7 has 3 versions, Chinese, European and american. Each one comes with its own set of 4g bands and that cannot be changed no matter what you flash.
The Chinese and the american versions are most compatible with each other. You can use the American rom on the Chinese version but the changes will be aesthetic only. You will get rid of all the annoying Chinese text and apps and your phone will look and feel more "global". The modem of the phone will still remain Chinese so the bands won't change.
Ok so titanium is a must because we will have some new firmware this year ...
I'm not a newbie on computer thing but Android .... I discover it on my shield tv 2 monthes before ... I'm not scared to try but it's the fact to try and not to be sure 100% that work.
Your solution same to be the one but i see now that some (other) chinese seller propose A2017 CN version with A2017G installed ... How they do that ? Did they also flash the modem ?
I repeat i dont really need A2017G but i want to apply the most optimal option for my situation and when you don't really know what you do, it's not easy ... Also when you just pay some $$ to a brand new phone ...

The modem will not work. The modem will only work for the particular device. The seller on AliExpress never have the best reputation.
I am guessing that they would flash the European ROM but leave the modem Chinese. This is possible but European compatibility is not the best with Chinese version.
The american on the other hand has the best compatibility and even received updates faster. For eg. American version is on 7.1.1 whereas the European version is on 7.0.
And I completely agree with your sentiments on your new phone. One should always be careful and have complete information before messing around with a phone.
Also titanium backup only works on rooted phones. Titanium and adaway are the only reason that the first thing I do when I get a new phone is root it ??

I bought mine from aliexpress. They done the same thing and put a note saying you shouldn't do anything... Or something to that effect. Trust me, your in exactly the same situation. There's a few threads on here from a few months ago. All you need to do is flash the stock firmware. Flag the Google apps and update them and away you go. Check the threads, I'm out so ain't got time to look but i think they were in the general section. Definately easy as pie. I've not had to write my phone since. Have had a couple of ota updates and no problems

Did you flash the official firmware without rooting and installing TWRP?
Yes. I have never rooted the phone or installed any other recovery. Just flashed the firmware by having it on the internal sd card and update software.
Please read through the thread where this is discussed in detail and works easy before you start.
I followed info from that thread and it went fine.

Ok alom5 you got my attention now. I'm really not in hurry f you can give me the thread (when you have some time) tomorow or later. This phone is so great, i will take my time to make the right think. Just to be clear you receive OTA after flashing ? So i need to flash the stock A2017 B07 ( i presume), then reinstall "properly" googplay and after i will receive all news OTA update ? Sound great ... Could be the easiest way for me ... When you flash back to stock and restart can you choice the language or are you only in chinese ?
I'm searching in the forum and if i see right i can directly flash the B13 version for SD ? http://www.zte.com.cn/china/sitecor...rt/detail?id=B4C0ACE418834F588FED0C72D6046C78 I'm downloading right now ... 9 hours remaining ...
This thread should help you.

A2017G updates?

Hi,
I just received my A2017G from Gear Best a week ago to replace my crappy Asus Zenfone 3. So far the Axon 7 has out performed the Zenfone 3 in a number of important areas and I mostly like it. However, it is still on Android 6.0.1 with B11. That is nearly a year old now but I cannot find any OTA updates. I had found the B05 update on ZTE's site, is that safe to install? Any show stopping problems or bugs with that? Is there a newer and/or better one? I do not want to screw up my brand new phone that is bought to replace a screwed up Zenfone 3 which had bad updates and Asus not fixing the bugs their updates introduced. In the past, I had phones and tablets being turned to crap after updates so I am weary about applying any updates.
Is it possible to install the A2017U firmware onto my A2017G phone without root? I do not want to root as I had bricked a brand new phone in the past by rooting.

Look, you should have no problem updating via official channels. If anything does happen, simply with a 4gb SD card you can fix it. And if it bricks you can use MiFlash most of the time, so don't worry about official updates. The risky part is TWRP and that kind of thing, though basically that's what we are here for...
ZTE's OTAs are hopelessly broken, they only work if you are on certain locales and system versions, but fortunately they made a pretty okay update system.
Before doing anything, check that your phone is an A2017G by looking at the back. If it's from GearBest it should be an A2017G, but many times people bought an A2017 with A2017G firmware and lost the signal while updating with an A2017G package.
The latest version is B09 for the A2017G. It's from Sweden but it works on any G.
DO NOT INSTALL A2017U or A2017 UPDATES ON YOUR PHONE UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOSE SIGNAL AND MAYBE YOUR IMEIS.
There is a special method to install U firmware on the G but it involves modifying zips and unlocking the bootloader.
For the A2017G B09 update, simply go to raystef66's Download center and download the B09 update zip. Then just put it on the root of the internal storage and go to Updates, and it should pop up as an OTA
For the future: If you download one of these update zips from ZTE, you will get a zip with a bunch of numbers as the name. The actual zip that you want is inside that zip, and it's called update.zip.
What Raystef66 does is get that zip, unpack it, rename it to something understandable, and upload it to androidfilehost. So you're better off geting your updates from there

Thanks for such a detailed answer. I can confirm that mine is the A2017g version as it says so both on the back and on the box.
Is there any major problems with the B09 update? The reason I am very weary about updates is Asus broke the Bluetooth, camera focus and even the phone's charging with their updates and did not fix it for months. This is the reason I got the ZTE Axon 7 and I do not wish to break it as it is functioning perfectly at the moment.

That happened with the first 3 Nougat versions. B01 was somewhat okay, B02 broke a couple things, and B03 fixed those but destroyed Google services. Ever since B03 we've been mostly bug-free, and they weren't too slow to fix stuff anyways
I've run B04 B08 and now B09 and to be honest, not seen a real difference between them, all stable. Phone works good. I did have to fix my APN settings a little after the B08 update but that's easy.
Nougat B09 wifi issue
ello everyone, my name is John, live in Romania. I own an axon7, A2017G from Gearbest, just updated from MMB11 to Nougat, B09, using info from here, thanks. One problem though, onMM it would connect at 866 mbs to my 5GHz network, and test just below 400mbs. On Nougat, it connects at 433mbs and tests around 260 mbs. No change tot the router, not even restart. Do you know how to correct this? Maybe older version of N? Have a nice day. Your help here is invaluable...
Maybe check settings for location as different countries have a different range of channels etc.

Hello,
What do you mean? Like regional settings (language)? There are no location related options in wifi settings... Maybe I could find some settings in hidden menu, but I don`t know how to access that... In developer options, I couldn`t find anything related.

Yeah, I already tried 3 versions of Nougat, B06, B08, B09 and it is the same on all if them. If i flashed MM B11 again, then it would connect at 866mbs again. I have sent an email to zte support... Anyway, now I am on B09 N, but it seems phone is a little warm all the time...has anyone else experienced that?
Thanks for answer, have an interesting day.

Basically the differences are Nougat, improved camera with RAW, Daydream, and maybe some more stuff but i don't remember.
I can't live without the double tap on Recents and I believe performance is better on Nougat, but aside from that and security patches MM is still okay

Hello William, thanks for the answer.
I reversed to MM B11 now, but there is a problem in the mi favor launcher, when accessing google apps folder, the launcher crashes and after 3 crashes it resests all view and icons? Why?
I will flash Nougat, I live in Romania...which variant should I flash, the B05 which is for Romania, on ZTE support page, or B09 (Sweden)?
Thanks have a great day and happy holidays.

Hello rzarechta,
I am also using axon 7 on digimobil...do you have a 5GHz wifi network? On mine, it connects at 866mbs and scores around 350 mbs in speedtest, on MMB11 but on Nougat, it connects at 433mbs and only scores around 250mbs. Do you have some advice, an alternative for the gallery apk, for the axon? It is horrible, does not show which albums are on sd card and which on phone storage...I also don't like google photos...
Thank you very much for helping.

Next time read before doing With 7.1 there is no longer bootloader mode. Downgrade to 6. Also you dont need to unlock it, there is no better ROMs for this rom. Official one is best. I tried them, so you can save time and use official one.
ALso root not working well with it. I had root but somehow i couldn't delete system apps.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, if so, I can start another.
I recently purchased this phone (B2017G) from Gearbest as well.
It is still on 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
I have been searching for the right update file, starting with the US version, since that is where I live, but no go. The bootloader says
"E footer is wrong
"E:signature verification failed
"E: open file /cache/fota/error_code error erno = 2
'Installation aborted'
Am I right in thinking I need to find the update with the right signature? I have tried US, Austrian and Russian official ZTE updates with no success so far.. Am I on the right track?
US ZTE Support was as helpful as they could be, but were not familiar with the GearBest global variant. They sent me to the global support site, which won't let me use it, since I'm from the US, lol
Any suggestions? I'm going to try the German update from earlier in this thread after I get home tonight, by the way...
I also purchased mine from Gearbest (B2017G). I believe the phone is for the European market as it comes with a EU plug in the sealed box, but not sure for which country. I tried the firmware for the Spanish model http://www.ztedevice.com/support/detail?id=D4454D33442F45E192A95718509F4586. The update failed.
I just flashed the Nougat 7.1.1 an hour ago from here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73257562&postcount=13.
It already looks promising - the phone is very cool after update. Previously the phone is always warm, even in standby. I hope the battery life is a big improvement.
If you intend to flash this zip file, make sure your phone is a European model B2017G. As posted before I got this phone from Gearbest as many others.
Hi,
Updated to 7.1.1 by OTA 3 weeks ago when i bought the phone from Amazon.
It seems that we'll get Oréo later...amazing ! thks ZTE !
It is not official that Axon 7 Mini (B2017G) will get Android 8 aka Oreo. ZTE should do the update to Oreo as this is one popular phone still.

Root is needed for this phone because it doesn't allow to move ANY app to SD.I sort of recovered the backup of my apps and data with Helium without root, but I need more internal space: with root you can even enable adoptable storage.
If only we can get access bootloader and flash modified boot.bin with magisk...
At the moment I can only use it as backup phone, my everyday phone LG G5 has 7gigs of whatsapp stuff that can only be internal, but most part of the 130+ apps I got are shared in the SD card.
I don't even need TWRP actually, just root to move apps to SD (or a firmware that allows it, since it's a firmware option...ZTE decision)
Flashing nougat 7.1.1 is the best thing I've done - it basically fixed the battery drain. I had to charge 3 times a day before the update. Last night the battery was only down 3%. This morning I recharged it to 93% before I left for work. At 5pm after a days normal use, it still had 55% left. It's just amazing. I think the update flashed out all the nastiest including the suspicious apps that come with the phone. I have no idea what they are - 99003, 99033, 99035 and more. I suspect they are malware although I cant be sure. They consume battery and keep the phone awake. The phone was warm even in standby.

Stock one
Got the 7.1.1 update...
... in a round-about way. Went here http://www.ztedevice.com/support/detail?id=6CCC18CC9451416C8A01BED5174B5762#software and it downgraded my phone to a December 2016 security update.
Flashed the Russian 6.0.1, (had to use the bootloader method for both), then was able to run the Spanish update from ZTE, directly from the System updates menu after extracting the 'update.zip' file from the package and placing it in the root of the SD.
Now running 7.1.1 and happy. I can still access AT&T's US network perfectly, so I didn't destroy the usefulness of my new phone as a phone.
I may eventually put a second T-Mobile sim in it if I think I can live without the SD card's storage...
Edit: I am running a GearBest-purchased phone with 'global' firmware, meaning no official updates available. It is possible that I could have tried to use the Spanish 7.1.1 directly, but I didn't try that before taking the route I did. Just happy *something* worked!
Still no root? Even a firmware where I can patch boot.img with magisk and repack and flash?
I did it with Ulefone S8Pro, but because someone here posted the firmware and it was editable and flashable without getting errors! No TWRP, but who cares, I have adoptable storage and Is essential with those "low" internal memory phones....
A ZTE moderator on the official US site has disconfirmed my report of Oreo on Axon 7 Mini:

Please disregard my earlier reporting. Although my report was accurate as far as what I had heard, the rep I chatted with was likely mistaken.

Simcard not recognized after downgrading from Pie to Nougat or Oreo

Hi all,
I’d would really appreciate some comments or suggestions on how to solve following problem.
I bought an Essential phone on ebay this week (Sprint “unlocked”), and it came with Android 9 Pie. I initially put a simcard from an operator here in my country and it worked fine.
Due to work reasons I need the phone to be rooted with Android 7.1.1 Nougat (compatibility issue with a software used for testing celullar networks), so as a first step I flashed one of the Nougat images available in Essential’s website. This wasn’t a problem since I had already done this procedure with other Essential phones.
After successfully flashing Nougat, when I inserted back the simcard the phone did not recognize it. I upgraded back to 9.0, and the simcard was working again. The same happened when I downgraded to Oreo for testing.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how could I proceed to solve this issue? I really need it to run Nougat.
Thank you in advance for your feedback!
Make sure you unlocked the critical partitions, that's needed for the full image to flash and produce a fully functioning device, else there may be incompatibilities in the radio/modem/hardware/bootloader.

You need to do a full wipe of the data when going backwards.
There is some setting hanging around that is not compatible.
I have seen this also

Oreo OTA update not showing when when refreshing system updates.

So basically, my friend has been on nougat 7.1.1 for like a year now. Even though the update has been out for so long, it doesn't show up when I search for it through system updates. When I recently downgraded to nougat, I immediately got notified that the oreo update was available. So why doesn't it show up for him? Also if I were to download the update and install it manually, his data would be safe right? I wouldn't have to make a backup since it's just another OTA right?
What version is your friend's axon7? I once got a chinese version that was flashed with global rom, and it will never get any update untill you flash the original rom.

Nah he bought an A2017G spanking new. He shouldn't have this problem. Also funny story, I recently rooted my phone and installed magisk and LOS 15.1. Somehow its model is now A2017U. Any explanation?
I second that question. Got one second-hand two weeks ago with Nougat 7.1.1. No updates popping up, when I let it search for them.
I have same problem. Android 7.1.1 A2017GV1.2.0B05 and no update find...
