Hi, everyone,
I really want to receive OTA updates for my rooted P10 Plus, My phone is VKY-AL00 ... B157. and I also found this: Mate 9 Flash Rebrand
From some google search, I find out I need to unroot (not sure if I need to relock the bootloader) to receive OTA.
Since I'm really new to the Android world, please answer some of the questions or check my understanding.
0. Rooting will generate a modified boot.img?
1. I can install OTA system without uninstalling TWRP.
2. To unroot I only need to use the boot.img from official/stock
2.1 in my case, I need to flash B157 stock version of boot.img
2.2 If i backed up boot.img before I rooted, I can still use the backed up one to unroot
3. To keep my messages, call histories and apps' data, I need to use twrp to back up /data
4. generally by saying 'you need to back up' means you just back up the /data
5. Can you please let me know what recovery.img and boot.img is generally for ? in a nutshell
Thanks!
Z
I'm hoping someone can help out or point me in the right direction. I'm new to the Huawei environment.
My Rogers P10 Plus is currently on firmware VKY-L09C654B195. My bootloader is unlocked, I have TWRP installed, and I'm rooted (using this method - https://forum.xda-developers.com/p10-plus/development/root-huawei-p10-plus-vky-y-dm-verity-t3605061)
1) I've been getting notifications that there's a new system update, VKY-L09C654B198. I tried updating once and it obviously failed as it just rebooted into TWRP and nothing happened. Apparently I've read that I can't just update this way. I've searched the forum and seen various methods of updating (dload, HWOTA,...) but I can't seem to find this VKY-L09C654B198 file anywhere to manually download. How do I update my phone? Or better question, is it even worth my trouble to do this update?
2) I understand that DATA backup with TWRP is currently not working. Am I safe in assuming that doing a SYSTEM backup with TWRP, and backing up my apps and DATA with TitaniumBackup is sufficient if I end up messing up a firmware update?
if you want latest firmware from Huawei you would need it's original boot loader and non-root device :/ So so far you won't be able to get B198 atm since of no one has shared a copy of it. If you did it would require a re-root since updating the device would revoke the rooted changes. Which I mean root access will be lost.

Any Luck. I need a twrp backup of VKY-L09C654B198. I wanted to install the Magisck custom rom and it failed. No my twrp says no OS installed and I rebooted into bootloader. I tried to restore with DC Phoenix, now my Serial number is 0123456789ABCDEF and I can't boot into twrp as the unlock code generated earlier no Longer works. If I use dc HCU tool to restore the serial number, I will need the twrp backup to restore my p10 Plus.

Sorry, I haven't been able to find anything to help with my issues. But it isn't really a big deal for me as it wasn't really a high priority. Sorry to hear about the trouble you've run into.

Mehn it's been a week and I am unable to boot the phone so sad:crying:
I found the update files for VKY-L09C654B198 on hicloud site, will I be able to get back to stock if I mess up something (like flashing custom ROMs...). I read up on guides for using HWOTA, is this all I need to be sure I can return to stock if I need to?

Hello Community,
I am trying to update my Oneplus 5 (A5000) from
OxygenOS 4.5.14 / Android 7.1.1 / A5000_23_171031
to
OxygenOS 5.0.1 (OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_028_all_1801031502_04d7cc5.zip)
OxygenOS 5.1.4 (via OTA)
OxygenOS 5.1.5 (OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_038_all_1808082017_028e075c45a84106.zip)
I am getting an "Installation failed" error, no matter which option or image I use to upgrade:
- Download from Oneplus Homepage and Install local file from recovery
- Updating via "System updates" in Android
- Updating via "System updates -> local upgrade"
I read all the posts in this forum from the last 2 months, but nothing really seams to work:
- wipe the cache in recovery
- install "older" version than 5.1.4/5.1.5 - in my case 5.0.1
- try different methods like flash from recovery, flash from local upgrade in Android...
I have an unlocked bootloader, but the phone is not rooted. I can not tell exactly if TWRP has ever been used before, because I bought this as a used phone, which already had an unlocked bootloader. Nevertheless I was able to install previous OTA updates. But now all updates are failing.
Anyone here who could help me please?
Best Regards,
Daniel

Hello, Do you have twrp running or stock recovery? Have you ever tried to factory reset and then install 5.0.1/5.1.4? Or format internal storage too and afterwards install the full 5.0.1 or 5.1.4 oos rom?

Thanks for your response. I use stock recovery. I didn't try to do factory reset or format internal storage, because I don't want to lose any data if possible.

Have you at least wiped cache in recovery(you did not mention which sort of recovery you have). Wiping cache is also an option and you'll not loose any data.
Recommendation: keep in mind to backup your whole phone from time to time
There was a similar post to this one recently where a device wouldn't update to any version of OOS. Relocking the Bootloader first was the solution in that case. You could try that.

Thanks for the reminder, I agree a 100% with you. :good:
Phone is fully backed up, I still prefer not to lose any data, as setting up everything again is not the most enjoyable thing for me.
Wiping cache via stock recovery is something I already did before, unfortunately luck.

Thanks! I think I already have seen this post, but can't find it right now. You are right, the solution was to lock the bootloader.
I wanted to avoid deleting all my data. Therefore I am primary looking for another solution. Maybe instead of going back and locking the bootloader again, going into the "other direction" where I can take advantage of the already unlocked bootloader, e.g. install custom recovery and update OSS this way? What do you think?
Best Regards,
Daniel
I had the same issue some weeks ago and the solution for me was to update from 4.5.14 to 5.0.0 with all data reset (i had already lost everything anyway). But you can maybe try it without wiping everything, only Dalvik cache. I can't find where I downloaded the 5.0.0 version (that is not stable) but I can maybe upload it on mediafire for you if you want.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Did you also have an unlocked bootloader?
I would really appreciate it, if you could upload the 5.0.0 image for me. Then I would give it a try. :good:
Yep unlock bootloader and unable to relock it, for unknown reasons (I didn't try again since).
I'll upload the 5.0.0 OOS when i'm back home tonight .
Think about using blu_shark modified TWRP, it's full Oreo compatible.

here there is the 5.0.0 OOS versions I've found : http://www.mediafire.com/folder/97sy3q5jde1tj/Roms_OP5
But be careful, and download the 5.0.1 also because the 5.0.0 is really unstable (5.0.1 is a hot fix). I used 5.0.0 only to go to 5.0.1 right after minimal configuration.

Thanks for your effort. I haven't had the time to continue with my open task.
Unfortunately, I came across multiple postings which explicitly warned of lost data, bootloops and other strange behaviors when updating from 4.5.14 to 5.x.x while having an "open/unlocked" bootloader.
I am a little bit worried this could also affect me in my situation. I am really not in the mood to brick my device...
Maybe I will reset everything, lock my bootloader and install everything from scratch. Just need to find the time to do this.
Even after a factory reset I wasn't able to go from 4.5.14 to 5.x.x, maybe it's link to the fact that I wasn't able to relock my bootloader. Anyway give us some news, could be useful for the next guy with the same issue !

Hello everyone,
For a while now, I have been delaying this, because I can't afford to lose the content that I have on this device
I have a Oneplus 5 OxygenOS 5.1.4 release that I can't install. Everytime I do, it just fails, and reboot. A while after, I have a new notification telling me that the update is available
My phone is not rooted but I think the bootloader is unlocked. TWRP isn't installed either
Is there any way for me to easily update my phone witout risks of losing what I have on it ? Might be a dumb question, but I'm a huge noob
Thansk a lot for your help

Do you get the bootloader unlock warning message at boot? Is the device new or used? You want to update from 5.1.4 to 5.1.5 with ota right? Does the ota download 1.7GB or detect root before downloading?
Hello strongst and thanks for your answer
The phone is old but it's always been mine. I rooted it a while back but I reinstalled everything, which is why the bootloader is unlocked even tho the phone isn't rooted.
I do have the warning message when I boot
I'm trying to update with OTA indeed. When I do so, it downloads the update, reboots, and then I get this :
"Instaling, please wait..." and a few seconds after "Installation failed"
Then I just rebot the phone and everything is back to its initial state

I'm guessing it downloads partial ota and not a full rom like about 1,7GB so the update fails. In case you have twrp you can easily download the 5.1.5 FULL zip from here and flash it https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3628190
I am sorry that my answer wasn't complete.
- I do have the bootloader message
- The device is a year old, but only used by me
- It's trying to download 5.1.4 OTA which is 1609MB. It downloads everything and tries to install it
- No root is detected
- I don't have TWRP on the phone
Thanks for your answers
Best way it simply install latest TWRP like Sian, do a dirty flash with the full OOS Rom package (5.1.7) for force update.
1/ Do a full backup of your data / sms / pictures on your computer (just for be sure, you must always backup for big changes, especially with encrypted roms)
2/ install TWRP Sian
3/ On TWRP > Wipe > Dalvik/ART - Cache paritions
4/ Install > the latest stable OOS 5.1.7 Rom
5/ Just after that flash Magisk (if you want keep the custom recovery) or don't flash Magisk (stock recovery will erase TWRP after SetupWizard)
Hello Pho3nX, thanks for your answer.
I tried to figure out what "TWRP Sian" is, but I couldn't find anything. I found this one : https://twrp.me/oneplus/oneplus5.html and I'm planning on following the "Fastboot Install Method". Is that OK ?
Do you recommand me to flash Magisk ?
Thanks a lot

If you have no twrp already installed on your device you must flash the twrp.img file with fastboot like "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img"

Error 7 for me i tried i'm with unlocked bootloader latest TWRP by Eng.stk and i removed form the zip also compatibility.zip
Hello,
I finally managed to install the zip thanks to TWRP, but it seems that my cellphone is stuck on the boot turning logo with the two red dots turning around the big red one
Fixed : https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/help/bricked-oneplus-5-t3884364
First of all, I want to tell you that I'm not very familiar with rooting but have just a bit experience flashing custom roms, so please go easy on me.
I have done some research and found a couple things that I couldn't find answers for:
1) First one is that apparently you need your bootloader unlocked/ OEM unlocking enabled in developer options, however since I upgraded to Oreo in last August, that option disappeared. I've tried two methods for making it appear that I've found online (keeping phone up for 7 days straight and reverting time back) but none worked. I've read somewhere that if you downgrade to Nougat, enable it then re update to Oreo your bootloader will remain unlocked. So, can someone confirm this? Can you downgrade with a locked bootloader? And if so, can someone guide me through it? (Additional question: will the downgrade reset user data?)
2) After unlocking bootloader you need to flash TWRP but I have so many questions on that. First: I couldn't find a TWRP for oreo. Does it work regardless of os version? Second: I found a guide from XDA that is written long ago, and it says "make a full backup of your system, including EFS before flashing". How do you backup without flashing it tho? All guides are about using either a custom recovery or rooted app.
3) Do you really need TWRP? I mean, can't you flash Magisk via Odin/ADB directly, perhaps without unlocking bootloader? What happens if I use install command from ADB?
4) So does tripping knox fuse achieve anything other than killing the nonexistent system updates and samsung guarantee? I want to make sure Samsung health is going to operate.
