Soft bricked my phone, could somebody help me?

Hi everyone, sorry for a noob problem but I seemed to have soft bricked my phone and was hoping that somebody here would be able to help me out. I have an A2017U in the US.
A short history:
I had been using my phone on B20 rooted/locked with tenfar's tool for about 3 months now, and decided I would try and update it finally before the new year.
To update it, after reading it seemed I would need to unlock the bootloader to keep root on B29 so I decided first step would be to unlock the bootloader and then update to B29. I did the following steps today
1) Unlock bootloader using DrakenFX's guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165 The unlocked proved successful and I was able to boot back into B20 after all the data was wiped, and I followed the instruction to backup the Boot in TWRP. All good.
2) I then decided to follow another of DrakenFX's guides (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2) to update from B20 to B29. I followed the instructions exactly again, but then the phone just hangs on the ZTE logo on boot infinitely. I wondered if I made a mistake when re-initializing TWRP after unlocking the bootloader. I did a search and found in "Mount" to uncheck "Mount system partition read-only" and unchecked it. The System partition however is unmounted, I'm not sure if that's normal now or not. Even when I check it, after rebooting it goes away. I've checked the MD5 of the ZTE_A2017U.B29_StockSystem_by_DrakenFX.zip file and it's good. I then flashed through fastboot to the new 3.0.3-0 TWRP which I'm now using, and still nothing. It appears I don't have an OS installed. I'm going to guess here the issue is with a setting in TWRP but I've tried everything I could find. Unfortunately I don't seem to have a copy of my stock recovery right now to flash either. I've tried several times to flash ZTE_A2017U.B29_StockSystem_by_DrakenFX.zip and reboot but to no avail. I even tried this tip from rczrazor to delete DATA first and others one by one (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69428659&postcount=136) but no such luck for me. Still stuck on the ZTE logo.
tl;dr - I have access to fastboot and TWRP, but apparently no ROM installed even though have flashed now multiple times.
If anybody could help me I would greatly appreciate it. I'm even willing to pay a few bucks in Paypal to help get me going again.

This happened to me once - boot to TWRP, format data, reboot to TWRP, advanced wipe everything but the external SD card,reboot to TWRP, flash DrakenFX B29 bootstack, reboot to TWRP, flash DrakenFX B29 system.

I have bricked my AXON 7 many times during the last week. The Zip files from DrakenFX are very good. But in case those were still failling...
First, check for corrupted downloads, just check the zip file integrity using 7zip, winRAR or any other tool.
Use TWRP 3.0.3
Try a different ROM such as ZADMix or even CM13.
If everything fails:
Flash TWRP 3.0.2 signed.
Flash the original Stock B29 Boot partition and reboot to recovery
Flash again the verified DrakenFX files.

Axon 7 A2017U B29 Root, BL unlock, and TWRP

Can someone walk me through how to Unlock the bootloader, root, and install TWRP? I'm so confused. I tried to do the newbie way, even though I'm not a newbie, and I lost my B29 Stock Recovery and can't find the download for it.

I haven't done it yet but I've done a lot of reading and this seems to me the best guide.

Once you're in there go to bootloader unlock section. Download all the necessary files and on the bottom of the guide there will be instructions link which will take you here https://build.nethunter.com/misc/axon7/INSTRUCTIONS.txt
Follow that and that should do it.
When i get a weekend off ill be using this method to get the Lineage OS 14.1 on my device.

Search, Read & Follow --CAREFULLY--.
It's been a while, but this worked great for me, starting from B29.

Very well written and I wish I had seen it sooner. I was going to write a clear guide on this subject only to find.. it already existed.. --nolimit78

@amphi66 I am on 2017U B29 and want to unlock bootloader, install TWRP and root. I also read newbies thread. I am confused about one thing. which TWRP recovery image should I use? a2017u B27 http://d-h.st/kRgq or TWRP recovery 3.0.2-2 : http://d-h.st/dgWW ? There is no file for B29 on newbie's thread and in FAQ, the OP said B27 should work for B29. Which one did you use?
After reading, I also see some people said tenfar's tool is too dangerous and it may brick your phone. Some people also claimed the back up of TWRP recovery 3.0.2 provided on that thread has some bugs may cause you to loose your IMEI number when you do recovering. Do you have any issues? Thanks!

This was back last Nov, but I followed the guide, using the recommended files (was on B29, but used the B27 OK, then reflashed B29 at the end).
The warning involved backing up and then restoring the EFS partiton with tenfar's tool. DON'T! If you stick with system, data, and boot partitions you should be fine.
Good luck. You may want to check with @nolimit78. He has done this much more recently.

Yes, I agree with you @amphi66 that there is a lot of different places to get information about how to root/flash recovery for A2017U B29. Here's what I've done with two different A7's and both have worked each time.
1. Boot the phone to EDL Mode (Both Vol+Power on boot it'll quick flash the red notification light and then act like it's off.. it's not)
2. Use tenfar's tool to flash the recovery. (I renamed the updated TWRP img and named it "recovery". This used tenfar's tool to flash the updated TWRP on your device.
3. Once in TWRP, run the command (reboot disemmcwp and relaunch TWRP) and flash the package to use modifiable bootloader from B20.
4. Once that flashes now you can send the command in Fastboot "fastboot oem unlock" which will unlock the bootloader that doesn't trip anything notifying ZTE
5. At this point you can flash a B29 rom and have a grand ol' time. However, I would recommend using the LineageOS Rom that's available. Trumps everything else out there IMHO.
6. To do that You'll need to flash the Nougat Bootstacks for that rom to boot prior to flashing the Rom itself. I would recommend flashing the nougat bootstacks, reboot to TWRP, flash LineageOS, reboot.
Like I said, I've done with this with two different devices (Thanks ZTE) and both worked out just fine. I did this method with a device with b27 and b29, both ended up updated and flashed with CM/LineageOS with ZERO issues. This post here should also be pinned as the one true guide (THE KING OF THE NORTH) for unlocking/rooting a stock Axon 7. I spent probably about 4-5 hours working, trying to figure out how to get my device unlocked/rooted. However.. at the very end I wrote out instructions trying to help those who would come after me.. I searched the threads to make sure there wasn't already a thread out there.. and then.. it turns out there was.

A2017U su binary not found after flashing supersu

Hi all
So it was all running nice and stable, before the evil b25 update that destroyed my axon 7 completely and made it useless, I'll tell how
so after updating I figured out I can't access fastboot to flash anything, and I figured out I wasn't the only one with this "meme" that zte made.
so I decided to roll back to b19 using Miflash and b19 edl package, I thought my problem would end here.
Then I flashed twrp via fastboot, and upgraded to b25 using b25 bootstack + b25 zip by drakenfx, all good.
then I tried to root b25 the good ol' way by flashing supersu zip, only to find that I'd end up with this newer meme, "unable to find su binary"
seems like the sort of thing you'd get if you had a locked bootloader, which is suspicious, judging that no one was able to get fastboot on b25
I also figured out I wans't the only one as people from "root b25" threads know that you can't root b25 even if you had twrp
so I rolled back again to b19 using miflash....you know the story
now here comes the interesting part, the meme, didn't go away, I tried to root my b19 a2017u by flashing supersu
I tried everything, flashing b19 bootstack, formatting data flashing different supersu versions etc.
, either ended up with a bootloop, or the famous "su binary is not installed"
I never had this before updating to b25 and now I can't get rid of it even without b25
can someone guide me to root stock b19 properly and get rid of this meme? (bonus if you know how to root b25 properly because I liked b25 more, there is a7x kernel for b25 so I guess we can root b25? maybe not? )
note that I don't want magisk, I just want the good ol' supersu, nothing more nothing less.
My opinion is the new b25 somehow messes the bootloader and now it's locked again, but this time you can't unlock it even if you downgrade and flash edl bootloader unlock via miflash.

First of all is your bootloader unlocked? if so than try this out.
1. go into EDL and flash B19-NOUGAT_FULL, after that don't reboot yet put it in EDL mode again and yes you have to put in EDL again
2. now in EDL flash B19-NOUGAT_TWRP, once you done flashing it just boot into TWRP
3. in TWRP click on mount and make sure that MOUNT SYSTEM PARTITION READ-ONLY is check
4. now flash A2017UV1.1.0B25_bootstack_by_DrakenFX.zip
5. flash A2017UV1.1.0B25_StockSystem_by_DrakenFX.zip DO NOT REBOOT
6. flash superSU 2.79

Holding power and both volume keys at the same time for ~15 seconds (until the LED flashes) restarts EDL without actually having to get out y'kno.

Are you sure this would work?? can you confirm by reading my post again?? I just can't believe the whole solution to this would be this simple plus I don't like to have another brick to waste my mind on, Im currently busy with the 2nd term in college :crying: please confirm this asap by re-reading the 1st post.
(100% will try anyways because I have everything backed up )

I clearly mentioned that I tried all this, to be more clear I tried the whole drakenfx method with all possibilities including the method you mentioned, and yes my bootloader was unlocked before all this.
Just for clarification as your post may misguide some people, because you don't mount read only when doing this, because if you do you can't use your system partition at all, you only mount read only after flashing twrp for the first time or when you don't want to flash supersu/no verity (something no one wants to do)
I appreciate your help anyways.

UPDATE ON THE SITUATION:
It didn't... *sigh*
but...it worths to mention 1 thing I noticed after booting (regardless of supersu version flashed)
That su permissions get granted, but for a limited periods/times only, and then I get the "root undetected/su binary not found" error afterwords.
which was suspicious, so I ran "su" command in terminal emulator with the supersu you provided and this is what I got
ailsa_ii:/ $ su
WARNING: linker: /su/bin/sush: unused DT entry: type 0xaa1303e054ffff68 arg 0xaa1403e2d2800081
Basically a bunch of warnings like the one above, like a dozen of this line ending up with this specific note:
CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE "sush": empty/missing DT_HASH/DT_GNU_HASH in "/su/bin/sush" (new hash type from the future?)
Im losing hope, but at the same time I think I found a thread, only need a dev to help me currently
I'll post this in supersu thread and see, maybe I get a helpful reply
I will also try changing to ext4 because I'm heavily doubting that the reason for all this is my use of f2fs on data partition only.

I've always flash SuperSU after installing A2017UV1.1.0B25_StockSystem_by_DrakenFX.zip with no problem.

tried most of possibilities like this, including step by step follow up of drakenfx's guide.
I may try later, but not now, that takes a lot of time and my a2017u's nand is dying of repeated flash :crying:
but lemme ask you, can/could you access fastboot on b25 stock??

no fastboot on b25 but fastboot on b19
remember to flash B19-NOUGAT_FULL (Nougat 7.1.1) first than VERY IMPORTANT part is to flash B19-NOUGAT_TWRP (Nougat 7.1.1) right after.
just do step 1 and 2.
don't flash b25 yet if you want fastboot
if you want b25 and b25 root just follow step 3

Yeah, not a big surprise
and I'll try everything later when I get enough time, but for now I look for a firmware flash-free method because I don't want to kill the ufs.

UPDATE FOR EVERYONE:
I FINALLY GOT SUPERSU WORKING (atleast this far)
sadly f2fs was the reason behind this error

wew, It's been a long time since my last login here.
afaik it was 2.79 su.
But why you're still on b25 when you can flash newer firmware? when I flashed b32 via edl, I got rid of all these probs (except f2fs, because zte decided that their stock firmware only supports ext4 )
I got fastboot and everything, root xposed etc, if you want the edl package you can search it in drakenfx's androidfilehost account :good:
make sure to backup internal storage manually and backup apps with TB for restoring after edl-flashing b32. I also suggest updating to b35 before rooting and restore since b32 was helluva buggy update

This is exactly why I won't run ZTE's stock ROM, it seems that only Magisk works on B32 and beyond. I have grown to hate Magisk over the years, due to a number of bad experiences with it on various ROMs/devices. On stock, Magisk makes my exFAT SD appear as corrupt, I refuse to format to vfat, fat32. I tried Phh's Superuser and SuperSU, either the device won't boot or I get errors about su not being available. So it's custom AOSP-based ROMs only for me. Which are far superior to stock in most ways.

Help installing TWRP as zip file (no go through Fastboot)

I downgraded from custom Nougat to stock Marshmallow as I discovered that the incall sound (hearing the caller from the ear speaker) is louder and clearer, so of course I lost TWRP recovery and root in the process which is normal. However, I now can't re-install TWRP as a .img file since although I can boot into Android Recovery I can't go into Fastboot mode (phone just re-starts every time) so of course it's no go whether I try Axon Toolkit or ADB via computer. I also tried the EDL route but same thing.
I have all the required ZTE and Qualcom drivers installed. My phone's model is the 2017G and the bootloader is still unlocked.
Only thing I can try is installing TWRP as a zip file through Android Recovery or directly from 'system update' via the phone's menu. Problem is I can't find a zip version of TWRP for the Axon 7
Any help/suggestions most grateful.

If you can use miflash there is a thread somewhere that has stock everything with twrp included. I'm on my phone so I can't find it right now. But if you can't find it by the time I get to my computer I'll look through my history to try and find it.

So the thread I found was actually not for the g model sadly. But, have you seen this thread?

Down a ways there is a "TWRP flashable bootstack/stock system images" section. I think if you can flash those (maybe with miflash?) You should then have fastboot available to flash twrp again.

When you unlocked surely you learned how to use the tools to flash twrp without fastboot.
You can use miflash, the toolkit, tenfar's tool or tenear's tool.
There's a million and one guides on how to to this plus the actual tool threads.
Even the twrp thread has a guide.

I took a look. Not sure which version I should download. Am on B10 and that section only has bootstack versions up to B9. Does it matter which one I choose or should I get the closest which is B9. Also, should I install the stock system that goes with the bootstack version or just the bootstack.

Okay so since I was not paying that much attention (sorry) I just realized that those are bootstacks and stock systems that you can flash in TWRP. My bad. But I have been looking around and on that thread I just had you go to he mentions another thread with step by steps that may help you! Here it is. Good luck!

Ignore the fastboot part. Just reinstall twrp with axon7tool, then install raystef66's TWRP flashable B09 bootstack and stocksystem zips (plus magisk if you won't relock), then follow his guide on how to get rid of the 5 seconds screen to get fastboot and, well, get rid of the 5 seconds screen
p.s. I basically just found out that I said the exact same thing on that crappy Q&A thread...

The link you provided is titled 'Get TWRP and root after updating to Nougat'. As am on Marshmallow I'll have to first update to Nougat? . So do I go ahead and flash stock Nougat from ZTE's page before following the instructions on that page? Sorry for my confusion.
**Update** I followed instructions of link you provided to install TWRP but I came to a brick wall every time. Short story is no matter what I tried I cannot install anything with either ADB, Miflash or Axon Toolkit. The big problem here is the Fastboot issue which otherwise would make things so much easier. Only thing left for me to do is just to upgrade stock firmwares via the phone's update option and remain bootloader unlocked. The Axon 7 is still a great phone, it's just too much hustle getting things done so I'll just have to sell it. Samsung and HTC phones are much easier to work with when it comes to rooting/installing custom ROMs.
***Update 2*** Success!! I managed to install fastboot/bootloader mode by following the section 'Get Fastboot' from that same link you provided so now I have latest TWRP installed and the 5 second notice has also disappeared. Am back in the running now. Many thanks for your help

You could have bricked your device. I specifically told you not to follow that part. Also what has adb, axon7toolkit and miflash got to do with that guide? You have to use axon7tool just like a) it says there and b) i told you on the q&a thread

Yes you did warn me about the fastboot part but I was stuck as nothing else worked. By using the Fastboot instructions I managed to install TWRP and root the phone. I used Miflash to install the fastboot package which was successful. Now I can boot to Fastboot and bootloader via TWRP. Remember am on Marshmallow so I guess that helped not to brick the phone? I don't know but it worked.

Well again, if you want to be on Nougat, download raystef66's flashable B09 bootstack and stocksystem, flash them on TWRP with Magisk 15.2, and follow his guide on how to get rid of the 5 seconds screen (all in twrp, don't get out of it).
Just do all of that or you'll lose fastboot. Also that zip that you got from that ancient guide doesn't work on anything else than Marshmallow

Thanks for the advice. If I keep the phone I'll wait for a stable Oreo update. Nougat didn't impress me much.

Blocked on "Please lock the bootloader" screen A2017G

Hi guys,
First, English isn't my first language so, sorry if it hurts your eyes :/
Second, I'm new to TWRP / root etc... (since yesterday) and I don't fully understand the exact meening of all words like flash / rom etc...
So: I'm actually blocked in the "Your device can't be checked for corruption. Please lock the bootloader". Apparently it's a normal screen now, when we boot we always see this. OK ( at least that's what I read)
My volume keys aren't doing anything and I can't access my phone anymore.
I can access TWRP if I want.

Adb & fastboot still recognize your device ?
If yes flash twrp as recovery with fastboot and boot into it with fastboot.

How can I know if ADB recognize my phone?
I can access TWRP so I don't need to flash it again ? Is there a difference between just flash TWRP and flash TWRP with fastboot ?

Sry, my bad, i miss read that you can access twrp, sry, I thought you can't, what happens if you flash a rom, which twrp is installed, what were your steps that you end stuck on bootloader message ?
Edit: if your issue is that you don't know how to start flashing, read the Los thread and follow the op.
Instructions:
1. Install the Universal bootloader and your model specific modem.Failure to do so will not allow flashing the ROM!
2. Update recovery [Recommended -> Official TWRP for Axon7
3. Factory reset if coming from another ROM.
4. Install ROM
5. Install GApps (optionally) [Recommended -> Open GApps (arm64) (7.1) 2017-02-01 or Newer
Download all files from the thread and put them on to your microsdcard, if your twrp is up to date you don't have to do this again. Flash the zip files in the order of the instructions, just press install at twrp and choose the zips, you can add multiple and flash them together.

I really don't know your issue, except you seem not to read enough. What guide you want ? How I flash a custom rom to my phone ? How to use twrp ?Why you unlocked your bootloader ? How did you manage to have the stock recovery back ?

So you are stuck with stock recovery and not TWRP? If so I would find a guide to "flash" or install TWRP in what is called EDL mode.
If you can do that, you then need to:
boot directly into TWRP and wipe dalvik, system, data, and cache.
Then install universal boot loader and modem for your device. (A2017G)
Next install latest TWRP img found on https://TWRP.me
And lastly reboot into recovery again and install Rom (version of Android you want to try) and any other modifications you want (kernel, gapps, magisk, etc.)

What? You can flash the ROM after flashing the universal bootloader, then also flash TWRP via itself, and you'll stay on the latest...
Rebooting without a ROM is bad. just bad. even rebooting to recovery. that's how i got my dfu brick

I am not 100% sure what you are saying. But yeah, sure. Flash the Rom after the universal bootloader and modem. Then flash twrp. Then reboot.
If you think that is better for OP then that works. I haven't ever had the problem of rebooting to recovery without a rom installed but you're right that it probably is safer.
I only suggested that because the TWRP that comes with the real old universal bootloader on LOS thread is also very old. So, flashing a rom with the new version I thought would be best to avoid errors. Thanks!

The thing is, after you flash the universal bootloader, the TWRP on the sd gets replaced. but the TWRP that you are using is loaded in RAM. So even if you install a TWRP version you'll stay in the version you flashed before until you reboot. If you install the universal bootloader and then install the TWRP img you'll keep everything as-is on the next reboot. I discourage rebooting without a system especially on a G because any interruption might lock the phone in DFU. On an a2017U that wouldn't be a problem because the phone boots into edl if any software error is present
