Internet usage, block it except local LAN - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I'm wondering if it possible to block the NSTV from using the internet if I not want it to. It looks like it uses much data I background that I can't find.
Is it a way to block it, but still have access to my LAN?
And a simple way to turn it on or off?
I use cable, no WiFi to my router.
Petter

Can't you either;-
Block access by device on your router
Or
Give the Shield a static IP address with no gateway / the wrong gateway

That can be an option. But it's not an easy way to manage.
Is there an way to code or an app that can change these network settings?
(So it's get a little bit easier to change it)

Asks again.
Is there an app for this now?
Tried an app for this that's made for phone, but that app was not usable for NSTV.
Don't remember the app name, but found in xda.

Streaming over internet.

Is it possible to access my files / shares over the internet ? Whats the best program to use ? Are there any programs like RealVNC that offer file access options as well as remote control options ? If preferable something with a password that I can save on my wizard so I dont have to keep typing it in all the time.
I have wifi at work so want to be able to access my files that are at home while I am in work like my mp3's. Would they stream ok ?
I think you can stream your mp3s to your wizard if you run slimserver from slimdevices on your home pc and a client on your wizard (though I haven't tried it myself) - take a look at the forums on their website.
Chris
Actually is it streaming ? I just want access to my files, is that one in the same thing ?
Sorry, this is an app which (in effect) enables you to stream (ie play) a music file on your home pc (running slimserver) and listen to it remotely on a client device (e.g. your pda). It doesn't allow you to pick up the music file itself over the internet.
Chris
I can access the shares on my home PC over WiFI using Total Commander but I cant seem to play music directly. I have to copy it across first. It gives a funny error message in WMP if I try to stream it. I will post the error message later.

You would need a Static IP address on your Home broadband connection to do this, not many home broadband packages give you a static IP just a dynamic address that changes at whim.
Presuming you have a static IP you could then get yourself a DAMN good firewall and install Microsoft IIS on your PC to make it a webserver, then get yourself a domain name and point it at your PC. (slightly simplified example above there, but I'm sure you get the drift)
There are probably apps around to do this much sipler but you'd need to google for them. pretty sure that there is a specific version of VNC and PC anywhere that will do what you want

Well I could always just take a note of my pc ip address and as my pc is on a lot of the time it can remain the same for some time. Yeah I thought VNC could do something like that but there doesnt seem to be any option for it.
Static IP, pah!
www.dyndns.org (or many others) give your dynamic IP a static DNS name eg yourname.dyndns.org and then all you need to do is:
1) Manually update your IP
OR
2) Configure your router to update you IP (available on some routers)
OR
3) Get some software to update your IP (lots available, use google)
Now your home network has a static name to access it for any purpose - just change the port on the end
I have web on 80, ftp on 21 and a socks proxy all running - just need to forward the ports on the router
You need ORB!
I use it and can acces all my photo's, MP3's and even movies that are on my home-pc streaming over internet. It works even with GPRS, but with WIFI it works really great.

Isnt there some way of doing it with resco and your ip address ? maybe opening a really obscure port on the router and firewall ? Not sure how those companies work but im a little concerned about my data going through their servers which I presume it is ?
Would just be so much simpler if there was some way of doing it with resco like I do on my home wifi.

Proxy app?

Does anyone know of an app that allows your phone to become a web proxy?
Let me explain my situation... I work for a corporation that filters all their internet connections through a web proxy, which sucks cuz I can't visit any of the fun sites... one way around this I've found was to use ICS on my phone but that interferes with the default gateway on the current network.
All traffic on the network by default goes to an internal gateway on the local intranet and it really needs to stay this way because there are too many work ip's and ports to be able to statically route all of them through a specific destination and leave the default gateway as the ICS 192.168.1.1.
I have been able to create static routes to specific ip addresses (like my home computer) which override the default gateway and use ICS instead.. this is great but obviously not that great for web browsing and masking my use on the internet... what I would like to be able to do is set the HTTP proxy to my phone and have it handle all of the redirection... that would allow me to have a single route in the routing tables but span out to wherever I want on the web...
Oh, and yes, I have thought of just setting up a proxy on my home comp and routing through the phone -> home comp -> back through phone but that obviously limits me to the upstream bandwidth of my home network... which isn't TERRIBLE, and is feasible but obviously if I could eliminate the extra jump it would be much much better.
I can handle the routing tables np, they're easy to add from command-line.. problem is I need some kind of a proxy application on the phone that will handle all of the HTTP calls... anyone know of an application such as this?
Thanks
Hm can't say I know of an app that does this... it is planned for one of the upcoming releases of WMWifiRouter but that's still a while away and may give you the gateway issue again.

Ya I did more googling and still can't find anything... I just setup dante server on my linux vm at home and got a good socks proxy going.. seems to be working very well.. my upstream on cable is 80k/sec so that's not too bad I guess.
I'll keep an eye on wmwifirouter release notes though thanks

Pornography blocking proxy

I know this may sound weird to some of you but I have been looking for a way to block pornography in windows mobile. The easiest way I could think to do this was to simply add a content filtering proxy to the data connection but I am having problems finding a proxy that will let me do that (without installation).
So I guess my questions are:
1. does anyone know of a content filtering proxy that will allow me to sign up and pay for an account to block pornography or do it for free?
OR
2. Does anyone have a program to install that will allow me to do this some other way?
Thanks for your help
How about Cilice?

not sure if its compatible with the cell phone, but have you tried to set your dns to opendns.com. I use them as my DNS provider at home (they are free) and you can control what is available...
What are you doing that makes you need a content filter?

I like the cilice idea - very humorous. But seriously, as blancmik points out I would recommend using opendns. It's free to setup. Usage depends on how you browse the Internet. If you're browsing via WiFi from home, then you can configure your router to use OpenDNS, and manage your settings from there. Most likely your IP won't change too frequently so you may get away without bothering over your dynamic IP address. But I'd also recommend using the OpenDNS Updater software on your home PC, along with the free service DNS-O-Matic. That way as your WAN IP changes from your service provider, you can still browse using your OpenDNS filtering.
But if you're using your device on your carriers data plan, then your IP could change more frequently. It's a little trickier because I'm not sure if a dynamic DNS updater application exists for Windows Mobile. So when your IP changes you'd have to either manually update your free OpenDNS account. Or update your DNS-O-Matic account. Doable, but it would be annoying.
If you are on T-mobile you can activate the WebGuard and that will filter all adult themed content. It is done server side before the data reaches your phone so that could be an option for you.

Is there a way to force user use Always on VPN connection on 6T phone?

Hi friends, i try to secure my children phones from accessing not wonted sites. At home i configured mikrotik router so there is no way to bypass restrictions. But i cannot control what they access from mobile network.
The ideal way would be to connect phone to home VPN . Is there a way to force phone use VPN so user could not just switch it off?
In that case all home network rules and restrictions would work.
If you have some ideas about it, please share.
P.S. I did it recently when noticed that 8 year old neighbor children are watching porn...
I never tried it, but you could check if "Multiple users" gives you the chance to create a low privileged user which could maybe not edit network/vpn/dns settings?
Maybe you could setup the main accounts &co from the admin user and secure it with your fingerprint, then grant your childs just the "guest" user access?
Maybe give it a try and check what those users (a new one you create or the guest one) are allowed to do and if that achieves your objective

My mother utilized Norton Family to limit what could be seen and not seen. You can also utilize the built in family link ability from google to block searches on google and app store. Link for reference: https://protectyoungeyes.com/content/android-parental-controls-complete-guide-parents/
As far as what you are asking, you could use adguard to create the persistent VPN and use their family dns set up. Once done you can always use an app locker to lock the app settings and the app itself so it can't be uninstalled.
maybe you can test an app locker. with it, they can't stop the app vpn if they haven't the code lock

You can use an APP locker to lock the settings.
If you can't access the settings you can't turn it off.

Try private dns: dns-family.adguard.com
Read here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/adguard.com/en/blog/adguard-dns-announcement/amp.html
One problem with the "lock the VPN settings" is that the VPN swithes off fairly randomly. On my phone, I set up a VPN using my home router, and connect to it while on mobile. But at random points in the day it disconnects. It's necessary to go back into VPN settings to turn it back on...

I already use opendns, it blocks everything.
I do not see option to add just dns in android. Child just installs some vpn app or connects to some wifi and restrictions does not work.
On other hand if phone is connected to home vpn, there is no way to bypass it.
My microtik bloks all proxy, vpn and routes dns to opendns.
thanks for app locker suggestion. will try it

Pihole problem

Hello there!I ve just installed pihole to my raspi to block ads on my lan.The thing is that I want to block ads only on some devices (mobile, smart tv,tablet). So I don't want to use it on my modem-router as default DNS.In a tutorial I saw that you can modify the connection through every device you want.So eg my wifi2.4 connection, modify the DNS from my tablet. If I understood correctly it says to use raspi's iner ip as DNS.so lets say 192.168.1.300.
The thing is that when I do this,I get no internet access on my tablet.Should I somehow add the modem DNS to the raspi?should I do something else?Any help will be so much appreciated..
EDIT:when on pc I change my DNS settings (lets say to the wifi connection) I get no difference..I still have Internet, but no Ad is filtered..I may doing something wrong..but i have no idea what is that..
