New Owner, Gaming Performance? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I have been eyeing this phone since launch and finally decided to give it a try with a $330 Amazon deal. I'm a phone collector so this is my 4th phone. I love the size and pretty much no issues except gaming. I'm a Hill Climb 2 addict and this phone drops frames and stutters very bad. I am on the 8.1 Beta and have tried tweaking in developer options but not much change. Is this just a Beta software issue? My iPhone 7, Pixel XL, V20, and heck even my Mi Max with a SD652 is way more fluid. I know this phone has had software issues since launch but I'm hoping there is hope..if not I'd rather return it even though I love the form factor. Thanks for any advice!

Honestly I don't get this phone. Hardware spec-wise it should be screaming but it just doesn't preform. Reminds me of the cheap Chinese phones.

Try one of the custom kernels.
I just download hill climb racing 2 and it ran flawlessly for me. I only did 3 a, but I didn't notice anything wrong. I'm using ElementalX 2.0 kernel and everything is solid.

For me gamming is pretty much rock solid , i play mc versus alot with issues, although anything that has to do with vulkan will be chooppy, the driver is not optimized and still work in progress, if you want perfect vulkan performance stay on naugat. I am also on elementalx custom kernel with max overclocks.

I don't play many games.
I do play Real Racing 3.
No issues. All rendering including rear view mirror is rock solid.

Compared to my Nexus 6 which would struggle to even run Pokemon Go smooth all the time, this phone absolutely flies through anything that involves 3D.

All I know is that anything VR related, it runs well.

What does vulkan rendering have to do with real racing 3?

Huh? Real Racing renders various things depending on the speed of the hardware.
On lesser hardware the rearview mirrors don't get rendering.
The reflections in cars don't get rendered.
What I was saying is that all the above renders fine in RR3 on this device.

Updated Google Earth Impressions on S3

I just tried the new Google Earth in 3D mode on the S3 and it absolutely killed the phone. Not in a "oh my gawd my phone just crashed" way but in a "I can barely even rotate the camera because the phone can't keep up with the 3D graphics".
And this was with the 3D quality on it's lowest setting in Google World. I am actually pretty let down by this. So far it seems my Transformer Prime has much more 3D graphics capability than the S3. I'm not going off any certain score or anything but my own feeling when playing the games. Blood and Glory for one, seems to run a lot better on the prime than it does on the S3. The S3 just stutters every now and then and isn't as smooth overall.
wow, yeah, this is like playing crysis when it first came out. I've never used google earth that much though, it was always just a novelty to me.
i'm sure its more a programming issue than a hardware.
which version do you have?

Mine works fine, and I've pushed it to high graphics. . Are you sure it wasn't a network issue?

How long did you let it sit to download?
Using on wifi it works well.
I see some details still draw, but that doesn't effect scrolling, zooming, etc.
On hspa+, then it lags some with loading.
Not an issue with the phone like the op suggested.

Your emulation experience....what has it been like?

Mine has been wonderful. This is the only phone of mine that has ever ran Dreamcast games smoothly. In fact, the only issues I have are emulator related, not device related. With a GameKlip, its a wonder to use.
The only kernel that has given me smooth performance so far though is Franco Kernel. With all other kernels, I get frequent large dips in framerate on Reicast. On Franco Kernel, it works just fine. CM11s or AOSP, it doesn't matter.
I will say, though that the ROM and kernel I recommend overall is Slimsaber 9/12 and Franco Kernel r18. I miss some Cm11s touches, but until they fix all that needs to be fixed, I ain't switchin' back to a Cm11s based rom.
EDIT: I'm Currently testing Slimsaber 9/22 and Franco Kernel r20,. So far, so good
EDIT2: AAAUUGGHH NEVER MIND!!! GRAPHICAL ANOMALIES AND TOUCH ISSUES EVERYWHERE AFTER 3 DAYS OF USE! Going to try upgrading to the new 9/25 build to see if that fixes anything.
Other ROMs I've tried:
JEDI Open Source Project (r1.0): rock-solid, but not fully compatible with Franco Kernel, and the kernel that came with it gave me the same frequent large dips in framerate as every other kernel except for Franco Kernel when using Reicast.
CM11 Temasek Build (9/22, with Franco r20): Seemed like the scrolling was a little rough, butI I thought I was seeing things. Nope; scores in Antutu Benmark plummeted, even when everything was set to maximum performance. Also, it got really hot
Remember to always clean flash!
This is my Experience with several different emulators:
Dreamcast (Reicast): Near perfect. Tiny dips in framerate that don't affect the gameplay at all.
A tiny amount of missing textures and missing/glitchy sound effects. Most 3D games work fine (The only one that was unplayable was Zero Gunner 2, which ran quite smoothly but suffered from major graphical issues), all 2D games have major graphical issues, rendering them unplayable. Hoping that the Reicast developer fixes these issues, because it would be really nice to play Mars Matrix and SFIII, which both run smoothly but suffer from major graphical glitches that make them undecipherable.
SNES (SNES 9x EX+ Super Hyper Turbo Remix Deluxe): Beautiful. Fantastic. Amazing. Honestly it rivals an actual SNES.
N64 (Mupen64plus): Several graphical issues in several games, but smooth most of the time. Banjo Kazooie runs fantastically with practically zero graphical issues, which really surprised me. The only completely unplayable game was Conker's Bad Fur Day, which is a pain in the ass to emulate on any system. Most, if not all, of these issues can probably be fixed in updates to the emulator.
PS1 (FPse): It kinda......just works. And it's tons better that playing PS1 games on the PSP, and even rivals the Vita when used with a GameKlip. No complaints at all, really. Except it won't respond to input when playing Darius Gaiden (at least when I tried it. I think someone out there is deliberately making it difficult for me to play this game on the move. I couldn't even test if the music worked, because it wouldn't respond to button presses. I can tell you that the music doesn't work at all on the PSP, and even if you got it to work, you wouldn't be doing the game justice, anyway.)
Genesis/MegaDrive (MD.emu): So far, no significant issues. Speed is not 100% sometimes (and by that I mean the emulator runs a little faster than its supposed to where there would be slowdown on the console. Not a huge issue). Sound is not perfect, but surprisingly accurate; more so than most other emulators I've ever used on anything else. And Thunder Forcee IV doesn't crash mid-level like on a PSP
Have not tried NES, PC-Engine, or older consoles, because frankly I have plenty of other less powerful devices that can run these games just fine.
So, how have your emulation experiences been with the OPO? And what kernels/ROMs have you tried? I'd really like to know, going forward. I have a feeling that this device will be top tier for emulation for a while, even in the wake of 805 and 810 processors. It's remarkably well put together in both software and hardware, and unless someone releases a Snapdragon 805 or 810 based phone with a 1080p screen, little bloat, and expert hardware and software implementation, this device will remain relevant.

I didn't even know they existed. What a versatile little thing I might get one of those. Though I prefer something that mounts directly to the phone. It makes it easier to play on a bus or train; somewhere without a flat surface. And it doesn't have analog controls. But it still looks a joy to use
I see no reason why it shouldn't work. Unless I'm missing something.
The dualshock 4 controller and mount seems like a good option, but the controller itself is like $40

Well, I don't know about the DS4, but using the DS3 with a Gameklip is wonderful; I can actually play PS1 games that need 4 shoulder buttons
You can get genuine DS3s for $15-$25 on eBay.
You could also mount the DS2 to a GameKlip, I imagine. Though you'd need a PS2 to USB cable and you'd have at least a meter of wires dangling around you

I can imagine, though I have a modded PSVita for such things. Does PPSSPP allow you to use the DS3 to play Resistance: Retribution with the analog sticks like when you link your PSP to a PS3?
Drastic (DS emu) runs full speed brilliantly. The only thing I don't like is that ever since Android 4.2 on every phone Wii remotes don't work anymore

Drastic is one of the best emulators I've ever used. Even DS emulators on PC don't run this perfect, last time I checked. It's awesome playing touch screen games using a capacitive screen.

Heh...don't get me wrong. I physically collect for every system I've listed in my OP and beyond. Its just a lot easier to play PS1, N64, and Dreamcast games when you have the controls nessesary. Not to mention, without 4 shoulder buttons, some games on the PS1, like Megaman Legends and Metal Gear Solid are a real pain in the ass to play, sometimes even unplayable.
That being said.....why can't most companies make a great d-pad any more? At least the DS3's is decent, but I want some Saturn level stuff.

Not to mentiom, it was an enormous leap of quality from all the other DS emulators that were around when it was released. Suddenly, DS emulation changed from a madman's dream into a to-good-to-be-true reality.

What about PPSSPP? LCS was so laggy on my OnePlus One I'm so disappointed

Bad gaming performance compared to N5

Hey just wanted to know if anyone was experiencing lag in games. I turned off all game options in package disabler pro and it fixed the brightness issue but still having FPS issues. I play Order and Chaos 2 and on my Note 5 it performs beautiful, on this phone it's laggy and choppy. I can't figure out if it's a graphic issue, optimization issue, or a network issue with this phone. Please any input is greately appreciated!
Probably a Gameloft issue. I always loved Order and Chaos but their device support is crazy. The SD 820 should be a best. But even on the LG G4 with the 808 last gen, tons of games had issues playing. I know Mortal Kombat was one that was so unplayable until several updates later. On the G4 there was a Game Optimizer or something in battery settings if I remember.
Also check Samsungs new Gameplay mode or whatever it's called. It's an overlay that could be causing slowdowns.
I'm totally getting the same vibe from the gaming performance of this phone. A good example is the recently released Miitomo game. On my Nexus 6P and my boyfriends Droid Turbo, the game runs smoothly. However, on my S7 Edge it stutters and lags in a way that resembles missing animations or frames. It's pretty noticeable and it does not go away no matter what I do. I uploaded a video of this on YouTube and plan on showing a couple more games and apps that similar performance dips when it comes to graphics...
Smacky cars is the same way.
TBH it looks like a frame rate limiter.
It appears to be pumping like a PC game with a 60Hz refresh display and a GPU that can render 300+ FPS and is locked at 60Hz. It will jump like that. The hardware is probably too fast in all actuality. If it could be run without such a limit it would probably scream like a girl running from a gorilla.

[root & non-root fix] buttery smooth gaming & no fps drop [100% working]

Anyone else notice the lag when playing games?
Especially Blazblue, Bleach Brave Souls, 3D games, etc?
WELL youve found the right place here!
ROOT SOLUTION (100% LAG FREE)
Buttery JUST like an iphone 7! 100% LAG FREE
1)Install BatMan Rom in the Samsung S8 Rom development (Credits for making the rom!)
2)Install PekakaKernel
3) Root as Usual with magisk
4) After phone has been setup, download Kernel audiutor app
5) Before you play your game, set Minimum and Maximum both to 2314mhz for the BIG cpu & LITTLE cpu & GPU to min & max 572mhz
6) Click on governor and change to "Performance"
7) At the top of the settings page, click Apply on Boot
8)DONE! Enjoy your iphone buttery Gaming experience!
My lag in Bleach Brave souls and every other game has gone. So happy I made the decision to go custom rom & kernel!
NON-ROOT SOLUTION:
(decreases lag by ~40%!)
1)Install new launcher (nova) or anything light weight. Do not use Samsung's stock launcher.
2) Install Samsung's Game Tuner App & set your game settings to HW +5, and your resolution to however you like. I have mine on 100% as it feels snappier.
3) DONE!
you should notice 30-50% less lag and games will be actually be "playable" (remember to always play with game tuner app, with HW+5 setting) but you will still feel the lag here and there and in certain graphic intensive situations, it will still drop frame but its your best non-root solution!
if this worked for you, please donate me a beer or 2 thru my paypal at [email protected] cheers!
Same here man. Even a game as simple as the Tsum tsum game lags. My wife ain't happy about that as her iphone had no issues with games.

Eg I'm playing bleach, when skills are used the phone lags like an iPhone 4. Now thus is a powerful device it should not lag lag like this.
Have expiremented with game launcher, high performance mode different resolutions, etc to no avail.

I would say when it comes to apps specially gaming give at least a month before updates for them start rolling out. Most of them aren't optimised for the Galaxy S8. Once updates start rolling out i believe the experience will get a whole lot smoother.
anybody plays Mobile Legends?
my problem is the game isn't smooth.
there's constantly lag/delay.
I've tried downloading Package Disabler Pro, and disabled GamePad & Game Services.
it did make my game smoother, but the lag/delay still can be felt.
You can really notice the difference when you play something on iOS then play on this phone. Marvel Contest of champions is my go to game. Open that game on this phone and on an iPhone, not onlky does the iphone open is much faster, going through the menus is a breeze.
Tsum Tsum lags on this phone as well compared to the iphone and so does subway surfers. This is pretty pathetic with suppose top of the line specs.
Same here. Playing Fifa Mobile and it lags. This is really frustrating. Such a device and than this. Even on my old huawei p9 no lags. Anybody found a solution?

No, Mali g71 is already supported on Mate9/P10, while Adreno 540 on non Samsung device already runs Riptide Renegade at 2k ultra settings and 60fps for an hour!
The SoC is clearly crippled on the s8 for battery score, high performance mode is BS, you really can do nothing before root to fix it, believe me I have been trying on my friends s8
I haven't had any such problems and I play marvel contest of champions and star wars force arena.
Not a hint lag or slowdown hardwear wise.

No lag on mine either. Whether gaming or during anything. Phone is extremely fast.
Another thing, Just play
Skyforce reloaded on an exynos S8 vs s821 device to see the much inferior graphics, Mali's support is not great
I have severe problems playing Hearthstone. It sometimes doesn't register clicks and freezes for a couple of seconds.
I have no problems with lag, but I do with crashing. Bleach Brave Souls is constantly crashing. Froze game launcher, no launcher.

High performance mode doesn't make any changes to the cpu or gpu, sadly - only display resolution, brightness, etc. g71 is on mate9/p10, but with less cores = less heat. Also only Samsung goes extreme to gain a little more battery life. Sad as in reality you pay so much for super high end phone and the games play worse vs 3 years old phones. This is unacceptable, but Samsung gets away with it every years and keep doing it.
I think anyone posting here should make the distinction of they have exynos or s835 s8, the exynos version is just pathetic in running any game and if it runs good initially just play 5 minutes before it goes to hell, a phone with such hype and raving reviews should not be given a blind eye about this, it's inexcusable including the UI which lags in every corner
I just hope the s835 version runs things better (I know the UK doesnt)

Considering the games you listed are all just simple 2D games it should run them easy and battery is gonna last a long time.

What if those games just can't see 18:9 and are hardcoded to run in 1280x720? And when stretched they stutter somehow?
another example is RR3 which throttles to 18fps often which is way too low for such powerful 821

Well, you basically choose in which aspect ratio you wanna play games that don't support 18:9.
You can choose the usual default format 16:9 (with black left and right borders), optimized format 16.7:9 (with small left and right black borders) or 18:9 (fullscreen). It basically crops the games window to your liking. Really easy to set up and works like a charm.
Most games don't support 18:9 yet, only some new ones do, but i play pretty much all of them in 18:9 np. Performance is the same in either of those ratios, i'm pretty sure, as it only crops the image.
If a game is hard-coded to lower resolution then i'm pretty sure it plays at that resolution and doesn't up-sample. I've played a cpl of games hard-coded to 1080p and they actually still looked great despite running on a 1440p screen. You can still choose aspect ratio tho.
I've had no issues. So far I've played Pokeymanz Go, Magikrap Jump, Devil Twins, Sailor Drops, TriggerKnight, Dungeon Vilage, Game Dev Story, Ninja Village, Plague Inc, Infectonator, Tales of Link with no issues. The only time I've managed to make this thing stutter is when streaming music over BT and the phone switches back and forth between wifi and mobile data a couple times (this happens on my way home in the afternoon. It picks up my 802.11ac, then I whip around a corner and it drops it, whip back and it picks it back up).
I've played King's Raid on lg g6 and its lag pretty bad, i did change resolution , battery saver and graphic quality but still lag big time.
Can any of u guys give it a try?
But other similar games run very smooth which is strange.
Thx

That's probably not weird considering it won't even install for me through Google Play. It's says it's not compatible with my phone.
Doesn't look like a demanding game so it's probably just not optimized.
They claim that in Mushroom Wars Space and Mushroom Wars 2 G6 is especially lagging. Could anyone prove this claim?
What about framed/2? they say G6 is snail laggish in this

I play this game on my LG G6 and I can confirm that it does lag like CRAZY! Especially BD Raid DAMN!!! Feels like its gonna blow. But everything else is super smooth. Weird thing is my Note7 Exynos 8890 runs Kings Raid on max settings super smooth.
I have zero lags. But I have my G6 pretty much debloated and I always disable the, "Game Battery Saver" option. I think that option makes a difference.
But I mostly only play racing games and COD games.

It seems it has problem with 2D games. My wife's G6 lags like crazy in Angry birds pop. I tried to force GPU rendering in developer settings, but didn't help. I even lowered game resolution in battery settings
No lag at all playing pes2018
Yes, it does lag, but only when charging and playing at full resolution. It also only charges at about 1000 miliamps when screen is on. Not a huge deal for me, but I do hope oreo update will fix this.
Mine has this weird thing where a game will be super smooth for about 5 seconds but goes choppy, then I have to pause and resume for it to go back to smooth for another 5s.
This mainly happens for me in RR3, Plague Inc, Beast Quest and a few others.
Must be a software issue as it's obviously capable enough hardware. Hope Oreo fixes this!
Can't deal with low frame rates!!
Anyone else had this issue?
For me every game is working quite well except Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes. Which I really like so it's quite annoying.
