Hey,anyone experienced too much heat.I was using the phone like usual that means some facebook,Youtube, google searches,WhatsApp,you know, usual stuff.I started noticing that the upper body of the phone was cold and the bottom part was barely touchable.Maybe i am exaggerating but it was really hot.Even the sides were hot.I haven't experienced this level of heat on any phone neither when i bought the g6.Besides the heat i have left my phone on the desk with 70% at night when i woke up it had 60%.Phone idle used 21% when i checked what ate the battery.Idk what is wrong with this phone and why it does this because it is a good phone,it has a great camera, great display and it works really fast.If the battery and the heat problem would be solved this phone would be perfect.Thank you!

No problem here. I use it similarly to you and have never had overheating, even after a couple of hours of Netflix among normal day to day use.

Mine overheats, too...and when it does, it eats battery like crazy.
I have a replacement on the way from my carrier, and since it seems like this is unusual for the phone, I'd suggest you get an exchange going too!
Just noticed today my phone has been warm to touch all morning, I'm going through apps that updated last night and nothing I can see that would cause heating up, seems to have updated... except maybe Youtube and Gmail.
Battery is telling me I have 2+hrs and discharging left at 89% lol... so whatever is draining it is causing the heat.
This is the first time I've had this issue so I assume is a program running in the backgroung causing it.

Figured it out.... OUTLOOK was causing the phone to overheat... I killed the process and within 2-3minutes the phone is back to cold again. :|
It'll always be due to a misbehaving app. Go to setting and check the battery usage per app.
My H870 is cold and has negligible idle drain.
Have anyone experience the phone heat up and drain battery after update to android 8.0

The only thing that drains my battery a lot is phone idle and android system.I will post a screenshot later of my battery usage.I don't do much though. My screen eats about 20% phone idle about 20% as well and android system like 7% the rest is just youtube facebook some games.I really don't know what to do.
I installed a temperature monitoring app.I noticed that the battery is getting to 35C but some sensors are getting up to 45C.I do not know why.

I checked my battery monitor widget today am noticed something very strange. It showed me 40% charged when I was sure it was only 35% charged before I went bed! WTF did it charge itself? As you can see from the screenshots the phone was not on charge and was awake for most of the night which has never happened before. I have not installed any new apps in the last few days I have never seen this before on any of my android phones over the years. After 1 month of using the note this is the first glitch i've noticed (if it is a glitch). I am on stock LA4.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this happened?
I'm not complaining ( wish it happened every night!) just curious.
I have noticed the same strange thing with ICS.
did you try pinching your arm?

It is probably/maybe your battery stats that was not exactly "right" and might "recalibrate" your battery stats to the true value.
The simplest answer is always the true one: It is having trouble reading your battery right. Happens with mine too sometimes.
LOL I had the same thing happened to me.
First day with my note. And so far I am loving it.(despite colour rendering issues , and a very lagging stock keyboard)

Maybe the phones are evolving and learning to use the sensor on the Front to charge itself lol

This has happened to me several times already since the Galaxy S days.. sometimes after a reboot the battery looses 50% and slowly charges back up its quite funny and strange, never happened to my note though.
What do you think happens if some of the services is not needed anymore and stopes relaying, the battery % estimation will go up.

Wtf are you talking about? That's not any kind of estimate of lifetime, that's a report on amount of energy left. And in this case, specifically, a bug in it's reading.

You need to review your facts make a bit more research, the report is based on the fact that how many apps and services are you using, say if the wifi is on, it will show you certain %, however if you turn it off will report you that it has increased, depending on the running apps and services how much battery is left, my laptop does it all the time, unless you are living in pre Smart Battery Meter era.
I have to agree that if the % relies on the voltage (as I am sure it must do to some extent, but I am only guessing), stopping heavy services will allow the voltage to increase and the app may see that as a gain.
Alternatively we have discovered Samsung's secret OTA charging method! This explains why some phones have terrible battery life, they are being sucked dry by nearby 'Vampire Notes'!
Now, if we could just work out how we could charge all Notes by sucking iPhones dry ....

Battery is trolling
The Galaxy Note battery is a three terminals battery. So I think that the % state of charge of this battery is directly calculated from its output voltage.
The voltage decrease as the charge decrease, so it is possible to evaluate the residual charge in the battery. This is not a very precise method but it is quite simple to implement.
After a high current drain there is what is called a ''voltage recovery'', the battery voltage increase slowly a little bit as the current is stopped. So you may think that the battery get back energy, but unfortunately it is only an artifact.
Yesterday I showed you all how my battery indicated that it had charged itself.
So guess what folks today when I checked the complete opposite happened!!
Again as you can see it went from 48% just before I went to sleep only to wake up to a dead phone (switched off). Upon rebooting it showed only 9% !!
Now I can cope with it going up but going down is not good.
Hope its not a hardware problem and just a faulty battery.
lets see what happens tomorrow maybe it will explode!
I'm an EE (election engineering) student. Michel_7 is right. Lithium ion batteries experience a voltage sag during high current draws. Afterwards there is some rebound, both as the battery cools if over temp, and with a period of lower activity. This is in part due to the fact that batteries have internal resistance, and as they supply power, they also dissipate some internally. This is of squared proportion to the current drawn. IE current^2 * resistance. Battery resistance constant, so the more power the phone uses, the more the battery does. This is what heats up the battery.

Finally got around to sticking my SIM card into my 6P and decided to leave it off the charger over night to see how much battery percentage it would take away. I fell asleep with the battery at 55% and awoke with it around 30%. Looking at the battery usage, cell standby is consuming more of the battery than anything else. I've seen this bug in previous versions of Android, but have not heard anything about it with 6.0. Is my phone bad?
I'm on Verizon if that matters at all.

Without posting screenshots of your battery nobody can help you. There must be something running that causes the drain.
Can you solve the problem??? I have the same issue in my Nexus 6p...
i thought cell standby was literally an indication that your device is not active. i think something else is draining your battery. you'd be better of installing a battery manager such as GSAM to identify your cause.

40°C is normal if you use the device while it's charging, it usually hovers around the high 30's. If it's reaching 40 without the charger, then something is probably ramping up the CPU.

Me too. I took my phone off the charger, and by 9:00 I was at 75%, when normally I'm not at that until late afternoon. Battery monitor in settings showed an abnormally high usage for both Facebook and Messenger. Glad to see it isn't just me. On 20s since the OTA.
Wow I did not expected to see this many people with the problem, something must be wrong, I believe is facebook.
Let me elaborate. As you can see in my screenshot, facebook and systems services shows the higher battery consumption so I unistalled facebook just before going to sleep (for the system services I did nothing because I dont have root so couldnt install wakelook detector). I went to sleep at 87% and when I woke up after 6 hours the level was still 87. I recommend unistall facebook and see if it works for you

If it's staying that temp while being used (and charging simultaneously), you'd need to factor in the temperature of your environment. Some people are in warm/hot areas, then others are in cold regions.

I have been trying to find a solution to my problem from quite sometime now.
When ever the battery percentage goes below 30% it suddenly drops to 15% and shuts off the phone in 10seconds or so. It happens very quickly.
I don't think this is due to some software as i have tried almost all stock roms as well as custom roms.
Battery drops insanely fast! Anyone else facing this too?

Still love my essential after 1.5 years but been having a few issues lately:
First there is this blue spot that appeared on my screen last month
Second i'm experiencing serious battery issues : battery drains super quickly and often shut down phone around 50%. A few months ago I had excellent battery life (whole day without needing to charge), even on latest Android 10 (stock non rooted). I tried a few things including a factory reset without any success...
Screen issue I can live with but battery no... so I ordered a battery from aliexpress and prepare mentally for the repair with this video . Any further advice?
My essential was refurbished so it may explain the short battery life but I am wondering if alot of ph1 owners still run fine on original battery after 2 years? Mine was also dropped in water 6 months ago but without immediate issues but could be related to recent problems I am facing now
Anyhow, would really like to rock this phone at least 6 more months!
Mine is original bought from Amazon deal 1 1/2 years ago. The battery is still great. Fully charged at 9:30pm, next morning at 6:00am, the battery is 97%.
Phone never got dropped or water damage. I took good care of it, and hoping I can use it until Black Friday this year.
It sounds like @chanh2018 doesn't charge the phone way past when it's full. The PH-1 is one of the (many) devices that do not stop charging and draw from the charger when full.
If your use of the phone is different, the device gets run down then fully charged repetitively, then the wear on your battery will be higher. These comparisons are not really valid because of people's different habits.
My PH-1 battery is in good shape, even though it spends a silly amount of time on a charger. I use a Magisk adjacent (there is a module, also an app but I install by script) project called Advanced Charging Controller (ACC). When the upper charge level is reached, on the PH-1, it stops charging and discharges to the lower set-point. On a normal day, that range is 70%-80%. If I'm using the screen for a long period, like navigation, the same is 40%-41%.
I've done something similar since my N6 and have had little battery trouble.
That makes sense - I'm always plugging my phone before going to bed and let it charge until the morning so that might explain my battery issue.
I thought it was smart enough to stop charging for a while when 100% was reached... I'll pay attention to that when I get my new battery!

There are many factors that influence battery condition. Factors like heat, both ambient and charging related, the speed of charging(e.g. quick vrs trickle), the depth of discharge/charge. An in depth writing on the subject is available at the battery university.

Another possibility is that there is some current leakage due to moisture maybe via dendritic growth which could cause current to leak after dendrites have had time to grow.
(As you dropped in water and/or due to reconditioning work leaving residue on PCB dendrites is more likely to occur as rework normally use no clean soldiering products & likely less clean working methods than factory)

Could be battery failing (not sure how those battery apps calculate rating) though I'd also be looking at a recent app update being incompatible first for such sudden onset (any apps showing higher than normal battery usage) or maybe issue with your wifi/data
My PH-1 is also 1.5 years old and is now having serious battery issues. About two months ago my phone went from "feeling normal" to losing about 3-4 hours of charge per day. On new years day my phone hit 50% and shut off. The phone was not hot at that time. Since that shut-off event my battery only lasts about a quarter of what it would as new.
It would be nice if Essential offered a service to replace the batteries for a fee. I would really like to see replaceable batteries come back in style.

For me accubattery said 45% and it really did feel like 45%! LOL
The battery i used was from amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T28KL8B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I did not do any research on the battery. it was the only one i could find that would get here quickly. So far it is working fine, but time will be the true judge.
main videos to use is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCKxAQXdTJ8&t=618s
the main guide to use is:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Essential+Phone+Battery+Replacement/123496
The video is good in that it shows the heat gun to use and how to use it. The only downside to the video is they give the impression that the suction does more than it really does. (this is where the guide below comes in) For me it was a mix of suction cup and very light prying.
The guide is by iFixit and it is very helpful. IMPORTANT: DO NOT THE IFIXIT YOUTUBE VIDEO, IT IS NO GOOD!
The iFixit guide shows you where to make your initial tool insertion (i used a playing card edge) and how deep you actually have to play with around the edges. I also did not use scalpels like they do in the guide. I used only playing cards as it is MUCH safer when going around the edges. The playing cards can cut the adhesive, but will not cut the screen substrate. WARNING: THE PLAYING CARDS CAN STILL LIFT THE SUBSTRATE IF YOU GET TOO AGGRESSIVE, THEY JUST CANNOT CUT IT. BE CAREFUL AS YOU CAN STILL CAUSE DAMAGE.
In summary, the approach is a mix of heatgun and suction cup with playing cards around the edges. Take your time. It took me about 30 mins to get the screen off. After that it is super easy, just be patient.
I'll gladly answer any questions you might have.
Good Luck,
JD
Great! Thanks much for taking the time to share such detailed info.
I think that I will wait a little longer until my battery gets worse but I have bookmarked your references...
I also changed my battery last weekend but used a combination of guitar picks / scalpel / playing cards to decouple the screen after heating the edges with hairdryer.
Result : I damaged my screen so I prime ordered a new one for 80$ CAD. Once connected, I used b7000 glue carefully on the frame edges and put the phone under a big book for 24h.
Phone now feels like new and I hope it for last a while...
