I've had a Wear 24 for about three weeks. Yesterday, for the first time, I noticed an icon in the settings dropdown (next to the Bluetooth and wifi indicators) that looked like a sim card with a line struck through it. This icon had never appeared before. Perhaps coincidentally, yesterday was also my best battery life day since I got the watch. While the icon was present, I also saw little arrows next to the Bluetooth symbol indicating upload/download activity.
Today, that icon is gone and so are the arrows (and battery life is worse, though I'm using a different watch face, so who knows?).
Cellular connectivity is switched off and I've never activated the watch on the VZW network. Anyone understand what's up? Thanks.

The first wear 24 I got had that icon permanently. Something was wrong with the sim card/tray. I returned it and got a new one. My guess is you have a slightly loose or defective sim slot or card...
I disabled sim and run in airplane mode all the time. Never activated. Always see that icon. Assumed because I disabled all the Verizon network stuff. Seeing roughly 22h battery life
I see it, too. I disabled the SIM in SIM Info, and the icon appeared and has stayed. Get pretty good battery life as a result.

When I go to the SIM Info app, I see a permission request that doesn't do anything when I touch it. What did you disable and where so that the icon appears and battery life improves?

Has anyone else experienced this. It just started happening this past weekend. Before, the EVDO icon in the top bar would be greyed out (since the ROM update) when the connection was not active. But since last Friday it just stays 'white'. At first I was worried that the connection was stuck on active but there was not noticeable affect on my battery life. I'm not sure if there was a change in the Verizon network that has affected the indicator. I actually, replaced my phone this morning (for another reason), and noticed that the indicator is still 'white'.
there was a program I installed once that caused this probelm, but I cant remember the name of it for the life of me.
~mike
The thing is that even with my new phone and the new ROM, the arrows would not grey out. Anyways, doesn't seem to affect the battery life, but it does sometimes disconnect, whereas before, the direct-push would keep the connection open (but 'greyed-out').
The real problem now is that my direct-push no longer works. I've done a copule of hard resets and actually the arrows are now greyed out. But now the EVDO does not stay connected and my exchange e-mail is no longer pushed immediately to my phone. I've called Verizon and they got rid of their wireless data technical support, so now I can't get anyone to help me and all they do is push me to UTStarcom or Audiovox and they're not much help either. Any suggestions or help appreciated?
i had the same problem.. its because of the rom upgrade.. i used the ppckitchen and the arrows never gray out, when i used DCD's kitchen, it always grayed out.. i just believe its the rom itself... some people say its the phone skin but that is not true.. i tested that myself.

For those of you having battery issues I found a way to DRAMATICALLY improve the battery life.
I tried this and I have seen a huge improvement.
First things first, go into Settings> About Phone> Battery> Battery Use> Cell Standby. Assuming your phone has been on, or off the charger for ~10 minutes, it should show Time Without Signal at around 50%.
Next thing, press HOME, and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call"). After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.
Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl).
What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain.
Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl), and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).
Now your done, your TWS should drop dramatically, and you should experience much better battery life!
Note: You need to do this every time you reboot.
I wish there was a way to make an application to toggle this thing on and off so you don't have to do it every time you reboot the phone.
Going to try this for tomorrow and see how my battery life is. Seems silly that with all the customization HTC did to the OS they missed this detail.
seems weird; has anyone confirmed if this works?
-m
Just checked mine and it was already CDMA(auto).
btw for what it's worth, my EVO has been off the charger for ~2 hours, and the cell standby details just shows "time on: 2h 19m". Mine is also defaulting to 'CDMA auto (PRL)'
Perhaps a recentl prl update fixed this?
-m
Nice find though - the battery history tab (especially the all time tab) is awesome..
For instance, I've been seeing my GPS turn on and stay on while indoors.. according to these stats, the 'movies' app is the one that was using it the most..
-m
I found mine in CDMA already too
Mine was GSM my son's was on cdma, we both did the prl updates and both of us did the sd card update as well.
I guess some phones were on cdma by default some weren't.
Maybe thats why some people are calling other crazy for the battery drain.
thanks...interesting find...mine was on gsm. everytime i reboot?! damn.
Mine was set to CDMA with Cell standby of 48%.
mines was on gsm also..but i rebooted and it stood on cdma..it didnt default back
There is an app in the market called "network" that is basically a shortcut to this menu.

You could just use spare parts from the market place it shows you all of that
Mine was on GSM. I'll see if my battery life is any better tomorrow.
Mine was set to GSM. The phone came from Google I/O so maybe that was a bit different? I'm excited to see how this improves it! If it does...good find! If not...still probably a good thing to change!
Thank you so much for this, it seemed to fix my sporadic signal issue!!!!
just changed mine to CDMA thanks

Thanks for the tip...Mine was set to GSM.
Mine was already set to CDMA auto (prl). I saw another option was for CDMA only. I wonder if there would be any difference with that selected?
I have tried settings
wireless & networks
mobile network settings
network operators
Search networks & select Automatically is greyed out and doesnt work
Here is what I did to get it working
1.click phone then press *#*#4636#*#*
2.click on phone information
3.scroll down and click on wcdma preferred
4.click gsm only
5.hit back until you get out and there you go
Down side is every time you reboot you have to do all over again. If any one else knows a better way It would be greatly appreciated.
Mine stays on 3G. I tried this a few days ago using Anycut to create a shortcut to "phone info" and I had NO luck there either.

My Phone is rooted so maybe thats why, or possibly you need to type in
*#*#4636#*#* a little faster I tried 1st time and no luck but on second time worked like a charm.
I wish a direct dial shortcut would work but no luck either. I did get there manually though and yes you have to dial fast. The other thing I noticed is my icon just changes to a 3g with a check mark lik ehow it does if you turn off the always on feature. I suppose I could test with a network speed app to see if it really is on edge though.

I get the E from edge and have done speed test and confirm it is on edge..some times when you change the settings to GSM ONLY..just wait until the E (edge)pops up and if that doesnt work you have to change it back to wcdma preferred and then back to GSM ONLY it will work... and no need to exit out until you get edge on...I just did it and it took a few times but it works I promise.

It will help with battery life. 3G drains battery pretty fast, also depending on where you live and signal strengths, your signal can go back and forth from 3g to edge and draining your battery even faster. So if you leave on Edge will help out battery.
Also you can always add a widget to turn off your mobile data when connected to wifi.
Click on Menu -> Add + -> widget -> Settings -> from the list choose mobile data. You can now turn on or off your mobile data when not needed.
Thanks
There's a widget by curvefish.com on the Market that switches between edge and 3g. Haven't tried or tested. Android noob and a little worried to.
How's the battery life difference? I know on the HTC Tilt 2 there was a 4 - 6hr difference.
I think it is the way the SIM card is provisioned. I wasn't able to go to 2G only on my Backflip either even though some could.

I really like that extended controls..THANK YOU , but the TOGGLE DATA WIDGET that i was talking about will still let you send and receive SMS ans MMS..the original one cuts off the APN completely and no SMS or MMS. Thats the only reason i use it. While we on the subject of widgets..check out Audio Manager Pro.
I think I found a way to sustain battery life as much as my old WM phone. A combination of this Edge techniques and setting autokill up and ignore lists ... and removing polling apps (but everyone knows this) ... so the result is today I went into Edge mode with 9% battery left and 3 hours later it was still 9%. Seems really promising. Tonight I'll go to sleep and let you know how much it dropped while at rest (with APN on).
I also tested the Extended Controls APN button with respects to Edge and I was able to recieve SMS and MMS (but the picture portion of the MMS would not download until I activated the APN button). But I suspect leaving the APN on will not hurt your battery life as I had mine on and battery was rock solid (at least with Edge).
To save additional battery, I ditched Advanced Task Killer and went with "Task Manager" which also has a convenient kill widget. I also dumped the aiSystemWidget (WHICH I LOVE BY THE WAY) as it was constantly polling information and instead installed an app called "Android System Info" which is just as effective at displaying information about my system. Anyone else have an app like this that is light on memory (sorry for the hijack).
Sorry to ramble
I get about a loss of 1% per hour now with sync and apn on.

I agree with you 100% on the combination of this Edge techniques and setting autokill up and ignore lists ... and removing polling apps...I also have start up startup cleaner 2..and that does help out with boot up speed.
How is "Task Manager" different from Advanced Task Killer? I have the Pro version and love it....and I'm digging that Android System Info.
Plus I found this widget last night called Quick Boot, It will let you reboot, recovery mode of fast boot with 1 click ... Im lazy like that.

I have that issue as well, idk why it happens but I'll add it to the list of problems for when I call to get a replacement.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
That just happened to me today also. It switched from "H" to "E", then when I opened USA Today it FC-ed and the icon turned into a generic Android one like the app was on the SD card and unavailable (even though it's installed to phone) and then 5 more background apps that I didn't even know were running FC-ed (Amazon MP3, Finance, QuickOffice, something and then Facebook three times?) and the phone locked up. I was able to power off then back on, but data never came back even after waiting about 10 minutes until I powered off and on again. Quite odd.
I get the same issue where am connected to wifi and as soon as i walk away from it it doesnt connect back to the data network. I got a replacement phone coming so hopefully i dont have the same issue. Another thing is the random reboot and i get black screen a lot especially after rebooting
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I've had the issue, but each time it appears to be related to JuiceDefender not properly enabling the radio. If I shut JuiceDefender off, the connection comes back, although sometimes its just easier to airplane mode it and be done with it.
I called T-Mo about it, they said call about a week after the inital release date and see if they have a fix by then, there isnt enough information kept since it hasnt been officially released yet.
I'm having the same trouble. Are you guys on the new sim card? I popped in the new sim card and the tech told me to not use it and just save it. I noticed when I put the new sim card a notification of a new voicemail came on. I didn't have any voicemail.
Edit: I'm starting to have some serious data issues. I'll get cut off, but my phone will still show full bars and "H". I try the whole airplane thing and it still does nothing. I constantly get the "check network setting, try again or cancel". My market wont load, browser says "unable to connect." This is getting stupid. When I call T Mobile it always start working and then cuts off shorty after hanging up. I've never had this isssue before. I live in the middle of the city. Only 3G around here. Its getting annoying.
Guys I'm afraid that it might problem with the antenna placement. Holding the phone on the bottom half will drop me from 3 bars of "H" to 4 bars of "G", then it will bounce back up to 4 bars of "E". If left on a desk then it will remain at 3-4 bars of "H". I notice this especially at a place where I have low-mid signal, such as my school (reinforced concrete FTL). When I have a strong 4 bar signal, it usually won't drop all the way down to edge but I do loose a few bars. I hope a simple software issue is enough to reduce this effect. I might be being crazy paranoid but I'm definitely noticing a lower signal than on my G1.
Try holding the phone by the edges, then hold it in a normal grip and see if the signal strenght changes (Menu->settings->status->signal strength)
I just got off the phone with tmo and was told its a known issue with the network affecting about 10% of users. The issue started for me yesterday on my hd2. He also said they have people working on it. I asked if I could get my buyers remorse set back 14 more days to ensure the issue is not permanment but he said that they are no longer doing extentions. I'm sure if I get tranfered to retentions the answer would change. I hope.

Wow that's funny, my MYTOUCH does the same thing with airplane mode off/on. I also remember that the store demo g2 I played with last night had the voicemail icon in the notification bar, but when you pull the bar down, there's no option to connect and retrieve the voicemail. I found that even weirder since the phone comes preloaded with google voice.
Also experiencing the same issue here in Phoenix. Been having it since I got the phone on Monday.
I have been in an ongoing round of tech calls and will be having a follow-up with the tech who I spoke with last night... I've tried everything from APN resetting to swapping the SIM card to a total factory wipe -- nothing is changing this for me.
I *know* my neighborhood has full 3G access, but I am maxed out at 1 Mbps. (Before the factory wipe I was getting 0.35 Mbps.) If this doesn't change I may just return the phone and switch to Sprint to get the Epic 4G. I mean, I'm not getting HSPA+ coverage either way, and at least with the Samsung Galaxy S Pro I'd have a full 5-row qwerty...
>_<
Wow, this is really too bad. I was SO excited about this phone...

If this happens, try going to settings->wireless->mobile network->network operators and see if you get an "Error while searching for networks" error as I did.
Reset fixed for me too. But it makes me worry.
I'm on a brand new sim card (switched to TM from ATT). I'm having some data issues too. I talked to TM tech support and they reset my connection but that did nothing. Now they're going to their android techs to see whats up.
I'm on Rogers Canada and have their device.
Set up everything correctly by doing the setup and got an SMS notification that the wifi calling is active.
When I turn on wifi calling it says enabling for about 2 minutes and then it says enabled. However it doesn't actually work. I never get a wifi calling icon in status bar.
Called Rogers they said everything is good on their end.
Tired different wifi network and even a factory reset but no luck.
Any other suggestions?

Have you tried to test wifi calling? What kind of statusbar icon are you looking for? Just wondering whether it's really not working, or you are just not seeing it because the indication is subtle.
I was all ready to say "I have AT&T and enough dead spots at my house that I can verify it works well." But now that I am looking, I am seeing some strange behavior I have never noticed before.
First of all some terms / definitions. On the AT&T variant (Rogers might be different) you will get a special icon next to the "AT&T" in the notification bar, which is a little handset with a wifi icon, when you have an active wifi call. When you have wifi calling turned on, the normal wifi meter changes only slightly to one with a little + on it.
I had wifi off and toggled it on in order to see those icons so I could properly describe them here. I just had the normal wifi icon. I made a call, and it did not indicate it was using wifi calling. But after I hung up I had the wifi+ icon and the next call did indicate wifi calling. I repeated this process several times with the same result, even waiting 5-10 minutes to see if it became enabled on its own after some time. Now, since I always normally see the wifi+ icon anytime I happen to notice it, and I rarely make calls but frequently toggle wifi, there must be something else that triggers it. Sending a text seems to do it as well as a call. And a longer wait might do it also.
So, now that I have done some more thorough experimentation, it seems that there might be a little bug there. Or it might just be related to the particular wifi network I'm on right now.
Just tested it on my home wifi for comparison, and wifi calling came on as expected within a couple seconds of enabling wifi, which would probably explain why I never noticed this happening before.

Thank you for your reply.
According to Rogers I am supposed to get that WiFi icon that tells me WiFi calling is enabled but I never do. Sounds like I should have similar experience as you do.
I have a ticket open with them and we will see what they reply with next.
Even though I don't have the icon I tried a few things to make sure if it is working or not. One is turning on Airplane mode and enabling WiFi. Go into settings and it says WiFi calling is being enabled. This always takes about 2 minutes to turn on however calling never actually works. It's like something is blocking the WiFi connection but I've tried 4 different WiFi networks. It seems like you get that WiFi calling enabled right away after connecting to WiFI.
