This phone is bad to the bone. Now, with this momentum built up around the "who will make the better cheapster, since google killed the nexus" it fails to deliver. I had all the nexus phones and even another one from the android one project. This is not good and nokia should acknowledge it. They are not able to make the only proprietary app (yes the camera) which is different on each android one phone since google doesn't provide api for the cheap hardware, the phone even crashes sometimes, the app is so bad.
Phone is laggy on a constant snappy animations level. Gboard lags 90% of the time. Battery drains superfast, and heats up like an oven (warning appears) while listening to gpm and using waze.
And no, no "rogue" or battery hog apps installed or whatnot. Touch is unresponsive. The phone is like two weeks old and I'm thinking of returning it. This is sad, I bought it to support an old company from my childhood ...
I understand that snapdragon scaled down a processor to fool the cheap and google didn't scaled down android for some reason, but there is a difference between a slow phone and a laggy snappy annoying someting.
My two cents for people who are trying to find a "new nexus" is to avoid it at all costs. This phone might work for an older family member who just got familiar with android. But as I told, if you're looking for a new nexus, forget it.
I have the exact opposite experience than strapabiro. My Nokia 6.1 hasn't shown me any lag at all. In two months I had to reboot one time. The unresponsive touch may be caused by a screen protector. I saw this on another phone (non-Nokia). As for battery drain, I did experience this issue but the fix was easy. I turned off the tap to wake and whatever they call it when it wakes up when you pick it up. I found the phone was waking up all the time when it was in my pocket. Since turning that off I can run two days easy before having to charge it. The SD630 processor is plenty fast when you are not running a skin over Android like Samsung, LG, etc. The weakest thing about the phone is the camera. If you use your phone's camera all the time this may not be the phone for you.
Indeed I have a screen protector, but I had one on every other phone. This lift to wake up thingy is disabled for me also since I observed the false wakeups on day 0. I will try with the tap to wake up too. Btw the custom launcher isn't eating more battery than the stock since they disabled the stock when they installed the bloat one and even some oem have better launcher since lately google hires anyone who can turn on a pc, but that's not our case. Yes the camera thing is very sad and bad advertising for Zeiss. I'm not here for trashtalk. Anyways based on the fact that the phone is out since February and it's popularity is really low here, I'm not anticipating a bright future for nokia's second coming. I'd really like this phone to work honestly, design is awesome, they should do something under the hood ...
I'm another unsatisfied customer coming from a Nexus background. Stuttering audio on bluetooth and then this update fiasco. Always the provider, country or google's fault and nothing Nokia can do. Cheap phone cheaper customer service.
Not fast at all. Its a laggy device. Inspite of having sd 630, it works like sd 212. I feel software is the main reason for such a laggy performance
for the specs its got a lot of lag. doesnt feel like the rom is optimized.
Wow. I am surprised about all the negative comments. Which versions are having lag? I have a TA-1068 (for 2 months so far) and have yet to experience any lag.

Mine 6.1 32/3 GB model runs smooth. After all updates up to july security patch.
The only thing i hate about the phone is the worthless camera app. It is slow and laggie. On the TA-1043..

64/4 version and it's very responsive. Best phone I've had for years. Had it for 3 weeks now, haven't had a single hang, or crashed app, I think I've only rebooted once. Battery life is great too.

Just an observation which I'm pretty sure is software related. The same chipset with less ram is in my brother's moto g and there's no perceivable lag on that phone. An occasional stutter here and there is understandable but damn this thing slows way down. My guess is a dirty non optimized Sharp rom. Really, this thing should fly!
Something I noticed when comparing the Moto G with the Crystal on CPU-Z is Motorola has the CPU governor set to "Interactive" whereas the Crystal is set to "Ondemand"
Also you can't use ART on this phone which is a bummer because it definitely would help!
Also I've disabled Clip Now, Clip Now Setting, and Lumen toolbar so they're not running in the background.
I have too noticed some lag. It is most apparent for me when I switch apps quickly and open Hangouts to send a message and Swiftkey will not recognize any taps for about 20 seconds or so, and when I enter my PIN. I see more stuttering on the Crystal while scrolling through my Play apps while installing updates than what I did with my Optimus F3 that has a dual-core. It also was odd that ART is not available since it is with KK.
It looks like there is some kind of update for the Softbank version here http://www.softbank.jp/mobile/info/personal/software/20140917-01/ , so it might be making the rounds in carrier testing in the US. In Chrome's translation of the Japanese on the website it says that the Crystal will be supported for 3 years, so that looks nice.
As useful as Clip Now is, regular screenshots might be more efficient. I saw the app Greenify on the side-bar here on XDA, checked it out, and it works well to save battery life. It essentially "hibernates" apps and stops them from running in the background.
After reading the specs on this device awhile back, what you're describing isn't really a surprise.......which is probably why I won't purchase unless the Japanese version comes to the US.

Guys, I've lost count on how many smartphones & tablets I've had in past 8 years. Prior to getting the 306SH I was carrying a Note 3 from Tmobile which was rooted with a tweaked ROM and that sucker was F A S T! For most tasks I find my Sharp to be just as fast and in some cases FASTER than my former Note 3!
Yes, I uninstalled and disabled some apps I never use, like Drive, Google Play Books and Google Play Newsstand.
Bottom Line: Numbers don't always tell the truth when it comes to real life.

I think this is really nice phone. Not just the looks, but it performs quite well too.
I have not experienced any lag, so far, installed about 30 apps, took pictures, played music...
The music sounds pretty good coming out of the speakers too! Oh, I did install Apollo Music Player, as I did not see "stock" player there, only g-Music... As with all Androids, I think Greenify is a must-have app; even though we do not have root yet, it kills (user) apps that try to constantly run in background (FB, Skype, etc..).
After the first full charge yesterday when I bought it, right now is down to about 28%, so that's 1 day and 2 hours on battery. Not bad.
The wife loves it, mainly because of the unique design, but like the performance too; it's an upgrade for her aging Epic 4G Touch...
So far so good!

just faster than your Note 3, which isn't slightly surprising. Touchwiz ruins Android on many levels. Aside from that the fact remains it should run a near stock version of Android faster and smother than it does. Coming from a Nexus 4 I know what fast is.
I have both the Crystal and a Moto G. They perform exactly the same to me - both are pretty responsive and although I can get both to lag a little bit if I really try, it is pretty good considering the hardware.. I wonder if you might have some apps that are slowing things down for you?
I've had the Sprint prepaid and Boost versions of this phone. Texting becomes annoying with any keyboard I am using because touch and response doesn't always match up for some reason. Just can't get it right on this phone. This lag you speak of I definitely experienced. It happens most often when the battery is low under 15%. Try it out for yourself. You'll notice that's when the lag comes out to play. I mean its still operatable so can't complain too much but it's definitely noticeable. Must be a hidden power save feature. With that being said I've noticed the lag other times when too many apps are open in recents or the phone's been being used to long. Memory problem? Idk.
I have absolutely no lag on this phone what so ever. Sorry to those that are experiencing that, return it for a warranty replacement. I use this phone a lot, and it never slows down. I have been playing asphalt 8 with the graphics settings cranked up and no lag. You guys just got bad models, it happens with every manufacturer. My last phone was the lg optimus f7, I had to return it 4 times before I got one that was good.

9 Days ago, I made the decision to switch networks due to Sprint's inability to handle MMS, data, signal, calls, or anything else. I walked into a T-Mobile store, and after a brief credit check, I was told I can choose any phone I'd like. My original intent was to hang onto my Nexus 5, which I absolutely loved, but I was told I was required to get a new phone. I wasn't exactly upset knowing I'd be getting a new phone, so I walked over to the displays and struggled for over 20 minutes trying to decide which phone to get. I eventually whittled my choices down to two phones. The LG G3 and the HTC One M9. After a bit of research and test driving, I chose the HTC One M9.
It is a seriously nice phone. The materials used to craft this baby are top notch, and definitely give the impression of quality. I very much like the way it looks and sounds, and even though it could be unwieldy to hold (slippery), I got around that issue by slapping a nice Spigen case on it. HTC's Uh Oh protection is a nice touch and the specifications are equally as impressive, which helped sell this phone to me. The thought of a 64-bit 8-core CPU was exciting.
It's my first flagship phone; everything should be impressive. And yet, I'm kind of not impressed. My two main complaints about this phone are the button placement (I think having the power button and volume buttons on the same side of the phone and right next to each other is kind of silly, then again, my N5 wasn't like that, so I could just be used to that layout. ) and the performance. Yes, you heard me, the performance. I don't even care about the joke of a camera this thing has, it's really the performance of the cutting-edge octacore CPU that they slapped in this thing that really frustrates me. Out of the box, this phone comes underclocked due to overheating issues. That, to me, is downright laughable. Did anyone at HTC test this phone? A flagship device whose performance is throttled from the moment you turn it on. That's like buying a Corvette straight from the dealer, starting up the car and finding out that Chevy disabled two of the cylinders in the engine to ensure it didn't overheat. It's not just the thought of this that bugs me, the performance of the phone is actually terrible at times. My Nexus 5, given it was running a 5.1.1 ROM, was butter smooth in all but the most complicated of situations. This phone, however, limited to a paltry 1.5GHz and another cluster that is slow to wake up and help out, struggles with some truly mundane tasks. For example, swiping to my Google Now Cards is laggy, loading Google Messenger is choppy and slow. Scrolling, in general, is almost never smooth. I've tried different ROMs, Kernels, and governors but can never really find a nice balance between performance and battery life. The CPU is ALWAYS up to something too. Even when the screen is off. My Nexus 5 would achieve, regularly, about 70-75% Deep Sleep throughout the course of a day. It sipped battery. This phone achieves, on a normal day, about 60-65%. Thankfully it has a larger battery than the N5, otherwise I seriously doubt it'd last as long.
Overall it's been bittersweet experience. I really like this phone, I want to love it, but I can't. I realize that this device is still in its infancy and HTC can roll out updates to hopefully iron out some of these problems. I also realize that the community for this phone is also in its infancy, and that down the road, there may be terrific alternatives to Sense 7 and the Stock Kernel. But I have 5 days left, and the idea of swapping this phone out for something better is slowly starting to grow on me. I've been toying with the idea of getting an Xperia Z3 or LG G3 instead. It'll cost me $50 to swap the M9 out for a different phone. On the other hand, my mind is telling me to be patient and that it'll work out in time with this phone. So I turn to you. Anyone else share the same frustrations with me? What do you think I should do? Should I wait or should I swap this baby out for something else?
UPDATE June 8th 2015:
I went to the T-Mobile store the day after posting this. I researched and thought long and hard about the decision I had to make. After a while I came to the conclusion that I would be paying $50 (Restocking fee) to essentially downgrade to another device. In fact, the only other flagship device that even appeals to me at this point is the LG G4, which seems to be getting along as well as the S6 and One M9 have been (from what I've read). Thanks to recommendations from others in the community, I made some changes that have greatly improved my experience with this device. I'm still not a huge fan of Sense 7 nor am I astonished by the Camera's performance, but a new launcher restored much of the stock Android feel and an upcoming firmware update promises to improve the camera. Performance while multitasking is fantastic and while there are a few hiccups here and there, I can't say my experience is any worse than what it was with my Nexus 5. The Battery life, a common complaint from others about this phone, is fantastic in my eyes. It's nice to sometimes forget about charging my phone at night, waking up the next morning and still having enough juice to get me into the afternoon.
Overall, I've only recently concluded that I did not give this device a fair chance for as long as I should've. Coming from my Nexus 5, the change was a bit of a shock. I suppose that played into my initial disappointment. I'm actually starting to fall in love with this phone. Compliments and exclamations of wonder and impact are common from others that I let check out my phone, even from die-hard iPhone fans, which is always nice. I figured that I should update this thread because I see the conversation still continues. No phone is without its flaws, my beloved N5 was hardly without its own. Many "flaws" are a matter of perspective. I'm confident I've made the right choice with this device, and I look forward to the bright future that lies in store for it (please God, give me an AOSP ROM).
ps. The 1.5 clock only applies to the A53 cores. I'm sure people more technically inclined and chime in and confirm this.
I've had nothing but smooth operation on this phone. I am on Leedroid at the moment, but was on international stock rom before and was just as smooth.
I'd be looking as to why you are experiencing the performance issues, and if you're not happy, I'm sure the consumer protection laws in the US allow you to return it for something else?

Yeah, I've noticed the lag when swiping to the goole now screen. I'm confident that performance will be better when they give us 5.1, which by then they'll have figured out how to best optimize S810. Best to test out your options, you might even want to consider the M8 which has GPE 5.1 ROMS ready for it. That phone performs and has excellent battery life.

Yeah I have (doesn't it only fix that off screen animation bug?). The lag when scrolling to the google now screen affects my M8 as well if I recall correctly.

I thought it reduced the over all RAM usage from the system over a prolonged period of time. I thought that might affect lag overall on the phone, but I could be mistaken. I haven't experienced any lag on my device yet so I was just throwing out ideas.
Have you tried rooting and putting leedroid on it. It's a beast. No lag. No stutter. Smooth
I never experienced any lags except when gaming during charging the battery with a speed charger.

Same, lag isn't a problem except for when using google now launcher and swiping to the left for the google now screen. It's minor, but annoying nonetheless. For the OP who was used to the Nexus 5's smoothness it's probably extremely noticeable.

True, I actually got rid of google now because it was annoying me every time my phone slipped out of my hand and started it. I still am hopeful knowing the m9 should get multiple updates in the future and run 5.1.

Wont make a difference, its the phone to blame to for now. I got 2 devices both same problems at times and tried everything for it, the roms run fine but battery life still bad and weird charging problems for me

still you are brute forcing the M9 into throttling its GPU this way and about the best thing on the M9 is actually gaming speed thanks to it's very powerful GPU
Coming from a M8, at first i was a little frustrated for the overheating and the camera of the M9. But then, neither the m7 or m8 were great cameras.
I read a lot of reviews and even started thinking of selling the M9 but swap for what? S6 ? God no, please, no more touchwiz. Lg,i had the lg3 and it was L(a)G and slow, much slower than the M8 (i know, different screen's resolution). So, in the end, i prefer keep the M9, the camera improve a lot with the update, and many more updates will come.
Then, there is sense 7, sense is one of my favourites android skins. Light, smart and very, very fast. I absolutely have no lag in M9 (all stock). And i use a lot blinkfeed, i missed it in any non Htc phone. And there is the boomsound, the touch to awake screen...
When you say you have lag with Google Now cards, I'm assuming you are using the Google Launcher. I have noticed some lag here and there with the Google launcher, but the stock Sense launcher performs admirably. It's quick and never seems to drop frames when gaming either. How did you leave the phone stock before you started flashing different ROMs to it? I think that may actually be the issue. Every review of the M9 has stated that the phone is smooth and HTC's software is better than ever. Messing with the software may be what's causing the poor experience.

I occassionally play a round of Boom Beach, Clash of Clans or Limbo while the phone is on the charger. Can you elaborate a bit on how this could "kill the battery"? Is it related to charging while the GPU is cranking up the thermals?

I'm using the stock Sense launcher and my phone is buttery smooth. While I don't use the Google Now Launcher, Google Now performs great on this phone.
All of the games that I play are also super smooth. Granted, I don't play games that demand a high frame rate, but those games that I do play are far smoother on this phone than my old M7.
The one issue I had with the phone was what seemed like spotty issues with wifi. I did a cache partition wipe yesterday and it seems to have helped the issue.

Overall I give this phone a four out of five. Im probably not the best judge however due to the fact I'm coming from a three year old device in the Samsung Galaxy relay 4g. After having said that though, battery life is great. I can get through a full day without charging. And that's moderate to heavy use with GPS. Virtual keyboard is awesome. I miss swpe but don't want to switch and lose predictive text functionality with hw keyboard. The hw keyboard is pretty small. I knew this going in but was still she'll shocked about it at first. I'm slowly getting used to it though. I like the scrolling functionality but the fact it doesn't work on every app and not in the same way is a deterrent. The buttons have a decent feel but I guess if they couldn't be any bigger I would of liked a spacing around them. But overall not horrible. I haven't used the camera much, but from what I've seen its lightyears ahead of what I'm used to. Even the crappie 2mp front facing camera is an upgrade from the relays 1.5(I think)mp. Anyhow, the priv seem like a pretty good next gen phone. I do agree that the price is way too high, however, especially without marshmallow.
5/5 … as a former Nexus 5 user, I wasn't aware how I missed an AMOLED screen and MicroSD support until I got the PRIV. The physical keyboard was the main reason (was curious, and I never had the G1), but the rest of the package is better than I hoped for. The OS is mostly stock with useful additions by BlackBerry. The January security update came a day before Google even announced it here. (And BBRY promised to keep delivering updates ASAP.) It's just the perfect device for me. The only thing I was missing in the beginning was wireless charging (I got the European model) … but I bought 2 original desktop stands (for the price of 1 noname wireless one!) and now this isn't a problem anymore. I'm looking forward to more awesome devices from BlackBerry running Android already…

I just got this phone yesterday and was disappointed at first. I guess using a Passport and Note 4 I was expecting more. However, I am enjoying this phone now! I do find the form factor to be great for my hands, which are small, because it is lightweight but sturdy. App download and install is a bit slow but I only got the update one day ago so maybe once it settles it'll get better. I really wish it had the Hub with swipe right and peek by swiping up slightly. That's all I have for now!
I love this phone.... My previous phone (Xperia Z) started failing so I searched all around my city until I was informed a local T-Mobile store had 1 in stock. I rushed to get it and I have to say it is epically legendary. I do however wish we could root it because I could use some of those extra features.

*=yes i used Android before... since 1.x on the first galaxy from samsung in 2009 so i guess i know how to manage apps and what to not install and i'm a *NIX system architect at work - but this phone is sometimes lagging without the cooling-down notification, without cpu's above 75%, on highest cpufreq, with and w/o AC, with and w/o sdcard and a lot of free RAM, and even after fastboot'ing and fullwipe before setting up most stuff, so i guess it could be the throughput of the internal flash or some missing optimizations...

*=yes i used Android before... since 1.x on the first galaxy from samsung in 2009 so i guess i know how to manage apps and what to not install and i'm a *NIX system architect at work - but this phone is sometimes lagging without the cooling-down notification, without cpu's above 75%, on highest cpufreq, with and w/o AC, with and w/o sdcard and a lot of free RAM, and even after fastboot'ing and fullwipe before setting up most stuff, so i guess it could be the throughput of the internal flash or some missing optimizations...

Yes, it does hang/lag. It heats up when we try to multitask. Else The phone is good. One more thing that is not upto mark> is the front camera.

This phone has been a huge dissapointment. It freezes frequently, the camera crashes constantly, and it's one sellingpoint, Android One, is a big lie. I'm getting updates with two or even three months delay.

It has been the opposite for me. System runs fluid at almost all times, camera is far better than I expected and works well, and Android updates have been coming every month so far.
What kind of software are you running?

Nothing out of the ordinary. Facebook (lite), Twitter, Instagram, Google Drive, Sync Pro, Sleep as Android, etc.
It think it depends on where in the world you live and which model you have. I have the TA-1068 and use it in the USA. I have the same experience with the phone as 3dcay. I don't know if it is the extra 1GB of RAM (4 vs 3), the lack of Chinese spyware, or what. The phone has been rock solid.
I own a TA 1016, has a great camera compared to my old XA1 Ultra (sold) even though this one has less megapixels, the phone is pretty quick (3gb variant) and runs pretty much everything I throw at it and it has a rock solid durability, I dropped it so many times and it holds up really well
All Rounder Phone for daily uses.

I was given this RN9 yesterday as a present (replacing a Pocophone F1 which broke). Got to say, I love this phone!
It's terrific! Took a bit of meddling to set it up the way I like (switching the stock launcher for CPL and stripping out a load of miui cruft) but the hardware is really lovely. Hoping to get a decent Gcam port, but the stock camera takes really nice photos, going by the handful of snaps I've taken today
NFC reader works perfectly (I'd read somewhere that it didn't actually have one, despite the specs claiming it does - mine, an international M2003J15SG, definitely does have NFC)
If anything, I prefer it to my old F1 - I haven't noticed any performance difference, seems lighter, several features the F1 missed (incl NFC), no notch
And incredible value - just under €180 for the 4/128gb version (or free if it's a birthday present ?)
Face unlock is as quick as the F1's ir unlock
Not seen a single ad in the UI either!

Charging doesn't seem the quickest, but it's an enormous battery to fill I guess

Damn this phone has some impressive battery life!! I have a 1+7 pro and this phone gives me way more sot with even more heavy use

Saying that, I played PUBG last evening with game turbo on and the battery really suffered. Played it just now without game turbo - still very playable but much more easy on the charge level
RN9 sure is a bang for your buck type of phone which makes you appreciate the extra features it boasts for it's price. Just don't expect flagship type of performance. It's still servicable for your daily needs.
It's good so far , I just switched from my broken Mi Mix 3 . the phone make me rock with his perfect battery and nice performance for such as under 180$ phone. yeah it's lovely
Coming from the Mi A1 so the speed upgrade is very much noticeable. Camera big big upgrade. Screen lovely. However I am disappointed that the reseller sold as Global but it's not, hardware wise. Got the -SS version without NFC running global ROM. That while NFC was one of the main reasons I opted for Note9 not Redmi 9
Also the lack of location based unlocking is annoying.
That said I use the phone mainly for browsing, messaging etc so I'll learn to live with it
Recommended with the strong advice to double check with reseller which exact version you're getting...
Edit: The following problem seems to be remedied in MIUI 12.0.7 update which is great but still, it has taken more than half a year since release that this dreadful problem finally get addressed. Still appreciated that they care about such cheap device.
(This was on a 3/64 GB model)
Overall, I think this phone has a very good value for it's price (stellar battery life, nice display, good SoC, good haptic feedback, multiple nice features), but the only gripe (a big one) I have is the performance issues. For usual tasks, it's okay for a mid-end chip, but sometimes it would just freeze up for so long (more than a minute for sure) that I would have to force restart which I find very irritating. (imagine chatting with your friend and you swap apps to take a screenshot to send to your friend, only for your phone to freeze up waiting for you to restart or wait for more than a minute while your friend is confused as to why you are away for so long) (or just during an online game session and your phone just became unusable while your opponent just wrecks you who helplessly can't do anything)
I have observed that the freezing problem usually occurs when the remaining RAM is low which is almost every time I'm running multiple apps. I would have to try to manually close any apps that I don't need anymore to avoid this problem. This would also mean that playing games will be likely to cause a freeze (which is also really happening).
This problem has been happening since I brought the phone on August with MIUI 11, but MIUI 12 also doesn't fix the issue.
While I don't know if the same thing will happen if I were to go with a higher RAM model, I think this kind of problem should not be happening in the first place (even my old phone from 6 years ago, a Galaxy Note 4 that also has 3GB of RAM, that was broken still doesn't have this issue). If they knew that there would be a freezing problem with a lower RAM model, they shouldn't just have it on sell in the first place. Although I suspect that this is a problem with the software, not hardware which can be fixed in the future (I hope).
Overall, I felt somewhat disappointed
coming from lg v20 very old phone
very smooth i love the battery life i don't care about charging speed as long as the battery lasts for a long time
i recommend getting note 9s or note 9 pro if you can! it is very noticeable for gamers snapdragon is always better and 9 pro for better camera
if you want to root you have to wait for 7 days or 3 depends (sometimes 3 months rare lol) to only unlock phone
a lot of bloatware it is xiaomi after all so i suggest debloater or just sell your data
