Minimum brightness - Nokia 7 Plus Real Life Review

You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the Nokia 7 Plus's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

The display can get quite dim.

Goes Pretty dim, but (Personally) still too bright while in full darkness. (But hey, There's native nightlight mode. Yay!) (4 Stars)

Dimly, in the playstore.

Minimum brightness is still too bright in night time.

There is an issue with some of the Nokia 7+ phones.
Some displays will not dim any more from 16% down to 1% (stays the same).
The phones not having this problem the display info says: 07
The with this problem says: novatek-v07
Also the display is a bit more yellow-ish

What @albino71 says is correct. I've found this out the hard way sadly. I noticed my screen was very bright in darkness. It was so bright i would prefer to wear sunglasses, or just wouldn't use it in bed....
Luckily i have a collegue with the same mobile phone and i've compared mine with his.

The difference is less noticable here, but there is some small difference in colour.

Is there a way to actually know what type of LCD is used, that information is just firmware version and it can be just a place or anything in that name Novotel,I want to find out what is the exact hardware model type ,like on mi phones you can check in self test or other brands, firmware versions can be misleading, mine is as per firmware 07 version and it is pretty bright at night even if it goes down to 4%

Try cpuz on playstore

Even in complete darkness the automatic mode does not dim the display completely down. I can pull it down manually, but that's not a good solution.

Any update on this? Has HMD Global acknowledge this issue?

any other user here that has a novatek touch panel firmware? what did you do with it?

Sadly, there is no update about this issue. Android Pie doesn't fix it. Perhaps in a later update, nobody knows.

I have the same issue too. Brightness too high on low setting. Display info: novatek-v07.

Some small updates, we have been comparing phones in the Netherlands.
For now, it seems that all novatek-v07 phones have this issue while others do not. We have also noticed that phones with the novatek firmware will respond differently to adaptive brightness depending on the light. If the phone is set to 0% brightness with adaptive brightness turned OFF, the light sensor is covered and adaptive brightness is turned ON - the novatek screens will jump to 16% brightness while the "07" (non-novatek presumably) variant stays at 0%.
I'm trying to push the issue with Nokia Support, but so far I'm getting the standard reply: "reset the device or send it back to us for repairs" :/
This is on Android 8.1.0 - updating to 9.0 as I'm writing this to find out if anything changes. Will update.
*update*
On Android 9.0 (V3.22C) adaptive brightness will keep the phone at 0%, however the screen still does not get any darker physically under 16% brightness.

Any news about this theme?

Can confirm, my phone has a novatek-v07 controller and adaptive brightness doesn't work properly as described.

Another phone with the Novatek display and the brightness/green tint issue here. SKU ends with A09. Black version.
The worst thing is that I previously had a non-novatek phone (a white one), but had it replaced due to damage, and the new one has this issue. This feels like a huge downgrade, so I'm considering returning the phone.
The display just looks plain ugly now.

Yep, I also have this won't go lower than 16% issue. UK TA-1055, Android 8.1.0, Novatek-V07 Touch panel firmware version in 'About phone'.
Only bought on Sunday so considering returning it

It seems that November update didn't fix it

To be honest, i don't think this will ever be fixed. On the dutch forum tweakers.net people have tried to have it repaired, like i did. But they get the phone back without being fixed. It's deemed "normal"...
I think Nokia has instructed their repair partners to not repair this issue. Nokia isn't owning up to their responsabilities. So this was my first modern Nokia phone and also my last. Right now, my phone is sent away for repairement of the USB-C connecter which is loose. Also a common problem apparently...
I'm seriously let down by this phone and i'm considering buying the Huawei Mate 20 lite after selling the Nokia 7 plus second handed.

It will dim over time, just as yours has, you cannot compare an AMOLED which has been used for X amount of months to a new one.

are you sure mate?
From what I've read, screens differs noticeably from one phone to another, whether it's brightness, green/blue/yellow tints, color vibrance, etc. I think it's due to the fact that AMOLED is still a new technology and has to mature a bit more.
With that being said, and assuming you have auto brightness/power saving features off, how much 'low brightness' your phone is? Is it still noticeably dim on full brightness? Not every phone has to be blindingly bright you know.

AMOLED has a lower lifetime than LCD, meaning that the phone will lose it's brightness faster than LCD, however I doubt that you'll notice any difference before 1.5 to 2 years, depending on usage and brightness setting of course.

Yes, it depends of the time/region/QA check?.
I don't know if it could be called less brightness, but there are different profiles for shure.

The OP was talking about the first manufactured SGS2's so I guess we are approaching these timescales and it will dim over a shorter time than 1.5 years but not noticable unless compared how he did, e.g. against a new screen.
I have noticed this too. Me and friend both purchased galaxy s2s in June (i preordered & recieved mine from 02 the first week of june I.e. their first ever batch) and both the displays were noticeably dimmer than another friends purchased only a month or so later.
Obviously this was only when compared directly but it was still somewhat surprising.
My s2 is now 6 months old and my brother has one that's less than a month old, and my dad has one which is about 3 months old.
I will compare the screens and report back any noticeable differences.

I have a Nexus One since its release and I can't notice anything wrong about the brightness.
I use my gs2 at 25% brightness at day time and at night 15%. I don't use any power saving options or auto brightness.

Just compared my screen to my brother's and my dad's and theirs is definitely noticeably brighter. My brothers is a month old roughly I.e. 5 months newer than mine, and my dad's is 2 months newer than mine.
Any idea why this would be the case?

My phone was the 4009th one built (check your IMEI number, it's possible to work out) and it's display is *MUCH* brighter than a brand new, replacement screen (original Samsung screen, not an eBay knock-off) that I bought for a friend's SGS2 about a month ago, so I'm afraid your argument at its basis is flawed.
I remember seeing a picture of where tens of S2s where lined up and the brightness were all over the place. It is what it is.
It is quite visible in some phones. I got my I9100G and my friend got I9100 at the same time. Mine is manufactured in October 2011 and his one is manufactured in August 2011. His screen is noticeably yellow compared to mine. Also, he is on 2.3.3 and I am on 2.3.6. Maybe its the GB version which has different colors.

is this still going on decreasing in brightness buddies......????????
or will it stops at certain level.........already ful deppressed by this low brightness..........
Look at the bright side (no pun intended), the brighter the screen is the faster it will dim-out and lose it's brightness (Read more on AMOLED lifespan). Also brighter screens are more susceptible to image burns, and obviously eat battery faster. So yeah, I wouldn't be so depressed if I were you.

Blotches on an all black screen? Test yours here

Can you guys with cameras that have manual control test something for me?
Following on from a post by someone else about weird blotches on an all black image displayed on the screen, I checked mine today in pitch darkness and noticed a faint 2 inch or so of blackness on one edge of the screen along with smaller blotches. It doesn't appear to be as visible as the other poster's though but I exaggerated in in the photo so it's easier to see and settings posted below for people to check as well.
This is only visible on an all black screen. This does not exist on any of the S2's I've owned. I'll check my dad's S3 tonight when I go see him in the same way but the way to photograph it to keep the results consistent are as follows:
Stick camera and phone in a cupboard and...
Phone screen brightness: 50%
Camera ISO: 200
Camera Shutter: 15 seconds
Camera Aperture: f/4.5
Remember to pre-focus and use the 10sec timer to avoid shake
Those settings will over exaggerate the effect as shown in my photo below but it makes it easier for everyone to see as you do have to focus your eyes in reality and it's not immediately obvious unless you're in pitch darkness and looking at an all black screen.
I don't know how I feel about this though but if it's visible using the above camera settings for lots of people then I'll leave it as is.
Again, it's only visible on an all black screen so make sure your image that you load is all black and not grey or something Make sure screen timeout is set to at least a minute to avoid the screen going off!

What free app? It's a black image with screen timeout extended. The rest is your camera settings to be able to fairly photograph the screen for everyone to compare, an app can't do that

I didn't see those nope! Thanks for the links. Seems strange though as the white S3 belonging to my dad has none of the blotches, neither does a pebble blue on another forum. My 2 S2 handsets had no issues either.
Oh well!
My first phone: (F/4, ISO 800, 20sec)
Second phone: (F/4, ISO 800, 30sec)
The guy at the store (**** Smith in Australia) was unable to reproduce the issue in-store, so swapped the phone out and said I'd have to go to samsung if I reported the same issue again. The 2nd phone still has the issue, but as you can see, nowhere near as bad... still... not very good is it.
My 2 year SGS1 had about 4 spots - never noticed any issue. The first SGS3 was definitely noticeable just scrolling through system menus at night.
That's rather bad^^ I've emailed mobiflefun with picture so let's see what they say.
Suggest you up your exposure (duration and/or ISO) to make it a bit more noticeable. Looks like you've got a fair amount of guff in the top-left corner.
:/ dodgy manufacturing.
I don't have an SGSIII yet, but I noticed pretty much this same thing on my Galaxy Note. One night I was viewing an image with an all black screen and it had these weird blotches on the screen. I had never noticed them before.

This "issue" is known since the SGS1. Is the leakege from the AMOLED display. One thing to consider i only have a line about half a CM in the same place where you have the circle mark. Maybe a manufacture failure?
quicker way to test.
1 - dark room
2 set auto brightness off and screen to lowest brightness.
go to phone and dial *#0*#
click vibrate test which will display black screen.
and then check....
p.s been through this in other threads here but mky local telco had 26 with this issue went to another telco and got a blue one today - and no issue whatsoever...

Nexus 7 brightness problems

Just got the nexus 7, but...
When I change the brightness through the power-control widget or settings/brightness, on or close to the lowest level it turns off the display completely. I can't see anything no matter what the lighting condition is. Is this a software bug? I don't see how I can turn it back easily.
Another problem, when reading book, the light from the left bezel bleeds and I have a darker top-left corner. It is kind of annoying.
I also have the flickering problem when the brightness is set on the mid brightness... software updated right after startup.

My backlight bleeding is very similar.
Does your screen get completely black when the brightness is low? Now, even when I turned on the automatic, it gets complete black. Is it just me or everyone else the same?

Wow. I thought my transformer bled light bad. I'm not feeling so bad now. Of course it has some other weird issues, but has been mostly reliable. If it acts up too much I'll just send it back. I've had it for almost 30 days and can't find any real reason to take it back. It reboots every once in a while if it gets overloaded or too hot (did it today in the sun..of course I had it overclocked too.....) and I've opened the dock to see that it has shut down for some reason, but its not a huge deal. Other users have reported the same, so clearly something isn't perfect. I came to this thread because I heard that the nexus has huge issues. I was curious to see what people were reporting. if I got a nexus like that I would be p****ed! There are reports of them locking up on startup. My transformer just keeps chugging along. Really I've had more problems with apex launcher than ICS on my tf300t.
edit: the light bleed is barely noticable on mine actually...only in darkness does it seem bad. I heard ips displays have issues with that, so took it as good enough for "spec" and really its not all that detractable unless I sit in perfect darkness. Video looks pretty great on the display.

Problem with ook hd+ screens?

Do they all do this?
XDA was having trouble yesterday, do ended up double posting. Ignore this one.
No, Those must be old units. Early on users were complaining about that, but got them replaced under warranty. If you buy one, be sure to have them turn it on to check it.
Is the dark strip on the right side that pronounced? I thought I noticed a slight dimming on the right side of my unit but attributed it to the ips technology. Any way to identify for certain?
My newly-purchased Nook has the dark area at the right edge. It's probably not bad enough for me to ship it back for an exchange, but it's noticeable.

I too see something similar with my recently purchased Nook HD+, but noway near as wide as the image in the first post, probably just a cm - are the rest of the recent post seeing something as wide as the first post?
I 'm having the same problem but it's much less pronounced - it's barely noticeable in most cases. Not worth messing with replacements.
I checked mine and it doesn't have any. Mine is shipped directly from B&N though. It might have been made more recently than those in retail stores.
I have a Nook HD+/HDplus which shipped with BN 2.0.3 Stock ROM, and that does not have any of these issues. It is an earlier build though.
Perhaps this fault occurs with early devices, and those which are being manufactured now? I'd simply go for a warranty. I know it's a hassle, but it's better to do it now, whilst you still have the warranty option available. You never know, it could get worse and eventually affect the whole screen. To mix matters up more, this could occur when you're outside your warranty.
I'd do a backup of your current setup, whichever way you prefer, be it CWM backup/TitaniumBackup (as long as you get everything backed up); then get a warranty replacement. After that, you should have no worries; and can be comfortable that there will be no further hardware issues with the screen.
All the best guys/girls!
I went to a B&N store today and both display models showed darkening at the right edge, so I'm not going to replace mine--there's no reason to believe a replacement would be better.
For people who don't seem to have the issue, what is your screen brightness setting? The dimming at the right edge is more noticeable when it's under 50%.

every hd+ i've looked at has the uneven lighting. i'd suspect that all have it since it looks like the light source is only on one side, unless newer ones have lighting on multiple edges like most larger tablets.
i'm usually using mine from 0-15% and don't notice it as bad when i go brighter except when on light colored backgrounds.

screen brightness

Got the phone for my wife and were both coming from a galaxy s5 and it just seems like the screen is not bright on the highest settings. I cant compare it to another phone because its not sold it store yet where I could play with a demo unit. She says its fine for her but its bugging me thinking I got a defective device.
Really, I actually think its too bright...I want the ability to lower the brightness from its lowest stock setting...
It seems pretty dark to me at the lowest setting. Try turning adaptive brightness off and then lower it yourself.
It gets a lot brighter then the s5. Try turning off adaptive brightness in the display settings. While adaptive is on, the brightness slider is the brightest it will get, not necessarily where it will be set in that lighting. With adaptive off, it actually sets it where the slider is.

Agreed, 10% is what I use for indoors and that is plenty bright for me, download lux and you can go darker than stock.

The screen on this phone is the brightest I've ever seen. It's downright blinding anything above about 1/3 for me

Low sensitive eyes? I have brightness set to 20% and find full brightness to be ludicrous speed bright. Jeepers. White on the S5 seems dimmer to me in comparison.
Seems I either have a defective unit or maybe the screen protector she put on is blocking some light. Its a zagg antiglare I believe. I did order a tempered glass one to replace it with. Ill have to take it off and see.
the mxpe display is 715 nits vs 442 on the s5, the mxpe should be one of the brightest displays on market

Gotta agree with everyone here. The display on this thing is insanely bright.

Pretty sure u have adaptive display on. Turn that thing off and you'll see how bright it actually is.
I have adaptive display off. Side by side the s5 is a tad brighter. Wont take the antiglare screen protector off till the new one gets here. If its still dim I'm going to call moto for a replacement. Droid-lifes reveiw unit seemed to have a dim display too they mentioned it in the reveiw
I must say I have to agree with what everyone else is saying--the display is very bright, too bright for most indoor usage at even 50% imo.

Where did you find the MXPE is 715 nits? I have been searching for any review talking about realistic nits but haven't found anything.
The S5 gets way brighter than 442 when using the Auto Brightness feature. The S5 actually gets up into the 700 range in nits.

Phone arena just did a Pure verses 6Plus comparison and showed the Pure at that nits level. 715 nits

Mine is set at half of what yours is currently at or even a 1/4 of it.
Bright setting on LCD or Amoled is a big hit on battery life.

I saw that in the review and it looked insanely dim. Idk if they had a defective device or what, because this is the brightest display I have ever used. I saw people commenting on that review saying the same thing.
