Heat - Sony Xperia XZ2 Real Life Review

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Sony Xperia XZ2 stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Asphalt 8 is bad example, there is 30fps lock. Play Lineage Revolution on ultra. Phone will burn.

Mine runs cool almost all the time. But yeah, it gets a bit too hot sometimes (which is acceptable, since I live in a tropical place).

Haha you guys havent ovned xperia Z5 and god forbid you tweaked thermal management ? scorched earth, you could actualy feel finger burn on back sometimes...
XZ2 heat to performance ratio is excelent in my experiences, luke warm most of the time while performing on moderate to heavy task, when maxed out still very good, i did not find it even close to hot

I still use my Z3 and even with that phone, I can feel my hands burning from heat sometimes.
XZ2 feels like an ice compared to my Z3, since Z3 could get as hot as a phone that came out from a stove or something.

It's IP68 certified though. .... ?

Did any of you used XPERIA Z3+? I think no. It was burning even in lite use. When I was playing games it would overheat. And using camera would overheat it.
So, XPERIA XZ2 heating iz nothing compared to XPERIA Z3+. This is normal for playing heavy games although I think XPERIA XZ Premium was better and head less heating.

Mine has some serious overheating issues. The exterior never goes beyond 40 to 45°C, which is fine, but the inside of the phone is melting. Especially when using the camera. Recording videos for a while it would first start deactivating features, before shutting down the camera altogether. It also can't charge then. Cooling down the phone is pretty hard, it can be 15°C outside of the phone by blasting it with the aircon, and still be overheated on the inside.
Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

I have gone from z2 to z3 to xz to this xz2. I haven't experienced any of the heat issues on the XZ2 that all those had. Haven't even seen a warning. Although I haven't done a super long video yet, usually the XZ would give me some issues after 3 minutes of video and I have done 4 minutes on XZ2 without issues.

Agreed to every point you said. My XZ2 have never experienced overheating as bad as my Z3 and Galaxy S6 edge (my S6 edge has a great overheating issue, much worse than my Z3). I only felt the phone is warm sometimes, but not that bad, still very tolerable.

Heating issue!

Hey,
Is anyone experiencing heating issues with their handset? I've just been reading on GSM that a lot of people are complaining.
Yes, its an issue.

I don't have a Z3+ (I have a Z3C), but I've read this:
Japanese Xperia Z4 owners complain of heat issues
followed by this:
Sony responds to Xperia Z3+ heating issues
Sony statement on Xperia Z3+ heating concerns
“The Xperia Z3+ is a high-performance 64-bit octa-core device with advanced camera technology, in some cases, additional heat can cause functions to stop. Enabling applications can also be felt by the user through the glass on the back. This is normal for the unit and should cause no concern.”
We need a reputable source to do an actual review of the production device.

Who is more reputable than Sony THEMSELVES, the ACTUAL manufacturers of the phone???
This is a big worry, was thinking of buying the z3+ but now might get the z3 idk. I was really excited for the z3+ but if the overheating is such an issue to the point where Japanese markets are advising their consumers to "use your tablet or pc instead of your phone if you can". I mean i shouldn't have to worry about these kind of stuff esp for a PREMIUM phone. Very disappointed
If we are reading the same quote from Sony, they are not stating there is an overheat issue. Heat generation is normal. I have this problem on my z2 when recording in 4k.
Look at this,
Already test z3+ for long time just normal heat
Edit: lol picture didnt uploaded
Sory dopost for becaue this picture
Xerxess, Please, try to run some game, Nfs, or Real racing 3, for example, and to play it for a 15-20 mins, and then look at the temp, if device won't turn off earlier of course And also, could you, please, try to use camera and video recording , and then report about a device heating to us, please

AR Mask app can shut down to prevent heating issues in under a minute. It was fine on prototype firmware, so something has been changed for the worse there..

My Z2 has a heating problem, but its not at high level. Shoul I do troubleshoot it ?
@xerxess, kindly let us know what firmware version your Z3+ is on.
I'm curious to find out if any of you reporting heating issues are running any apps to undercloak the CPU. Even my AT&T Galaxy S5 runs very hot if I dont use anything to undercloak or even use Power Saver at leat. I can run my phone with two cores on and two cores off undercloaked at 1.2 Ghz. What I'm saying here is try to run the phone with 4 coes online and 4 off, and undercloak all 4 cores at say 1.5 Ghz. I bet the heating issues would decrease if not go away all together. Obviously why buy a V8 if u are going to run it like a 4 cilynder right??? But we are talking about an issue here, that obviously e en the manufactures are aware of. Otherwise the camera app or other apps would not close when the temp gets up there. All they are doing at that point is turning off cores and undercloaking the ones that are one to prevent any more heat build up. And that allows the system in ur phone to dissipate the heat more efficiently. Any thoughts?
I don't have any overheating issues with my z3+. I havent played a game on it but I used it for a navigation while plugged in, where i would expect to heat up a lot. I mean it heats up a bit but what xperia z doesnt?
I am suspecting all the fuss may be coming from guerrilla marketing ploys from one of Sony's competitors. The Z4/Z3+ really is the best flagship phone in terms of design. SD810 has been in the market (via M9 and G4) and this issue coverage is only overblown with Sony's new phone.
So I just tried to play real racing 3 for 20 minutes while on charger and yes, the phone is hot but my old Z1 was the same way. It didnt crash or anything due to overheating.
btw. you can always put it into water to cool it down
I own the xperia z4 tablet wifi for some days now. Have tested it extensively over the weekend and can truly state that it has NO heating issue. Just played real racing 3 for about half an hour and the tablet gets moderately warm. NO crashes.
And no, i do not work for Sony.

Disappointed with Z3+ and going back to my Z3

I'm really Disappointed with Z3+ and I believe the Z3 is better because of the following reasons :
1- Z3 screen brightness is markedly stronger (you have to turn off the auto brightness in both of them ).. Even I felt the Z3 Screen is clearer!!
2- The frontal speakers in Z3 are better and louder especially in hard rock for example..
3- the battery life in Z3 is better
4- I'm disappointed with the build quality of Z3+ especially the back glass.. I felt it's even a plastic !!.. the Z3 build quality is noticeably better
5- believe or not.. I use the main camera to take a selfie especially while using 20.7 because the target will be farther in the photo frame (the camera lens is wider) ... and the secondary camera lens of Z3+ in skype or any video calling apps is not wider !! it's the same of Z3 !!.. this is very important for me in video calling apps
SONY what is going on !! please come back to the battle soon !! you are the best !!

It's better after the latest update.. I should talk about it but this is a known issue
Z3+, as the name says, was probably not meant for Z3 owners. On top of that, we all know about Sony's two flagships per year policy. At least they called it Z3+. But Z3 itself should have been called Z2 Slim (not even Z2+) lol Z3 was the most underwhelming addition to the Z series.
Coming from a Z2, I found Z3+ as a perfect upgrade. It brought all the jazz Z2 slim ( I mean Z3 ) did along with the upgrades that actually matter - 64 Bit SD810, Adreno 430, DDR4, LDAC, faster LTE Cat 9 (300mbps for now which is still > Z3's 150mbps), 5mp front cam, better rear cam sw. It was quite easy for me to take these over Z3's louder speakers & better battery life.

Did it ever came to your mind that you are somehow biased by the overall bad reviews? Do you really think you are able to judge without a bias?
Sorry I can't stand this complaining and whining about this device.
It's the same on all new devices. At first there is a big hype, then comes the reality which is behind the expectations. Same thing with the nexus 9 I own and nexus 10 I've owned. Both are great devices, but there was a great amount of people who were talking bull****.

Read what I wrote slowly and see by yourself in real life while comparing both of them as I said exactly and tell me then..
Only thing that is bull**** on this device is procesor. We must admit that Snapdragon 810 is heating. After update things with heating are better but Sony have to fix laging UI especially when phone is hot. Other than that phone is good. I don't understand why is screen on Z3+ worse than Z3 when screen on Z3 was calibrated to cold sometimes white looks gently blue. You can say what you want but Z3+ has better screen to me. Not to mention better viewing angles on Z3+.

Cold colors issue can be reduced by adding more red in white balance settings
But how to fix the lower brightness ???
Yes, you are right. Brightness can't be fixed. And Z3+ has brighter screen.

You mean Z3
I gotta throw in my thoughts on this as well.
Have had the Z2, Z3 and now the Z3+. While overheating is no longer a (big) issue after reflash in SBM or PC Companion, I kinda feel like the Z3 was snappier (lagged less), camera launched faster, apps didn't crash as often, battery lasted longer, and charged up faster. And other niggles.. (no root, for instance.. CM12.1 would be blisteringly fast on this thing).
However, I'm confident that these are issues that stem from Sony hastily putting out an unfinished .24 update/5.0.2 update.. not hardware.
Oh, and I actually liked the Z3 matte copper finish better than the more glossy they put on the Z3+.

Had to revisit this thread.
During the past week, I did a factory reset on the phone itself (no computer involved). I did this after doing a PC Companion repair phone thingie the week before.
Holy change in response time, Batman!
It's truly back to Z3 standards, and then some! I really really recommend anyone being begrudged over buying the phone to do a full wipe, first with PC Companion and then on the phone it self. Not sure wether it was the one or the other, or the combination.. but everything from battery life, to heat issues, to lagging is -gone-. Speakers might still be bad, don't know, never use them =)
Now, if we only could get a good root...

I use GPS (Waze) every morning to work. With OTA update applied it used roughly 20% on the trip to the office, and was HOT when I took it out of the car. After wipe (And rewipe) before today, it used 12% on the same trip. It still gets hot doing it, mind you, but not nearly as hot as it did!
One issue I have found is apps with access to radio (i.e. data signal) keeps it alive (As reported by battery monitoring app), even if the app is dormant. I believe this is a 5.0.2 / .24 issue though, didn't happen on the Z3 I had.

Can't say I have noticed any difference in screen brightness, though!
Z3 got warm, like my Z3+ does now.. nothing out of the ordinary there
I returned my z3+ two times now. There was a gap between screen and the frame. Poor build quality vs LG G4.

Thinking of buying Z3+ or S5. Does Z3+ really overheats with newest updates?

Z3+ in a local tech shop is actually cheaper than a Z3.
My main focus is camera, and I seen that Z3+ overheats just after few minutes of using the camera, which is just not acceptable. Is this true?
I would offer my sister (she will buy the phone) to buy LG G4, but she will not do it because she had terrible experience with her previous low end LG device..
Is the overheating really noticeable, not warm, but actually hot to the touch?
If she will not be able to use camera to take photos/videos of her child because of overheating problems/messages/phone being hot, then it's a no no.
Then it's gonna be normal Z3/compact or S5.

I've had the Z3+ a few months and I have not experienced any overheating problems.
But to be sure I just tried running the camera app now for 5 min and it's not even warm.
And Android 6 will be released soon (?) which should make the phone run even smoother.
(but if it were me I'd rather buy the Z5)
I would play it safe and avoid the Z3+. There are people that complain about the camera on the Z3+. When the Z3+ reaches a certain temperature in the camera app, it will notify you and close down. That could become an irritating problem if your sister is trying to capture a memorable moment only to have the Z3+ notify that it's running hot and closing the camera app
I personally own a Z3+ and I haven't run into that problem yet. That's also because I'm not trying to record long videos or take tons of pictures in a short period of time.

My z3+ gets hot sometimes. I did a 4k record test got past 15 mins and stopped it myself. However using armask shuts it down within a couple of minutes use. Overall I'm pleased
I've had my Z3+ for about a week. I've only gotten one notice from the system that it was overheating and that was from the Sony camera app. I was outdoors at the Zoo taking some pictures in about 80 degrees F and after about 10mins I got a message that said the temp was increasing and that if it increased higher, the camera app would close. It never did close but it got really warm. Didn't shoot any video, just pictures. Other than that, it functions flawlessly.
I'd recommend S5 over Z3+ only if you could save at least $200 (& don't mind the performance & camera downgrade). I have Z5, S6 (had S5) as well. Z3+ is the fastest one IMO. No lag, hiccup, frequent redraws - nothing. It does get warm at times with heavy usage, but I'd not call it 'too hot'. With a case on, I don't think the user will notice anything.
About the camera (stock app),
- Like someone already stated, AR stuff can close the app after couple minutes. That's way more than I'd ever need, but it may matter to you
- 4K recording: >10 min (indoor), > 7/8 minute (outdoor, YMMV based on env. temp)
- 1080p: I did 25 min (indoor) before I decided to stop. People over here did more than 50 minutes using google camera app
I don't think any other app can overheat the phone. Oh, the first fw was a mess, probably that's why it got some bad reviews. So update it right away if you end up getting one!
When I first rooted my Z3+ and tried different kernels with different tweaks the phone got so hot I thought it was going to melt. I went to everything as stock as possible using the "Custom US" ROM and everything has been pretty good. But recently I switched to the Global ROM and the battery has been better and the camera app lasts a lot longer. That being said I am sure people will see different results than I with their phones. The Z3+ is just disappointing that not enough developers are involved with it. Hopefully the Marshmallow release will change that.
It's a good phone ruined by poor cooling, games will routinely start to stutter and the screen will dim as soon as throttling is involved (which is basically any game that lasts longer than 2 mins.)
If you do decide on another phone, check to see which Snapdragon processor is in the phone too. The Snapdragon 810 is what's in the Z3+ and some other phones that have the 810 also experience overheating problems.
Overheating WAS problem in the beginning. I had One m9 and g flex2 and they too had overheating problems. But with updates the problem was solved for every device.

Hello aragorn771!
How did you install a global Rom? I've been stuck since I rooted my phone Z3+Dual and installed a custom kernel to get root, I didn't try so much things like installing other Rom or flashing because I don't want to go on a bootloop.
Can you tell me what is way to go please?:fingers-crossed:

I installed the ROM through Flashtool then re-rooted through Fastboot with the the recovery kernel. I tried a few ROMs through Xperifirm and settled at the global one.

Z3 + is horrible compared to Z3, it becomes too hot and shut the camera off after a few minutes, and also very lag!
.266 Update does not correct these problems and this FW does not have google apps.
I have already been in contact with Sony to send me another Z3 me or return the money because I was very disappointed with Z3 +!
I believe that with update 5.1.1 for Xperia Z3 + will greatly improve the overall stability of the device, as well as Z3 had a great improvement (Art / Zram)

I have been using the Z3 + for a few months haven't had any insane heating issues. Watching youtube for hrs on end or taking pics or filming. If your filming 4k for extended periods I'm sure it will add some heat but otherwise it's been pretty sweet. Looking forward to seeing 6.0 update.

Yes I have. I always keep things updated to the latest. Looking forward to seeing the 6.0 layout should help out on battery life. Haven't rooted this yet. Think a lot of the heating issues people have had in the past are from long periods of 4k filming and playing around for a long time with the AR Effect.
I've read a lot about this phone catching poo for snapdragon 810 and so on for heating issues which turned a lot of people away from it. The updates have smoothed it out a lot. I haven't had any issues or force closures. Tho I don't film 20 to 30 mins of 4k lol.

Oh ok, that's very good to read then, since I am considering this phone as a replacement for my broken LG G4 (which is going to be sent for warranty repairs, then sold once it comes back).
How about lag? I have read that it lags during everyday use...is it buttery-smooth when browsing the web, switching between apps, etc.?

Heat in Z5 Premium

Hi guys
I'm thinking of buying a Z5 Premium or the normal Version coming from a Note 4 before that
I wanted to ask how your experience is with the z5 Premium how is heat with the device I heard the snapdragon 810 did a lot of problems with other devices. How is battery hold up,please tell me about your overall experience with the device
The heat on my Z5 is more or less the same as my old Z2.
With exactly the same usage, my Z3+ heats a lot worse compared to my new Z5 Premium (an obvious example is when I install many apps at the same time, Z3+ will be very hot in such a short time while Z5 Premium will stay a bit warm).

This phone gets hot as Hell! Honestly I just started setting up a few apps on it and a custom background. All while streaming xm radio and keeping my screen" on live wallpaper with my old zultra. Both screens were at half brightness, however this z5p def. Runs much hotter! The battery it's also pretty disappointing. One of the main reasons I purchased it was got the larger mah's, but it seems to be draining just as fast as my old phone. I haven't even fully charged out yet so hopefully after a few cycles it'll improve!
The demo versions ive used got warm only when playing games or using the camera
Aside that a freinds Z5 was always hot but both her and I have had heating issues but this was because of google photos and after removal found that my device ran alot cooler vs hers strangely being warm constantly
I plan on buying my self this phone soon as ive seen alot of reviews saying that although having a Snapdragon 810 it doesnt get as hot as expected
I've only noticed heat:
When watching 4k videos
Playing games
Installing multiple apps
Downloading big files.
And tbh the heat isn't that bad it worries me, just warm to the upper definition of the word.

the heat issue is known by Qualcomm Snapdragon company who made this octa core 810 processor they confirmed that heat issue is due to their cpu so atm there is no way to solve this yet :/ but i do say z3 did heat more than z5 premium.

I'm returning my Z5C - here's why

I am so disappointed this phone didn't deliver what I expected. I absolutely loved it from the moment I received it, but it just won't work out. I am returning it today and going back to my Z3. The reasons are:
Snapdragon 810
Yep, that's it. This otherwise amazing phone was ruined by the SD810. I use my phones as my main camera, which has to work properly under tough situations. Nearly every phone I've had before was able to handle extreme conditions well; the Z5C wasn't. I take lots of pictures and videos, often north of 300 plus about an hour of 1080p videos per day. My Z1C withstood hot tropical summers and delivered every time under these conditions.
I was out last weekend and ready to test the camera on my new toy. I used Waze for about 20 minutes, starting from "idle." The phone got warm really fast. Then I got to the destination, thought I could record some 60fps 1080p videos, and was able to record about 10 minutes, then I got the famous message saying that the temperature was rising and the camera app would shut down soon to cool down the phone. It was uncomfortably hot. Mind you, the weather was fairly cool at 60°F. The battery was also going downhill real fast. I decided to turn the phone off and head out to another location. When I got there, I turned the phone back on (it cooled down quickly), and started recording some more videos. By now I was afraid to record anything longer than 5 minutes because I thought the phone would overheat and leave me hanging without a camera. I didn't get to that point, but missed lots of opportunities because of the overheating threat.
In less demanding situations, my phone got warm and uncomfortable to hold as well. From idle, my phone gets warm by simply surfing the internet for 5-10 minutes. It can be on Wifi or LTE, max/min brightness, it will warm up regardless. It doesn't get hot like when taking pictures, but come on. How can it get warm after 5-10 minutes of surfing the internet? That's really bad. The default state of the phone is running warm. Imagine if I go outside during summer and take 2 or 3 pictures. The phone is gonna melt in my hand. I can't rely on it. That's very unfortunate, because this phone is the absolutely best thing I've ever had the privilege of owning. Everything else is perfect. Size, battery life, screen, storage, fingerprint reader, waterproofing, open USB port... I'm gonna have to sit down and patiently wait for the next Compact to come out. What a shame.
Some people complain about the heat but others don't... Hopefully my phone doesn't have the misaligned lens issue, the back crack issue and the overheating issue. My Z1 compact is totally wrecked, worst comes to worst I'll just wait for the Z6 compact.

I think you can just tick the " Don't show this again" on the temperature rising warning aaaaand it wouldn't appear unless it just closes the app down :|

My one doesn't heat up or anything but I do have a bit of lens blur... I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle returning though

Just turn off any video stabilization as it generates most of the heat and you are good to live with Z5c now but yes it would still a bit uncomfortable to hold. Shame on SD810.

That's a restriction. I want to use it to its full potential. Even crappy Samsung phones have OIS nowadays. I shouldn't have to turn stuff off just so the phone works normally. Damn it, this sucks. I loved the phone so much, like I hadn't in a long time. This stupid SD820 had better be the best processor ever created. I'll be first in line to get the next Compact.

I like my old Z1c got much better heat control, just like you but the focus on that camera is so painful, always hit and miss, too slow. If the next compact got OIS, I'll probably get one too.
The Snapdragon never poses an issue for me but I live in Britain where the weather barely ever gets really, really hot.
I will also be first to get the next Z Compact, just because I love my Z5 Compact so much. No other small phone offers this many premium specifications. For this reason I have become a Sony fan since Google decided to go big for the Nexus 6P.

Hong Kong is extremely hot, expected to see many Z5 users to do IPX67 water cooling in toilet during summer here.
Hm...It's interesting.
First i thought that it's a real problem in my phone too, cause when i played Real Racing 3 after 10 minutes of playing the phone got warm and the battery go fast. Then today i read your report about camera and i started to worry. I quickly tried out my and after taking 10:24 minutes of 4K video the phone got hot but not extremely, in my impressions it was trully acceptable and i got no warnings about temperature (just the information at the start of recording).
i have an idea about getting warm when recording... when i start the recording i got a notif. about saving data to internal storage or if i have a high speed SD i can use it too. So i thinking is it possible that when you have inserted a low speed SD card in, the SD810 needs to work harder and this is the point why its warming up faster???? is it a possible way of it??? (i have Kingston MicroSD 64GB Class 10 UHS-I)

I only used the internal storage for the camera. It still overheated. That sucks.

Hm...Strange... Today i tested again my phone with gaming... Its getting hot but acceptable... I think you should get the phone back to the market or service center!
I'm using my Z5 Compact (white) for PS4 remote gaming and Moonlight remote PC gaming along with quite a lot of 4K recording. The SD810 really shows its muscle there, super low latency with it. . 4K videos top out at around 40 minutes before closing. Honestly couldn't be happier. It never gets excessively hot.
Really seems like luck of the draw on the heat side. I had a faulty unit before this one that leaked water through the headphone jack which couldn't record 4K for more than 10 mins before heating too much shutting down. It also heated a lot during average use. Maybe some are getting more thermal paste love during construction. I dunno.

for a premium device.. honestly the kind of issues being reported is unacceptable.. i am still taking my chances.. but just one chance n hoping it clicks! .. I remember spending close to 1700 dollars on vaio s laptop ..... awesome looks.. horrible performance...immediately returned it.
I was really interested in buying a Z5c. but after this thread I'm thinking about buying Z3c, and I can have CyanogenMod on it.

I have a regular Z3 and tried recording 1080p 60fps videos with the original ROM. It overheated almost as fast as the Z5C, although it never gets as hot as the Z5C during regular use (no gaming). What I mean by overheating is that the ROM closed the camera app and didn't let me use it again until the phone cooled down.
About CyanogenMod on the Z3, be aware that the camera has a fisheye problem that hasn't been and probably will never be fixed. All your pictures will be horribly distorted, especially at short distances.
Thanks for the information, why there is this much problem with these devices!
I'm very into having small android devices, and I think these two are my only options.
I so much wanted to experience cyanogen, but camera problem! Doesn't cyanogen update reqularly?

For cyanogen, you would have to unlock bootloader, which will lead to a drop in camera quality, loss of x reality, super vivid mode, and other features. Plus there's the fisheye bug on Z3c on CM. Soooo you might no want to go for cyanogen. Sony's UI looks plenty stock like so I don't think there's any need to be honest.

I think there's a point when you start leaning toward the stock roms and don't see enough benefits in AOSP. I'm using the phone without root and a locked bootloader.
*I returned my Z5C, but ended up grabbing another one. What an amazing phone.
