Howdy everyone. I'm a long time HTC Hero user who upgraded to the Evo today. So far I love it. I'm paying for the extra $29.99 Sprint Hotspot service. I'm actually traveling now, and I've gotten to use it pretty heavily. Also, keep in mind that speeds I discuss below are on the 3G radio. There is no 4G available (yet) in New York. Also, I'm doing the speed tests on the 20th floor in a hotel room, which obviously affects coverage (if I'm on the ground the 3G in NYC is super fast, but up all these floors the reception is a different story).
First of all, I'm pretty sure when you start the Sprint Hotspot, you actually connect to different internet servers. When I first got the phone, they didn't activate the hotspot service on my phone (even though I ordered it with that), and when I started the hotspot it would have an internet connection error about some username and password. It was like "error 67" - and that number stands out to me becuase somehow that was a data error back in my WinMo days .
Anyways, I have a feeling the switching of the servers actually limits your bandwith somehow. If I do a Speedtest.net speed test (on the phone using the speedtest app), I'll get pretty decent (300k/s-500k/s) speeds before starting the hotspot, and then < 5k/s after activating it (aka no usable connection at all).
So I finally broke down, and rooted the phone (using the unrevoked method - I am running the OTA update). I installed Wireless Tether for Root Users Pre14 (which obviously does not change servers when you start it), and I'm noticing about 2x the speed and lower ping times with it.
I ran two tests on my laptop on speedtest.com. I've attached to this post the results of each. The higher numbers are with Wireless Tether.
I'm curious to see what you guys think could be the issue with the Sprint app. Are they limiting the tethering speed? Should I just drop the Sprint service and use Wireless Tether?
I really don't mind paying a little more to Sprint if their Hotspot app works well.
Hmm, I would verify they are on the same server. You might also try changing the server you run the speedtests to and see if that changes things. The only thing I could think of is the way it handles the connections because the Wifi tether is an adhoc connection.

No. I actually figured that this would increase overhead, so I shut off all encryption.
The thing is, when I turn on the Sprint Hotspot, the internet on the phone itself is really slow. I'm not even talking about what it is on a laptop or something.
I can see this being true. The only thing I want to know concerning the NotSpot and rooting tether is it legal or not. I am only going to use the HotSpot app one in a blue moon so I am not going to ay for it. I am just wondering if it is legal to use the rooted way.
It's not illegal people, it's not that serious.
its not illegal, but the question is what will they do with your plan when they find out... worst case i can see is add the $30 hotspot fee as we already have unlimited data plans

hmm, you actually got your laptop to connect using unrevoked+ota+wifi tether for rooted phones from the market??? why is it that i cannot get my ipod touch to see my connection...ARGH!!! i hate this! i may just go back to winmo...this is my first android phone. had tp2 and wifi tether worked perfect for it.
Okay well iam on Verizon with a unlimited data plan with a droid turbo with android 4.4.4 version 21.44.8. And I found away around to keep my unlimited data and use my Droid Turbo as a WiFi hotspot with out root and not being charge extra. Untill someone can get the Droid Turbo Rooted...
The way around to get Wifi Hotspot with the Dorid Turbo and dont charge you but still able to us your unlimited data is... go in to SETTINGS then click on TETHERING & MOBILE HOTSPOT Then click on MOBILE HOTSPOT it'll turn the phones wifi hotspot on then it'll tell you that you have to Subscribe for the $30.00 to turn Mobile Tethering on. Well go ahead and Subscribe for it to turn on. Then once you set the WiFi up to what ever Name and Open password or Close password you choose. THEN LEAVE THE WIFI HOTSPOT ON BC What we will do Next you will HAVE TO do the Process All OVER again IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE CHARGE $30.00 Bucks A Month.
Oook well Once you get that done GoTo verizonwireless and login to your account. Then go to Products & Apps page then once your in there then click on the top of that page Manage Your Products Modify, remove and support. Once your in that page you will see the HOTSPOT you Activated then go to it And REMOVE IT. then log out of your Account.
Then go back to your phone and you will see your WIFI HOTSPOT IS STILL ON. And JUST LEAVE it ON ALL THE TIME. And don't shut the phone off your you will have to do it all over...
I've been useing it a couple few days now and no problems and still able to use THE NEW. DROID TURBO for MY WiFi Hotspot with unlimited data.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL UNlimited Data Users. :good:
How has your battery life been affected? I guess you can't connect your phone to wifi while you have this on?
Have you received your statement from VZW yet? I'm curious if it shows a $30 charge, then a $30 refund?
My battery life stays good charge the Turbo one day and stays good for about half of the second day.
And no you can't turn your WiFi on at same time but if you do it will kick your hotspot off and you would have to go back to your account and remove it again.
But I haven't received anything back from Verizon on that BC if you turn it on and go straight back shut it off the account it shouldn't charge.
This has potential.
I use FoxFi with PDA Net. You can download the apk from the net, and Google Play will keep it up to date. Costs 10 dollars to activate... once...
Never had an issue.

Can you explain that? I've used the same app FoxFi on other phones before to wifi tether and they've worked. Does the droid turbo not work like that?
It will not allow for wifi hotspot aka tethering. It will allow usb tethering. Which with a laptop can then be shared

Foxfi has not supported the Droid Turbo with 4.4.4. And Verizon has blocked the app so can't use it on the Turbo. If you have a Droid Turbo you would know. Trust me I used Foxfi for the droid RAZR for years and I have paid for the app. But on the Verizon droid turbo they have blocked it. But you can use the foxfi and PDA for USB tether ONLY.... No WiFi Hotspot.

Same here, except my Droid Razr was also blocked from using pdaNet when I upgraded to KitKat. I emailed the developers of pdaNet about five months ago, before I got the Turbo, and at that time they said they had not found a work around for Motorola phones on Verizon's Network. I emailed them for an update last week but they haven't responded yet.
Right. My droid RAZR is still on jelly bean. BC didn't want to lose my WiFi but I could root it and put a cyanogenmod on it.
When i click on Mobile Hotspot, i get "Checking on subscription status." Then i get "Your order did not process successfully. Please contact customer service at one of the following numbers:" yada yada yada. They must have figured out the vulnerability. Any ideas?

Well I'm not sure ? You on a unlimited data plan ? That you try calling Verizon ? See why you can't ? Just turn the hotspot on it should go thru. Then you have to login to your Verizon account on the inter net to take it off the account but leave it turned on on your phone.
With regards to USB tethering, have you had any issues connecting on your PC? Mine connects and then immediately disconnects on both standard and legacy drivers.
I have Not had any problems with any devices connecting to the Turbo WiFi Hotspot. And I have connect a PS3, Nook Tablet, HP Tablet, All different Brands of Laptops and All different Cell Phones. And had all different devices connected at same time.
Still no charges from Verizon? They are slacking

So far still haven't received any charges from Verizon.
Got a new phone bill for this month and still no charge.
Awesome thanks for the update!

Just tested the built in tether from the settings and was able to pull down over 25 gigs with no warning texts or slow downs.
Very nice to not have to use a 3rd party app because the performance of stock tether is vastly superior. Could barely even tell i was tethering, just got a little warm but didn't slow the phone to a crawl like some other apps do :good: very impressed just make sure you have an apn using fast tmobile and ipv4 and you should be good to go. Possibly a user agent switcher on a browser but that's it
I'm tethering on at&t unlimited grandfathered data plan. Apparently the aren't throttling anymore unless you are on a congested tower. I'm often hitting close to 60mbps down. Good times.
For t-mobile. I don't believe the stock app bypasses tethering. From what I've read on Nexus 5 forums the stock android tethering app sends data to the carrier to indicate tethered devices. From my experience. I have an unlimited data plan, with either 3 or 5GB cap of tethered data. I found that over several days i was watching streaming video, and got it to about 5GBs, and then the next day, my connection seems to be throttled. This is evidenced by doing speedtest on both my ipad (tethered to the idol 3) and then the idol 3, from the same location within minutes of each other and seeing a vast difference in the download speed I got between the devices.
I want to do this test a few more times to just make sure I wasn't in a shotty connection area, but my belief is that t-mobile throttles but its not an immediate cut off. You might get above the cap, but eventually they catch up with it and shut you down.
Anyone else have this experience?

I've found "easytether" to be the only solution for me with t-mobile as it uses adb to create a network connection that doesn't send the "tether" tag. It's usb or bluetooth (windows only) though..works well enough for my needs with my laptop. Once the device is rooted a small change can be made to make the device use the same apn for tether as well as phone and the problem goes away. I tried pdanet which supposedly does the same thing via wifi but t-mobile still blocked/throttled my traffic.
Has it been discussed or brought up about being able to disable the Hotspot Verify option?
My old Moto X Pure didn't need to verify (I have the service) to enable the Hotspot. What I noticed this do was two fold:
1) data usage appeared as my normal phone usage
2) faster speeds over hotspot for my connected devices
+1
maybe an app for taht?!
Got unlimited data but limited hot spot so would be great to make things better
Now that AT&T/Sprint/Verizon are also rooted, it would be great to find a universal solution. I'm on AT&T and my V20 also does this. It's really annoying, I hate having to wait to enable my hotspot.
Hi guys, my wifi tether router app worked fine on my moto g4 plus with android 7.0. Right now I bought sprint moto e4, rooted it, tried to run tether and it didn't work....Is there any way to fix it and use my moto e4 as a hotspot?
Thank you and appreciate any suggestions.

Does it hide hotspot traffic from sprint? My hotspot is working ok, I just need to use my phones unlimited data as hotspot...
I am on Boost Mobile which runs through Sprint. Does this code work on this version also? I am doing research before I get the phone. Want to be able to use the phones full potential as soon as I get home with it.
And also is there added code for unlocking the data speed cap on the hotspot? I do know about FoxFi and like the way it worked on my friends 1+. was using my hotspot from my old phone only getting around 100kB/s on a couple torrents. when he plugged his phone in to my computer it jumped to 100M/s. I would love to see these speeds from my phone.

Not sure which line did the job, but since I added these lines to the build.prop I haven't had any notice about tethering which I did get before I did:
Code:
ro.config.nocheckin=1
ro.config.dun.nocheckin=1
net.tethering.nocheckin=1

Good to know. Switching from MetroPCS right now. with them blocking the hotspot usage on their new unlimited plans I had to get FoxFi and was only able to use bluetooth tethering to access any type of hotspot. Rooted my LG Aristo from Metro and hadn't really had a chance to play with the code, only pushing out 10mb/s at peak down and 1mb/s up.
Just to be sure where to put the code, where does it go? This will be my first actual build.

I tried this code and it doesn't seem to work, or may be it will prevent sprint from throttling after I reach my hotspot limit? my data still counts towards hotspot limit.. Currently I am 2 gb, the limit is 10, lets see what happens after I reach 10 gb...
I also have working wifi tether router app on this phone which really hides traffic from sprint, but unfortunately download speeds are very slow, about 1-2 mbs, while actual speed is 50-6- mbs..
@amarc78 does this bypass the 8gb limit?
BTW I did notice that because Boost has an allowance, foxfi is just a placebo effect. It shows up how much data is used. It may look like it is using its own, but it shows up in the process that it mainly just turned the hotspot with a diff password/SSID

I did find out that BT tethering works with a phone that uses a WiFi source and makes the phone become an extender/repeater. But only with BT.... (Not using phone data) I can prove that BC my J7 has no data and used my neighbors WiFi on it connecting my BT enabled devices to the J7 using my neighbors wifi

I got the notification saying I reached the 8gb hotspot limit before I added those prop lines and I haven't had it again and I've used a lot more than 8gb. It doesn't stop normal data usage notifications though.

Ok, so I ran out of my 10 gb and speed dropped down to 32 kbs..the trick didn't work, however, changing apn type to "dun" works fine but you get slow speeds, 1-2 mbs on average. Currently, I started to use wifi tether router which gives me same slow speeds of 1mbs-2 mbs while phones speed is 50 mbs, and I don't understand why. I had moto g4 plus before and it worked perfectly with high speeds. I tend to think that sprint's rom is responsible for that. Do you know what can be in there that limits the speed of wifi tether router? Also, I think may be I should try to flash unlocked xt1768 rom which doesn't have sprint's **** in it, will it be possible? Appreciate if someone could give me a clue, thanks!

I used FoxFi/PDANet+ for a long time to stop MetroPCS from seeing my USB tether usage, but the app suddenly stopped being able to run 'pro unlocked.'
I started using CWM's Tether Android app (and their Windows accompanying app) on my old G3 and now on my E4, and it works just as well. All traffic seems to appear as if it's only going to my phone. I've never had a slowdown or anything while using it.
It's limited in the free version, but only a one-time $4.99 US for the full... very worth it, I'd say. I was happy to pay it.
There's another app called EasyTether Pro (US $9.99) that I playex around with. It's got a couple more options (e.g. connecting by Bluetooth), but I figured I could make do with the cheaper option.
My go to method is to use PDANet/Easy Tether on a windows PC and run Wan Miniport on the PC to make the rest of the house have WiFi normally I use it as an extender, but it works also to run without hotspot usage so it makes the PC the hotspot instead..... Provided you have the time to use it
