Tap & Go - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello world,
I just got a S8 and I would like to recover datas from my current device (accounts, Wi-Fi passwords, apps and data etc.).
I updated the S8 on Oreo then made a full wipe to start from scratch but at first boot there is no Google based data recovering feature like Tap & Go.
Did I missed it? Is there another way to restore all my datas? It will be a pain to re-set everything by hand...
Thanks for your support.
Enjoy!

HELP!!! I9000 dropped all my data oO

Hi,
I have an issue with my Galaxy S. While I played with the app "VPNC" suddenly my Phone freezes and the Screen is black. (Donßt think the app is responsible for that)
So I removed the battery and after a reboot the setup wizzard appeared and all my personal data disappeared. Some Contacts, call history, app data, shortcuts, everthing!
Apps are still installed but some crash when I start them. My wallpaper is still there but nothing else on the "desktop".
WTF happend to my phone?
Is there any way to get my data back?
Looks like you wiped the settings playing with app.
Data contacts should be where you backed them up to .
You could look at internal sd card via USB mass storage .
You need a factory reset .
As the dev of the app says .
Warning: You do this on your own risk: when hacking your phone you loose the phones guaranty! If you crash the bootloader by doing this, you are lost: the phone will definitely be broken!!
I warned you...
So first inform yourself carefully about what others did and their experiance by googling around...
jje
Actually I do not think that this app is so dangerous at all because it seemed to be the only Fritz!Box compatible VPN Client and is used by many users afaik.
Maybe I pressed some buttons while the screen was black and did something stupid without seeing what I did?! I don´t know...
However, the data seems to be gone and I have to deal with that.
The good thing is, that I created a titanium backup just a few days ago (Batch --> all apps and settings or so)
The bad thing is, I have never really used this app. Just installed it and made that backup. No restore so far and just the one backup for testing purpose.
Now I don´t want to do anything wrong, so what is the best way to proceed now?
Reset Phone to factory defaults, reinstall titanium and try to recover this ways?
Re-Flash the ROM, reinstall titanium and try to recover that way?
Is there any chance to make a "dump" of my current flash in case i am destroying more than is already destroyed, so that I could get back to the state the phone is in right now?
Is there anything that will not be recovered by titanium, so that I should try to save this before doing the reset?
//EDIT:
I am wondering, how is it possible to wipe all the personal data and configs with just one buggy app? what exactly happened there? Does this make any sense at all and is this behavior a known issue?
Factory reset and use Titanium to back up apps and data but not system settings .
jje
okay thanks, will try that.
Can anyone tell me if there is any chance to backup my phone (flash dump?) as it is right now before I do the reset? If my titanium backup does not work I ḿight have wiped more doing the reset than already is wiped and it would be a good thing if I could get back to state the phone is in right now.
Did the reset + recovery with titanium now. Everything is fine so far except my home screen layout. Is there a way to recover the home screen using titanium?
If not, how can I back up the home screen?
btw: titanium is a really great tool. Will definitly buy the pro version to support this project.

[Q] Wipe Data/Factory Reset. What does it entail?

I am currently on CM10.1 and have been considering testing other ROMs for the Nexus 4. All ROM flash guidelines ask that I wipe everything and do a factory reset before I flash the ROM.
My question is does doing a data wipe permanently erase all data on the phone? Including installed apps, app data (game saves, whatapp chat logs, etc), SMS and Contact information, gallery files, wifi passwords, etc. Or is it just some ROM specific data. More importantly, if it is more than just ROM data, is this data gone forever or is it synced with the google cloud and is simply synced over the internet once the phone is setup with the correct google account again? If it is synced, what data is synced? I presume at least contact information is synced with the cloud but what about the rest.
I could find any clear information on what exactly wiping data entailed and what could be the expected unrecoverable losses possible. Also can I just take a backup of the data using some app (Titanium backup?)/nandroid backup and restore the data once the new ROM is installed?
Factory reset will, just as the name states, bring it back to the state is was when you first got it.
So yes, every app and data of it will be lost. This includes contacts, wifi passwords etc.
Your contacts, wifi passwords etc will be synced to the google servers, if you chose to do that when you set up your phone for the first time.
However, it will not wipe your sd card, so all your photos and music will be save.
I'd suggest you make a backup of your WhatsApp history, this way when you re-install it you will be prompted if you want to restore the messages from the backup.
Hope this helped!
EDIT: It is not suggested to restore data from a titanium backup, since this can generate problems.

Is there any difference between delete cache and data and doing a factory reset?
While doing a cache wipe, only files from the Cache partition are being deleted. These files were saved by your phone to use as cache. (Think of it as your browser history. if you wipe that, only certain files will be deleted, while the app itself won't be touched)
While doing a factory reset everything will be wiped, including the cache partition. Excluding the sdcard ofcourse.

Ooh, old subject haha.
The android OS IS your rom, so to have a full stock android rom, like you had when you first turned on your nexus 4, you need to flash the factory image provided by Google. Link to factory images
If you dont know how to flash these files, efrant has a great guide on how to do this. Link to the guide
thanks for ur info

By wiping rom, did you mean to wipe system off your device? If that is what you meant there, then your device won't boot after that because there is no OS installed. To clear your confusion factory reset only set your device back to the default settings when you buy it. Means it will wipe your downloaded apps, cache, saved data, contacts, messages etc.. Some stock recovery doesn't wipe your internal sd card when you performed factory reset (means all your pics and music are still there) while in some other erases all and you will be left with nothing..just like how you first received the device from store.
Further down, if you flashed any custom rom on your device and you do a factory reset. It won't wipe away the custom rom that you installed, it will only set it back to the rom default settings. To get it back to the stock manufacturer rom, you must flash the official rom released by your device manufacturer. I hope this will clear your confusion.
thanks

I am bumping the post instead of openning a new one - because it is the same question.
You wrote that Factory reset will not wipe Photos, Music etc.
Did you mean that if I saved it on external SD? Because in Nexus 4 there is no option to add SD card.
My question:
1. In my nexus 4, when doing factory reset - it erases EVERYTHING include Photos and music. so please help me understand.... cause I am confused. Does it reset everything or not?
2. In nexus 4, where is the option to Wipe data? I see only "Factory reset". In recovery console?
3. Any differences between Factory reset from the settings, to wipe data from Recovery?
thanks!

1. We do not have external sd in nexus 4. There are 2 types of recoveries; stock and custom. Stock recovery is what you get when flashing factory images while custom recoveries are twrp/cwm. In stock recovery, factory reset delete everything on your device. Everything in your internal as well. It will wipe clean your device. For custom recovery, it won't clear your internal sd storage so your photos/music/docs/backups are intact. It will only delete data partition which stores your downloaded apps. I hope you are clear on that now.
2. Factory reset=wipe data. In every recovery, it's the same.
3. No, it uses the same command so basically there is no difference. Depends on the recovery you use, factory reset on stock recovery deletes everything while on custom recovery sd card is still intact.
The answer that explained everything for me - is that there is a different between wiping data from Stock recovery to wiping from Custom, so now i get what you mean!

Flash rom and keep apps and data
Hi. Is it possible not to factory reset/ wipe data when flashing a newer rom? The reason I am asking is because I want to flash Lollipop on my Note 3 as Samsung keeps forgetting to send it to me OTA or via Kies. But I don't want to lose all apps and data. Thanks in advance.

Hey. I have 1 question. I have pictures, music and videos on my Internal Memory, and I don't want to lose it (I didn't back it up anywhere and I don't have an SD card). Will Wipe Data/Factory Reset delete those stuff, or just apps, settings, etc?
I'm using S4 Mini i9192. I also have Philz Touch Recovery.

I have not used Clockwork recovery for a very long time now so I don't know how it works nowadays. But last I used it, factory reset in cwm (philz is a modified version of cwm) does not result in complete wipe. It will leave out the sd card partition. But like I said, it was very long time ago. Make a backup of them if it is really important. Well, in my opinion, everything needs backup. Even things in your computer needs a backup.
p/s: Try to ask this in S4 thread. Here, we (nexus 4 users) mostly use twrp as cwm is discontinued for quite some time now.

[Q] Back up an app's data still useable if I revert from Lollipop to KitKat?

Tl;dr version: The big question in my mind is: If I backup and app and its data from Lollipop, when I restore it to KitKat will it work fine?
The full story:
My wife's Nexus 7 got the Lollipop OTA a little while back and has been having a terrible time with the lag, etc. We've done all the suggested fixes short of doing a factory reset, which I want to try but have a problem to overcome....
My wife has a game which she has played for many many months which doesn't sync game progress to the cloud anywhere... Her sisters are quite competitive and constantly compare their each other's progress in this game.
She is having a miserable time with the Lollipop update, but wants this game data SO BAD that she is willing to suffer through the lag to keep it... but its driving me nuts...
I have a plan to move forward, but want to see if I can get some confirmation that my plan *should* work. I unlocked the bootloader on it in the past. it has since lost root, but I should be able to get it rooted again without hassle and without wiping data (correct?).
Plan A - Factory Reset Lollipop:
I should then be able to use either Titanium Backup or maybe Helium to back up that app's data. In fact, I may skip rooting and just use Helium with the desktop companion app. Then pull those backups to the cloud or onto the pc. Then do a factory reset on the device. Push back over the app's data backup then restore it. Does that plan seem correct? I've done similar in the past so I don't think I'll run into issues.
Plan B - Revert back to KitKat:
This is my secondary plan, and the one I have the most questions about...
After doing the above, if the tablet is still laggy, I'd like to revert it back to a factory image for KitKat since she was fine with that version until they release some bug fixes, etc. for lollipop. If I backup and app and its data from Lollipop, when I restore it to KitKat will it work fine? My concern is the difference between ART and Dalvik, etc. etc. I've seen a few places that talk about using backups when moving 'forward', but can't find a good answer on moving 'backward'.
Thanks,
Zeustopher

Not able to recover data

I switched back to oxygen os from lineage os ( because i messed something up and thought of using stock for the meanwhile). I was completely relying on the automatic backup and didn't take any backup of my files and music etc (except photos which are automatically backed uo by google photos). so when i flashed the latest stock rom and went through the setup wizard i didn't get any option for restoring my data . I did enter the correct email and had a fully functioning wifi . I have used my email to restore my data many times but this time it won't. Please help
There are loads of programs you can use to recover deleted files from Android, but you need to root your phone first.

[Q] Lenovo K4 Note Vibe Softbricked - Need Help to debrick

Hello guys,
I need some help with my Lenovo K4 Note Vibe (3GB RAM version). The thing is it started popping up random "Unfortunately xxxx stopped working" a couple of weeks ago. That specific app would just crash and restart itself. It can be a system app or game or any random thing (GUI, Contacts, Messaging, Angry Bird and other games etc.). It would usually gets solved on by restarting the phone or stopping the app from setting or on it's own.
Now the problem I have is, I gave it a restart and now it just shows "Unfortunately Notification Center Has Stopped". I have two option "Okay" and "Try To Resolve" none of them does anything except the error goes away for a second or two and pops back up. I can not even see the usual "Enter you PIN" screen. Yes I was using Fingerprint so I had to enter the PIN every time I restart the phone. So now basically I'm stuck at startup screen without any options. The phone is alive I can tell, I can feel it vibrate when I call, hear messaging tones (whatsapp/text). If connect it with PC when turned on, I can see a Lenovo Folder option to browse but its empty since it requires the phone to be unlocked first with pin.
The mobile belongs to my sister and she is dentist by profession and have lots of important data including some research she did (photos) for journal she publishes in national magazines.
How do I get past this error ? I do not have root, I tried the recovery but it is a Chinese recovery and does not have an option to wipe catch partition. The phone was on latest version (Marshmallow) and there is nothing I can do to start it up. Tried booting in safe mode but still the same error.
There is an option to see basic details in Chinese recovery, it shows
Model No. A7010a48
Build Time : 2016 12 27 14:35:36 CST
Kernel Ver. 3.18.19+
Android Ver.: 6.0
along with various other details.
How do I save my data ? Can I recover it anyhow ?
1. Try wipe data and factory reset
if not solve
2. Use SP Flash tools to flash stock rom.
If you have unlocked bootloader, then you can try to flash/hotboot into twrp recovery as it shows all files and folders in pc while connected in recovery mode.
Even if the bootloader is locked, there is no harm in trying.

Bootloader is locked. And there was no custom recovery flashed, every recovery flashing method I searched required for data to be wiped and bootloader unlocked so I`m stuck on that front.

Like I mentioned in post, the data is important, I could throw away the hardware I just need data.
I`m looking for a method to wipe catch partition without getting my data erased or to extract data any other way. Please do let me know if anyone have any solution at all, this is really really important.
Enable usb debugging
Use adb pull command to get the data.
Edit: nevermind, saw you can't unlock the phone.
Pretty sure if you flash twrp it will wipe data data partition as soon as you reboot. So I wouldn't do that.
Other option is do a full nandroid backup using adb but the only way you are gonna get that working is if you flash twrp and like I mentioned it's probably not a good idea but I'm not certain.
Another option is mtktools/spflashtool and do a full firmware backup from that, reset the phone and then restore from the backup, but I have no experience in that but it should work in theory.
Do you see the error even when there is incoming call? If not try from InCallUi i.e. when you answer the phone, try to navigate from that such as opening contacts, if there is a chance pull down notification bar and enter into settings. If any of these happen, it will ask to enter your pin and then you can unlock your phone. Now connect your phone to your pc and backup the data you need
If the data you seek are images, google photos should already backup your images to your google photos cloud account. Check this by signing in from your pc.
If they are media from whatsapp, don't worry, it will be backedup daily to your google drive account and all your messages along with your media will be restored after you install whatsapp again.
If they are Docs, then probably they are in gmail account (PROBABLY) you can always search for required ones in gmail.
Any other files from these cannot be restored if they are inaccessiblefrom your phone.
Suggestion: Maintain a cloud account which you feel safe and backup to that account so that you have no need to worry about the important files. **** like these happen every now and then.
Edit : These are gonna work if you checked the online backup or sync in respective app.
