OPTIONS for MANTA after LOS 13 KILLED - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that the lineageOS team has stopped LOS 13 updates for manta, what other ROMs work well? Ones that include monthly security updates and are stable (enough)?

Yeah, not only that but the latest OTA is hot garbage. Why use the new kernel if it offers no noticeable improvements and only introduces a huge regression bug (buggy audio jack)?
Monthely security updates?
you have a 2012 tablet, give that dream up now.
Stable?
A quick peep in the android developement gives that away. Some of my favorites for Nexus 10: Phoenix OS, Remix OS, Omnirom 6.0.1 (tablet navbar support!!!)
My personal reccomendation?
Phoenix OS. It has a great tablet UI and allows you to switch to normal phablet UI whenever, and doesn't murder your battery like Remix OS.

Im using latest LOS 13 and it has gotten way better then the nightlies before
even audio jack works.
i thnk i will stick to that for the next time

@ Galaxyninja66
I haven't move from Jan update to the last Feb nightly yet,...
but I disagree... Yes, I agree if the older Kernel is stable and secure, no need to update. Disagree because, none of the ones you mentioned, have the latest ASB fixes included. @followmsi is going to keep this going not sure for how long... he has four versions going... 14.1 and 15.1 based on AOSP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-10/development/rom-t3584526 AND AND 14.1 and 15.1 based on LineageOS: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-10/development/rom-lineage-14-1-20170216-unofficial-t3557735, which also includes instructions to revert back to the old kernel for audio fix... unless I am mistaken!
Thanks for the info on RemixOS versus PhoenixOS... I did not however see PhoenixOS on manta android development... page 1.

Lineage version 20170509 seems to fit. Flash via TWRP, wipe cache/dalvik. At first start I had 2-3 reboots but after optimisation with sd maid it works fine for me.

Using it as a Hybris base, and I can't find the kernel commit that broke the headphone jack so I am angry. Also its not that you *can* just flash the old kernel, it's that you *have* to flash the old kernel. If most people are just flashing the old kernel why even use the updated one? That's like me releasing an update to an office application that forces you to restart the app every time you want to switch orientation, and offering an older version of the app for people who don't like this.

Did that, but with this kernel i do not have hw decoder support. At least audio jack works.. thanks

I moved to Nexus Pure Android ROM 7.1.2 and it is amazing. So fast, smooth, audio jack works, hw decoding as well.. so far way better than LineageOS 13 or 15.1.

Now if that camera works, I'm gonna believe every single word you say.

I have not say anything about camera. I never wanted/needed camera to be working. I prefer fast and stable system for youtube, movies watching and for that Nexus Pure ROM is amazing. You should try.

I'm a total noob with an old Nexus 10. I'd like to put something new on it. Nice it would be to have more Linux-like capabilities, but not absolutely necessary. This thread has given me hope, but as a total noob you're talking over my head. What would you folks suggest?

The problem is that when I build hybris-hal with the busted up kernel it breaks pulseaudio, and in order to apply a patch I shouldn't even need to apply, i not only have to rebuild hybris-hal with the old kernel, I have to build a new base rom with it. so no, it is not as easy as just "flashing the new kernel over the LOS install" and frankly, if the new kernel breaks more than it fixes, then we shouldn't upgrade, if anything, the NEW kernel should be the optional one.

Hello everyone, after a great success on building roms for bacon device. I've decided to share my work with other devices. So now I share with oneplus 3. After positive feedback on the rom today I'll publish here the rom.
Kernel and Device tree are untouched so everything should be working smoothly. You can use a custom kernel in case you like, but i'll only give support to stock kernel as I do not yet own an device. So CM bugs are basically also our bugs, and from what I know there is none. Still I'm open to suggestions.

Features:
Updated SQL to 3.15.1
Optimized Build with custom toolchain on ROM and Kernel
Proguard 5.3

More coming soon
I'm a very praticle user, and my aim will be to get a very fluid stable system, at same time with speed and battery, keeping most stock possible with the optimizations which will improve for real our experience.
Thanks

And have considered adding any of @arter97 fixes and improvements from his cm13 kernel

Loved your builds on oneplus one when I was using it for month.
I will try soon.
Between stock cm from 13 till now, having strange bug fp scanner, sometimes fp sensor stop working, we need manually turn on screen.
If same happens, I will report back.
Also same was in stock cm13 but not happening in @Sultanxda rom.
also, this is not happening in aosp based roms, so its deep in cm.
.
thanks,

@jgcaap : as mentioned earlier, there is same but in your rom also.
Fingerprint sensor stops working some time, need to wake screen manually.
Also, torch gesture not working.
Please fix these issues.
Nothing happen when switching profiles by built-in button. Any idea how to fix that? I trying to change in settings few options but without solution.
Used your ROMs on the OPO.
Everything working great for now apart from the known CM bugs. FPS fails sometimes and alert slider not working?

Mine is working. After few reboot, it was alive.
So for now, the only bug is cm bug I think ( battery icon cannot be changed )

Ok, so far it's running great. I haven't gotten to really dig deep into it like I planned due to a busy day, but I did learn that YouTube still runs like trash. I honestly think it's the app, not the ROM, since it has been this way across several ROMs, and more than a couple devices. I found a little bit of screen flicker when plugged in and in landscape view. This cleared up immediately by disabling ambient display (which I don't think is even usable on the nooks anyway). Other than this, I have nothing to report, all is working as desired!

Ahh, good old amaces. He's been at it for a long time too! I bounce around ROMs from time to time depending on what I want to use my Ovation for. His ROMs are pretty solid and stable too, but I wanted to give old-school KK a try again. I've alwayse liked the split-screen menu layout it used over the newer versions too.

I used to have a working Hummingbird, but it's got a bad battery, and I haven't replaced it yet, so I'm not quite as versed on it as the Ovation anymore. I do know that he's got a following of people that test on the Hummingbird since he doesn't have one himself, and aside for trivial things like the boot screen's orientation being upside down, his' ROMs are known for being quite stable. I remember my Hummingbird feeling faster then my Ovation, but that's also due to the GPU not being taxed as hard as it is on that 1080p display. I remember I had MANY hours of use in on that Hummingbird with his ROMs at the hands of my kids. So much use the battery wore out. Never had any issues with it on the software side that I remember. Now you have me wondering if I can mod mine to fit an ovation-ish battery into it for longer life...

I haven't tried, or heard of before now, unlegacy on my ovation. So far, your ROM is a very well done re-release of CM11. As for the other, newer ROMs on Ovation, yes, they run quite well. I've only tried amaces' ROMs, and he put a lot of hours, and software tweaking magic into getting it to runt he way it does. I'm going to try this new stuff tonight I think. Just to see what it's about.
Update: I can't get Un-Legacy to boot, so I would say it's not as stable as hoped

Sorry, did you flash the LineageOS 11 (4.4.4) ROM or the 7.1.2 one also mentioned in this post? My previous experience with anything newer than KitKat on this device was that performance was too slow. I'm back on CM 11 at the moment but would be tempted to flash a newer ROM.

I flashed the recommended 7.1.2 and seems to work great for my use. I use it mostly as a media player in my shop. for google music, tunein, iHeart, and HDHomeRun, but HD HOMErun stops streaming after 30 seconds, must be due to 512meg memory on the system. But Plex works with out an issue.
Its connected to a car radio in my shop and works great and responsive. I do leave it plugged in beacuse its always in the same spot.

I do have both a hummingbird and Ovation - both on the old 4.4.4 ROMs as anything newer had too much lag. Which ROM exactly are you trying to install and what recovery version are you on? I seem to remember that the 4.x ROMs needed the old recovery to install.

What's the best Oreo ROM today?

By best I mean, lesser bugs. No scrolling stutter, good battery back up and etc.
I have tried Oreo ROMs before the official Oxygen Oreo comes out, now that it has been out for about a month (?). I think Oreo custom ROM has also improved. I just want your input guys. Thanks!
Also, don't include OxygenOS-based ROMs. So either AOSP or LineageOS-based.
BlackScreenOS
I've tried liquid remix, aicp, omnirom, aosip and the last come resurrection remix... Well i found that the last one is the better.. Long battery life, no lag, the rom is smooth and have all kind of personalizations
BUT i can't understand why i'm in completely mood with Oos 5.0.2 it's simply perfect imo... And i've been always the first to install a custom rom on my device
Now that substratum is working i think oos has nothing to envy at the other roms, rather it has face unlock oos cam etc... and it's for sure the smoothest rom on this phone
I haven't found one yet that fits your description. Tried DU, Screwed, Aquarios, Phoenix, Omni, Liquid Remix, AOKP and CrDroid. All have bugs, are less than smooth or both.
Best is subjective, but if you go with Codename Phoenix you won't regret!

I don't have your problems, maybe you have some apps/tweak cause this issues or simply Xposed / Module
The problem with DU is that the maintainer for this device decided to stop releasing RC builds after number two because *he has enough feedback" while other phones are getting updated DU builds. Unless you compile the source code yourself you are stuck with an outdated version of DU that is missing many of the ROMs features. I was a big fan of DU before buying an OP5 but on this phone it has never been anything but a substandard ROM. The Nougat version was buggy garbage and based on the attitude with the RC builds Oreo for the OP5 probably won't be any better.
I've only tried RR roms, lots of problems (maybe it's my fault, bad flash or idk) so I'm back to stock. I don't know why but since Oreo I can't go on custom rom, feels like they're more laggy.
cam on non OOS based roms are not very good imo. in oos (or xXx in my case) cam is perfect

How can I explain you brother? I am not the dev. But I am a user of this rom and all I can assure you is that it's fully working (Portrait mode, pro mode etc...). How, I don't know. But all I know is this: There is a great dev behind this great rom which is Codename Phoenix. His name is @siankatabg! He is one of the best devs I have ever known.

I think the other user was asking how you did it, how you installed OOS Camera on the ROM, does it come with OOS camera already? I'm in doubt too, and I'm using Omni ( with OOS camera from magisk mod) and I'm thinking of changing to CnP to check if it is really that good, I know you used both, what do you think?

When it comes to camera, Phoenix is the go! As I says OOS Cam is fully working. It's not pre-installed. Just download the latest apk from apk mirror and install it. There's a delay when starting up the camera, you will just need to wait a little bit, then everything works perfect. Even clearer picture than on OOS itself.

Could u provide the link?

a new rom? grass is always greener

Hi all,
Have been using the 1+5 since launch day, bought this beast at midnight on launch day and since then it's just amazed me....but I've been stuck picking a ROM due to the encryption decryption worry, I'm currently decrypted on xXx
What ROM are you using and why?
Not looking for the best, just for the points of why one over another.
Cheers.
Hi!

What do the other ROMs offer over OOS? If anything? Easier theming?

Different ROMs are build above different sources -- OOS, AOSP, LineageOS... -- and contain various modifications -- theming options, kernel tweaking, features ported from other devices, ability to streamline the system experience, stellar stability or release-early-release-often, etc. Every ROM is different, though at some point they offer more of less similar features -- eck, it's all Android at the core! Still, they represent what their devs feel is important for a joyful experience. Read the first post of a topic, you should have a general idea of what you get.

Thanks, maybe I didn't explain it enough, what I meant was what do you use and prefer and why?
What features sell you the ROM of your choice over others.
I think you can see by the amount of phones I've had that I've seen quite a few.
What are you using at the moment and why?
Benefit over OOS?
I've always been in love with Codename Phoenix, and I still am. I flashed everything there is out there, and every kernel. My conclusion: either OOS, or Phoenix. All the others either have some bugs or annoying problems. I choose Phoenix over OOS because it is just as smooth if not even smoother & faster while providing much more features than OOS. Also, 2 stable builds a month. That's much faster updates than OOS.

The guy deleted all of the G+ and xda threads, because he hated the drama. All he wanted to do at the end of the day is just share the builds he makes with his friends and his loyal users, so he only just has a telegram where he posts fully stable builds around two times per month. The rom also has OOS cam working. The ROM itself is closed source, but it's stellar, so I am sure there's a reason behind him making it closed source. I bet he is some ex developer of some other mainstream rom who really knows his stuff.
The rom that give Codename Phoenix a head to head competition is AOSIP, I have used both and settled down on latter.

Aye i was looking at that one, again though it aims towards encrypted devices, I'm currently decrypted and have fallen foul of the memory becoming unreadable and thus losing data before, that noverity is that all you flash after the rom?
ROM / Gapps / Noverity
In that order right?

I went with AICP, firmware 5.1 at this point is needed with it. Modded Gcam working, modded oneplus cam also working. Alot of features, uses LOS and others for base. if your a flashaholic like myself they have nightlies close to every night even. If you want a custom kernel most of the LOS compatble ones (EX, Flash, Franco) work. Battery life is great, and I like the feature set. Eneough tweaking I dont need substratum to have the look I want. Using Magisk 14.4 beta for root. solid eneough to be a daily driver for sure. Bluetooth works perfect for me as well, no wifi issues.
Still using Pure Fusion 7.1.2, as it's aosp-based yet has oos camera fully working(with portrait and slow-mo).

To put Phoenix on my OP5 and not lose data...
In TWRP:
1. Wipe everything but internal storage...
2. Flash Phoenix
3. Flash GAPPS
4. Flash Magisk
Done?

Not a worry for me that, I've got a Lumie that gets brighter in the morning and tweets at me, wakes me up better than a normal alarm.
How's theming on pure fusion? Been having some issues with my preferred theme lately, in fact so many themes these days don't work.
Google just wants to be lighter and lighter, how they haven't got a dark side I'll never know.
Besides robbing everyone's data
Just like OP, i'm running xXx oos based rom since the beginning, and i'm pretty happy with it.
I'm interested in trying some custom roms, but i've read almost everywhere that custom roms can't get close to camera quality of OOS, is this still true ?
I don't mind flashing any magisk camera mod module if that could help :good:

what is the best custom rom for the espressowifi

in performance, battery life etc. :good:
i have omni 6 rn
performace is good but battery life was better in 7
or maybe my battery is trash
Derivative

I currently have Unlegacy Android 7.1.2 June 2020 build installed, but i'm planning to downgrade. Is omni roms a derivative of some other rom or is it independent? I don't like Lineage OS 13 and Slim 6 is a derivative of LOS. I have not tried omni 6 as of now.
I just got this tablet from a friend. I tried factory reset on the existing stock rom it had, I installed 4 different custom roms and I then went back to stock rom(4.2.2). This thing is so friggin laggy. Was there ever a time(rom) that this thing worked properly? I just want it for browsing, and it takes FOREVER to load a page(if it loads at all). As is, it is a useless piece of junk.
yeah I've just found it inside a closed. Flashed a few "newish roms" and it lags a lot even in the UI and random issues like Missing the top menu until I go into settings.
Will try to go back to 4.x and see if it lags there too. I remember it to be usable once booted.
It seems to heat a lot. Don't know if these things have a thermal paste.
edit cm11 2020 update works ok. but i need 5.0 up
try slim roms. i just flashed 6.0 and seems fine, 2020 security updates on andi's website

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles. Out of those 4 custom roms you've tried, were any of them based off android 6? If all of them were android 7 based, then there's the problem. As of now, any custom rom based off android 7 are unstable. If you want stability, then go with Unlegacy Android 6, Lineage OS 13, Slim6 and Omni6(highly recommended).

And the heating isn't exactly the rarest thing for this thing. If you want to sacrifice some of the apps you may use that require gapps then ditch google services entirely it improves performance and battery
Then for YouTube use vanced and for the app store use aurora
