Root LG V20 918-10r - LG V20 Questions & Answers

How to Root LG V20 918-10r?

There is no root available right now for 10R or custom recovery due to the security patches that have been rolled out. Since H91810j anything after 10j is ARB firmware ( anti roll back ) so no downgrading to anything lower than H91810p . I'm sure there's ppl working on it ( root ) and recovery. Designing root and recovery for each individual security patch is a lot of work and trying to force a rollback exploits is high risk due to Q fuse blowing and forever bricking the phone or send it back to LG ( long wait times ) . I think the best route to getting this device to full root and recovery is by downgrading it's firmware and finding a loop hole for ARB so H91810j can be rolled back and once that's achieved we will be golden. I was on 10r i rolled back to 10p and sit here waiting for the ball to drop.

I have an unlocked bootloader but have 10r on my phone.... Unlocked bootloader sitting there being all useless and lonely with no friends like twrp recovery no root no xposed to play with.... My poor Poor bootloader

Haha, same here and in the past it's normally the BL that was the problem to unlock. The biggest thing we need is just to get these phones to roll back and disarm ARB. I feel bad i can't contribute to the cause or i would and to get the justification of saying T-mobile & LG nice try but your ARB can beat it. Out of all the things to worry about and lock down is to choose what version of 7.0 Nougat your on and it's the same version it shipped with, lol spending more time with security than actual OS updates.

So, H918, never touched with 10r, I'm SOL?
The phone lags something crazy, particularly running Android auto (means connected via USB and charging) and trying to dictate things, using Nav, playing podcasts. Rebooting doesn't help. Sent in one phone, got another one with the same problem. So, the phone is useless? Just don't try to do anything heavy with it, is that where it is?

VZ LG GPad 8.3 OTA VK81024A

04/17/2015 Update to this posting; -24A OTA rooted 1st time using Stump after dozens of Brute Force fails on 23A-
Can anyone else confirm Stump Root working for 24A on their own devices?
Original Stump Thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development/root-stump-root-lg-g3-sprint-verizon-t2850906
New OTA software update VK81024A just released this week. From what I've read and VZW's PDF, the only thing that was changed was 4G LTE coverage. In my experience with Verizon, they only release updates for this device to patch root methods and add bloat. This would have been my 3rd update to my GPad (had I accepted) without measurable positive impact. I personally cannot believe that they spent the time and money to fix LTE coverage that, in my experience, had no noticeable issue to begin with.
I would still be waiting for Lollipop on my VZ G3, if I didn't go ahead and root/ROM just last month. With the Lollipop ROM being available to the Korean G3 as early as November of LAST YEAR, my faith in Verizon getting us the updates we want and deserve (I purchased a flagship phone, and a popular tablet) is nonexistent.
Okay, I'm done ranting (for now) about the "Great Satan" that is VZW...the only carrier with good coverage here in my area of NY. Does anyone have any experience with this update? Anyone try rooting it (maybe Stumproot will start working again)? I am tempted to accept it if I could assist the community by doing so. Please tell me your thoughts.
VK810 OTA update from 23A to 24A keeps root
For both of my VK810 tablets on 23A:
Previously rooted 4.4.2 w/ Stump.
SuperSU marked w/ "survival mode". Given my history with the LG G3 keeping root w/o needing "survival mode", I doubt that setting "survival mode" was necessary. However, given the pain I went through to root one of my VK810 tablets right out of the box, I decided to keep it set.
The OTA update (still v4.4.2) to VK810-24A kept root.
The referenced Verizon web page ( http://www.vzw.com/lggpadsupport ) for update info shows very minor changes: http://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/benefits-lg-gpad-83-4-1-15.pdf
Just got mine this morning. Hadn't been using the tablet for a few days. Would not take OTA. Downloaded the file but kept kicking an error. Ended up hooking it up USB and using the upgrade assistant. Paranoia got the better of me and I "unrooted" first. Brute force stump (climbed to 6800 I think) did the trick just like before. Must say I was disappointed. I had not read what the "upgrade" consisted off but figured since they jumped from 23A to 24A it would be something substantial. I notice some minor cosmetic changes but that's about it. The 4gLTE "Update: or "Upgrade" isn't going to make much difference in my neck of the woods. 3G is about the best you can hope for here in this little town for the time being.

Did the same thing as you, OTA installed and still rooted
This did not happen to me, I am using this same tablet and rooted with TWRP installed. When I tried to let the OTA install I got stuck in a boot loop and had to use some terminal commands inside of TWRP to fix the issue. I keep getting bothered with this upgrade notice and I don't know how to stop it. I am pretty sure if I try to let it update I will be stuck in a boot loop again. I don't want the damn update.

On every Android device, if you want to take an OTA, you have to either be 100% stock, or at least have stock recovery, kernel, bootloader, and other partitions, and only have done minor things with the system partition - not have debloated at all.

If the LG Mobile Support Tool factory restores the whole phone (recovery included) then this may be the best option till someone posts the KDZ with rooted 24A. This was my root method and it may work for you.
After searching through forums for weeks looking for viable root options (rollback and Purplerake or Towelroot, ADB scripting, and all others) and running Stump as often as I remembered (probably 30 times on 23A) I finally have it! I didn't see any up to date threads on rooting the VK810 and all the old threads had too many broken links to actually perform the steps.
Here's how it went down;
1.) Installed the latest LG USB drivers from LG's site ( http://tool.xcdn.gdms.lge.com/dn/downloader.dev?fileKey=UW00520120427 ).
2.) Download LG Mobile support tool ( https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B687...p2NlhhalU/edit ).
3.) Run the LG Mobile Support Tool program.
4.) Switched tablet USB mode to "Internet Connection / Ethernet" and after a few moments the LG Tool recognized my VK810.
5.) In LG Tool, click on "Options -> Upgrade Recovery" on the upright corner.
6.) It should start downloading stock firmware right away, if it says "Downloading" but there is no file size or progress, then you need to disable firewall.
7.) After the download, it will start "Upgrading".
8.) When the tablet rebooted I was on the latest VZW VK81024A which shocked me because I thought it was going to put the factory image (JB 4.2), but not to give up hope, I retried Stump...1st time rooted the thing!
9.) Followed Stump Root's directions (Reboot after app tells you to, Install SuperSU APK from market, Uninstall StumpRoot) and poof!
10.) Enjoy rooted 24A KitKat
It is very possible that 24A broke the fix VZW had for 23A (even though many people had success with 23A) and one need only take 24A OTA to Stumproot if they were not able to prior, but this is how my experience went down.
MANY thanks to @roirraW "edor" ehT, @jcase, & @jim380 for producing the threads and software that led to my rooting.

H91010m forced update, now unrootable?

Just bought the V20 because it was the only att phone with possibility of root. Had it 3days and it kept telling me to install update (had auto update turned off). Wanted to read into the posts about how to root. Overnight it installed on its own. Now I'm assuming I'm stuck. I still have a week (this week) left to return it. I'm thinking maybe return under the guise of wanting a different color one just to get one still running the December security patch. Any ideas?
Deserteagleslm, I don't know the answer to your question, but is it possible for you to try and find the actual OTA file(s) on your phone and send them to me? I tried the OTA on my H910 and now it's stuck in a bootloop. If I had the 174mb OTA file at i'm thinking I can use LGUP to do the FOTA option and recover my phone during the upgrade.
thanks
Any idea what folder it would be in or where? If so ill upload to my mega cloud
Look, all I know is for $829 I'm taking this v20 back to att and switching for a new one, within 2 wee return period, and getting another one, turning off updates thru development options so I can root the damn thing. I had a Galaxy S4 that I rooted 2 days after getting it few yrs back and never "upgraded" due to newer phones not having root possibilities. I'm not pissing away that $$$$ on this damn v20..... Yes I'm drunk and mad right now.

XT1622 Nougat Root Questions

Just flashed my XT1622 (UK Moto G4, NOT the plus version) using Nougat stock rom with September security patch(https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138). Thanks @tywinlannister7 who made the guide. It worked smoothly although it's in Moto G4 Plus forum.
Now, I got some questions regarding root. I did a forum search to find the post (https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...de-root-moto-g4-plus-supersu-android-t3587918), which is quite good actually. However, I flashed my xt1622 for two reasons. The first is to upgrade to the latest system - Nougat (well, it not 'the latest' at the moment). The second is because I flashed TWRP on Marshmallow immediately after buying my Moto G4 to get root access, which stopped me to update the phone via OTA for a long time. I can still get the OTA notification, but it just won't let me update - failed after ~20 minutes. So what I did is just manually delay the update notification for 24 hours every day at 12.00pm. It bothered me a lot so I decided to go for a clean flash.
By flashing the new system, I lost some features I used quite a lot.
1. The root access for sure. I am not going to flash TWRP this time in case new patches would come over OTA again. If I flashed TWRP, I will face the same issue as I was on Marshmallow before this flashing. Is it possible to root without flashing TWRP that stops me to update over OTA?
2. I used to flash a specially made logo.bin to prevent the unlocked bootloader screen to appear. Now on Nougat, is there any similar logo.bin to do the same? A download link would be appreciated.
3. I used Llama with different profiles for some automated work such as change alarm volume at home or at workplace, make the phone ring loudly everywhere else, switch to flight mode at 12.00am at midnight and go back at 6.00am in the morning, automatically restart my phone at 1.00am while I am sleeping, and so on. This app won't work properly without root access. - well, looks like we go back to the first question of gaining root access.
Thanks for reading anyway.

US996 - Can you unlock bootloader and root and still receive an OTA OS update

Want to root this for some apps (Greenify, SD Maid) but holding off as was not sure if a bootloader unlocked rooted device will receive the OTA OS update that this model will eventually never get (Oreo mid Jan 2019??)
I hear Lineage 15.X behaves like stock w the second screen and Hi-Fi bits, so in actuality I may just blow off LG and go custom very soon anyway.

I'm pretty sure if your bootloader is unlocked you can still get an OTA update just as long as you don't have twrp or any other system mods. But if you're going to be waiting until next year to get Oreo, take like a hour out of your day, learn how to flash it, and get Oreo right now with a custom rom.
Lineage is really nice, I'd recommend Lineage 15.1. Gamma kernel is a must too and if I recall correctly the DAC automatically starts if headphones that can use it are plugged in. Regardless of the DAC I'm sure there's other audio tweaks and stuff.
I'm sure the second screen builds aren't that far behind the normal non second screen builds but I'm going with no second screen.
I remember boredsigns works well too, and Lineage 16.1 uses the second screen like a notch but isn't really to be used as a daily driver, even with gamma kernel.
Here's an article that talks about why ota's break things when rooted. This is why flashable zips are made (and usually posted on this forum) to get the updates without breaking things.
Thanks all, been flashing customs for years BTW, but decided to go a bit slower to learn stock as at the time the custom roms were not so mature. Using boredsigns now w stock.
On the fact OTA updates break TWRP, then given the choice to keep waiting for LG to use stock w Oreo - guess i'll move on to customs. 15.1 Lineage has a option that uses second screen.

trying to understand between root bootloader and flashing rom

my first g6 had a broken screen last week. me being abusive to it. from frustration.
bought a used g6 as a backup very quickly but im not liking v9.0
id like to install the first 7.0 version it ever had available H870. I have 3 apps total installed more of a pro privacy advocate so no browser and would like to shut those annoying update popups which are extremely intrusive and come at the worst times. would like to block as much as possible to also have battery life
I dont understand what the roo does, what the bootloader does and I understand I need to flash a kdz rom. if I understand, I need to install 7.0 (not 7.1 or later) then use the root and bootloader to block updates notifications and to remove default apps in the phone.. basically tweak system things...is this correct?
I used to tinker with windows mobile back in the days but after years of fear of bricking and only have one phone, I had to suffer through annoyances in the OS they give. it is time to have a phone that doesnt annoy me and isnt intrusive. I really do need calmness after 18 months of hell with covid.
inevitably I will move to pinephone once it gets mature. for now using this g6. I dont run after the newest models.
any insight or experiences or tips you could throw at me would be appreciated as I think i may be mixing things up
stay afe
i have a used H870 here. Did the root+twrp, up to PIE and tryed/flashed many things, but wasn´t that happy at all. That was a few month ago. A week ago I replaced my battery and tada, sweet runner. So again I wanted more and bricked it to "no sim" after restoring from a kernel here. Since there isnt much for Pie, roms, deadlinks, broken twrp etc. the only tool which worked and helped me was LG bridge to restore to latest stock pie.
I would recommend u to root without recovery via magisk/fastboot method and go for some adaway, acc battery charger, lsposed + gravity, debloat and maybe a kernel manager + etc.
dont forget, when u have sporadic lags, go for the battery.
gl on ur way mate

ps just for info
the only working usb drivers where delivered via the LG bridge tool driver update for me, i tryed many..
