Advice needed - mako crashing shutdown - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Firstly thanks for all the invaluable advice from these forums over the years.
My partners nexus 4 has started frequently crashing to power-off. Possibly since using a cheap charger on a trip overseas. It was on stock OS. We thought that would be a good reason to root and install LineageOS which I have used on my phone without a glitch. It didn't solve the problem though, it would boot if plugged into power and could be used, but on battery it would quickly crash if asked to do anything but idle.
Now it seems to be even worse, crashes on boot, even plugged in. I can get to recovery (twrp) but crashes if I try to sideload any other kernel or ROM file.
Is this likely a hardware issue? Considering trying a new battery, but that's only a guess...
Or could it be resolved in software? If so, any top tips getting new files onto the SD card? (This is where I wish the nexus 4 has an SD slot!)
Thanks!

Most likely a battery issue. A new battery (avoid cheap substitutes) is likely to solve the crashes.

Hello, I have exactly the same problem. I bought two different batteries and the problem is still there on both. Is it possible that it is due to the usb charge connector ? I am waiting for two pieces.

Sorry, forgot to report outcome - a replacement quality battery totally fixed the issue. Running LineageOS like a dream

N910W8 - Interesting reboot loop and battery drain issue

Hi everyone,
Not new here - I been using this forum for 2 years now, just without an account.
I have an interesting issue with my note 4 or maybe (hopefully) someone can point me to the right forum and prove my searching skills to be of an novice level for my particular case.
I have a stock (Canadian) N910W8 with the stock battery (EB-BN910BBU). Everything is stock. Running Android 6.0.1.
The phone has, I believe a battery issue, however it's not like any other ones on the forum. Regardless of what % the sucker reboots and loops rebooting and won't stop restarting until I pull the battery. However, when the phone is plugged in it works like a charm - nothings wrong. So yes it's definitely a power issue but is it the battery itself? The battery isn't warped or deformed in any way physically (From my understanding previous model's batteries did). I'm planning to buy an OEM battery but I thought it's best if I come on here and check with the pros first. What do you guys think?
If it indeed is just the battery issue then what battery should I go with? I researched ANKER and found that it has a good initial usage rating but a lot of people report that the battery starts losing charge and being unable to charge entirely after weeks - to months. Any perspective or direction is appreciated. Cheers!
Did you try factory resetting the phone first, it could be a software issue because in order for it to bootloop the battery has to be functional, it could be a rogue app just causing mayhem, another clue is the battery drain witch is most likely software related as well. Before buying a battery try a factory reset.

Thank you sir! Great suggestion.
So I have very interesting results. I did the factory reset and it fixed everything. And when the samsung android OS asked for me to update for a new version I did - and the problem came back. After being appalled by the fact that the update itself (from samsung) was doing this I did the factory reset again. And yep - everything is fixed and fine 'n' dandy.
CONCLUSION: DON'T DO THE SYSTEM UPDATE ON NOTE 4 (Canada) IF YOU'RE HAVING POWER ISSUES AND IT LOOP BOOTS.

Unusable Note 4 Overheating, I think

I have a Note 4 that is stock that started randomly restarting. Then it couldn't even boot all the way up. I noticed it was getting very hot near the sim card. After letting it sit for a day, and cool off, I think. I was able to get into stock recovery and do a factory reset before it froze again. However, it still can't even boot all the way to the welcome screen. I assume it is a hardware issue. Any advice on what to repair/replace to fix this? Is it the motherboard? Thanks.
Hi, you could try to flash the stock ROM of the Android version that you're using. If that doesn't help, it's most likely an hardware issue and you have to send it to Samsung or get it repaired otherwise if possible.
Thanks. I am pretty sure it is the motherboard that has gone bad. It won't stay powered on long enough to flash a rom.

Can you access the download mode of your device long enough? If yes, you could use the software Odin to flash the ROM.
If no, I guess nothing than Samsung itself can help you.
when my note 4 died suddenly during the day- having had issues like freezing, laggin and restarting since MM6.0.1- I thought it was ready for the burial but I read online somewhere- too many google pages LOL- to take the battery out, put it to chill in the fridge for 10 mins (I left mine in for 30), take it out and put the battery back in . Totally resuscitated!
Now using Wakelock app and all is- fingers crossed- well i.e.: no more lagging, freezing etc.
(I somehow could not flash custom firmware using my Mac after 3 tries- )
That's EXACTLY the case with mine right now, did you figure out the problem and if you did would you please be so kind and tell us what was it, i'm majorly desperate, i'm thinking a short circuit.

Sorry, no. I was going to replace the motherboard, but didn't find a good deal on one and gave up.

Thanks for the quick reply, guess i should probably follow up too, i'll try to remove the shorting using Elma's solution and if it doesn't work i'll just throw it out, a new motherboard costs as much as a whole new phone, and yeah your Note 4 was shorted as well, most likely due to a poor quality battery or a bad Charger/USB cable or excessively using it while charging.

N910C overheating?

Hello!
Just got a note 4 from my friend to play with since he's not using it anymore. The problem is that the phone heats up a lot whenever its on, even if the screen is off.
My guess is that the processor receives too much power from the battery? Or is it possible that the problem is related to the CPU? Or is it the battery?
Right now im tempted to buy a new replacement battery just to see if the battery is the problem. But i hope for some advice if you guys have experienced this before. Thanks!
Update 1: Changed the battery. The drain is much slower compared to before but the phone still gets really hot. Any idea why?
I have the same problem. I am not sure why overheating happens but I think about few things: constant Wi-Fi activity, a lot of installed apps, low free memory.
I just ordered a battery to see if its the problem
Yesterday my phone was very hot and very slow. I thought battery can't be the reason but I was wrong. I replaced my few months used battery with my old one and phone worked normally. So battery can be the reason for overheating.

BlissRom is very old, did u try anything new like Nemesis? It has very good kernel also, SpaceLemon. Try it and see if your problems are solved.

I tried nemesis and erobot but they were pretty laggy since i had to use minimum clock speeds or else it gets hard to hold the phone cause of the heat. Also i think one of them had spacelemon kernel but i couldnt change the clock speeds and the phone became unbearably hot so i quicky changed to bliss then superstock
Got a new battery today will pop it in when i get home.

When im in the OS yes it does. But when i was in TWRP last night it was pretty normal unlike the time before the new battery. Also the idle drain is disturbingly fast i left it on last night and when i woke up today it was fully drained. Still trying to find out if there are apps causing the drain
Maybe latest firmware cause that. I am planning to flash 5.1.

I will also try that
Please post the results.
It runs relatively cooler (like cool enough that i can use it without a case without burning my hand, it just gets warm) on rulinglite rom which is on the 5.1.1 version so it does have something to do with the firmware maybe. The battery still drains too much though even in safe mode so im not sure anymore on whats the problem on my note 4

Unfortunately nothing i try fixes the overheating i read at a note 5 forum that his phone overheats constantly because of the too many charging cycles probably damaged the motherboard. I think that might be the cause of overheating here too.
Also no problem with unmounting or anything else. Just the overheating and the massive battery drain even when the screen is off

Sad to say that these note 4's probably cant be used as daily drivers anymore i have to charge mine to every 3 hours lol since thats all the battery life it can give on a single full charge
Such a shame since the screen is so good and the camera is super crisp too. I will probably just use it for some daylight photography haha
Have you tried simpl rom?
Using genuine samsung batteries or 3rd party?
NFC on,bluetooth etc?
Tried with mem card and sim out?
Which model you have, exynos or qualcomm?
Have 2x910C here and no probs.

I have C version of Note 4. I bought new battery but I still have problem with overheating and random memory card unmounting. I have a lot of applications and latest firmware. I didn't tried to use 5.1.1 firmware and don't know how to solve this problem.

Bootloop in a strange manner

Hi folks, I recently upgraded from Nougat to Oreo.
I don't think this is a ROM problem but it's so odd that I can't figure it out.
My Samsung Note 4 keeps on rebooting. If I keep it on charge it stays on. If I pull the charging cable off it stays on with no problem.
It starts to bootloop if I play a game for couple of minutes but if I reconnect the charging cable, the phone works as usual.
What can be wrong?
Thank you for the help.

The new battery I ordered is on the way but from my research, it could be faulty memory or even the motherboard. I'm really taking a risk for such an old phone but I really love it except I need to under-volt to bring the temperature down.

You may try to install the WakeLock V3 from Play Store, see how it goes.
It's the battery. The weird bootloop no longer happens once I replaced the battery. I really love these phones with replaceable batteries.
Glad you found the issue only on battery. Mine was suffered from a real eMMC issue but they were all fixed for now, still running MM 6.0.1 stock rom.

Stock 8 Pro suddenly died

Hey all,
My stock 8+ Pro that I've had for 2.5 years will not turn on or charge. I was rebooting it with about 30% battery left before it became non-responsive. I tried the various methods of booting in safe mode but nothing. I just swapped the battery for a new one but still nothing.
Before this I had zero issues with the phone. The battery was slowly losing life but nothing drastic. I was prompted for a system update 3ish weeks ago that I had not gotten around to. I saw a comment while I was googling fixes that might point to the outdated software being a cause of the problem? Is there anything I can try at this point or am I looking at a brick?
Thanks in advance.

Normally these phones die automatically after their end date and it happens with the new updates that apple sends to the phones... I had the same problem before with my i phone 7 and I had to get a newer version

Huh what? I still have an OP 3 from 2016, a 5T from 2017 and a Samsung Tablet from 2016, all running fine on custom roms.
There is no "auto destruct" in our devices ... no idea about Apple ones, but Android definitely not.
@mw182006 - if all else fails then try to use MSM to revive the device, but that WILL factory reset it and you'll lose all data.
Well obviously you have to go through sh**t to take it back to life

My guess: the motherboard is gone. You'll have to replace it or buy a new phone (better option).

Unfortunately, YES, unless you take it to a repair shop that specialises in data recovery. Company service centers won't be of any help.

Fortunately I'm in China and they are wizards with this stuff, so I'm hopeful this can be salvaged without wiping everything. Thanks again for the replies.
