XT1607 ROM Recommendation for dedicated hotspot - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

I'm planning to root my XT1607 and use it as a dedicated hotspot.
Can someone recommend a good ROM and tether app for this purpose?
I guess I'm just looking for stability and the highest performance I can get from the tethering app.
Thanks for your help.

I regularly use my rooted/unlocked XT1607 as a hotspot both WiFi (primarily) and for Bluetooth tethering. Both work fine on STOCK MM. No need to got the custom ROM route or use a dedicated tethering app for this functionality.
As for performance and stability I have never had an issue with either even at extreme ranges. Download speeds match carrier capability on WiFi; bluetooth max when going that route.

Thanks Davey126. I don't _think_ my carrier will allow me to tether without an additional fee. I could be wrong about that. I've noticed my old unlimited lines don't seem to have the tether option on any of the phones I've used them with.
I'll certainly give that a shot once I get the phone.

There are certainly ways around any technical restrictions without having to go the custom ROM route. A few carriers look for usage patterns that suggest some form of tethering may be be use; no tweak or ROM can get mitigate that. Haven't heard too much about that lately.

You don't need any rom for that, better use an app like PdaNet+ or Easy Tether. In my opinion PdaNet+ is the best choice.
PdaNet+: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdanet
(In 7.0+ roms you can't use wifi mode)
Easy Tether: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mstream.easytether_beta

Or just use the native ROM tethering options unless they prove unsatisfactory. A tethering app adds unnecessary complexity if stock works.

[Q] How to use Epic as mobile hotspot

Ok one of the reasons I mainly got this phone was the mobile hotspot feature because the internet at my college blows and it would be nice for everyone to be able to browse the internet in a single dorm and not just 2 people. Unfortunately Sprint has made it so this feature costs an addition 25 with your bill. I don't pay the bill so this isn't an option for me. I heard that if you root the epic, you can use the mobile hotpot feature for free. I haven't rooted it yet but I have the z4 root application on my phone. So how can I go about doing this?
Run z4root and then download and run wireless tether. Its not on the market so google it and you will find the latest version. I don't recall whether it will run on a stock kernel; if not you'll want to install a custom rom.
Sent from my Bonzai'd Epic 4g.
It is usually usable only on the Eclair build when rooted. Sometimes not ;-)

Ok I found a hit on google for wireless tether on google code. The only samsung glaxy device I saw said it ran on 1.5 but I'm on 2.1 so it should work right. I'm not sure if the device listed works with epic but it said galaxy device. Also will sprint notice the increase of data usage and charge me more?
Nope, unless you start dl movies.

So standard internet browsing should be fine then?
Your expectations are unrealistic and this is a really easy subject to search for.
I don't unerstand how my expectations are unrealistic but thanks for the responses anyways.

Here you. Root and wifi tether and other stuff all in one. Easy menu.

If you are on 2.1 the best way is to get clockwork (use the one click root) then find mobile ap in the dev section and apply the zip. Way more stable than wireless tether in my experience.

Thanks much Jay. Gonna give that link the once over before I mess with the phone itself. Thanks ipaq as well. I'll check that out if I find any problems with the one in Jay's link.
Definitly if you are staying on stock rom, use mobile ap, it is soooooooooo much better then wireless tether, and if you follow my tutorial after rooting and getting clockwork first you can have themes with it too.
I think what he's trying to say about your expectations is you think you can do this and give everyone internet on your dorm. Do you know how slow that will run? Also you can only connect so many devices at one time. I don't know how many for wireless tether but mobile AP is 5. Yes wireless tether is a great feature its just not going to meet your expectations for helping a while dorm out.

Am I missing the OP's question that Sprint called this device a mobile hotspot?? Is Sprint lying?
If you don't pay the $30 a month charge for hotspotting, will Sprint find out and charge you any extra if you tether your phone after rooting it?

Ive been tethering since i had windows mobile, and ive never been in trouble, just dont download movies or any other big files. I mean its not even worth it to download movies takes too long anyhow. Just dont take your phone in rooted with that app on it or then u might get into some trouble.
If you have an epic 4g you have unlimited (truely unlimited) data...they are not going to say anything regardless of how much data you use. That being said spint will not Check the status of your phone (root or un rooted). You are go to go on tethering

Yeah, I don't plan on doing anything crazy like torrenting. I'd use this to tether my iPad if I'm in an airport or on a long trip, or maybe if I'm on vacation and don't wanna pay $10-30 for the hotel's wifi. That's all. Nothing mundo crazy where I'm using gigs of transfers.
Thanks for letting me know!
I have a question that I hope someone here can answer.
I've toyed with the idea of installing one of the hotspot programs. But, I'm very wary of surfing the Net without a NAT/firewall between my Windows box and the Net. Do these programs provide firewall-type protection to the machines that are surfing through them?

[Q] 2 questions

hi folks.. I have a couple questions.
1. Can I tether (via USB) my A7 to my non-rooted Sprint evo.. if so what tethering app do I use?
2. I have a Verizon USB 3g modem... can I use it with my tablet? What program do I use?
Thanks all keep up the great work..

No on both counts.
So.... rooting my evo.. I love it as it is.. how much better is it rooted.. I am tempted because of free WiFi... but from a functional stand point it is pretty good stock..

I rooted mine with unrevoked3.
The biggest reason I did it was for wifi tethering.
root + Wireless Tether (available from market) = joy
If you are not going to be running custom roms and such, the only difference you will notice is an app called "Superuser Permissions" in your app drawer... And the superficial feeling of superiority over most other (normal) Evo users due to the fact that your phone now does what you want, and theirs still doesn't
Edit: after rooting, only use the tether app for tethering and DO NOT use the HotSpot app that came with the phone. That is, unless you actually want to pay Sprint $30 extra a month to actually be able to use your "unlimited" data plan.

Wifi tether without root?

Just moved from an HTC Rezound to the EVO 4G. My Nexus 7 and Rezound are rooted running custom ROM's, the Rezound was S-Off.
New EVO 4G though, I would like to keep close to stock for warranty purposes. All I really need is wifi tether to work so I can give occasional internet access to my tablet. With VZW, I averaged 2-3gb a month max, between the phone and tablet combined. So my data usage is not heavy, but I do need to tether from time to time.
I searched and found several apps for tethering a laptop through a USB cable, but that won't work for the tablet.
So is there a simple and effective wifi tether app that I can sideload to the phone, even if there is a cost for the app? Or do I have to root to get the standard Google Wifi Tether app? If I have to root, I don't think I need S-Off and all sorts of stuff that could cause a warranty issue in the future. Whatever the absolute minimum required to get Wifi Tether will suffice.
Thanks!

I've heard you can tether via bluetooth with FoxFi, but I've never tried it myself. If all you want is to surf the web on your tablet that may be enough for you.
If you try it do let me know how it went.

The latest ota breaks foxfi. I think that root is my only option. What's the simplest method? I don't need s-off or custom Roms, just root for tethering.
Here you go. It's the HTCdev method (assuming you're on Hboot 2.18) which will give you an unlocked bootloader and root.

I'm still on 2.2. I had a bad experience rooting the first time, so I've been hesitant to flash a newer ROM. At some point I'll work up the courage and flash a 2.3 ROM. So the long and the short of it is: I won't be of much help. But look around the forum. Plenty of folks can help you.

Best Tether App (w/Root)

Any suggestions on the best Tether app now that Root has been acheived? Is FoxFi still our best bet even though we have Root now? Thanks!

Root won't automatically give you tether. Most ROMs that come out have this enabled.
Confirmed, FoxFi is still working. I will be testing WiFi Tether Router this weekend.
Now that we have root, I'm going to attempt the same methods I used with the L90 via build prop editing and a database change. Hopefully it'll prevent the data from being logged.
This would be helpful.
A modified HotspotProvisioning would be the best and most light weight solution, I know the VS986 has this accomplished (in the General subforum), but I'm not sure about other models.
My H815 (TWN) has a "Hot Spot" feature that works out of the box. Is that because the phone is carrier unlocked? Or does everyone have that? It's in my status bar 'power controls' section. However, I have WiFi Tether Router installed as a backup, haven't tested it (came over from my G3).
There is a thread already about how to enable Native Android wifi tethering. It is a simple ADB command and a reboot. You don't even need ROOT. I've done it already on my Verizon model and I am not rooted yet.
It is posted in the G4 Apps forums I think. Although a google search would pull it up.

Yeah, I knew that Root wouldn't automatically enable it, that's why I asked for the best app to go along with it.

Must be nice.
The G2 also had built in Wireless Storage (a samba server) for accessing your G2 storage via local IP that had an option in the notification tray as a toggle. I don't think anyone has ever figured out how to move it to other devices outside of flashing the roms of phones that had it enabled.
HotSpot and a Wireless Storage port would be awesome.

Carriers offer free tethering with limited plans. If you are on a unlimited plan, it cost extra. It cost $30 a month to add it to my plan.
I did what he said in this video and got tethering working in a few minutes.

It seems very simple and root isn't even needed.
There is a code that ends with #*# that doesn't work with sprint so this video is what I needed.

Native Hotspot

Is their a custom Rom with Native Hotspot Available? or a rooted Guide to a achieving native hotspot for the Moto Z force?
If you're on verizon, no... In fact, to the best of my knowledge, even if you're not on Verizon a custom ROM with room hasn't been released yet.
I tried a NUMBER of different apps to create a hot spot with zero luck. Tethered via BT was the best option without root.

Yes, usually it is, at least on Verizon in the US. They want you to buy their tethering plan... get as much money from you as possible.

I can't really say. Phone had 7.0 when I got it. All android versions run together for me, tbh. They always say the new one fixes all the issues with the old one, but I can never really tell a difference. Been around since 1.6/Donut.
O alright. Well thanks for your help. Guess I'll give it a shot and hope for the best
Alright so there was one update in between the version I had and a second 7.0 that wouldn't let me do it. I'm on the one before the volume fix that I'm assuming just came out and it works. I'm not gonna do the next one as I need the hotspot feature so if someone wants to confirm on the latest then they can update the thread.
