Pure Nexus is happening! - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Just saw this post from beans and damn finally what the most of us want
Cheers ?

cant wait

My favorite rom for nexus 6P
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using XDA-Developers Legacy app

Wow, been about 6 months already. Time flies. Will be good to see it on P2. Loved it on 6p

Best rom news to date!

That's awesome, it helped breathe new life into my N6 for a year before getting the Pixel 2XL

Can't wait, way too excited!!

Nice. PN was the only ROM I used on my 6P.

It was a great rom in the Pixel XL.. Glad to hear it will be here soon for the Pixel 2 XL.

Pure nexus is cool but I would love a resurrection remix rom!

just a curiosity question what made pure nexus so good? this is my first google phone so im already really enjoying it and all its features espically the frequent updates.

Would really love RR ROM though but equally as excited about PN!

Oh heavens, where does one begin. First and foremost, the developer. Beans, is a tireless perfectionist when it comes to his roms. He welcomes input from users, and corrects bugs ASAP. Just do a search on PN roms. You'll quickly figure out why he has such a great fan base ??

It has so many features not found in stock ROM. Off the top of my head the things I miss are:
1. Hold down power for two seconds to toggle flashlight.
2. Rearrange and customize navigation bar (I prefer back button on right side).
3. Separate notification and ringer volume.
4. Night mode which not only tints the screen but also lowers the brightness (what good is tinting the screen in the dark if it's still full blast?)
5. Hide carrier and lock screen shortcuts for a clean screen. And ESPECIALLY being able to hide the alarm time.
But seriously there are probably dozens more options I use that I'm not thinking of right now.

a few of those sound pretty nice i think the pixel 2 xl has a night mode already lol. but i like the idea of being able to hide the lockscreen stuff alot i hated that they made that the standard. does it run a custom kernel?

Stock ROM has "Night Light" which just puts a tint on the screen. Still keeps it full brightness though.
I believe it does actually use a custom kernal by default, but you can use whatever kernal you want.

ah ok when ever ive used it always seemed so much dimmer after it tinted it but that could have been me on battery saver too lol. ok cool thanks far all the info

Best news for today. That's the only ROM I've used on my 6p and og Pixel XL. Can't wait!

Stock is so good but somehow Beans' PureNexus makes it so much better. Can't wait for this.

are you spoiled too?

i love froyo! its ultra fast and ultra smooth, but.... these threads seem to always have "buts." anywho, custom roms have dominated my phone from the beginning and the small things(spare parts/extra mods), as others have mentioned, have a pretty big impact on usability and convenience. whether or not these small things warrant a change back to custom roms depends on the users needs and wants.
for myself, im probably going to switch back to a 2.1 custom rom now that ive tasted the frozen goodness. its quite flavorful, but its missing the sprinkles (just my spoiledness). this may be the "ultimate" current rom for some which needs nothing else, but my palette yearns for an extra oomph. dont get me wrong, im not bagging google in any way, i just feel like ive grown heavily dependent on the extras the mods have been so gracious to add.
for the record, i love google and i love how theyve given devs such an awesome platform. cheers for everyone in this community who feels the same.
Just curious what "extras" have you grown heavily dependent on?
Everyone acts like they didn't know it wasn't gonna have those extra goodies. I for one can do without those few for imo the best stock rom ever

Cyanogen 2.1 vs stock froyo = froyo ftw
Cyanogen 2.2 vs stock froyo = cyanogen 2.2 ftw
Cyanogen will probably have a FroYo build out within the week
believe it or not, trackball wake has been pretty big. a small option, but something i use all the time. also, having the battery percentage on the notification bar, customizable led lights and rate, black desire notification (which i think can be morphed?), reboot from the shutdown menu, ability to hide pictures in contacts just to name some.

For trackball wake. Download screenmodwidget put it on launcher, set it to the middle setting and now trackball wakes. Not perfect but works....
As far as battery percentage download battery indicator ....
I for one like browser the most on my phone, so naturally I like froyo cause of the full flash and speed of the browser ....
I also think its noticeably faster than cyanogen 507 t2. Now with froyo and cyanogen we will be in heaven.
I love CM's features, but one of froyo's features alone -being able to change the language by swiping on the space bar- is more important to me than all of them put together.
I can't live without it now.

wow! i guess i shouldnt be so surprised at how fast everyones working on froyo. thanks paul! i suppose i can go without for a few days..
FroYo!
Im sticking with FroYo!
Trackball colors already work, sms pop up changes the colors of the stock mms app and gmail notification changes the colors of the stock gmail app although this one needs an update as its buggy. I would think sometime soon trackball alert will work from the market without requiring root, same for nexus torch now that the video camera can leave the led on.It really seems like theres no reason to root anymore with everything google is providing access too. Main reaon i rooted before was to use wifi tether but they even give us that now too so I will likely just use a de-odexed factory froyo that I can theme and leave everything else alone. I love the battery life and the lack of "quirks" that the stock roms provide. I always seem to have terrible battery life and missed calls/other flukes with the Nexus when I use other ROMS than the factory one.

Any application that has an LED modification setting will change the color of the trackball depending on what color you direct to do whatever. The trackball only lights up with the altered color when the screen is off.

Hmmm, I'd answer both to the opening question : I've been spoiled by the extra features found in custom roms (some of which are in froyo, like tethering), but I'll stick to Froyo and wait for Cyanogenmod 6 =)

CyanogenMod Questions.

Hi there,
I have been stumbling across some awesome CM10 themes and it's something I'd like to have although they are only for CM9 and CM10. I'm currently running rooted stock nexus 4, whats the benefits of having a rom like CM10 - does CM10 run 4.2.1? which is what im currently using?
Whats are the positives and negatives to switching?
If i switch, can I convert BACK to stock?
1. Use the search feature. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35521539
2. CM10 = Android 4.1.X....... does not support Android 4.2.X and does not support N4 (mako)
3. first link. no negatives. its like reformatting your computer. If you go to Windows 8 and don't like it, go back to Windows 7.. what are the negatives? none. just reinstall apps... use titanium backup to backup/restore apps (buy pro version)
4. Yes you can revert back to stock. Nothing is permanent on android.
......... next time, do some research before just straight up asking these questions as they are already answered.

a big positive with AOKP is the ability to add in and customize the on screen nav bar buttons. i came from a gs2. so setting this phone to have the same layout as my gs2 capacitive buttons is a real winner. you can also rearrange the order of and how many toggles there are in the quick settings drop down. there is a whole list of features that you get and the devving has only just begun.

CM10.1 (Jellybro) already has Navigation Bar changes. It's better off getting used to those three buttons IMO, menu is useless for me. I prefer having it as a touch button somewhere on the app. If not then I'll use the bottom right one.
You can arrange toggles on quick settings drop down as well on CM10.1.
CM10.1 is a ongoing project and is developing really fast without dirty hacks that AOKP does. Very clean code.

i got tired of trying to figure out how to get into settings. and even worse... nova settings. so used to it being the menu key that i had to get it back.
tried out cm. a week ago. it was behind aokp in features so i went back to aokp. couldnt speak for what it has so i gave examples of what i know.
clean code or not. aokp has always suited my needs better than cm. but thats just me.

Pull down notifications -> Tiles -> Settings. Guess I got accustomed to it on my Galaxy Nexus where there wasn't a tile button. It was just pull down notifications -> settings. It takes some time getting used to it, but it's pretty good imo. But that's the best part about android you can do it the way you like it, traditionally or the new way
I used to like AOKP but felt it was too bloated with unnecessary crap like AOKP Wallpapers (Swagpapers), unnecessary unicorn stuff etc. I prefer CM as its cleaner code and more optimal whereas AOKP does things in 'hackish' code and just like what the name implies, it's kanged from CM sources anyway.

lol. that damn pink unicorn is so old. the day it was released it got old, and every time someone tries to be cute by adding another wallpaper... i think to myself WHY!!!
one thing i loved about sticking cm on my nexus was that bad a$$ boot animation. once the first milestone get released i will definitely be checking cm out again. you are also 100% correct on the code thing. and i never thought of the meaning of kang. <--- good point.

haha yeah i was annoyed of keep having to remove AOKPClock, SwagPapers, Swag Toggle like wth... unnecessary line of code. i do love the amount of customization in there though. i used xylon on my galaxy nexus before i got my N4 (it started coming to rise at 4.2.X) its pretty customizable as well, very feature rich.
does AOKP have navigation height / width adjustments in the ROM already? i miss that feature, CM has everything I want as of right now. only missing nav height changes. can't wait for PGM for N4 though http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bZEodCnYv58#t=14s is a brief video of what it is. i love it because i dont have to use the buttons

Ah I don't need arrows, I actually prefer them to be normal size. AOKP probably has this feature already, CM has a feature in which if you are on a entry field (typing) you can use volume keys.. up and down to move left and right of your words if you choose to (can be disabled).
the phone does sleep, it's built into a kernel module and uses very minimal battery life. I've used it since I saw it on the GN apps forum. if you use light flow, it probably uses the same amount of battery (or less). lightflow barely interferes with the phone's battery life.
oh that's easy.. just go to any youtube video and right click the video and click "Copy current url at current time" I figured I would save you some time and get to the point

iPhone 4 Owner Switching To The Nexus 4 - Questions

Guys,
I've just received my Nexus 4 after deciding to give Android a try. I've always been a big fan of all the Nexus phones knowing that they're completely free of bloatware and offer a pure Android experience as it was meant to be experienced by Google.
Currently, I have a jailbroken iPhone 4 16GB but I wanted to try something different after my 24 month contract and decided it a no brainer to go for the Nexus 4 16GB especially at the price Google Play are offering it at. Also I was getting bored of iOS and fancied a change especially given that the screen size of iPhones are pretty small in comparison.
However, I just have a few questions on how to do a few simple things as below if anyone would be kind enough to answer.
1. How can I get a battery percentage like I had on the iPhone? Any recommendations that work well with the Nexus 4?
2. I just want a black ground for the wallpaper to maximise battery life. How can I do this?
3. Is there a way to add toggles to the notification bar to enable or disable Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Location, Airplane Mode, etc?

Root + a custom ROM can solve pretty much all of this (except for the background)
1.) Many custom ROM's/mods have battery percentage available as an option, so the easiest way for you to get the battery percentage is to install a custom ROM. CM10 does this perfectly. For steps on how to root + install a custom ROM, try using one of the toolkits available in the Nexus 4 Original Development section, or try to find some guides in the Nexus 4 General section or the Original Development section. I'd link you to them, but I'm on my phone right now, and its too cumbersome a task to go back and forth between the browser and the XDA app. You could pm me however, and when I'm on my computer I'd be glad to help.
EDIT: Another way you could get battery percentage is using an app from the play store -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.naeem.batterystatusnotification
It's not optimal, but it works.
2. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure a black background vs any other non-live background won't make a significant difference in terms of battery life. I think this is because the Nexus 4 has an IPS display. Super Amoled displays, however, are a huge culprit in terms of battery life and so a black screen is beneficial to only those with samoled screens.
3) Have you tried swiping down from the notification bar using two fingers? While those only act as shortcuts, they still do work. If you're not satisfied with this, get an app on the play store called "Elixir 2" and that should suit your needs
If you need anything else, feel free to shoot me a PM

1. I would also recommend you to root your phone and install a custom ROM, there you can change the statusbar with battery and clock and so on
3. As far as I remember you even have a widget on stock ROM for toggles. And if you want them in the notifcation bar you again should use a custom ROM. Some of some can change the quicksettings to real toggles.
I would recommend AOKP ROM but thats a matter of taste.
Power toggles https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.painless.pc will allow you to add some pretty looking toggle widgets to the notification bar. It also has the ability to add a the battery percentage to the status bar as a separate icon.
This is a good solution if you want to remain stock.

You need to try awesome ROMs like aokp, but READ A LOT BEFORE!!
as for the background, I'm pretty sure it doesn't make any difference, just set brightness to auto.
there's an app in the play store called 'notification toggles', which does a pretty good job at bringing toggles to the notification bar.
and i would also recommend installing a custom rom, especially CyanogenMod, because that's the closest to aosp (vanilla android) as you can get.
just search for 'mako' (the codename of the nexus 4) on get.cm, and you'll find detailed instructions on how to unlock/root your device, and install cm. i recommend using the monthly/milestone release, is quite stable and bug free.

Paul O'Brian's Modaco rom changes the factory shortcuts in the notification bar into quick toggles. You short press to toggle, or long press for the shortcut. He makes two versions of his rom. One is based on the stock rom, and the other is built on Cyanogenmod. If you subscribe to his site you can "bake" your own rom with the features you want.
Wow tanks for the quick responses guys! Wasn't expecting this many suggestions seriously. Definitely a knowledgeable community!!
Right, I've installed a widget called battery percentage which has solved my problem. It seems very accurate so far too.
In regards to the toggles, I'm very happy with the 2 finger slide down option and I've learnt something new about my phone.
Got the brightness set to manual but at the lowest setting as this is how I used to use my iPhone most times to maintain decent battery life.
I'll see if I can download a custom wallpaper app that will allow me to change it to completely black and I'm pretty much done.
As much as custom ROM's sound tempting, I think I'll leave them for now as I'm extremely happy with the way the system operates just now. Leaving it stock will allow Google updates to be installed easily too.

Black backgrounds or any backgrounds for that matter won't make a lick of difference on an IPS screen. The light is shone from behind the screen and doesn't change in intensity based on pixel variation. The AMOLED screen is an entirely different ball of wax, where lighter pixels would indeed draw more power because the light is generated by the pixels themselves instead of a backlight.
Sent from my Nexus 4
Power Toggles is a near enough essential app.. You wont regret it.. plus you can change the icon in power toggles to show your battery percentage in the notification bar.
As youre new to android youll probably find many apps that are useful and satisfy your needs, but then you might start to notice the limitations of stock, resulting in eventual rooting and finally installing custom roms etc.
I use AOKP in which you get the toggle page by one finger swiping. I also use CircleMod which is built in and gives you the opportunity to replace the stock battery icon with it.
I rooted a week after I got this phone, and after the weeks I installed my first custom ROM. This is my first Android phone btw.
Thus AOKP or CM 10.1 would be your choice.

I uninstalled Battery Percentage for Power Toggles. It pretty much ticks all the boxes for me.
As others have stated don't use a black background to save battery. That is for amoled. If you like the look go for it but don't do it for battery.
Here is the fun part. You can download a app like wallbase for all types of wallpapers. Or you can just get a picture from anywhere you like. Drag one from your computer to the phones storage. Download any image with the phone browser or app. Open the gallery and set it as your wallpaper by pressing the menu icon. Set as....
You're not gonna believe this guys, after letting the battery completely die then performing a full charge, the phone will no longer connect to my wireless network.
My iPhone & some other Windows phones work fine.
Tried a factory reset but no luck. Just can't believe it lol especially as it's a brand new handset!
Called Google up but they fobbed me off to LG support who keep telling me they'll call me back when they can.

Power Toggles is a near enough essential app.. You wont regret it.. plus you can change the icon in power toggles to show your battery percentage in the notification bar.

+1 for Power Toggles. It's the best option if you remain on stock that gives you battery percentage and toggles in the notification bar - all in a matching blue color.

LG tried some troubleshooting steps with no luck.
Google said they'll need to get me to send the device back and they'll replace it when they have more stock. So back to the drawing board for me.
If there is a very big wait time, I'll just get a refund and get another iPhone.

There goes this thread. Let the trolling commence.
In all seriousness, mentioning iOS aside from 'I left it for Android' is pure trollbait. Just for future reference.
Imagination is for turbo-nerds who can't handle how kick-butt reality is!
The wifi finally came back on me all of a sudden.
I then restarted the phone to verify if there is an issue with it or not and got the same problem.
Seems like the wifi is not activating when the phone comes on even though it's activated in the o/s.
if the 4 dont get u the 5 will

Quest for "Darkness"

Okay, maybe not as dramatic as the thread title suggests, but this is regarding the possibility of transforming the menu screens of our G2s to black.
I'm sure I'm not the only one out there, but I'm a big fan of black menus on my gadgets and computer systems. Howevevr, we have no such luck with the default LG UI on our G2s. As we all know, the default LG UI is predominantly white. Things like the settings menu, gallery, pop up notification windows, etc are all in white.
We have a bunch of talented modders here who have done some amazing work on navbars and status bars and icons, so I'd just like to know the possibilities of including a feature to turn all the system UI menus to black instead of white. I know that AOSP ROMs like CM already have that feature, but I'm not quite ready to switch over yet, without sacrificing some of the LG-exclusive features.
Just throwing out a request on behalf of the black menu lovers out there, and have an awesome weekend everyone!

C'mon dudes, Breaking Bad and musical tastes aside, it would be nice if we can have dark menus. I'm sure they would fit in nicely in a lot of custom themes we have going in our phones, more so than the boring white ones.

I'm Ll for the dark side. The inverted vibe looks much better. Checkout team blackout apps also.

And on topic: coming from the asylum I too want everything in black. Hadn't I lost the remote by doing so I had flashed cm with the black betterbean theme.
I'll dig in to the settings, contacts and phones apks and see how hard it'll be, and either put out a mod (for VZW deodexed users), or strictly for malladus.

Sweet. Malladus is pretty awesome so far, Blacked out would be even better, if for nothing else than the Settings and Phone/Contacts apps. I started digging around, it'll take me a bit. changed a bunch of styles in phone and contacts and all it got me was some nice looking black tabs. I didn't dig much further than that though tonight.

I'm sure it's going to be a pain in the a$$ just like it was for stock Droid X (GingerBlur). Even though in the end I did end up getting it all blacked out, I hated working on that thing for that exact reason. There's so many things to change, and in so many different places. Plus, back then I had a lot more motivation, and it helped that I had some collaboration with travp624, unkleduke, and kirbnite, but that was almost 3 years ago...lol
I hope you guys get it figured out; I wouldn't mind trying it out. I'd most likely just end up going back to CM10.2 since I like stock-like Android better than I do skinned Android, but that's just me. Once I got the Gnex, I just couldn't go back to skinned android

I would jump to Carbon right now, but i would have to be dragged kicking and screaming away from knock-off and the OIS camera. And the "put the phone to ear whilst ringing to answer" gesture.

Please tell me you have something other than a toggle in the quick settings for "screen off/lock". i like not having to look at the screen, and just knowing where the status bar is to double tap. Although, i could survive with a long press option for the Recents button though.

It's not a toggle, I would be annoyed by that too...lol
It requires running a third party launcher though. I myself run Nova launcher. You can create a task with Tasker, or if you don't want to pay for Tasker, or don't already own it, you can use "Screen Off and Lock" from the Play Store.
Once you set either Tasker or Screen Off and Lock, you can set the action as a gesture in the Launcher. I have mine setup with a double tap anywhere on the screen to "knock off"; It works really well.

Bad part is, that only works when you are on the launcher. I own Nova prime (or whatever the premium version is), and Tasker as well, but right now I'm completely hooked on Aviate. Eventually CM will port/create "double tap statusbar to turn screen off/lock". They already have knock on, which you would think would be the hardest one, ensuring that there is a listener when the screen is off and such.

Brightness issues on custom ROMs

Hey guys, the one thing I liked about the stock ROM was that I could make the screen really dark and really bright. It's much more limited on the AOSP ROMs I've tried. Is there any ROM that gives me more control over brightness?
its the way they designed android pie which is stupid af. also tested it on my friends android one device its the same as the custom roms on lavender.

yup but its a heavily skinned pie. just like any other oem os. most custom rom devs prefer closer stock android experience.

Yeah, but Xiaomi actually fixes the bull**** google does to Android, that's why it takes longer for us to get android updates.

But brightness levels have nothing to do with skinning, no? If Xiaomi could change it, so could any other dev maybe?
My other two gripes with MIUI are the stupid notification behaviour and lack of colored music notifications + album art as background (yes that's important!) ?.
is there a fix?

I feel the album art as background too, but i prefer to stay on MIUI for better stability overall, plus i got really used to the MIUI skin so i don't feel like changing.

But how about notification behavior? I totally hated that because I want all my unread notifs to always stay in the notif bar + lockscreen.
Also, what is the best place to suggest / discuss implementing changes to MIUI? The official forums seem either dead or I get generic replies and little views.

I believe you'd have to enter the closed beta program to do that, the inscription is not always open though, you'd have to check mi community for more info.
Thanks.
While we're talking - does anyone else have the issue where 4G doesn't reconnect after calls? Sometimes it does after a longer while, but it's much quicker to enable/disable airplane more to get it to reconnect. I actually remember having a similar issue while on the stock ROM too.
