S8 active camera app broken after update - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I have the tmobile s8 active and everything is great with the phone until I updated to the January patch. After the update, the camera app no longer works. It will open, black screen, and then crash. I have tried everything I can think of to fix it. Reset, clear cache, factory reset, reflash current patch firmware, and reflash the previous December patch when it was still working. It is just somehow completely broken. The camera hardware is functional because I can use a third party camera app and take pictures. I am already in the process of getting a warranty replacement with tmobile and I am really hoping that I will just get a new phone instead of a refurb. However, this ordeal has soured me on the phone. I really like the active, but I am now worried that it will just randomly stop working and be unfixable. Is there something else I could possibly do? Any thoughts on what could have happened?

I wish I could say the same...I'm just unlucky like that. I have found some people with the normal S8 that have had a similar issue which was not resolved. The only thing I can do now is wait for my replacement phone and hope it doesn't have the same problem.

Well, at least it's a warranty replacement

OTA updates if not on T-Mobile?

I'm using a T-Moblie MyTouch 4G on Wind Mobile in Canada. Would the phone get OTA updates? If not, is there any way to check or download the latest updates. Have there been any updates since the version on my phone:
Android: 2.2.1
Baseband: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel:
2.6.32.21-g899d047

Build: 1.17.531.2 CL277036 release-keys
Software number: 1.17.531.2
Browser: WebKit 3.1
The reason I ask is the phone behaves strangely at times. I've seen it show 3 or 4 bars but GPS, data and voice don't work until I reboot then all is fine. I've also seen it lose a strong signal and be unable to get it back until I reboot and suddenly everything is fine. I've also read so much about how fast this phone is supposed to be but mine seems to to frequently stutter when scrolling through the app list, movie playback in rockplayer (and others) is often jerky, and it even seems to have serious problems recording at 720p (it freezes for a while resulting in sections being missing from the recording) or playing back those videos. I'm hoping maybe there was a bug fix released.
Thanks!
stock Rom is pretty bloated and your going to run into those issues if your on stock. swap to a custom rom and root and you should be fine.
So none of that sounds out of the ordinary on the stock ROM?
I'm trying to get my phone replace with one of the ones with a good screen. I'm waiting to hear from the third HTC rep who's supposed to call today but it sounds like they are going to give me a replacement since they told me they're trying to collect samples of the poor screens (although based on the poll I saw in this forum, it's hard to imagine there's a shortage of samples for them to look at). I don't want to do any permanent rooting or flashing until I have a replacement just in case it causes issues with warranty.
Once I have a good replacement I'll probably go ahead and flash something better. Is there a stable Gingerbread ROM yet?
Thanks.

Thats strange. I'm completely stock and don't have the problems you're having. I think you just got an overall bad device. Hope you get a good replacement. What speeds are you getting?
As for the ota? I don't think you'll receive it due to T-Mobile being the one that pushes it. When an ota does come I'm pretty sure there'll be a manual way to update. Latest update is still 2.2.1 which is the one currently on your phone.
CyanogenMod 7 is still experimental but I hear all over that its pretty stable. Check some threads first.

I've had zero issues on stock and still haven't bothered to flash anything yet, despite being rooted, because the stock works so well for me. I also think you just got a generally bad device. Best of luck with your next one!

Ok, thanks guys. I'll see how my new phone works when I get a replacement. Hopefully it'll behave better...
I'm stock and I don't have those problems that you mentioned. Have you tried factory reset?
No, I haven't tried a factory reset yet. It's been a little better behaved lately. Also I'm most likely getting a replacement from HTC in the coming days(weeks?) so I'm not inclined to do any modding or starting again from a reset until I get the new phone. Whether it's a hardware or software issue, hopefully starting fresh on a new device will fix it...

Did you ever get your replacement? I got an escalation call the day after my initial call so I was feeling really good about HTC support. He told me I'd get a call from corporate. Still haven't heard anything. Finally called HTC support back, their notes were all messed up, and after several minutes on hold they told me Corporate will call me.... And now after that last post I want to install Cyanogen 7 but I don't want to do it before sending back my phone...
In any case, I put up a video shot at 720p to illustrate one of the things I was talking about. Actually, in low light video looks awful, but there was enough light to make this one look decent at times, but every so often it just pauses. This happen to anyone else? Is it a slow SD card write issue maybe? I'm using the card that came with the phone.

[Q] Nexus One reboot when using 3g

hello guys I have a nexus with one gingerbread 2.3.4 and when I use the 3G network after 2-3 minutes the phone restarts. with this bug I can not use Internet
any ideas? Thanks!
Yes. Me to.
What ROM and/or kernel combo you guys using?
I have the stock rom ota gingerbread 2.3.4, nothing changed, full stock. I recently tried miui 1.5.20 the problem is the same. may be a hardware problem?
Does the phone get hot to the touch on the back? Does the phone still reboot if you turn off 3g data and you go exclusivly Wifi?
Had the same issue with my old Nexus 1. Called HTC support and they immediately said it was a defective board. RMA'd and got refurb, but at least it does not reboot when I use 3g.
Good luck.
thanks jhsiao36, think if I update the radio version 5.12.00.08 can change something or brought it in for service?

I didn't help for me. I tried the 5.12.00.08 radio and it suffered from the same 3g reboots. But when I disabled 3g and used Wifi, never suffered from reboots.
If the phone is still under warranty, definitely encourage you to call them. HTC's customer and tech support is the best I've ever seen. They replaced it no questions asked, even though my phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked.

+1 They are awesome to deal with. It really makes me sad that they are starting to lock down their phones, because I won't buy a phone if I can't run custom ROMs on it.
But with the radio, I highly doubt flashing to 5.12 would help. Google released the 5.08 radio with the OTA update to Gingerbread. If 5.12 was any better, I'm sure they would've included it. There had to have been a reason they stuck with 5.08.
If you aren't afraid of losing anything, or already made backups, you could try the passimg method of giving you a completely stock install. See if the problem occurs with that as well. This would rule out software vs hardware.

I really don't think it can be resolve without sending it back to HTC for a replace/repair. As I said in my previous posts, I've tried 3 different ROMs - stock, cyanogenmod 6 and 7 - all exhibit the same issue - reboot when on 3g, but perfect if on Wifi. And yes, it will reboot even on a freshly install ROM (no apps installed).
HTC knows of this issue and they will replace/repair. I got a refurb and it works perfectly - stock, cyanogenmod 6 or 7.
Sorry, probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but search on <insert your favorite search engine> and you will find that this is a fairly widespread problem.
Thank you for your answer! It does not work, had sent a factory repair.
After several tests, on Monday I sent the phone in for service. I think it's a hardware problem, maybe a bad batch of motherboards.
my S / N: HT05... and your?
I will tell you just back from assistance.
Did you ever overheat it? I believe that the N1 has a problem if you really push it that it can overheat. Once it happens once it will happen again and every time it takes less and less to cause the reboot. Eventually it reboots just with 3G.
I was running mine in the car-mount with GPS, Google Maps (3G), screen on brightest, on a hot summer day while charging ... and it rebooted. Didn't think much of it but then it started rebooting every time I used GPS and charging.
In the end it was pretty near useless ... rebooting all the time. I sent it in twice (the first time they couldn't reproduce the problem) and the second time they replaced the board. Problem solved.
Now I am very careful not to overheat it.

Maybe an updated version of software by Google will fix the BLOD

Hello guys.
I live in South Korea and just had contact with customer service.
They said once my warranty is now passed, they might not be able to provide me a free repair, but google will soon release an update that is supposed to fix the BLOD(Boot Loop Of Death), so I'd better wait for it.
I don't know if it will work, but for me, and people having a phone which can't even get to recovery but only bootloader, who seem to have nothing to lose, this update will worth the wait.
Let's hope that's true and we can get our 6P back to life.
Didnt Google mentioned BLOD is a hardware issue earlier?

Yeah. There's a news that Google said it's hardware problem, but Huawei did say the upcoming update will fix it.
IDK which one is truth.. just hoping simply updating software will fix it.

If it's a software issue why does it happen with Marshmallow, Nougat and custom ROMs? I don't think Huawei is being honest.

Oh it didn't occured to me..
I also have some doubt that it's a software-related problem, because downgrading to MM doesn't even work.
Well, maybe they are fixing bugs that they haven't found before, or also maybe, the defective OS has triggered something..
I'm not sure that update will fix my phone, but for now, this is my last hope.

Good luck but I honestly wouldn't get my hopes up too high. But you aren't the first person Huawei told this to. Hopefully there is something to it besides them trying to brush people off. I personally think people should file a class action suit against Huawai since the phone appears to be defective and it should last for more than a year given its premium price. I've never had a phone from HTC, LG or Samsung break, no matter how long I kept using them. I've never even heard of another phone that has all the issues the 6P does.

Yeah I'm suspecting if there's an inherent hardware defects, and if that's the case, I think they should provide us a proper support like LG providing refund of Nexus 5x in US.
But, I'm not an expert and don't know what caused boot loop.
As I saw another person who may live in another country of mine, heard from Huawei that update will fix the problem, there may be something google is preparing for.
For now, there best thing I can do, is wait android 7.1.2 beta image.
If it won't work, that's a problem of then.
p.s. luckily I have unlocked bootloader, but considering boot looping devices can update their software only through unlocked bootloader, what should normal people having locked bootloader should do?

Maybe you're right.
I'm not sure if the update will fix my phone, and whether they meant 7.1.2 beta or officially update.
I also have a bad feeling that my phone won't back, but if this phone doesn't return, I have no choice but keep using my old-fashioned Nexus 5.
If the beta update doesn't fix it, maybe I'll just give up or give it a second chance for official update.. but for now, I can see some hope because Huawei said it to me.
There's some news about what I tried, but there ain't good things.
First, I downloaded N4F26O update(https://developers.google.com/android/images), which was uploaded in 2 days ago(Yeah, I only thought about 7.1.2 beta, abd didn't think about this) and installed it.
It didn't work.
So I contacted with Huawei and Google's consumer care center.
Huawei said, to talk about softwares, I should contact with Google.
Google said, they didn't receive any plan of the update which is supposed to fix boot loop. I got confused, since a days ago, Huawei once did say there will be that update.
They also said, if I have a secondary phone, I'd better use that phone and see if the update will be released and fix my phone.
So... I didn't gain anything. Google and Huawei both said they can't assure the update will fix the bootloop, and the only clear solution is to change its motherboard.
Well, I won't give up, at least unti thel 7.1.2 beta's release, but I'm tired and for now, have nothing to do.
I'll just wait for the 7.1.2 beta.
I'll just keep waiting...

But that's seems to be for devices that's stuck in EDL mode.
I still can access bootloader, so thank you for your advice, but that seems to not work.
I'm afraid that you'll have to let this go.. Huawei is know for telling customers BS on the phone. Even the warranty repair center sucks. They downgrade people their phones and say that the battery issue is now resolved. It really is a shame, but they don't give a rat's *ss about you or any other customer who has already paid for the product.

Yeah, my phone became unusable. I had to restart to get data/voice working. This would happen randomly multiple times a day.
I had to send the phone back to Samsung for repair and all they did was send it back with the old software.

Yes, it solved the issue. I'm holding off on updates unless someone can confirm that the QL9 update fixes this issue.
The phone did not pass initial QC and Samsung replaced some internal parts as shown in the attached pic (the main board assembly I assume). I had the phone back in a week with software QI5.

terrible connection quality

So I've had this for a few days now and I've noticed it's dropped connection quite a few times, and when, IF it reconnects without rebooting, it usually gets stuck on H+.
I'm currently on OOS 10.3.0. Tried a custom ROM, same issue. Tried regarding to 9.0.11, same issue. Bought a new SIM card, same issue. I'm thinking I have to get back to the T-Mobile 9.0.16 and send this back. I'm getting sick of this. Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?
Sorry you are having so much trouble. This won't help, but my 6T global model (not T-mo) is the best reception phone I've ever had, at least on the ATT network.
It's hard to tell whether your problem is hardware based, something to do with the T-mo to global OS transition, or something else.
I have had it a full year and have no plans to swap it any time soon. I'm stock, unrooted (first time ever), and still on Pie for now, having deferred the update until it settles in a bit.
Good luck whatever you decide to do!

I'm having second thoughts about this phone. Two SIM cards and several calls to my cell provider and still no fix in sight.
I'm gonna see if the Swappa seller will send me a replacement.
Sounds like a problem with the hardware and pursuing a replacement is the right move. I had similar issue with a Samsung phone years ago.

I thought that as well when I read the first post. However, I would try one more thing.
I would break out the MSM Tool, and completely flash back to 100% stock. Then I would test it again. The issue he is describing could actually be due to a mismatch in firmware partitions. Possibly that is, I dont know that for a fact. I would give it a try. That tool has fixed countless errors that I "may or may not have" induced by poking around.

I did exactly that, back to T-Mobile firmware, and the issue still existed. So I returned the device.
